Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant @ Carlton Hotel

This was a recent meal with my in-laws. MIL's Cantonese and we like to go around some good Cantonese restaurants to experience some good stuff so that it will trigger the memories of dishes she grew up eating, or experience new ways of how traditional dishes are done by the expert Cantonese Shifu.

We were going to order à la carte but caught a glimpse of the set Special Seafood Set Menu that's $188 for 4 persons that was on the transparent stand on the table. It had almost everything we wanted to order from the menu, so we thought we shall try it out, it turns out more value for money too.

Appetizer

The appetizer was mushrooms, cucumber, jelly fish and fish maw. It had a nice marinate and our folks really liked it, in fact they finished it. (Ya, just as the wife and I were busy instagramming!)

Classic Daily Boiled Soup (Set Menu)

The soup of the day was Papaya and Pork Soup. It was a very delicious soup that was probably boiled for a long time. The soup had the sweetness of the papaya and you can see the viscosity of the soup from the photo above. It got the approval from the MIL. MIL always prepares soup when we go to her place for dinner.

Roast Pork

You can guess who requested for it...
The skin on top is just c-r-i-s-p-y! Oh, so y-u-m-m-y!

A closer look of the layers of fat and lean meat of the pork belly.
I am sure you can imagine the taste. Goes so well with the horseradish dip.

Deep Fried Century Eggs

MIL loves century eggs and we thought we would just order this to nibble.

All of us loved it! I usually only eat them in porridge, but this proved to be exceptional.

Crispy outside, it has the usual jelly like part of the egg white. The egg yolk part was all custard like! It has a dribble of shrimp paste sauce over it.

Pan-fried Live Prawns with Soya Sauce (Set Menu)

The beautiful captivating aroma hit us even before we ate it.

A simple dish,  executed with fresh ingredients made it so enjoyable. Prawns are always a finger licking experience. Who doesn't lick the sauce off their fingers? A nice portion too, each of us get to eat 2 relatively big prawns.

Pardon the pun, but we ate it and we were rather 'haa'-py!

Stewed Garoupa with Beancurd Skin & Garlic (Set Menu)

Another dish that sizzles and the aroma engulf our senses before eating. FIL is a fish person and he loves all kinds of fish and stewed fish dishes are one of the favourites.

Nicely executed. Fish was fresh, sizeable portions too, sauces good, really fragrant and I just love the whole garlic pieces in it! A good portion for 4 too.

Smoked Chicken (Set Menu)

We did not expect much when we saw this on the set menu, but it came out quite good.

Smoked Chicken, but it's like soya sauce chicken that's really addictive. You will want to pop another piece into your mouth right after having one. This was a cold dish.

Poached Chinese Spinach with Ling Zhi Mushrooms in Rich Broth (Set Menu)

The problem with this vegetable is that it is sometimes bitter.
We must have been in heaven's favour, none of the strand of spinach had any hint of bitterness!

Not too salty too that you can drink up the broth. FIL did finish it all up. Haha....

Braised Ee Fu Noodles with Chives (Set Menu)

Reminds us of wedding dinners in many ways. It always served right at the end, and we knew it was almost the end of our meal. Of course, this dish is a wedding dinner favourite.

Can't find any fault with it. Nice, warm, flavourful, enough mushrooms, not too chivy, not too wet, not too dry.

Chilled Sea Coconut, Preserved Apricot and Sweet Basil Seed (Set Menu)

It was a rather interesting dessert. What you see on the spoon is dried apricot that has been hydrated, it taste exactly like dried apricot that we always love chewing. It has the 'tadpoles' covering it too. Beautiful ya?

The set meal was quite good value for money, good sized portions too. The service staff knows it and said it was not a good idea to order any more sides. She was right, but we were still glad we ordered the Century Egg and Roast Pork. Luckily we did not order another of the side dishes after she wanted to stop us. We love service staff that are truthful and honest.

Standing Sushi Bar @ 8QSAM

Group deals seems like a huge success now! You keep seeing the deals coming in from the various websites. Three companies that currently offer things I like are http://hungrydeals.sg/, http://www.groupon.sg/ and http://superdeals.insing.com/. They somehow tempt you that you just want to click on the deals.

One of my very first deal was the one by  http://hungrydeals.sg/
It was a 50% off Japanese Hoppy + Salmon Nigiri Set at Standing Sushi Bar at only $10 (worth $20).

* Salmon Nigiri *

Standing Sushi Bar @ 8QSAM

The Salmon Nigiri was delicious as expected. I always like the sashimi from Standing Sushi Bar. They have always been fresh and so far not disappointed me. We bought two sets of the deal, so we had 8 pieces of salmon in total.

* Hoppy *

Hoppy Beer

The Hoppy! When we bought the deal, I had no idea what Hoppy was!

Hoppy Beer

I realised what it was after talking to a member of staff. Hoppy is actually a non alcoholic beer flavoured drink (0.8 percent alcohol is considered non alcoholic)!

It is usually mixed with shochu to up the alcohol content.
Somehow the mix goes well with me! (we looked at the menu and this drink usually costs $12, so our $10 was so worth it!)

Momo was hooked on it! I don't usually like alcoholic drinks did find it quite nice!

* Sushi Take *

Standing Sushi Bar @ 8QSAM

Since we were there, we felt like eating more. We ordered the Sushi Take. $25
It came with  7 assorted nigiri, 2 pieces of maki, miso soup and the salad shown below.

* Aji Shio *

Standing Sushi Bar @ 8QSAM

Feeling a bit more gluttony that usual, we asked them for some recommendation. We were told the Aji Shio ($28) has been popular with people who love fish. Oh yes, they were right.

Surprisingly the 'gut' part of the fish did not taste fishy. I like fish so I ate up every trace of fish flesh on it. The lady who took away the plate commented that the fish was so 'cleaned up'! I cleaned up even the head part. :-)

* Jo Kabubi *

Standing Sushi Bar @ 8QSAM

We decided to try out other stuff here. The only non fish we had.
The grill wagyu beef was nice and tender. Yes, it's delicious wagyu! ($35)

The meal might be a bit pricey, but it was because we ordered stuff that we liked. We probably over ordered because we were so full after that.

It also did not hurt when we asked which credit card had discounts.
We paid using "SCB" (I realise I have to use acronyms nowadays so that people won't think it is sponsored by them, you know which card right?) and got 15% off! Total bill was $84.85

Food For Thought @ 8 Queens Street

It was a surprised birthday dinner for Momo. A group of friends wanted to treat Momo dinner.
In these days of instant communication, this was planned over MSN and whatsapp! in a few days only haha..

She was told it was just a dinner with 4 friends. But in fact around 10 people were coming.

The things we do to give people surprises: A long table for 10 had been booked at Food For Thought @ 8Q. As this place has glass all over, Momo could see who's inside even before going to the bistro. To make it more 'real', the 4 friends were to sit at a single table first. So when Momo and I went in, she only saw 2 other friends. We then asked her to place order for her food.

Two minutes later, the rest all walked out from the back of the bistro. They sang Happy Birthday out loud and brought out this Pistachio Cherry cake from Rive Gauche.

Oh, she was surprised for sure. With the loud singing, her faced turned red!

This cake was bought from Rive Gauche. It was a great choice!

If you watch the Channel 8, 9PM show last night you would have seen this place on TV! I saw this verse on TV and recognised it was this place. A tweet from @FFThought confirmed it and showed this link where they filmed the show 4 months ago.

Ecclesiastes 3:23

*** Chinese Chicken Salad ***

Momo and I and the people beside us shared this. If you like the Japanese tamago, where the yolk is soft and white slightly firm, you will like this! The salads are fresh and the ikan bilis gave it a crunch. The dressing is soy based with soya and ginger. But we did not quite like the chicken. It was a bit dry.

Chinese Chicken Caesar

*** Hoisin Har Cheong Baby Back Ribs ***

This was my main course. You all know I love ribs, so I will be biased. The ribs are soft and really fragrant. You can see the slight char on it that gave it a nice caramelized taste. Let me warn you, it's salty!

The potato gratin behind was kinda nice. Those orange looking thing on the salad were tomatoes. It was warm! It was roasted. Nice touch.

*** Crispy Curry Chicken & Spicy Chilli Fries ***

Momo had this. When we ordered curry, we were not expecting this to come out!
But if you are a fan of fried crispy chicken, it's your kind of food! If you are expecting the traditional chicken curry, you are in for a surprise.

This particular plate Momo had was crispy outside and inside it was still a little moist. Momo liked her chilli fries. Thick cut potato pieces.

For the rest of the food, we did not really taste it. Some of them are 'new friends' to me. Also, the table is a bit long with so many of us. It's 'pai seh' to taste their food. I just took photos. You can use for reference to their menu online which has only text. ;-)

This was the Sage Roasted Pumpkin Risotto.

Two friends had the Broccoli and Bacon Risotto.

The Chunky Sausage & Tomato Linguine.
I love sausages and I think I might try this the next time!

The Garlic Prawns and Coriander Linguine.

The Creamy Beef Striploin Linguine.
Compared to the the rest this looks messy. lol...

The Grilled Vegetable Linguine makes me wanna eat it though.
I think it's because I like eggplant! ;-)

Happy Birthday Momo!
Hope you liked the surprise.
