Din Tai Fung @ Suntec City

It was another of the family lunch outings. When it's a group of 7 people, expect lots of dilly-dally-ing. We went to the Suntec City branch of Din Tai Fung because it's one of their newest branch and also, Singaporeans have not discovered that Suntec City has re-opened.

We got our table of 7 within 10 minutes. So the 10 minutes while waiting for the rest to arrive and some to the washroom, and many other things, my cousin and I ordered our food.

Din Tai Fung

Oriental Salad in Special Vinegar Dressing. One of our favourite appetisers here. My cousin can eat a whole thing by herself, so it's 2 portions of this.

Din Tai Fung

The wife's favourite Drunken Steamed Chicken.

Din Tai Fung

Pickled Cucumber with Spicy Sauce. One of the wife and my favourites. Crunchy and savoury and addictive.

Din Tai Fung

Another of our favourite appetizers, the rolled pork with cucumber in the centre with crushed garlic sauce. This goes with Mango Beer.

Din Tai Fung

I got a voucher to try this and so the best time is to try it with many people with different dishes.
How clever of them to pair Taiwanese Beer with Taiwanese food!

To take it a step further, they even have a 'paper wheel' brochure that lists out the beer that goes well with their different dishes.

The men liked the Gold Medal Taiwan Beer, the ladies liked the Lychee Fruit Beer and White Grape Fruit Beer.

Din Tai Fung

We like nibbling bits of everything, so we had the Mince Black Bean Meat Noodles and also the Spicy Sauce Noodles.

Din Tai Fung

Din Tai Fung's fried rice is one of the yummiest around. So proud of my cousin. She's helping to order and she noticed that we have had prawns so we are not having the prawns fried rice. She also ordered very 2 different noodles above. More choices for us.

Din Tai Fung

Another item that many people love at Din Tai Fung. The Deep-fried Marinated Pork Chop. We have eaten this same thing in different DTF and this one here is really nice. Some branches cook it a bit too dry, the ones here is juicy! Not sure if they send the best chefs here to open up or it's permanent.

The 'brochure' says this goes with the Lychee Fruit Beer.

Din Tai Fung

This is the Taiwan Shrimp and Pork Oriental Wantons with Spicy Sauce.
We did a mental calculation that we will exceed the $90 ($80 for Citi cards) so we will get this free.

Even if we did not, we will order it because the various dishes with spicy sauce here tastes good. We need to know the recipe!

Din Tai Fung

This is the usual Oriental Wantons with Black Vinegar and Chilli Oil that we usually order. Still our favourite. Almost the same as the previous one but this has a sweet vinegar taste.

Din Tai Fung

It's good that we have a group of us, we can order more Xiao Long Bao varieties to try. The Steamed Angled Gourd and Shrimp Dumplings. A very acquired taste. Taste a bit too 'green'.

Din Tai Fung

We thought we shall indulge in some Crabs and Pork Dumplings. We are secretly glad it's not the chilli crab dumpling they had previously. This is lighter and doesn't have the chilli taste to mask it. It gives it a natural sweeter taste to the usual pork dumplings.

Din Tai Fung

The Chicken Dumplings. The wife doesn't like this at all. It's all right, but not what we are usually used to. An alternative to those who don't like pork.

Taiwanese Beer

They are having a special promo now as shown on the poster above.

We had quite an enjoyable lunch here. This branch is quite big and we like the spaciousness and higher ceiling. It is where the meeting rooms used to be that's no longer there. The food items here were also nicely prepared compared to some branches that's a bit 'different'.

Din Tai Fung @ Junction 8, Bishan

One of those nights, date night and run errands night. The 2 should not mix, but we are all in a hurry. We both know we have to get stuff, pay bills, change foreign currency (Euro and Pounds) and we were very hungry.

Thanks to the Circle Line, (both our work places are both on different parts of the Circle Line) so we said, let's go to a mall on that line! Somehow we decided on Junction 8. We got off the train and thought of a place that has a relative short queue to eat.

Some how, it ended up at Din Tai Fung, because it's quick and we like their food. Not the usual branch we visit, since it's far from home, but food was good, but they did forget to key in one of our dishes though. Food was relatively good and served rather quickly too.

Din Tai Fung @ Junction 8, Bishan

The wife's favourite soup at Din Tai Fung. The Braised Beef Soup without noodles. Yes, the non-carbo soup. The beef chunks are always looking perfectly whole, yet when you bite it, it's so tender and it's as if it can dissolve in your mouth.

The Taiwanese style of Beef Soup, fragrant and a hints of spices.

Din Tai Fung @ Junction 8, Bishan

A little carbo in the form of delicious prawns wontons. I ordered it because of the spicy vinegarish sauce that comes with it. Something both of us like very much.

Din Tai Fung @ Junction 8, Bishan

A relatively 'safe' side dish of pickled vegetables. The 'kiam chai' has been soaked and not salty anymore but still has the nice crunch to it.

Din Tai Fung @ Junction 8, Bishan

Our order that was forgotten to be keyed in and did not arrived till the end of our meal when we asked. The lady who took our orders remembered us ordering it but realised it was not entered into the order system. She was very apologetic and we said it's ok.

We always order this when we are at Din Tai Fung in any country! There's a little bit of difference we noticed. The one that has the 'Michelin' Star in HK does taste better!

Din Tai Fung @ Junction 8, Bishan

We thought we would not eat Xiao Long Bao that night, but we still ordered it. Why? We have no idea, we always say we shall eat other things before we walk into the restaurant, but always still end up ordering it!

A quick Chinese Food date night meal. After a quick meal, we rushed to change money for we were going to Europe and that was the only night left that we are free before we flew off!

Eat at Taipei @ JCube

A colleague told us about this new Taiwanese eatery when we asked what was nice in JCube. After being tempted by her descriptions, we thought why not go immediately to try it? So off we went in a colleague's MPV to JCube.

For those who is wondering where is JCube, it's the previous Jurong Entertainment Centre that has been demolished and rebuilt. When you get to JCube, Eat at Taipei is located beside the ice skating rink on level 3.

EatAtTaipei
Though the place looks packed, we did not have to wait long to be seated.
We were seated just next to the rink so we got to see people skating while we ate.

When we got seated, we were presented the menu, but were were told quite a few things on the menu is not available yet. It will be available soon. It's a pity we could not try more stuff. It's always more interesting to go out in bigger groups and order more stuff to share (and also split the bill).

Eat at Taipei
One colleague ordered the Oyster Mee Suah. This guy loves oysters and when he saw the above, he was a bit sad. He saw 2 oysters floating above and told us straight away he needs a second lunch. When he put his chopsticks in, he suddenly smiled, he said there were 6 mid size oysters hidden inside! He still wished there were more mee suah though.

I did not take photos of the other dishes that the rest of us ate. Everyone's hungry and I did not want deprive even 5 seconds of their time to fill themselves up. Some of us had the braised pork belly noodles, braised pork rice etc.

Eat at Taipei
This was my Spicy Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodles. ($9.90)

It's not really spicy, probably a light hint only. The beef were not spectacular, but it was still quite nice. It had been braised till it was soft. The daikon too was well braised. The soup does not look thick, but it was flavourful though. It's also not salty, so I could finish all the soup!

Another colleague who had the same too, enjoyed it too and also finished it happily.

Eat at Taipei
This next dish has a very inauspicious name. It's called the Tainan 'Coffin' Toast. ($8.90)
It's a very thick slice of bread that has been fried, the top cut along three sides, part of the bread digged out and filled with seafood in white creamy sauce.

I like the bread but not really what was inside. It's because I personally don't like my bread soggy. But the rest seemed to like it. They love bread soaked with the creamy sauce. The seafood inside were prawns, sotong and fish slices.

Be warned, it can be quite messy!

Eat at Taipei
This was the Spring Onion Oyster Pancake.

I did not really like it. If you are those who prefer the taiwanese style of 'or chien' with the gooey kind of texture, you will like this. Our colleague who likes the oysters liked it. :-)

We would probably go back again when we could try more things in the menu.

Din Tai Fung @ Baits, Resorts World Sentosa

KopiKosongGirl and I have many things in common and yet we have equally different way of doing things. She is a planner. Every activity for the week or maybe till next month has been planned. I am more of an impromptu person. Sometimes, I think I drive her nuts.

After so many months, I guess she might have gotten used to me and does things out of the ordinary. Just the other Saturday, we woke up and then decided to just go into Sentosa. We boarded the monorail in and decided to stop at Resorts World Sentosa.

Our annual pass for Universal Studio expired and we did not renew it, so this time we did not go in. We walked around and decided we would have breakfast to eat. We found Toastbox and had a set breakfast. Feeling satisfied, we walked around some more and at 11am, we happened to walked past Din Tai Fung.

Images of Xiao Long Bao floated and we saw it was empty. It's rare that Din Tai Fung has no queue so we went in! We noted, 5 minutes after 11am is a good time to have lunch here. No queue, no crowd, it's like having the whole place to ourselves! It's so peaceful!

Din Tai Fung @ Baits
Taiwan Shrimp and Pork Oriental Wantons with Spicy Sauce.

We saw that it was a new item and we thought we would order it. Shrimp and pork combi had a nice bite, slightly 'qq' and there were quite a few of it too. Probably 8-10 of it. The Spicy Sauce is more like the chilli oil but it was sweeter.

Din Tai Fung @ Baits
Crunchy Mini Cucumber in Spicy Sauce

You all must be thinking we are mad having all Spicy. Though both were spicy, this cucumber dish's spicy sauce has more vinegar in it. KopiKosongGirl prefers this version of spicy sauce. I prefer the other sweeter version of it.

Din Tai Fung @ Baits
Xiao Long Baos

The normal XiaoLongBaos. So many places are serving these and we still like them because their skin here is thin and very soupy.

We left before the crowds came. We took the monorail out and went home.

Lu Gang Xiao Zhen (Asian Kitchen) @ ION Orchard

We were at ION Orchard and were hunting for food. Do you notice, sometimes it's the nose that leads you to what you want to eat! We were going down the escalator and the smell from someone's hot grill order from Watami hit us! So we walked towards Watami. But we were at Sushi Tei the day before and also had Japanese food the day before that!

So we walked past Watami and we saw the word Guitar Duck at the next shop! Huh? Guitar? We took a second look and decided to try it. It's a Taiwanese food shop called "Lu Gang Xiao Zhen". (another of the Asian Kitchen outfits) It sells the various Taiwanese street foods, but with a comfortable sitting area. We noticed that food was served rather quickly too!

***

We grew up eating Mee Suah, so we love anything Mee Suah!
(The Mee Suah we grew up eating did not have the oyster in it!)

Their Taiwan Granny Oyster Mee Suah ($8.90) is a little salty but that's how Mee Suah is suppose to be.
At home we have our Mee Suah uncut ie super long to symbolize longevity, but their Mee Suah is 'short'. Hmm.. probably for easy eating? Sis said the Mee Suah here is ok lah.

Taiwan Granny Oyster Meesua 8.90

***
The following is the Tang Hoon Paradize ($7.70)
Also a little salty, but it was nice too. Lots of ingredients in it.
Perfect for those who likes their food a little salty (like Momo!)

Tang Hoon Paradize 7.70

***

This was the Duck-in-a-Roll. ($6.90)
Sis and Momo seem to love it. I think it's ok lah. So, I think this is more of a ladies' dish.

Duck-in-a-roll 6.90

***

Presenting the Guitar Duck! Hey, it does not resemble a guitar at all. We had the small version and the original flavour. ($10.70)

The side that had no bones was really easy to eat. The side that had bones, you need to tackle it a bit.

Guitar Duck (Small) 10.70

***

I had the Eggy Bowl of Rice. ($5.90) It was served in a tiny bamboo container. Very pretty looking but if only the size of it was larger.

Eggy Bowl of Rice 5.90

If you were like me wondering where is the egg? It's hidden below!

Eggy Bowl of Rice 5.90

***

Just like any other Taiwan eating places in Singapore, the portions are a little petite.
So we ordered a few more things to try.

We have heard of Chou Tofu (smelly beancurd). But it was the first time we saw Xiang Tofu (fragrant beancurd). So out of curiosity, we ordered it.

It's just crispy skin, soft inside beancurd with some dipping sauce on the side. Not spectacular, but since it's easy to pop in the mouth, you would keep eating it.

Xiang Tofu

***

For desserts, we ordered two things to share.
The Mango Sago. The mango is a bit too ripe for my liking.

Mango Sago

***

I can't remember the name of the next dessert. But it's glutinous rice with lotus paste wrapped in lotus leaf.
While most of the food came very very quickly, this took a really long time to be served. It was steaming hot, so it was probably only prepared when we ordered it.

Glutinous Rice with Lotus Paste in Lotus Leave

Yes, it's petite too! But it was nice tasting though.
The ladies loves it. So I shall say it's another ladies dessert. :-p

Liu San @ Bukit Timah Plaza

It has been a few months since we ate here. We are back again and we are pleasantly surprised that they got proper menu now. It used to be an order chit with words and price.

My sis and her colleagues were eating there and I gatecrashed.

***

One of sis' colleagues will be going home for dinner, so she just ordered a little starter to fill her tummy first. I can't remember the name, but I think it was Mi Tong Kueh or something like that. I was too shy to ask what it is inside (hey, remember I gatecrashed), only asked if I can take a photo of her food. LOL

Mi Tong Kueh

***

I had the Braised Minced Pork Rice. A very simple dish, but I like it.
Minced Pork with rice makes me happy.

I was going to try the Taiwan Curry Rice, but it was sold out. Sigh... Next time.

Mince Meat Rice

***

Another of sis' colleague had the Oyster Mee Suah. She said she has been here 10 times and this is the first time she got to eat it. "Finally!",  she announced to the lady taking the orders. It was the last bowl for the day too! She was seen enjoying her mee suah.

***

Sis wanted to order something else and it was sold out, so she had the Mince Pork Noodles instead. It's almost similar to what I had. She had the noodles version of it. ;-)

Mince Meat Noodles

The noodles are a little spicy compared to my rice version. She enjoyed it.
She was too hungry and was digging in right after I took the first photo. Looks good eh?

Mince Meat Noodles

***

We all shared this "power" (I think, can't remember the name) chicken.  Meat from a drumstick cut into small pieces and deep fried. A bit like KFC's pop corn. I think KFC's version is nicer though. ;-p

Power Chicken

It was a quick dinner. Sis and her colleagues are teachers. After dinner, they went to sit at a coffee place and do the usual marking, marking and more marking!

Xin Wang Taiwan Cafe @ Raffles Link

Remember that I bought this Xin Wang "Peng You" card on time ago? It was way back in September! On the day I got it, I used the 15% off and whatever offer I was entitled to on the day of purchase.

But I still had a 1 for 1 main meal and a $10 voucher. I got to use the vouchers before it expires! So, Momo and I went to a Xin Wang near her workplace. There's a Xin Wang at Raffles Link. (at the underground mall, where it used to be Shoduko)

We were thinking of using the 1 for 1 main meal voucher. So the typical kiasu syndrome crept in. We wanted to maximise the value, so we ordered the more expensive mains. The two rice dishes at $7.80 was the dearer ones. (The mains it seems are not very expensive here)

Momo had the Chai Por Pork Rice. Below the pork is a sunny side up. It's the runny yolk kind! Oh yummy! Momo said it's not too bad, just a little too oily was her complaint.

Chai Por Pork with Rice

I had the Yakiniku Beef with Rice. It also had a sunny side up below it. Oh yes, the runny yolk mixed with the beef is nice. The beef was tender and not overcooked. It has onions that I like.

Both of us find it quite filling. I think it's because we don't usually eat a lot of rice.

Yakiniku Beef with Egg and Rice

I tried their homemade barley with black pearls previously and like it, so I ordered it again. Momo had the same thing.

Homemade Barley with Pearls

Guess what? When we wanted to use the voucher, we were told the 1 for 1 voucher is only valid from Sundays to Thursdays. It was Friday. "Alamak!".

We were told we could use the $10 voucher though. The total meal was $23 incl of service charge and GST. With the voucher, it was only $13. Not too bad right? For a cheapo meal out. LOL. Now I still got the 1 for 1 voucher. Hmmm...

Prince Taiwan Porridge @ Cheong Chin Nam Road

Last Wednesday nite, we attended a concert that our cousin was performing in. Had to rush there after work. Met sis and off we went and met uncle and aunt. After the concert, we headed to Cheong Chin Nam Road to have supper.

It's late and we seldom have supper, so we opted for porridge. We ate at the Taiwanese Porridge shop, just beside Killeney.

You can have rice or porridge with sweet potato. We all had porridge.

The Mei Cai Kou Rou that we had.

Sze Chuan Vegetables with Pork. I like szechuan vegetable anything! haha..

The Chai Por Egg. I like Chai Por with anything too!

The Inoki Mushroom, Shitake Mushroom and Pork.

The Fried Beef.

This is a place to add to the list of where to get late nite makan. It seems that the Cantonese Porridge shop a few doors away is very packed. But Aunt who lives in the area said, prefer hot food rather than cantonese style where the food is cold only the porridge is hot. :-)
