Authentic Korean Cuisine @ NUS Business/School of Computing Canteen.

Those working in NUS/NUH/Science Parks will be happy with this new discovery. A new Korean food stall has replaced the chicken rice stall at the NUS Business / School of Computing Canteen.

The name of the stall is simply "Authentic Korean Cuisine". It opened this week and many people have been trying it and giving it a thumbs up. It seems they are only offering part of the menu now as they sort out opening headaches.

One thing we noticed is that they are Korean ladies and teenagers manning the stall. You know in many so called 'korean' stalls, when you order beef bulgogi, the person will shout 'niu rou' or when you order daeji bulgogi they will shout to the kitchen 'zhu rou'. Well here, they read out the orders in Korean to the Korean 'aunties' in the kitchen. They also mumble some Korean that we don't understand. Colleagues and I think it's quite authentic (for now!)

Another thing we like about this new stall is their prices.

Over the last few days, colleagues and I have been eating from this stall. This Bibim bap was quite nice and it only costs $3.50. There are some meat hidden below the egg by the way. You scoop your own spicy sauce over it from the table.

I think a colleague is now addicted to this as she has taken the same in 3 straight days! LOL

Bibim Bap

It came with a bowl of soup (which we notice varies by the day) and some kimchi and peanuts/anchovies.

This was the Daeji Bulgogi (Spicy Marinated Pork) that one colleague tried. (I also tried it another day). They were quite generous with the meat. The pork had been well marinated and it was spicy. It also has lots of onions (my favourite) but some of you who hate onions, too bad lah...

You actually finish your rice before the meat. This only costs $4 with a stainless steel bowl of rice and the kimchi and peanut/anchovies side dish.

Another colleague tried their Beef Bulgogi. A few of us tried the beef and we liked it. But the colleague who ate this was the fussy eater. He said the meat is too marinated so the flavour is too strong for him.

So, if you like your beef and you like well marinated meat, maybe this is for you. If you like light tasting food, we would suggest you try the yong tau foo stall next door. :-p

The beef bulgogi costs $4.50 with rice and side dishes.

Another colleague tried the Ginseng Chicken Soup. (on another day) The chicken piece was quite big. The flavour according to my colleague is nicer than Kim's Family Food (For Kim's you need to add your own salt, but the ones here salt is already added).

The chicken had glutinous rice stuffed in the cavity of the chicken. It looks quite a filling meal. It costs only $4.50 with a bowl of rice and the side dishes.

So far, we think this place is good. We just hope it's not the opening bonus that we are getting what we see now. We hope their quantity and quality stays. It seems most things are under $5 here, probably the most affordable Korean cuisines around from a real korean kitchen.

I think Science Park folks will be taking the free shuttle buses into NUS now. It's still the university break, so there are lots of seating places. We see NUS staff and students forming a snaking queue now.

Lunch @ NUS BIZ Canteen

Colleagues and I were at the NUS Business Canteen for lunch. We think this canteen might be the least crowded. Everyone seems to be flocking to other canteens.

We were glad we came here. We do not need to look for seats. There's lots of it everywhere!

One colleague had this unique cold dish with buns from the Beijing Food stall.
Cold salad with pig's ears! She said it was nice.

BIZ Chinese Stall Food

She had it with the vegetable pan cake.  The above and this bun costs $2.70.

For me, I had food from the Vietnamese stall. I was feeling extremely hungry so I had the 2 meats and 1 veg. (instead of 2 veg, 1 meat)

This is the ginger and lemongrassy chicken side of the plate.

BIZ Vietnamese Stall Food

The other side I had the beef stew. I think only paid $3.50 for it.

Two other colleagues had food from the Malay stall. The Malay stall seemed to have changed operators since the last time we were here. Dpuk said it's not bad except that the sambal was not as nice as the previous operator. I think this is $2.20.

We have been eating canteen food. Partly because we have been busy and also because it's cheap. Everyone needs to watch our weight before CNY! hehe...

Vietnamese Stall @ Business Canteen, NUS

It has been a long long time since I ate at the NUS Business Canteen. It's the university holidays, so it's less stressful to find a place to sit here. But there's also a downside eating here during the holidays. Not all stalls are open during this time of the year.

Colleagues and I decided to eat here and we thought we would have some Vietnamese food. While queueing up, we saw this new dish, (new to me because I have not been here for a long time) that consists of raw watercress and beef slices. Well, it looks tempting on the serving trays!

When I got nearer to the serving lady, I saw they had beef stew too. I was also tempted by it! I want it all! So I ordered both together with a vegetable sidedish.

Vietnamese Mixed Rice

Another colleague ordered the same thing too. We all think it's nice.

The raw watercress had some tangy dressing on it. That made is so tasty yet so light! The beef slices (a few more hidden below the greens) was delicious too! Thinking of it makes me wanna go back for more. :-p

The stew was not too bad too. Ah... for only $4 for this meal was very worth it!

Cafe Le Caire @ NUS Business Canteen

Colleagues and I had a quick and simple lunch at the NUS Business Canteen. There's this Cafe Le Caire that has been around for some time, but we never bought anything from there when we visit this place.

Whenever you walk past, you can smell the fragrant meats from the gyros grill. Last week we decided to give it a try.

I had the chicken stew (can't remember the name) set. It was not bad. The rice is quite nice.
But I sure wish I had more chicken, think the portions a little tiny. But I think it's around $2.50 only, so you can't expect a lot of meat.

Chicken

Another colleague had the Ba'mia. (Lamb and Okra Stew).
Looks good too. He saw the kebabs and decided to try it as well.

Mutton and Kebab

We ate here because we wanted to try something different.
Cafe Le Caire here is a small stall only. I heard the main store at Arab St sells more things.

Vietnamese Food @ NUS Business Canteen

A quick post as I have been extremely busy these few days. This was lunch few days ago when I ate at the NUS Business Canteen.

What a coincidence that I met an old friend there. I seldom come to this canteen, and he works in Science Park and also seldom come here, I think it's the first time this year here.

This is food from the Vietnamese stall. With the swine flu around, I guess I will still eat pork. The lady stacks the food up very high.

The rice is hidden behind, and no I did not do adjust the vegetable and meat. ;-)
Around 5 pieces of Vietnamese style pork, and 1 big scoop of greens. $2.

Pork with Green Veggies

Oh yes, a bowl of complimentary soup.
Simple, satisfying and cheap lunch.

I was also tempted to 'add extra ingredients', but decided I should eat less. LOL.
The other stew looks good too.

Vietnamese Grilled Pork Chop Noodles @ Business Canteen

This is only available on Wednesday at the Vietnamese Stall in the NUS Business Canteen.

I wanted to try this for some time, but never got to this canteen on a Wednesday. Last Wednesday, colleagues and I made a trip there and got to try it. The reason I wanted to try it is because the Vietnamese students seems to be always ordering it. Why? Why? Curious to find out why they like it so much?

It looks simple isn't it? It also looks kinda dry. But....

When you lift up the 'frills' on top, you see this deliciously grilled pork chop.
Looks normal, but somehow, the whatever marinate they use and makes these few pieces of grilled meat taste so delicious.

When you order they pour a scoop of 'liquid' over the dry noodles. This 'liquid' or sauce taste very addictive. Its a mix of fish sauce, lime juice and other ingredients that I can't really decipher at the moment. (Good excuse to eat it again).

The crisp lettuce, strings of carrots and cucumber slices make it very healthy and light. The cold noodles makes it quite appetizing as well. This is it all mixed up. After mixing, it does not taste dry at all.

Yup, the price is only $2.50. I should make a trip there again.

Colleagues and I are beating the inflation by eating cheaper food these few days. NUS Canteens seems like a good place to hunt for food this week. All the students have finished their exams and is staying away. :-)

Beef Stew Noodles, Vietnamese Stall @ NUS Business Canteen

A quick lunch over at the NUS Business Canteen. It was a Tuesday and this was the special that is available on Tuesdays only.

It was very tasty and the beef was tender and was generous too. Looks clear, but it is spicy! Yum! $2.50

With Singapore's inflation hitting 6.7% last month, we got to thank food vendors like this who still maintained their prices and continue to give us delicious food.

Realized a few stalls that I frequently visit has raised their prices. Sigh...

Vietnamese @ NUS Business Canteen

This was lunch last week at the Business Canteen at NUS. I read from the baker who cooks that she likes the food here too!

This is the Phở that I had. It's very simple and nice dish. One thing I like about Vietnamese dishes is the fresh herbs that they put on top.

Phở is pronounced to sound like 'fur'. Yes I had problem trying to pronounce it too previously.

The Vietnamese stall at the Business Canteen serves different specials daily! You see lots of Vietnamese students buying food here, so I guess it's one of the best around. It's cheap too. Only $2.50.

I have not visited Vietnam, so I am not sure how Phở taste there. But many of my friends and I, we miss the Phở in Melbourne! Right in Swanston Street there's a Viet place that served delicious Vietnamese food, and not forgetting the suburb of Richmond and Springvale. Anyone here love the Vietnamese food in Melbourne? :-)

Vietnamese @ Business Canteen, NUS

Today with the same colleagues that had lunch with me yesterday, we ventured into another NUS Canteen.

We went to the less crowded canteen. We think this less crowded canteen has more yummy food! I had the rice from the Vietnamese stall. You can always see lots of Vietnamese students buying from this stall. Me too. LOL.

The way they cook the meat dishes are different from the normal 'chinese' chap chai peng. They really use lots of aromatics like ginger, lemon grass, fish sauce, etc.. in the cooking. It somehow taste really good and fragrant.

You know for most stores, you order 2 veg and 1 meat and it comes quite pathetic in portion, but this stall gives quite generous portions. People who orders from here usually only have 1 veg and 1 meat. The veg portion is big. It is $2 usually.

What I had above was 2 meat instead. I ordered the cabbage and lemon grass chicken. $2. Then i felt like having their stuff toufu. $1 extra.

Beijing Feng Wei @ NUS Business Canteen

This was colleague's lunch. I had Indian food, that's not so photo worthy. LOL
If you like dumplings, you can pop over the NUS Business Canteen on Thursday. The Beijing Fengwei stall only sells dumplings on Thursdays.

10 big dumplings for $3.
If you order the 20 pieces version, I think it is $5. (I don't think anyone can finish 20 of them!!)

Some side dishes that goes along if you like. This delicious spicy mix is only $1.

Have a blessed long Good Friday weekend!
