Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

If you are a seafood fan, have you heard or been to 'Crab in da Bag' at Big Splash?
It's a Southern Louisiana style seafood restaurant but with a local twist that has just opened at East Coast Park.

The concept here is quite interesting. You eat from the table! The food is served in plastic bags!
From that you could have guessed that you will be using your hands/fingers to eat!

Ordering is simple too.
Choose your seafood, choose add-ons, choose your seasoning, choose your spice level and that's it.

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

The star dish of most tables here is the Caboodle Boil. More of that later in the post.
It's so memorable that I have to put that photo right on top!

This place opened its door in early September and it has been very popular. You are advised to make reservations especially if you are coming on weekends.

The owners love the atmosphere of seafood restaurants in California where diners eat off the table in big groups. They also rip and tear plastic bundles and so they want to bring this experience to Singapore. The tables are lined with white waxed paper, so the food doesn't seep through.

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

The seafood that you ordered will be cooked and then placed in food safe plastic bags then mixed with the special sauces. The sauces might be familiar with locals as it's of Asian flavours.

The serving staff will bring the 'bag' to your table and help you open it.

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

This was a bag of prawns in Caboodle Mix ($20). A signature sauce made with a combination of local and cajun spices, lots of garlic and butter! It's a very addictive sauce. I love the amount of garlic that they put inside.

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

More prawns! Prawns lovers would not run out of the different kind of flavours you can have your prawns cooked.

The main sauces that you can choose with your seafood here are:
- Ultimate Curry: it's a kind of Northern Malaysian Curry. (Think sambal stingray and not curry chicken)
- Caboodle Mix: combination of local and Cajun spices, garlic and butter.
- Mum's Special: Sauteed onion rings and garlic in savoury, sweet and sour brown sauce.

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

The bag of clams ($13) in Ultimate Curry was delicious, order some rice to mop up the sauces. Since there's no cutlery, I used the clam shells to scoop up my rice. LOL

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

The sides of Crinkled Cauliflower ($8) was also very delicious. It's not the usual white caulis that we are familiar with, it's darkish. Try it, you might get addicted to it too! The crispy baby squids are also quite tasty.

Now to show you the Caboodle Boil ($299).

It's good for 6 guys/gals. It has 6 Mini Lobsters, 2 Sri Lankan Crabs, 500gm of King Crab Legs, 500gm Yabbies, 500gm Prawns, 500gm Clams, Sausages, Corn and Potatoes boiled in a blend of herbs and local spices.

I managed to take a short video of it. You can see how big the pot is. Yes, everyone gets excited when it's served on the table.

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

The seafood are already very delicious on its own. Try it on its own or dip it in some dipping sauces that is provided. (The dipping sauces are: Exotic Soy Dip, Green Bird Dip, Zesty Mayo Dip).

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

Another view of the spread! Take your time to eat!
Probably a meal that no one will be fiddling with their mobile phones and every will have saucy fingers!

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

The mini lobsters...
Squeeze more lemons on it if you want. I did on my seafood.

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

I think it's trying to tell me, eat me, don't let me die in vain!

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

It's interesting to find sausages in the mix. I love sausages so am quite happy to find it inside thought it might be weird. It's gonna be messy, so they give all diners a big plastic bib, like how my fellow dining companion is wearing above.

Crab in da Bag @ Big Splash

Some super old style desserts that I was told many familiars prepared. Not in my family. We have our different kinds of homestyle desserts.

A very interesting concept, something new in Singapore and suitable for families or big groups. Add this to your big group gathering places. Going in bigger groups enables you to order more things too and also more people to split the bill. LOL

A very special thanks to Amanda who invited us over for dinner here.

McDonald's East Coast Park

Probably the McDonald's that most people in Singapore have visited at least once in their lifetime!
It's a place to grab a drink and some air-con after a run, cycling or skating.
A place to seek refuge when you are at East Coast Park and it rains!

It's also the first Drive-Thru, the first Skate-Thru, the first 24 hours outlet in Singapore too!

McDonald's East Coast Park Singapore

Today's the last day where McDonald's operating here at Marina Cove.

This morning, KopiKosongGirl and I was traveling to Bedok on the ECP to celebrate a friend's kid's 1st birthday. Guess what we did? We detour and thought we would have a last meal here!

I saw a colleague from work too and he said: "having a last meal here too"?

McDonald's East Coast Park Singapore

It was crowded, very crowded!
It has been a long time since I was here, I am more of the West Coast Park McDonalds person since it opened and my favourite is probably King Albert Park.

McDonald's East Coast Park Singapore

KKG and I were surprised that there was a board McDonald's fans put message on it!

McDonald's East Coast Park Singapore

Probably the most interesting 'piece' we saw on the board!

McDonald's East Coast Park Singapore

Probably the only McDonald's that when it moves, has a farewell party!

McDonald's East Coast Park Singapore

Oh.... If you are up early on a Sunday morning at 8 AM, head to this branch!
There's gonna be a McDonald's "Walk With Us" from the East Coast Park branch to the new East Coast Seafood Centre branch!

First 500 there gets a goodie bag and Ronald McDonald would lead the walk!
There's also special appearance by Birdie, Grimace and Hamburglar too! (Remember them?)

Jumbo Seafood @ East Coast Seafood Centre

We welcomed back one of our niece who flew back from her school's Overseas Immersion Programme to Vietnam. Singapore school kids are really fortunate eh? The government gives them Edusave that can be used for such activities.

Dorcas is one of our many favourite niece and she never fails to bring smiles to everyone's faces. We found out that she was even 'crowned' Princess on the trip there for one of their activities. We wanted to surprise her! We all went to the airport to give her a big welcome home!

While waiting, we saw many people holding up signs. Hotels have their nice folder with their guests name printed on it. Most tour agents hold crumpled flimsy paper with some scribbles. I even noticed banks picking up their customers? Wow... I am sure that person must have tonnes of money with that bank!

I decided to do the same. I took up my iPad and wrote on it! "Welcome Home Princess Dorcas!". It was fun to see her other classmates saw the sign and shouted. Even her teacher said: "Princess, someone's here to pick you!" It was fun!

iPad as Airport Welcome Sign

Just before we went to the airport for the pickup, we had a quick dinner at Jumbo at East Coast Seafood Centre. (Aunt has the Jumbo discount card). We remember that the airport is still under renovation and there's nothing to eat there. We did not have the usual dishes you would order at Jumbo. It's some quick and relatively cheaper food.

Hey, this Jumbo has a different menu we noticed. It's has a more touristy menu! They even have Satay!

*** satay ***

The satay here is quite good. Surprise eh? If you have guests visiting you, and it's the last meal before they head to the airport, this might be a good place to bring them! After dinner and it's off to the airport!

Satay

*** mi goreng ***

Their version here is a bit more wet. The one at Red House we had half a month ago was nicer. But we still walloped it all.

*** kueh tiao basah ***

Seafood Hor Fun. Our second carbo dish. More seafood that Hor Fun eh?

Hor Fun

*** tulang khinzir ***

This is one delicious rendition of their Pork Ribs. It was topped with pork floss too!
Housewives at home, you know what you can do to make your dishes tastier and nicer. If you have pork floss, sprinkle some over it. :-)

Pork Ribs

*** kapis keladi ***

Scallops in mini yam rings are delicious. It comes with some sweet sauce that I used to fill up the top of the scallop. Put the whole thing in your mouth and you taste sweet, savoury, crispiness, firmness of the scallops. All in one. Your mouth will like it!

*** cakoi ikan dan bijan ***

Dough Fritters with fish paste and sesame seeds.
It looks like we were snacking away doesn't it?

You Tiao

*** sambal kangkong ***

One thing that we always enjoy eating. Sambal kangkong.
I guess this dish is only nice when you have it outside of your home. Home kitchen just does not have the large flame to heat up woks to cook this with the 'wok hei'. :-)

Sambal Kangkong

Pardon my Malay translation for titles today. (I have been trying different languages haha)
I am not even sure if it's accurate enough. It's all thanks to google.

Oh, we did notice something about Jumbo. The table beside us were a group of Caucasian teenagers who were having crabs and all the 'must have dishes' when dining in Singapore. We saw that the restaurants actually offer individual billing! That's something new.

Red House @ East Coast Seafood Centre

This was taken almost two weeks ago! (How time flies eh!) We were at the airport to pick up Mum.

One of the nearest place to have a welcome home dinner was at the East Coast Seafood Centre. We have not had dinner at Red House for the longest time, so we thought we will try their food. We were lucky to be there early. We did not make any reservation and still managed to get a seat for a table of 7.

These are the Fresh Prawns drunken with Hua Tiao and Herbs.

We ordered this because we wanted to have these succulent prawns. Don't they look absolutely lovely?
But the excuse we had was, Mummy has not have them for 3 months. LOL. (As if they do not have prawns in the UK.)

The broth with Hua Tiao and herbs simmered with fresh prawns were absolutely delightful.

The braised spinach tofu with Honshimeiji.

Don't you think we are boring people?  Why are we always ordering reconstituted tofu that has been mixed with some vegetable with mushrooms on top? They were not bad. But a simple dish like this, most decent restaurants have almost perfected it.

All they need is the person recommending the dishes saying, it's our 'signature dish' or it's 'homemade', there is a 90% chance we will order it. Don't you think so?

This is something different that we don't usually order. BBQ Squid with Crunchy Jellyfish. If you happen to come here, you should try their BBQ Squid. They are good! Very good.

They were taken off the BBQ grill at the correct time. They were soft when you bite it. The sauce that was it must have caramelised nicely so it was fragrant and tasty. It came with a 'thai-ish' herby sourish dip.

Mee Goreng.  Another family favourite. Their version here was nice. Spicy, savoury, slightly sweetish. Good good.

The Braised Gluten Puff and Bamboo Pith with Seasonal Vegetables.
Although I am not a fan of all the gluten based stuff, this was surprisingly good. In fact after the first bite, I took another piece.

The Par Tin Fish with the chef's Spicy Bean Sauce.

Fish always taste good when they are fresh. For me, I think Par Tin fish always goes well with some spicy sauce. It will mask any muddy taste the fish might have.

Chilli Crab is chilli crab lah. But they call it Crabs in Red House Chilli Stew here.

We did realise that their crabs here were not too expensive. We only had one crab as we have ordered so many other things. This crab we had here was about $30 plus only. Maybe it's just that the market price for crabs were lower that day?

Of course you have to order the man tous to mop up the chilli crab sauce.
Yum Yum....

Oh, by the time we finished our dinner, it was already so dark.
The whole place was so packed too!

Tung Lok Seafood @ Marine Cove (East Coast Park)

Note: Today's post has been brought to you courtesy of Standard Chartered Bank.

Barry and Fin, the two fish that you most probably would have seen on television, invited me for a meal again! This time it is to Tung Lok Seafood. Look at the shock of their faces when it's to another seafood place. LOL!

Other than Barry and Fin from Standard Chartered Bank, we had 2 folks from HungryGoWhere, a rep from 24Seven Communications and LadyIronChef joining me for dinner.

Barry & Finn paid for our meal.

So what was for dinner? We started with this huge Special Chilled Seafood Platter. Just look at it! Ooo... Cold Crabs, Kanpachi Sashimi, Mekajika Sashimi, Thai Style Crab Meat Salad, Fresh Oyster with Chilli Sauce and Mexican Ceviche.

I like the sashimi. The oysters was not bad too.

Our dear Fin had her first ever Oyster! Being a fish, I guess it was hard for her to swallow her fellow sea creatures. haha...

Cold Crab, Kanpachi Sashimi, Mekajika Sashimi, Thai Style Crab Meat Salad, Fresh Oyster with Chilli Sauce, Mexican Ceviche

Look at Little Miss Crab. They sure are looking crappy! Look at the stare she is giving me! I have learned to ignore their stares. ;-)

Special Chilled Seafood Platter

These deep fried prawns with wasabi-mayo sauce is good too. I would personally like it more fiery. I added more wasabi (from the sashimi) to it and it really gave a rush off my head. Woosh!

Deep fried Prawns with Wasabi-mayo Sauce

This is the oven-roasted sliced pork shoulder. It reminds me of Bangkok Street Food. I think many of us liked this.

Over Roasted Sliced Pork Shoulder

This the Tung Lok's version of Chilli Crab. It was above average, but did not really wow me.

But the more watery sauce did make some at the table happy. They loved this fried mantou with the chilli crab sauce.

Fried Mantou

I prefer the Black Pepper Crab. I have my preferred Black Pepper Crab elsewhere, but this is quite ok.

Black Pepper Crab with Fresh Peppercorns

This is nice too. Steamed Razor Clam with garlic. The vermicelli has soaked up all the juices. Really nice!

This pretty dish is Chinese Spinach simmered with Nameko Mushroo in Fish Stock.

We were already full with the above, but we were tempted by the desserts.
This is what some had, the chilled mango pudding.

I had the Chilled Lime Sherbet with Lemongrass Jelly. I liked it.
The lime sherbet was light and refreshing and the lemongrass jelly was nice too.

Siam Kitchen @ Parkway Parade

This is a continuation after yesterday's Yee Sang.

The food we ordered was served after they cleared the big Yee Sang platter. We were already full after all the vegetables! Luckily we had foresight and ordered the following to be shared. It's might be difficult if you are out with friends or colleagues, but with your own family, it is easy. ;-)

The kind waitress gave us a plate each and we just scoop a bit each from this individual portion dishes. The Olive Rice, that was quite lovely, though a tiny bit oily.

Olive Rice

The Phad Thai's not bad too.

Seafood Phad Thai

The Thai Fried Chicken's not too shabby, but as you can see a bit oily.

Thai Chicken Wings

The salted fish bean sprout's salty. LOL. We ordered two bowls of white rice to eat with this.

Bean Sprouts with Dried Salted Fish

The Beef Soup Noodle's salty but quite flavourful. It has lots of bean sprouts which I like. :-)

Beef Noodles

The green curry's quite thick and nice too.

Green Curry

We had two bowls of individual Seafood Tom Yam soup to share.

Seafood Tom Yam Soup

Err, I am not a fan of this kind of pancake, so I shall not comment. ;-p
Maybe more prawns would be better?

Prawn Pancake

But I like the coconut ice cream. It was our cousin's order, but we all had a tiny scoop or two from her bowl.

Eating tiny amounts of food from different plate can be quite filling!
