Dilmah High Tea Set @ Carpenter and Cook

Carpenter and Cook (C&C)  is probably the cafe that we visit most often because it's in our neighbourhood. We will walk in and pick up a pastry or two on the way home. For the longest time, I have never blogged about this place because we don't want to invite people into our neighbourhood and cause a 'congestion' to a place we love.

So, why am I blogging about it now? There are now more cafes along this "Carbo Street" (aka Lorong Kilat) to spread the cafe crowd, so it's a good time to introduce this gem in our neighbourhood.

If you love their pastries and other baked goods, you might probably wish they come in a smaller size so that you can order a variety to try.  Good news! C&C is participating in the "Host a Dilmah Real High Tea Challenge" and they will be pairing food with the Dilmah Exceptional Premium Tea Series.

It will only be available this week (20-28 June 2015).

Carpentar and Cook, Dilmah High Tea Set
Dilmah High Tea Set for 2 ($20 per pax)

For $20 per person, you get to choose 1 flavour of tea from the Dilmah Exceptional Premium Tea Series and a selection of different pastries and other bakes.

If you prefer to dine alone, you can still have the tea set (which comes in a 2-tier platter) and sample the variety of food.

(This Cafe is also a shop that sells furniture and other antiques, you'll be served on these lovely antique china and cutlery! When they first opened, I set my eyes on the church pew chairs and wanted to replace our dining room chairs with them, but it was a bit out of my budget then.)

Carpentar and Cook, Dilmah High Tea Set

What we had earlier today:

- Earl Grey & Lavender Mini Loaf
- Valrhona Caraibe Chocolate & Maldon Sea Salt Caramel Tart

Their Earl Grey and Lavender Mini Loaf this week is made with the premium series Dilmah Earl Grey. Still having the texture and fragrance of Earl Grey. Not too strong for me.

My favourite of the day is the Valrhona Caraibe Chocolate & Maldon Sea Salt Caramel Tart. I have to confess I am bias to anything chocolate. Made with one of the better chocolate around, it's something you got to try.

Carpentar and Cook, Dilmah High Tea Set

This is something that Anglophile loves. Scones and Clotted Cream. The scones (made with French butter) and jam are made in-premise.  The only thing that they do not make are the clotted cream - they import them from Britain.

They served both good old plain scones and mixed fruit scones.

Carpentar and Cook, Dilmah High Tea Set

The green apple and cucumber finger sandwiches were lovely.  Sis bit into it and said it's brioche because of the noticeable fragrant buttery taste.  I have never had green apple, cucumber and yoghurt sandwiches, and was pleasantly surprise that it was refreshing.  I thought they added a secret ingredient because I tasted something pickled in the sandwich.

Their Tiramisu is made from the coffee which they brew with the coffee machine. They don't use the usual 'coffee liqueur' that most home bakers use (i.e. kahlua or amarula). I am not telling you what they use, I am sworn by secrecy. Taste it and see if you like them.

Macarons! Everyone love a macaron that has been nicely aged, still having a hard shell and slightly chewy inside. It's best paired with the Rose with French Vanilla Dilmah Tea. Why? It's a raspberry and lychee macaron! They use fresh lychee that is now in season. French dessert fans will know what flavour that will be! Ispahan!

What would you recommend?
- This set during this week is good and it's a good price. Our usual takeaway of 2 items already cost around $14. This set allows you to sit and have the items above and also a pot of tea.
- If you have room for more food, we love their Lemon Tart! It's one of the items that we always have for takeaway.

Baby notes:

Crowded cafes are usually a no no for babies. Weekends are really busy here, so parents with babies should avoid it. Weekdays are all right though, we live nearby and we know when people flock to our neighbourhood.

Other notes:
This was an arranged tasting session, thanks to Dilmah Teas. We paid for our takeaways that we could not resist, i.e. the Lemon Tarts.

A for Arbite, A for Amex's #30liciousAmex deals

If you have not read about the American Express #30liciousAmex deals, you probably have been having a nap for too long. Well, it's not too late to find out.

American Express and HungryGoWhere jointly present 30licious - S$30++ culinary treats for 30 days from 3 November to 2 December 2014. It's their little treat for Amex card holders. I have tried the  #30liciousAmex meal at A for Arbite and it's pretty good!

(If you don't  have an Amex, you top it up to S$35++)

I recently went to A for Arbite with the Amex and HungryGoWhere folks to try out their $30 dinner deals. This is my report of the place and I think I will be back for more of their other food. I see things in the regular menu that the different family members at home will love.

Back to their #30liciousAmex deal here, the set dinner consists of a Starter, Main, Dessert and a drink as well. Quite a good value if you have been eating out. The set meal is for at least 2 persons, so you can get to taste everything you see here!

1) Starter (Soup of the day or Duck Roll)

A for Arbite @ American Express #30liciousAmex
The Soup of the Day we had was the seafood soup. I personally love tomato based soup and this was nice. It had a nice viscosity and it was quite rich and hearty. It reminded me of a French bouillabaisse. A version without all the loads of fish and seafood required in a bouillabaisse, but excellent enough for such a deal.

A for Arbite @ American Express #30liciousAmex
If you are not a soup person, try the Duck Rolls. They have done this version rather well. It's like a Ngor Hiang that is made from duck. Rather interesting I would say. Duck rilettes with dried mushrooms, water chestnuts and grapes!

Nicely crisped on the outside and they have pickles to counter balance the rich taste of the duck. The chilli gastrique is where the crispy duck rolls are resting.

2) Main (Salted Egg Crab Pasta or Beef Stew)

A for Arbite @ American Express #30liciousAmex

Salted Egg Crab pasta sounds like what you like? It that sounds utterly sinful, it's not that 'strong' in the saltiness scale. I will say it's the healthier version. The pasta they use is Zita pasta and it has salted egg, crab meat, chilli and hints of curry leaf flavour all mixed in. It's also served with a  piece of deep fried soft shell crab.

This is the lighter of the two mains.

A for Arbite @ American Express #30liciousAmex

If you like a bowl of hearty stew. Try this. The Beef Daube. I personally love this dish more as I love the flavour of it. Beef Shin with celery, carrots and red wine. Braised till it is just tender and not too soft and mushy. It's so pretty how they plated the dish with fried onion rings stacking on top of each other.

(I took a peep at the usual menu and this dish already cost $25 and the crab pasta $24.)

3) Dessert (Edith's Mess or Honey and Date Crème Brûlée)

A for Arbite @ American Express #30liciousAmex

Edith's Mess is a very interesting and beautiful mess indeed. It has the slight tartness from the passsionfruit jelly, the sweetness from rock melon ice cream. If you want some crunch, the honey comb brittle gives you time to chew while your dinner companion talks! I love the honey comb brittle and the rock melon ice cream!

A for Arbite @ American Express #30liciousAmex

Honey and Date Crème Brûlée is for those who likes a twist to the usual Crème Brûlée. This version enhanced with dates and honey. Quite a good combination.

The meal also comes with a non alcoholic drink that you can order from the menu. Quite a good deal, if you have tried this place, I think I will be back for the other regular food on the menu. It's looking very tempting and the chef is pretty good.

So if you think it sounds like a good deal and you want to know what other restaurants and where you can book this meal, head on to http://book.hungrygowhere.com/30licious There are over 30 places where you can book.

FIJI Water Halloween Set Dinner at Cafe Melba - October 2013.

It was a thundery and wet Thursday night, but I went ahead and cross the imaginary centre line in Singapore to cross to the Eastern side of Singapore.

Having lived a few years as a student in Melbourne, I was tempted to come and see what Cafe Melba has to offer when I was invited to try their set dinners for October.

This Cafe is not named after Dame Nellie Melba the Australian opera soprano that most Aussies would know. This is a combination of the two words Melbourne (MELB) and Asia (A). Determine to see how I can match this to something Melbourne, this almost all glass building has a slanted roof and it reminds me of the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, slightly I guess.

Cafe Melba

I like the concept of open kitchen and here, you can see the food being prepared. The kitchen here and the other sister restaurants by Tadcaster Hospitality is led by Chef Kacey Whaitiri-Roberts. Chef Kacey worked for Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s London before coming to Singapore.

Love the deco and set up of this place. Super high ceiling, lush greenery outside, and this place has a big field in front and it's great if you have kids and want to let them run around. It's a great place during the day or weekends to let them run.

If you love bringing your pets out with your meal, Cafe Melba's alfresco area welcomes your pets. The night that we were there, we could see quite a few woof woofs there. ;-)

Cafe Melba October Specials

For Thursdays Nights in month of October (Oct 10, 17, 24, 31), they are having a special 3-course set dinner at $45++.

If you visit on Thursdays nights, you can watch 'halloween themed' movies under the stars.
The list of shows is available above. The 7 pm shows are more family friendly.

Cafe Melba
We had some pizza bread to start. It comes with 3 interesting dips.

Cafe Melba October Specials

The set dinner is very straight forward. Set dinner here seems very reasonably priced too.
To 'taste' everything in the menu, Camemberu and I alternate our orders, so we could try everything.

The set dinners also comes with a 500ml bottle of FIJI Water.

Cafe Melba
Wild Mushroom Soup with Truffle Oil

Made from 4 different kinds of mushrooms, it's then blended to give it a nice smooth soup. It was a cold night and this warm soup did warmed up our tummies. Chef Kacey was around and he said the mushroom soup is prepared using FIJI water as well. The splash of truffle oil will give the extra aroma to the soup.

Cafe Melba
Saku Tuna Carpaccio with Guacamole and Bloody Mary

For those who do not fancy soups as starters, this would be a nice alternative. A beautiful alternative too. I like the clean taste of it too. The tuna rested a bed of guacamole and the bloody mary was made into a slice of jelly on top of the tuna.

If you are dining with a partner, order both and share to try everything like we did.

Cafe Melba
Oven Baked Sea Bass with Smoked Tomato and FIJI Water Consomme

The sea bass was crusty on top yet tender below.  The consomme is very interesting. We were told the chef smoked it first to give it a nice flavour profile and the used FIJI Water to make the consomme. It had a very clear Japanese flavour to it. Probably made using konbu.

Cafe Melba
Beef Rendang with Shoe-String Fries and Pizza Bread

The managing director Tony Coughlan is from New Zealand, but has an Indonesian mother-in-law who makes superb beef rendang. He likes to eat his fries and this rendang, so this is how he eats it. Guess what? It works for me too! They got his mother-in-law in to teach the chefs how to prepare this dish.

This portion is perfect for guys who eats a lot. A nice portion of beef rendang. It's quite spicy and 'damn shiok'. Comes with a bowl of shoe-string fries that's annoying so delicious that you will eat it all up. The pizza bread is for you to wipe your plate clean of the rendang sauce.

Cafe Melba
Peach Melba

For the name's sake, Vanilla Ice Cream, Raspberry Puree and toasted almonds to give it a sweet ending.

I did notice that they have planned the menu quite well. One lighter and one heavier meal, both in portions and taste. I had Carpaccio and the Rendang, so it was a nice portion for my meal. I feel this is a good value Dinner Set at $45 ++.

Pizza and Other stuff:

Our host was very gracious and wanted to stuff us with more food. Some of their popular 'shared food' is their pizzas.

Cafe Melba
Tandoori Chicken Pizza

When you have a nice recipe for your dough, you can then throw in generous amounts of ingredients and make delicious pizzas. Onions, coriander, mozzarella and mint yoghurt with tandoori chicken gives it a very nice moist pizza.

To me, there are 2 kinds of pizza eaters, those who likes their pizzas dry and then complain about soggy pizzas. Then there are those like me that loves moist ingredients on top and complain if the pizza is dry. I remember a nice little Italian pizza place near where I stayed in Melb that makes the most moist topping pizzas. They pack in so much ingredients (triple of what you see above) and that makes us always go back to them.

When the pizza arrives, eat it straight away to enjoy it. I like the yoghurt used instead of the usual tomato paste. Gives it a really different feel to your regular pizza. Yes, I love thin crust pizzas!

Cafe Melba
Three Little Pigs Pizza

Oinksters would definitely love this. The unholy trinity of home-cured bacon, honey ham and pepperoni. Give it a good slosh of tomato paste on the base and generous amount mozzarella. Woo hoo! 'nuff said. Yes, it was a moist pizza too!

Cafe Melba
Crayfish Linguini

When there's pizza, pasta takes a back seat for me. I just had a mouth of this. Linguine was al dente, crayfish was good!

Cafe Melba
Mini doughnuts with chocolate sauce.

There are those that still prefer this to KrispyKreme right? ;-)

Cafe Melba

When the weather's good and you want to sit on the field, you can prebook your gourmet picnic basket at $50++ per basket.

You get 2 bottles of FIJI Water, 2 soft drinks, Popcorn or Kacang Puteh, Potato Chips or Nachos and a choice of either Mini Sliders or Mini Fish and Chips for your main bites.

Necessary Provisions @ Eng Kong Terrace (Upper Bukit Timah)

It was the morning that we finally did what we said we would do since we got married. Wake up early and view the sunrise regularly! Still can't believe we actually woke up so early and went over the other side of the island so early in the morning! We did and took a lot of photos. I only posted one on the other blog here.

It's also an extremely hungry affair when you get up early. Especially so after the sun rises and the beautiful rays shines on your skin. Only the rays of Vitamin D is not enough!

The wife needs some Vitamin C too. C for Caffeine. We drove to the Marina Bay Public Golf Course because there was an excellent view and someone told us there were nice food too. We were too early it seems, no food in the mornings! We had two cans of soft drink admired the city skyline and checked our Instagram accounts (@keropokman and @kopikosonggirl), FB etc and then decided to leave.....

We remembered Necessary Provisions which is not too far from our home. If you remember Henry's Congressional, they are the same folks behind Necessary Provisions.

Necessary Provisions

If you are familiar with this area, this same shop lot was occupied by Al Ameen. It seems that Al Ameen has been closing down at least 2 of the outlets. Hmm....

Anyway, if you like old rugged places that has been very minimally done up to look chic and sleek, this is one of those places to check out.

Necessary Provisions

When you enter, a big huge communal table is at the centre. A huge vase with flowers that regularly rearranged is the centre piece. Lilies always give out a nice scent, so it was pleasant as we walked in.

A sizeable collection of food and other magazines are placed on the table. So you can sit and read slowly. Reminds me of Bill's Sydney, a similar concept but still different. A nice adaptation I would say.

Necessary Provisions

Since we were there early, all the cakes and savouries we wanted to try were not available yet. Still being made in the kitchen. You can see on the nice cool rock solid table near the window that it's all empty.

Necessary Provisions

Please just ignore the derrière of the person on the left.
Look at that piece of furniture with a pot of orchid on it instead. Nice ya?

That's where they keep the cutlery. It was the first few days when we visited, so they were still getting the hang of it. I am not sure if we are to self service.

Necessary Provisions

That's the Coffee Machine. The Spirit model by Kees van der Westen. The designer that was designing motorbikes before he started designing coffee machines. Nice piece eh?

I am not a coffee person, but I always think that machines rules, if you get good coffee beans and a trained person to use the machine, you can get good coffee. A techie's view? Don't slam me! OK, you do need a real person who is artistic to do the coffee art. ;-)

They have a monthly menu. With Sambal Fried Rice, Pasta, etc from 6 pm onwards, it's does look delicious on someone's Instagram that I follow.

Necessary Provisions

For that morning, we had French Toast ($5) which was 3 huge and thick slices.
Quite filling to eat all three for a lady, so I had some of the wife's order.

Necessary Provisions

The wife's Vitamin C. A Flat White (8 oz) - $5.

It's her kind of a coffee. She says it's balance mix of coffee and milk. She doesn't like too milky that overwhelms the coffee, not too strong a coffee that overwhelms the milk. She says it's the same coffee that she likes from Henry's Congressional.

Necessary Provisions

I had a Banana Nutella Panini. $5.

Nicely toasted and a fair amount of nutella and bananas inside. Guys should have no problem finishing it. If you are super hungry, you might need another one. But it's carbo, so better not eat too much.

Necessary Provisions

Oh, my hot chocolate $6 also have 'chocolate art'.

A nice cosy place to hang around and grab a quick drink and bite. They have various craft beers here too. I think that's what most folks will have when the sun sets.

An alternative place to go other than Carpenter and Cook (at Lorong Kilat) that has been closed the past week to move their kitchen downstairs. They should be reopening soon, spotted from our walks around this neighbourhood. The Udders at Lorong Kilat has recently been renovated too, to create more seating spaces too.

"LIM KOPI for a Cause" with Toast Box

Toast Box and ABLE (Abilites beyond Limitations and Expectiations) collobrate in "LIM KOPI for a cause" Fund Raising Drive.  ABLE - Abilites beyond Limitations and Expectiations Ltd, a charity organisation that strives to enable and empower the phyiscally challenged community to be reintegrated into the main stream society in Singapore.

This is the Toast Box's second year partnership with ABLE and through this collobration, Toast Box's "LIM KOPI for a Cause" Campaign hopes to generate $20,000 of funds that will go towards financing ABLE's assistance programs, beneficaries with acquired or congenital physical disabilities as well as their families and caregivers.

Personally for me, its heartwarming to see local companies support charity orgnaisations with their earnings to good causes.  You can do your part too! From now till end to September 2012, Toast Box will donate 30 cents (SGD) towards raising funds for ABLE with the sale of every promotional set.

In line with the campaign, TOAST BOX has introduced the following items:

Toastbox
NEW Hebi Hiam Thick Toast
With Coffee/ $3.00 or With Kumquat Jelly/ $4.00

I used to almost always eat this toast whenever i order the set with Toast Box.  This NEW Hebi Hiam comes with chuckier dried shrimps (hebi hiam).  It has a more texture feel with the added sugar bits, giving it a sweet yet savory taste.  However this makes it less spicier compared to the original version that Toast Box has.  It will be great for those who prefers a less spicy version of the Hebi Hiam Thick Toast.

Toastbox
French Toast Butter Kaya
With Coffee/$3 or With Kumquat Jelly/$4

This is your usual egg-battered French toast, but with a sweet touch, that comes from the kaya.  Its a well balanced taste.  With a combination of egg, butter and kaya - what bliss for breakfast or snack! A tip: Do consume this immediately when it arrives to your table.  Definitely served best with kopi-c-kosong or teh-si

Toastbox
Chicken Curry
With Kumquat Jelly/$6.30

Should you be looking for a filling meal, Toast Box has a long heralded signature Chicken Curry that will definitely leave you coming back for more! This is a flavourful and mildly spicy coconut-based curry served with tender chicken and large chunks of potatoes.  Choose between fragrant rice or freshly grilled thick toast

Toastbox
Kumquat Jelly Drink

Along with the sets, you can choose to have a refreshing, cold Kamquat Jelly drink.  A familiar taste of thirst quenching drink with chunks of jelly to satisfy.  A delight during the hot and humid weather!

Aside from the above promotional items, Toast Box also serves up other items.
Toastbox
Fish Ball Hor Fun Soup/ $6.20 (a la carte)

Ah! This brings back so much fond memories as you tuck into the hot soup and while munching the fishballs, accompanied with kway teow.  I just recalled days when my mum will pack home a bowl of fishball soup after school on rainy days.

Toastbox
Fried Fish Beehoon Soup/ $6.20 (a la carte)

You may not expect Toast Box to serve up this Fried Fish Bee Hoon, but they have certainly done well with this! Chuncks of fried fish soaked in thick been hoon soup, a bite tells you that fresh fish is used to prepare this. The batter is fragrant, giving you a delicious, non-oily meal.

Aside from enjoying Toast Box coffee in-store, you can also make your very own home brewed Nanyang kopi anytime.  Simply purchased the convenient hand-held coffee-making apparatus with a bag of coffee powder at the promotional price of $25.

Toastbox

From now will end of September 2012, every set (Includes: 1 Toast Box Coffee Brew and 250g Toast Box Coffee Power) sold, Toast Box will donate $2 to ABLE.  What more, the coffee brew is BPA free and is available in 3 colours.

Special Thanks to Haylee & Clara of BreadTalk and Mei Yan of Touch Communications for hosting the group of us.

Maison Ikkoku @ 20 Kandahar Street, Kampung Glam

There's a new coffee place called Maison Ikkoku and it's at Kandahar Street, in the Kampung Glam conservation area.

This whole place is quite big at 4000 sq ft. What they have done is to have 3 different concepts on the same venue. On Level 1 - an artisanal coffee place, Level 2 - a multi-label menswear boutique and Level 3 - a soon to be opened (mid Nov) semi-alfresco cocktail bar.

Maison Ikkoku

I should bring KopiKosongGirl to try this coffee out and see what she thinks.
I am not very much a coffee person.

Maison Ikkoku

I was told the baristas here had been trained by Japanese celebrity barista and latte art specialist, Hiroshi Sawada.

Maison Ikkoku

The menu here is presented on an iPad too.
It's opened by 2 couples, Thomas Ho and Janice Ong with Franz Chua and Shanie Teoh.

Maison Ikkoku

This is Level 1, the artisanal cafe.
It has white walls and copper pipes as lighting. It's chic-retro I would say.

Notice the bottom half of a cupboard hanging on the wall?

Maison Ikkoku

This is the MI Pork Bun or what we usually call the Kong Bak Pau ($3.90). I had a chat with Janice Ong and she said it's a recipe passed down to her from her grandmother. She makes it daily.

Maison Ikkoku

Another interesting food, is the MI Musubi. It's sticky Japanese rice with seasoning and a slice of SPAM luncheon meat.

A chat with Franz Chua said this was actually his packed lunch when he was studying overseas. His wife (then girlfriend to be) would be making this and it's a convenient to bring to classes! So this food brings back memories for him!

Maison Ikkoku

This made me laugh. A carrot cake with a carrot  on top!

Maison Ikkoku

The sample sized carrot cake that we tried was delicious. I asked Franz if they made it as well. The carrot cake is made by one of their friends. They love this friend's carrot cake, so they are ordering from them to have it sold here.

Maison Ikkoku

I was quite fascinated by all these old furniture!
I remember our home had similar ones when I was young!

See more cut off or topless furniture on Level 1?
You will find out why on Level 2!

Maison Ikkoku

Level 2 is the menswear section. The labels here are from Japan, UK, France and USA.

They get mostly Japanese label and Janice says she goes to Japan regular to source for the latest fashion and bring them back to their shop.

Notice where the bags and shoes are placed?
It's the "top part" of the cut off cupboards on Level 1! How clever!

Maison Ikkoku

I am not the usual fashion catch up guy, but it was interesting to browse around.
I got kind of tempted. Hmm...

The brands they carry:
Japan: Deluxe, Discovered, Hobo, Kuro, Lad Musician
USA : Industry of All Nations, MIANSAI by Michel Andrew Saiger, Publish
France: Lucien, Teddyfish, Twins for Peace
    UK: Orlebar Brown

Chatting with Janice, she said her husband Thomas was a total fashion nerd when they were younger. Janice has slowly but surely transform him.  If you are at this place and see a clean shaven guy, that's Thomas. Janice showed a photo of Thomas on his iPhone when he was younger and it was really a transformation!

Maison Ikkoku

This is probably the only place where the husband or boyfriend can shop while the other half can sit at the cafe downstairs. If you need their opinions you can call or text them to walk up!

Maison Ikkoku

This raw canvas bag by Parisian brand Teddyfish bag caught my attention.
Ahem my friends, get the hint? ;-)
