Necessary Provisions @ Eng Kong Terrace (Upper Bukit Timah)

It was the morning that we finally did what we said we would do since we got married. Wake up early and view the sunrise regularly! Still can't believe we actually woke up so early and went over the other side of the island so early in the morning! We did and took a lot of photos. I only posted one on the other blog here.

It's also an extremely hungry affair when you get up early. Especially so after the sun rises and the beautiful rays shines on your skin. Only the rays of Vitamin D is not enough!

The wife needs some Vitamin C too. C for Caffeine. We drove to the Marina Bay Public Golf Course because there was an excellent view and someone told us there were nice food too. We were too early it seems, no food in the mornings! We had two cans of soft drink admired the city skyline and checked our Instagram accounts (@keropokman and @kopikosonggirl), FB etc and then decided to leave.....

We remembered Necessary Provisions which is not too far from our home. If you remember Henry's Congressional, they are the same folks behind Necessary Provisions.

Necessary Provisions

If you are familiar with this area, this same shop lot was occupied by Al Ameen. It seems that Al Ameen has been closing down at least 2 of the outlets. Hmm....

Anyway, if you like old rugged places that has been very minimally done up to look chic and sleek, this is one of those places to check out.

Necessary Provisions

When you enter, a big huge communal table is at the centre. A huge vase with flowers that regularly rearranged is the centre piece. Lilies always give out a nice scent, so it was pleasant as we walked in.

A sizeable collection of food and other magazines are placed on the table. So you can sit and read slowly. Reminds me of Bill's Sydney, a similar concept but still different. A nice adaptation I would say.

Necessary Provisions

Since we were there early, all the cakes and savouries we wanted to try were not available yet. Still being made in the kitchen. You can see on the nice cool rock solid table near the window that it's all empty.

Necessary Provisions

Please just ignore the derrière of the person on the left.
Look at that piece of furniture with a pot of orchid on it instead. Nice ya?

That's where they keep the cutlery. It was the first few days when we visited, so they were still getting the hang of it. I am not sure if we are to self service.

Necessary Provisions

That's the Coffee Machine. The Spirit model by Kees van der Westen. The designer that was designing motorbikes before he started designing coffee machines. Nice piece eh?

I am not a coffee person, but I always think that machines rules, if you get good coffee beans and a trained person to use the machine, you can get good coffee. A techie's view? Don't slam me! OK, you do need a real person who is artistic to do the coffee art. ;-)

They have a monthly menu. With Sambal Fried Rice, Pasta, etc from 6 pm onwards, it's does look delicious on someone's Instagram that I follow.

Necessary Provisions

For that morning, we had French Toast ($5) which was 3 huge and thick slices.
Quite filling to eat all three for a lady, so I had some of the wife's order.

Necessary Provisions

The wife's Vitamin C. A Flat White (8 oz) - $5.

It's her kind of a coffee. She says it's balance mix of coffee and milk. She doesn't like too milky that overwhelms the coffee, not too strong a coffee that overwhelms the milk. She says it's the same coffee that she likes from Henry's Congressional.

Necessary Provisions

I had a Banana Nutella Panini. $5.

Nicely toasted and a fair amount of nutella and bananas inside. Guys should have no problem finishing it. If you are super hungry, you might need another one. But it's carbo, so better not eat too much.

Necessary Provisions

Oh, my hot chocolate $6 also have 'chocolate art'.

A nice cosy place to hang around and grab a quick drink and bite. They have various craft beers here too. I think that's what most folks will have when the sun sets.

An alternative place to go other than Carpenter and Cook (at Lorong Kilat) that has been closed the past week to move their kitchen downstairs. They should be reopening soon, spotted from our walks around this neighbourhood. The Udders at Lorong Kilat has recently been renovated too, to create more seating spaces too.

Chocolato @ Joo Chiat Road

We were visiting a friend who got a new place at the Joo Chiat area. A very nice and cosy place in a very relaxed neighborhood too! After chatting a while, we went walking around the area before we head off for a makan outing.

Jon our friend says he has been addicted to this gelato place and thinks we would all love it. He's very right.

Chocolato

We found out some bad and good news though. The bad news to Jon and the nearby residents, they are moving out of Joo Chiat.

The good news for the rest of us, they are moving to a more central location! (My memory is getting bad, I think it's the Cantonment area if I remembered them correctly)

Chocolato

So many flavours. Jon said that the pistachio is good.

I glanced around and noticed that they are a chocolate place. (The name tells it! haha). It seems they are one of the few companies in Singapore that offers chocolates from single source cocoa beans.

(go do an online search about single source cocoa if you are interested)

Chocolato

This lady (no she said she's not the boss) is a funny lady.

Jon must have been there so often, the lady insist on serving him. She asked the younger boy to serve me instead. Jon's a handsome chap and the lady calls him my Handsome Boy No. 1.

We had 3 other ladies with us, and when they say only one handsome or pretty one around,  she said to me: "OK lah, you are number 2. First time here, cannot be No. 1."

She looked at me again, ya, not as handsome as Jon, but can lah, I give you a No 1 title. No. 1A ok? First position still to Jon. *roll eyes*

Chocolato

I had the Dark Chocolate and Pistachio.
Yup, the chocolate was quite intense, the choc bitterness that I like and some sweetness to it.

The pistachio, oh, how do you describe pistachio? Go to their shop and ask for a sampling!

Texture wise, it might look rough on the photo, but it was really smooth and creamy when it touches your tongue. The sweetness according to my taste buds is just nice for me.

(Maybe I should invest in a refractometer and bring it to all the ice cream and desserts places that I go to so that I can give a scientific measurement of sweetness to my posts!)

Chocolato

You can also order a waffle cone if you like cones.

Shh... we realised something amongst the 5 of us.
If you are on a diet, opt for the cone, it has less gelato in it. (Get the hint?)

Treats from Paris

Our cousin came back from her holiday in Europe and brought us a little treat which we had after dinner at our home tonight.

La Maison Du Chocolat

They liked us did not specifically walk into the shop it seems.
They saw a nice chocolate shop and walked in and like us found out later it's one of the best chocolate shops in Paris!

La Maison Du Chocolat

These little truffles were simply luxurious!

Sweet and yet bitter, it's so smooth and yet the chocolate dusting over it gives it some rough stickiness when it's in your mouth.

One chocolate truffle is never enough!

Laduree Macarons

Our cousin was thinking of us when she was holidaying!
She also brought back a little box of macarons from Laduree!

Laduree Macarons

She and her parents tasted so many kinds of macarons from so many shops. She did her research and went macaron hunting in Paris! We asked her which one she liked, she said Laduree is nicer than Pierre Herme.

The above, the chocolate macarons from Laduree. Since there was so many of us at home, we took out a knife and cut it into small pieces, almost the size of mooncake tasting portions at Takashimaya. OK, that was exaggeration. We cut them into quarters.

Laduree Macarons

Our cousin also said there's macarons sold in McDonald's in Paris as well! Yup, she tried them too! She had giant ones as well from cafe at the corner of her hotel along Champs Elysee, which she whatsapp me. I wondered how many macarons she had on her trip!

The bright yellow macarons is lemon flavoured.

Laduree Macarons

The macarons were hand carried all the way from Paris to London via the Eurostar and then hand carried again from Heathrow to Changi. So the green, lime flavoured macaron got slightly 'kemek'!

The flavours were all very nice. You need to sample them really slowly. It's not only lime or lemon that you taste. You can taste other stuff they put in too! They were oh so good!

Thanks cousin for the sweet treats from Paris!

3 Inch Sin @ Cluny Court, Bukit Timah Road

We had a totally unsatisfying dinner. So to make up for it, we decided to get to some place that has nice dessert. We read about 3 Inch Sin and decided to go try it.  3 Inch Sin is said to use Valrhona chocolate to make their cakes! So we guess it would be a good choice! The moment you step in, the smell of chocolate cake baking in the oven hits you!

Since we were there after dinner, we only had the 3 inch molten cakes. We wanted to try their cakes as well but realised they only sell it by the slice on weekends.

*** 3 inch Molten Chocolate Cake with ice cream ***

The 3 inch molten cake with ice cream

Oh, if you look at the molten cake above, can you see a face? One eye bigger than the other, with lips that is straight not looking very pleased that we are going to eat it? lol...

We ordered one 'original' 3" Molten Cake $6 with additional of macadamia ice cream. ($3)

We had to wait a while for the cake. It was made to order. We were like peeping into the kitchen wondering if that batch was ours! Finally, our was served!Well, well, it was definitively worth the wait. Both Momo and Sis eyes lit up when the cake was served.

Warm, moist, chocolate cake. Topped it with ice cream. At that moment, I guess they totally forgot about the horrible dinner earlier!

*** Mini Molten Cake ***

Mini Molten Cakes

We also ordered the mini molten cakes. It comes in threes. You get to choose 3 flavours too! ($7).
You could have guessed why we had the mini ones right? We wanted to try more flavours!

We had the bitter orange, hazelnut and peanut butter.

Peanut butter oozing out...

This was the peanut butter mini molten cake. I liked the peanut butter ones the most!
It really was very good! I think peanut butter and chocolate cake goes very very well!

Original - chocolate oozes out...

This was the hazelnut mini molten cake. This was the girls' favourite.
Do you feel like licking it now? As I post this up, I feel like having more of it!

It's a very small place, so seats are very very limited.

Truffs @ Telok Ayer Street

A colleague who is currently studying for a Master of Computing at the School of Computing, NUS asked if I wanted to try one of the most delicious chocolate cake around. He and his course mates are doing an assignment for their social media module and for their assignment, they have organised a "The Chocolate Atelier" event.

It all started when colleague gtalk me and asked if I am interested in eating chocolates. He then pasted www.truffs.com.sg to tempt me. Interested to go? I said ok! He then showed me the link http://www.facebook.com/SingaporeCityTruffs. I glanced through it and I told him, I did not win the contest that's at the facebook page. How can I go? He then told me they are the organizer and he can invite me over. All I need to do is to put up a post here for them as part of their assessment. That's all is needed. Oh, that's easy!

*** the shop ***

I thought I was familiar with this area, since I used to have meals at the Amoy Street Food Centre, but I never knew this chocolate shop existed!

Truffs - The Chocolate Atelier

It's very near the Amoy Street market if you are wondering where it is.

Fresh handmade chocolate!

Fresh handmade chocolate! Oh, looking at this already makes me happy!

Located on the 2nd floor of the shop lot, you need to climb this flight of steps up.
I call it the 'stairway to heaven'!

Stairway leading to heaven!

When you go up this slight dim stairway, you reach a very bright and cosy shop!

*** the event ***

Erica and Indra, with Nicole (not pictured here), they were our hostesses for the night!

The ladies preparing to demo

Hmm... let me ask you a question: Where did you all glance at first? The ladies or the truffles? :-p

*** the cake ***

With the gloves on, they are ready for the show of the night.
The event was to show us how their 'Cake' is assembled and then tasting their award winning luscious cake!

Ganache piped unto the cake

Erica started by piping ganache on to 2 pieces of moist chocolaty cake.
No, they are not telling their recipe for the cake or the ganache!

Yeah, it looks like....

This photo above is for your interpretation. We know what you are thinking. Erica said that same thing.
So what do you see?

Spread it around. Heat it with the heat gun...

With nimble, delicate and yet strong hands, Erica uses the spatula and spreads the ganache over the cake.
Did you notice what looks like a Bosch drill? It's a Bosch heat gun! They use it to melt the ganache to a consistency that is easy to handle.

Stacked up and smoothen up...

We did realise that the 3 staff there are always smiling and happy!
They must love their work (and chocolates!) Happy people make delicious cake?

Ready for the glace!

Here, the cake is now covered in ganache and it looks so nice now!
The next step is to pour the chocolate glaze over it!

Chocolate Glace....

Look at the thick gooey melted chocolate that's covering the cake!
Do you feel like licking it? Oh.... it looks good!

Almost done, all covered up!

The decorated cake needs to be set in the fridge for a few hours before serving.
Look! The audience can't wait to try it!

Transfer it to the cake holder...

Here the cake's been transferred to a placeholder that we are all so familiar with.

All dolled up!

With a bit of decoration and bright lights, it looks good eh?

Having a slice of "The Truff's Chocolate Cake"

We were served the cake that has been set in the fridge. I tell you, the cake is absolutely stunning!
It's moist and the chocolate was so rich and yet not too sweet!

*** the truffles ***

The other reason why everyone attended the event. The chocolate truffles! They come in 3 varieties:
55% équateur dark chocolate, 66% antilles dark chocolate and 70% honduras dark chocolate.

Chocolate Truffles

The folks at Truffs were so nice to let us try all three!

Chocolate Truffle

I tell you, you will be back for more after trying it!
The 3 taste different as the cocoa beans comes from different regions.
I like all three! My favourite here is the 55% equator cocoa beans.

Boxes for the Truffles

It comes in boxes of 9 or 18. The prices for the truffles and the cake is available here.

Oh, a few days after the event, I am still thinking of the truffles and cakes!
If you are a chocolate fan, why not come and try it!

They sell only whole cakes and not slices of cakes. But if you are keen to try only a slice, head to the Farmers' market at Loewen Gardens. Every 1st and 3rd Saturday, they will be there! They sell cakes by the slice there.

Awfully Chocolate @ VivoCity

We were at VivoCity because Aunt wanted to get a birthday cake for her sister and herself. (both sister's birthday are close to each other). She said she has been ruminating of Awfully Chocolate cake for the last few days! Boy that must be awfully torturous!

When we got there, I thought I was in the wrong shop! The Awfully Chocolate outlets that I have been to are totally bare. It was always only 1 person attending the shop and they have nothing on display. Just a blank white shop!  You tell them what cake you want and they will get the cake for you from their storage area. You pay then leave.

Awfully Chocolate @ VivoCity

So I got a little surprised because this outlet at VivoCity had a seating area! (it's just a really small sitting place with only I think  just 2 tables).

They were also selling other mouthwatering treats for chocolate lovers!

Our cousin saw the Dark Chocolate Truffles and asked her mum if she could have some. The mum was in a really happy mood, so she obliged her daughter.

Awfully Chocolate

Our cousin proudly displaying her truffles.
Oh, the sticker on top says: "born in Singapore, made by hand".  How cute!

Awfully Chocolate

The hand cut truffles were sold by weight. It's SGD13 per 100g.

Here's a peep into the bag for you!

Looking into the Dark Chocolate Truffle Pack

After looking at it, we ate it immediately!

But our cousin thought of jie jie at home. She said, leave two of them for jie jie!
So I brought it back for sis who was happy to see chocolates!

This was the same dark chocolate truffle, photographed at home with nice lighting.
The cocoa powder is a little bitter when you put it in your mouth. (Which is the nice part!)
After that, let it slowly deliquesce on your warm tongue. Aaahh.....

Willie's Delectable Cacao

If you want to try Willie's Cacao after watching Willie's show on television (Discovery Travel & Living), you do not need to visit Selfridges, Waitrose or Harvey Nichols in UK anymore.

You can get them here in Singapore. Momo saw them at Jones the Grocer (Mandarin Gallery) after having lunch with another friend. She was so sweet and got me two box of chocolates. Each pack costs a whopping SGD11.50.

The Venezuelan 72 & Peruvian 70

Two little words nudging you to go ahead!

Tuck In

Momo was on leave and delivered the chocs to my office few days ago!
I took these 3 photos in the office. I thought it would be a waste to eat it in the office! So I brought them home.

Gold Wrapper

I waited till morning the next day before I opened it!

After 'fasting' for more than 8 hours (ie, I was sleeping), I woke up, brushed my teeth, drank some pure clean water and took a bite of it.

Guys and gals. It's awesome!

Willie's World-Class Cacao

Oh yes, in less than 1 month, I will be in UK/Europe.
I am hoping 'Eyjafjallajokull' behaves! Please stop sprouting ash!

My little shopping list has just grown longer today! The new additions:
- Willie's Cacao above at the RRP of £2.99 (and not £5.50 price in Singapore) for Momo & some friends.
- Momo has also placed order for Mariage Frères tea from Paris.
- A colleague, Dr IW came to my office and showed me what she said is cheap 'supermarket house brand' citrus green tea (the vert aromatise agrumes) from Monoprix.

My original shopping list only had 1 thing!
- The UK release of the 3G iPad. (Just because the plugs is the same one that fits into our sockets. haha)

For the 3G 64GB iPad, I was quoted SGD1900 (USD1352) at Lucky Plaza! These people are making a whopping SGD730 out of it!

oh boy... I am going to be so so broke!
