Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint @ Upper Paya Lebar Road

The wife and I finally got to try Kay Lee's $2 million recipe roast meat!
We were not too far from the area a few weeks ago and thought why not pop by to have an early dinner. We won't normally travel half the island just to try it.

It was around 5 pm and there was a few tables of customers there.
It's on a row of old shop houses and the surrounding area are mix of modern and old factories.

Their recipe and story and history of it, you can read it all in Leslie's post that he wrote in 2007.
A nice read.

We saw Ms Betty Kong there. Still working hard and chopping up the food we ordered. She looked a bit tired yet chirpy, she probably have been chopping since morning. Looking around the shop, you can see old articles about this place. Reading the articles on the walls, they believe only in preparing their roast the 'original Zhu Jiang style'.

We started by having a watercress pork soup. Their double boiled soup is delicious.
The wife whose mum is Cantonese 'poked poked' inside the bowl and saw that they used 'right' ingredients to prepare the soup. Quite a heart warming soup.

The Char Siu that everyone raves about. It's dark and they don't seem to add colouring to make it 'red'. It's darkish and slightly charred but does not have the bitter taste. It had the sticky gooey sauce residue that you find when you roast things at home. Delicious!

The meat is tender and had this sticky and chewy feel to it. The chewy is not that it's not tender, but the stickiness of the sauce needs you to chew your food properly. As you can see, some parts had the fatty meats that's really nice. The lean part is not 'siap siap' at all too.

While we were eating, it seems customers come in and ask if there are still the Char Siu, they leave when told it's sold out. (We must have gotten the last few bits!)

The roast pork was nice, but maybe it's already evening, the crispiness of the skin is not there anymore.

By the way, we ordered a '2 person to share' portion of 'everything'. The other side is the roast duck. The duck is good, but because I liked the char siu so much, my tongue and mind did not really keep into memory how the duck is like.

We remembered that the duck did not have the 'ducky gamey' taste. It was a very nice and 'pleasant to the palate' duck. It had a nice crispy skin and the ones we had was not really fat too.

Oh yes, the rice is covered with delicious 'lor'!
My plate had more 'sauce' than the wife's, so she passed it to me. Too dark for her, but hurray for me!

I will be back for their char siu and perhaps the duck. As I type this now, I have the urge to have the char siu again.

It costs the high $20s for the 2 person combi, soup and our drinks.

Tang Ji Shao La @ 7th Mile Coffee Shop

Just beside the 'Curry On' curry place, there's this Tang Ji Shao La stall. What caught my eye was the constantly long queue! Why is everyone queuing to buy it? Is it because the stall's new? I was thinking maybe it is the Channel U endorsement there.

So our family decided to try it as well! Those chicken, duck, meat hanging there seems to call out to us. Eat us! Eat us!

Tang Ji Shao la

We ordered a few things to share amongst the 5 of us.
The roast chicken. It's tender and quite ok.

Roast Chicken

The roast duck is nicer than the chicken for sure. Not too oily as well.

Roast Duck

My personal preference, I like the roast pork more than the BBQ pork.
Sis who don't like any hint of fats prefer the BBQ pork. LOL.

BBQ Pork and Roast Pork

Springy noodles. Mixed up with the sauce and meat, they are lovely.

Noodles

If noodles are not your thing, then have rice!

Rice

If rice is too dry, then eat it with soup. Their wontons are not too bad either.
Maybe we should have asked for more veggies in the soup. :-p..

Wanton Soup

I still don't know why the queue. The food's ok, not the best Shao La in Singapore, but it's better than most stalls. Maybe it's the brand new coffeeshop that's clean. The queue is still there since two weeks ago when we pass by this place.

Choo Chiang Roasted Meat Noodle House @ Toa Payoh

Today, sis and I had to run some errands at HDB Hub at Toa Payoh. When it was lunch time, I remembered a colleague 'pirate' who once brought us to this 'shao la tian' here. So we decided to pop by.

We ordered a bowl of wantan soup.

We find it quite nice and huge. Inside it is also filled with lots of ingredients ;-)

We ordered a triple combi mix. Roast Pork, Roast Duck and BBQ Pork. We were quite happy with it, especially the duck.

For those who lives on gravy, 'drink' on.

With the gravy above, this rice will gone in a blink of the eye. LOL
No, we ate only 1 plate, and we did not drink too much gravy.

The receipt, if you are interested to know the price.

Rong Liang @ Clementi West St 2

Saturdays have been so so busy the last few weeks. So many things to do, so little time. Sis was setting exam papers, I was preparing slides for next day's church service because I am scheduled to be on duty. We did not realise it was already past 7.30 pm. Momo came over earlier and was patient enough not to 'disturb' even though I think she's already hungry. haha..

Hunger gives people headache, and we had headache at around 7.30 pm. Sis said let's have a quick dinner and she wants some soup and roast meat. So Momo drove us to Clementi West St 2 for dinner.

We had two soups, one old cucumber soup and one sze chuan vegetable soup.

Then we said, a mix of roast meats for 3 persons.

We found the duck very nice tonight. At least they have not skimp on the seasoning and stuff.

Just the other day, colleagues and I went to ABC Market and the famous 'shao la' stall that's near the POSB ATM. Oh, 6 mouths the other confirmed that it did not taste good.

The famous Tiong Bahru Roasted Pig seems to have fallen out of favour too. The queue's gone and last month or so, we gave it the 3rd chance, and confirmed it has fallen out of favour. Wonder what's happening to all of them??

At least this stall's still ok. Let's hope rising cost wont ruin all the nice makan places around.

Rong Liang @ Clementi West St 2

Today the 6 of us squeezed into the car and drove to Clementi West St 2. We wanted some Roast Meat so we thought of this place. Good thing that we arrived just before peak hours.

The Sambal Kangkong.

Platter of Roast Pork and Crispy Pork. (Cha Shao and Shao Rou)

The plate of quack quack with very crispy skin.

5 plates of rice with lots of gravy :-)

One colleague had noodles.
We also had 2 other soups. Salted Veg and Duck Soup & Watercress Soup.

When we left the place, there was almost no seating space. While we ate, people were streaming in. Yes, we enjoyed our meat. haha..

Do you like your rice filled with gravy? I know some people do, but some people don't.

Fatty Cheong @ ABC Market

It's been some time since colleagues and I went to ABC, so off we went to eat one colleague's favourite "shao la" stall.

Since I have taken photos before, so only took 2 this time.

The yummylicious Roast Duck.

And the equally delicious Roast Pork mix.

We had the "shui jiao" soup etc, but I did not take any photos of it. I wonder why?....

But another colleague bought us some Popiah to eat while we waited for other colleagues to arrive.

I love Roast Meats, do you?

Zhu Jiang Roast Meat @ Toa Payoh

Remember I told you yesterday that colleague got craving for Shao La. He crave for meat from this store lor...

So, we came all the way here to makan our lunch. It's at the ground floor of the Car Park building just beside HDB Hub.

Here's the 'Shao Rou' and 'Cha Shao' (Roast Pork).

And the duck fans (which are my colleagues) sure order duck when there's a chance. Duck very fat fat though. They love the fat. (yikes!)

This is the Kiam Chai soup. (Salted veg soup).
I like this soup, but it's a bit on the peppery side.

We also ordered two veg sides. This is the 'tao geh' / bean-sprouts.
If you have sharp eyes, yes, those are fried lard. (yikes again.. but again, they do not have trans fat though...)

Let me ask you all a question, would you all eat the lard?
For me, I avoid it if possible. But I will take one piece sometimes. :-O

By the way, these 3 (out of 6) colleagues of mine who we usually go out for lunch, they love chicken skin, pork lard etc, and guess what! Their cholesterol levels are low! Sigh... unfair isn't it? (yes, we take yearly blood test)

Rong Liang: Shao La

This shop is located behind the Clementi West St 2 market. It used to be located in a coffeeshop just beside the market. It grew popular and now occupies 2 shop lots.

If you like food covered with lots of sauce, maybe this is a place for you. But it's a tad salty, you can guess from the pictures. :-p

The rice that's covered with soy gravy.

This is a fav soup. Szechuan veg soup. I like szechuan veg since young, so anything with it makes me happy :-)

This is the roast chicken wings.

The quack quack animal, duckie!

The "cha shao" and "shao rou". Roast pork and crispy skin pork.

We ordered a tofu dish as well.

OK, we are not gluttons. We had 6 people sharing the food above. You get quite full. We had another soup too, water crest soup.

ABC Market: Fatty Cheong

You know I have been itching and chinese believe you should not be eating things that is considered 'tok' (in hokkien). Which can be loosely translated as poisonous. But but but.. colleagues decided let's go have Duck at ABC Market today!

Of course I was tempted. So off I go...

Here's ABC Market. (See this other blog to know why it's ABC)

Then here it is. Fatty Cheong. Colleagues discovered it by reading another food blog. Realised that the ducky here taste better than Tiong Bahru's!

There were 4 of us. Ordered half a duck.

And also Roast Pork and Crispy Pork.

More pix of the pork.

Guess what, I only ate the pork and veg. I was so disciplined that I did not touch the duck! And also the wonton soup (which had prawns another 'tok' food to avoid).

My rashes are 90% gone. I am on the road to recovery and back to normal makan soon I hope.
