Fried Kway Teow @ Amoy Street Food Centre

I had cravings for Char Kway Teow last week. I don't know why, but CKT is something that I love to eat since I was a little boy! Every now and then, I feel like eating it, although I was told it has the calories of eating 12 loaves of bread! (is that true?)

There are many styles of Char Kway Teow and everyone has their own favourite. There's no one stall in Singapore that can please everyone. Not even the best Char Kway Teow stall in Singapore can please everyone.  I have always prefer the slightly wet version (but not soggy). Some like the dry version and think the wet version is disgusting.

Fried Kway Teow @ Amoy Street Food Centre

This and the Fried Kway Teow stall at Tiong Bahru Market are my favourite stalls. Though this stall does not serve the nicest version I have eaten, I have grown to like it. I have eaten at this stall for more than 10 years!

The funny thing is that the uncle that cooks it is not even consistent! It's sometimes wetter than usual, sometimes it is dry. There used to be 2 uncles who took turns to fry it and they have different styles too! Nowadays I only see 1 old man frying it.

I had the Char Kuey Teow last Saturday. Sis was ordering and she since she had to wait, she had a chat with the lady at the stall. She said that uncle who is frying has been frying for over 40 years!

We were told, the uncle was frying kway teow down the street. When Amoy Street Food Centre opened, they moved here and has been here frying his kway teow here ever since.  Quite a veteran eh! 40 years and people are still going for his CKT!

Kway Teow Mee

Fried Kuey Teow Mee

The default version of Char Kway Teow. It is actually Kway Teow Mee. It is mixture of flat rice noodles with yellow noodles.

I don't like yellow noodles so I 'dislike' this version. Sis ate the above and says it is too wet for her liking. She likes her drier version. But I know many people love this version, that's why there is always a queue for it!

Fried Kway Teow

Fried Kway Teow

This is my favourite. Only Kway Teow and not adulterated with yucky yellow noodles. (You can tell I really hate yellow noodles in my Kway Teow) To order it, say "Heng Kway Teow". You can say Heng Kway Teow to all fried kway teow hawkers. How many of you are like me? You only order Heng Kway Teow.

Sometimes you have to wait a while before they cook this for you. They have to finish serving the 'horrible' mix first before they serve me my 'delicious' kway teow.

I like the wetter version because the kway teow is softer and not so oily. I don't like the drier version, because it gives an oily aftertaste.  I also like to squeeze the calamansi over it so that it gives a slight citrusy taste and fragrance to it. Oh, I am salivating now.

Rong Teochew Fish Porridge @ Amoy Street Food Centre

This was lunch with some BSF friends at Amoy Street Food Centre last Saturday.

Dino and Momo wanted to eat the Raw Fish Porridge at the Food Centre, so all of us decided to just sit in front of the stall itself.

Rong Teochew Fish Porridge at Amoy Street Food Centre

They ordered a two person portion of the raw fish porridge. $6.
Fish porridge that has so much greens on top is quite unusual eh?

Two Persons portion of Raw Fish

They had a bowl of the plain porridge each.
Hmm... How can plain porridge look delicious? By adding some chopped parsley and fried onions on top. haha..

Porridge with little bit of toppings

I ate Curry Rice, but after finishing my rice, I saw Dino and Momo were still slowly enjoying their raw fish. Staring at their plate of fish made me hungry. (What a glutton! I hear some of you say)

Guess what? I ordered a single portion of the same raw fish. $3
I was tempted by it. (Excuse was the Curry Rice was not substantial)

Single Person portion of Raw Fish

I also had the plain porridge as well. Dino and Momo ate the raw fish and the porridge separately. For me, I mix the fish and veg with the lime. Gave it a good stir and then I stirred the mix into my hot porridge. That gentle heat on the porridge made the mix smell really good! hehe...

Our friend Gorilla was with us too. He was also eating Curry Rice. He was also hungry after his curry rice and when he saw me ordering the fish, he too was tempted.

He ordered a single portion too, but without porridge. He and MrMFA picked on the raw fish. Everyone was happy. ;-p

How do you eat your raw fish? You mix them like me? Or you eat them separately like Dino and Momo?

Tai Seng Noodle House @ Amoy Street Food Centre

This was lunch last Saturday afternoon with some friends at Amoy Street Food Centre.
Wondering what to eat, we saw this plate of noodles on a friend's table. Looked really tempting ya?

Char Siu & Wonton Noodles

So I decided to have this noodle. I went to look for the stall and realise that Momo was also queuing for food from this stall.

Tai Seng Noodle House

So my order was added to Momo's order and here's what we had.

Momo had the pork ribs noodles.

Pork Rib Noodles

I had the char siu noodles. The fried wantons (very nice) are standard in all the orders. You choose the other meat, char siu, pork rib, or whatever you fancy.

Char Siu & Wonton Noodles

Oh ya, the wanton soup is also standard. Quite delicious. There's quite a lot of wantons inside too!

Wanton Soup

You got to have patience when you order food from this stall. There's always a queue. (even on a Saturday afternoon). It's a one-woman operation. One auntie handles everything.

Tanglin Eng Kee Bak Kut Teh @ Amoy Street Food Centre

This was lunch last Saturday with a group of friends after our Bible Study. We were famished and the famous food stalls at Amoy Street Food Centre had queues that were so so long.

Then someone bought back to our table, a bowl of Bak Kut Teh. She came back so quickly and we were surprised. We asked her where is the stall? And before you knew it, all of us went to queue at that stall. LOL...

Tanglin Eng Kee Bak Kut Teh

The BKT, how shall I describe it?
Only the soup is nice. It's the peppery type and it is quite tasty and fragrant.
However, the meat's not so 'ru wei'. (is it because it's Saturday?)

Peppery Bak Kut Teh

The 'lor' on the rice is not the thick kind that I like.
As it was a Saturday, so the lady only sells limited stuff. (I asked if she had the 'kiam chai')

The rice with the 'lor'

The early birds who ate first. We later occupied 3 tables and everyone on the 3 tables except for 2 did not eat Bak Kut Teh. You can see someone opted for Char Kuey Teow instead.

All of us ate Bak Kut Teh

Hmmm.. Come if you want to drink soup only. LOL...

Jin De Yun HK Food @ Amoy Street Food Centre

We called it 'doggie bowl' place. Why? Long long time ago (8 or 9 years ago), they used stainless steel bowls to serve the steamed rice dishes.

A few of us friends have been eating at this stall for nearly 10 years! Amazing huh...
(oh yes, we have seen the prices gone up too. LOL)

The "Mei Cai Kou Rou". I used to eat this almost every time I am here. But recently I eat the healthier chicken dishes.

If you want the same dish, but using Chicken.. Here it is...
Mei Cai Kou Ji Rou. (is that how's it is called? haha..)

This is what I have been eating recently. (without the salted egg yolk)

Mei Cai Kuo Rou @ Amoy Street Food Centre

This is one of the fastest meal you can have ready on your table in 2 mins (if there is no queue) - Mei Cai Kou Rou. This is one of the stalls that i frequent every Tuesday /Thursday for the last few years.

I used to eat the mei cai with chicken. But ever since Keropok Man tried this (long time ago and always), and he seems to like it, have always ordered the mei cai with kou rou since. The auntie will also add some vegetables on top, hence making it a wholesome meal ;-)

Here's a closer view of the pork hidden below the vegetables.

I am getting hungry all over again :P

Thunder Tea Rice @ Amoy Street Food Centre

I saw this stall last week while I ate at Amoy Street Food Centre. Over the weekend, I saw an article appeared in the newspaper. While walking to the food centre for dinner, I headed straight to it.

Some people says it is an acquired taste, but is it really so?
Anyone who like veggies will like it. I had it from the same franchise few months ago at VivoCity branch too.

If you want to know how much and what they have, just look here.

I had the brown rice version. Since I am eating healthy, might as well eat healthier right?

The green stuff for its name sake. The "lei cha".

I am not sure if there's a proper way to eat it. I just stir everything up!

I like it. Maybe I like all the ingredients in the rice.

Fried Kway Teow @ Amoy Street Food Centre

After posting yesterday's post. I had the cravings for Fried Kway Teow! (Don't laugh!)

So, for tonight's dinner, I went to Amoy Street Food Centre and had Fried Kway Teow at the corner store. It also happens to be Stall 01-01! The stall does not have any fanciful time, but just the name of what it sells.

I was really hungry, so I opted for the $3 version.
Yummy. It had around 16 cockles in it.

Where is your favourite Fried Kway Teow stall?

Wantan Noodles @ Amoy Street Food Centre

This stall is a stall I frequently eat on Tuesdays / Thursdays for the last few years. Friends and I eat here because we all attend the same Bible study that is hosted at the church right opposite. We seems to be always rushing and this is one of the 'fast food' available.

This is what I usually have. (No, it's not on the menu on the board.) It's Wanton Hor Fun. Yes, I like anything kuey teow or hor fun. (or even phở haha).

The uncle is quite generous with the meat, mushroom and veg. I always put on lots of chilli on it. Yum Yum... Very satisfying as it leaves a spicy taste and feeling on your lips. LOL.

It comes with 5 wantons in the soup. Depends on the uncle's mood, sometimes the wanton's over the noodles and the soup has nothing in it.

Don't you think 'fast food' like these taste better than the 'col sanders' or 'golden arches' fast food? hehe..

It's at Stall 01-31, Amoy Street Food Centre.

Da Cheng Hainan Chicken Rice @ Amoy Street Food Centre.

A few of us friend order chicken rice from this stall although you know for sure it will take a long time for the food to come. haha..

It's just that this old couple managing the stall, just happen to be slow. Their 'shou jiao man'. (translated as 'Hand Leg Slow' LOL) But somehow, we still get chicken rice from him because we want to 'support support' this old couple who is still in business.

One thing unique about this chicken rice is that it comes with peanuts! The chicken rice is nice too.

But when we are in a rush, we will avoid them, and go for the other chicken stall opposite them. That stall has super fast service by a younger couple and their chicken rice is quite nice too.
