Breakfast at Jones The Grocer @ Dempsey

I usually wake up rather late on Saturday mornings (or sometimes afternoon). It's the only day in the week that I can laze in bed. (I am fortunate that the wife still allows me to continue this even after marriage!) The 2 ladies at home will wake up early and do so many things, they will go to the gym, go for a hike at Bukit Timah (hill), etc...

Two Saturdays ago, they went out and ran some errands and when they were done, they decided to have breakfast. A "pretend we are overseas holidaying" breakfast. We have done a few trips together and we always missed them. They picked Jones, to feel like they are in Australia. The branch at Dempsey makes it feel like it's somewhere out there in another country.

They decided to call me, which I am glad they did. They called my phone, "Lazy bum bum, wake up, wake up, wake up! We are going for breakfast, we will be home in 10 minutes to pick you up. Bye!"

Huh? I was still half asleep, but I think I heard what they said. I woke up, showered and before I knew it, they were already home.

"Still not ready ah? Why do we always have to wait for you? Can't you wake up earlier on Saturdays... Always wasting time away, see how much we have already accomplished today...." The way to deal with it is say OK and it will be over!

They placed what they brought back immediately (they hate it when I always leave things on the table) into the 'proper' places at home and when they were done, I was too!

Jones The Grocer @ Dempsey
Eggs on toast ($8.50) + Jones sausages as sides ($3)
For this set you can choose to have your eggs poached, fried or scrambled. It comes with sourdough toast. The poached eggs delighted KopiKosongGirl. She loves runny egg yolks.

The eggs has a slight vinegar-ish taste, so we guess they used the vinegar boiling water to make this.
Is it only my eyes, do you see it's shaped in a heart shape?

Jones The Grocer @ Dempsey
The Spanish eggs 'en cocotte' ($19.50)

Baked baby spinach, jones tomato relish, bacon and sourdough toast. I liked it because it's tomato based. Buried below the bacon and tomato relish are two eggs which had runny yolks.

I know it's not that difficult to make at home, but we just want to be served sometimes. Slightly salty, but the spinach was slightly bitter, so overall it was OK for me.

Jones the Grocer @ Dempsey
This was how I ate it. You can't hear it, but you can imagine the crunchiness of the toast can you?
Just so lovely eating it.

Jones The Grocer @ Dempsey
Breakfast BLT ($13.50)
Grilled bacon, avocado, roasted tomato and watercress with aioli between toasted focaccia bread.
It's sis' kind of food. She loves toasted artisan bread and avocado!
She likes it with her white flat.

Jones The Grocer @ Dempsey
KopiKosongGirl and sis both had Flat Whites.

Jones The Grocer @ Dempsey
I had celery with green apple!
(See my magical straw!)

Nice place to spend an hour or so having a nice quiet breakfast.
Around noon, the place gets a bit warm and sticky if you sit outside like we did.

There's free wifi too for those who don't want to use their 'precious data' connection now in Singapore.

Jumbo Seafood @ Dempsey

KopiKosongGirl and I have dinner with my in-laws (KKG's parents) once a week.

It's quite an interesting way of making appointments. The mother and daughter will SMS each other and the the FIL and me will be on the sideline, just reading their messages quietly. This is thanks to iMessage and also Whatsapp with their group chats.

KKG wanted to have a Japanese meal, but somehow through the conversation, MIL suggested Jumbo Seafood because she is a Jumbo card holder and they mailed her a free Yu Sheng voucher. So another freebie decided where we are going to eat. (Doesn't it happen to you all too?)

It's the 10th day of the CNY and we can't remember how many Yu Sheng we have had!

Jumbo Seafood Dempsey
The Yu Sheng here is the more common Yu Sheng. No fancy stuff, the usual ones.
The menu list it at $38++ for this small one. There were additional options, but we did not have that.

Jumbo Seafood Dempsey
The tofu dish we ordered was The Japanese Beancurd Treasure Bags.
Tofu pockets with shredded black fungus, bamboo shoots, mushroom and goji berry. Quite an interesting dish.

Jumbo Seafood Dempsey
We also had an almost 1kg Garoupa that was steamed HK Style.

The initial order was to be with Garlic, but somehow when it was served, it was HK Style instead. The person who took the order noticed it and asked if we still wanted it, we said we will take it. The fish was fresh and delicious.

Jumbo Seafood Dempsey
Kailan with Garlic. The 2nd vegetables for the night after the Yu Sheng.

It was a nice dinner with the in-laws. The place was packed as usual.

Jumbo @ Dempsey Hill

It was Momo's mum's birthday and we had a celebration at Jumbo at Dempsey.

Momo chosed to bring her mum to Jumbo because the mum has been talking about crabs.
Satisfy the mum's cravings and you will have a peace at home. (That's a cheeky statement by me!) It was a great dinner with Momo and her parents.

Remember to book if you are planning to come here. The Dempsey area is getting more and more popular. We could not get a seat in the main air con area and got seated at the 'verandah' area of the old colonial house.

Here's what we ate.

*** Sambal Kangkong ***

Sambal Kangkong

Of all the choices of vegetables, we still like sambal kangkong. Why do people like sambal kankong so much? I have no idea. But we simply adore it.

*** Deep Fried Red Tilapia with Nonya Style ***

Nonya style Deep Fried Fish

It was a choice of either steam or deep fried. In the end, deep fried was chosen because deep frying is something most of us don't do at home. Most of us steam fish at home to avoid too much cleaning up!

Also if you choose the deep fried version, we get to see the 'standing' fish! It was so crispy you can practically bite the whole fish! The nonya sauce was great with it too.

*** Slow Bake Chrysanthemum Pork Ribs in reduction of Jin Hua Ham ***

Individual Pork Ribs

The name of the dish: Slow Bake Chrysanthemum Pork Ribs in reduction of Jin Hua Ham is such a mouthful! The ribs were served in individual portions. The ribs were big and tasty and really fragrant. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.

But somehow I did not really enjoy eating it as I should. I think there is something that do not agree with my taste buds. I think it's something in the sauce, because I like pork ribs.

*** Jumbo's Chilli Crabs ***

Jumbo's Chilli Crab

When we ordered this dish, they asked if we would like the Australian version of crabs or something. Can't really remember, but we said we would have the usual Sri Lankan crabs.

The dish to please the mum. Spicy and sweetish sauce really whets your appetite. How many of you love soaking up the sauce with the deep fried man tou? Crabs and Carbs seems to go hand in hand eh?

*** Avocado Pudding ***

Avocado Pudding

We were not going to eat desserts because we were already so full. Somehow when the serving staff said, you want to try a new dessert, avocado pudding, momo's eyes lit! Glutton girl.

*** Orh Nee ***

Yam Paste Dessert

This was ordered for her mum. Her mum loves Orh Nee.

Happy Birthday Aunty!

Jumbo @ Dempsey

We came to Jumbo for dinner because our aunt who is a Jumbo Rewards card member was tempted by their Bamboo Clams offer. I think it was some half price offer. Sounds good eh? The Jumbo that's not far away in the east would be the branch at Dempsey Hill.

***

Dinner started with the Crispy Baby Squid.  Baby squid always taste so good doesn't it?
We all love the crunchiness when you bite it, and the sauce overs it makes it taste even more delicious. Lovely with freshly cooked fluffy fragrant rice.

(yes, it's sinful and high in calories)

Crispy Baby Squid

***

If Crispy Baby Squid is too sinful, this next dish is for those who are determined not to fall into temptation.

This was their homemade seaweed tofu topped with enoki and shimeji mushrooms. I think there were shitake slices in it as well. I like the outer crispy layer that wraps the soft silken tofu inside.

Another dish that makes you eat lots of rice. Lovely gravy for the rice!

Tofu with Mushrooms

***

Aha! The reason we were here, to have the XL sized Bamboo Clams. Bamboo Clams always go well with loads of garlic! Each of us had one and we absolutely adore it.

Bamboo Clam with Minced Garlic

***

We also had black pepper sliced beef. The beef was so thinly sliced and grilled, they taste wonderful, so tender! The black pepper sauce came in a separate sauce bowl. It taste nice without the sauce!

But if you want some black pepper heat, dip the beef into it. I love the black pepper sauce.

Sliced Beef

***

The final main dish was the steamed cod fish. Don't you love the flaky flesh of cod fish?
Put them in your mouth and it melts and disintegrates.

Cod Fish

As usual, we will share a few desserts here and then we are off to have more desserts at the ice cream shop opposite. (you know which ice cream chain right? hehe)

This place is usually crowded, so if you are coming, make a reservation.

Jumbo Seafood @ Dempsey Hill

This was dinner at Jumbo Seafood. One of the many Chinese New Year meals.
Everyone in the family must have put on lots of weight!

This is Jumbo's version of Yusheng.

Prosperity Yusheng (Salmon)

The fun part of Yusheng must be the tossing!
Come to think of it, if we did not have the 'bowls of oils and sauces' and crackers, it would have been very healthy. But would it be nice without them?

We want the 'smooth sailing year' (soon soon li li, i.e. bowl of oil) and 'sweet and happy' (tian tian mi mi, i.e, bowl of sweet plum sauce) and 'golden nuggets all over' (huang jin man tang, i.e, crispy crackers).   LOL

Prosperity Yusheng (Salmon)

We had asparagus stir fried with garlic.
It was quite nice. Light and crunchy.

Asparagus stir fried with garlic

This is the Salted Egg Golden Prawns.
Seafood cooked with salted eggs all taste good right?

Salted Egg Golden Prawns

The scalloped in mini yam rings.
Fluffy crispy outer layer, a layer of yam and a scallop centre. Ooo... indulgence for yam lovers.

Scallop wrapped in Yam Ring

We had their seaweed tofu before and we liked it and we ordered it again.
This time it looked a bit different. We still like it though ;-)

Mushrooms Tofu with Broccoli

A steamed fish because everyone loves fish in our family.
Also it bears a nice name! Nian nian you yu. :-)

Fish steamed Hong Kong Style

We saw on the menu some specials, and we ordered them.
This is the Prosperity Chicken that's stuffed with goodies like conpoy, winter mushroom and bamboo shoots. It was good!

But we noticed it's cooked and served in an aluminum pot. Would we get Alzheimer's?
Never mind, we don't eat this all the time.

Prosperity Chicken stuffed with Conpoy, winter mushroom and bamboo shoots

The other special was the deep fried pork knuckles.
Not too bad too! Certain parts that are thinner is a bit dry, but the other parts were nicely done. We know it's a big knuckle, so it's expected.

Deep Fried Pork Knuckles

Wishing all of you a very Blessed, Happy and Prosperous Lunar New Year!

Oosh @ Dempsey

Momo and I joined Camemberu and HungryCow for an invited dinner at Oosh, Dempsey. You most probably have seen this super pink that screams out to you when you enter into Dempsey on the right.

(This photo of the sign was taken way back in early in October. Hmm, did I foretell I would be here in a few weeks?)

oosh @ dempsey

Behind this Oosh sign is the largest al-fresco restaurant and bar at the Dempsey area. The people behind Oosh have transformed the area by filling it lush greenery and even created a waterfall feature. Did you know that this place is also mentioned in the New York Times? (read the NYT article here)

What surprise me even more is that there's a chef here who has undergone training by 2 Michelin Starred Chefs. Head Chef Zulkarnaini Dahlan trained under Eric Guilbert from La Tour d' Argent and Gilles Marx from Taillevent, Paris.

So what did we feast on here? We started with a selection of rolls.

Bread Rolls

We had it with their homemade butter. It's a mix of herbs and garlic. You can tell if it's good from the photo.

Garlic Butter

What I like about this food tasting by Oosh is that everything's from the menu itself and not some specially prepared dishes that you as a reader won't get to eat if you go there.

You can order it ala carte or from the specially designed set menus. They also have set lunches available. Check their sets here.

This is the mushroom soup.

Mushroom Soup

If you are prefer something with no cream, you can try their Vegetable Consome. It has a very "mum's soup" taste to it.

Vegetable Consomme

This is the Portobello Salad. Grilled Portobello with Arugula (Rockets) and balsamic dressing. The lettucy spicy tasting arugula goes well with porto!

Portobello Salad

This is the Foie Gras Ballotine. Everyone on the table likes it except me. (I think it's my tongue, I can never appreciate Foie Gras and it has something to do with Qantas Flight QF10 16 years ago! haha)

The Foie Gras Ballotine

This is Seared Frog Legs. Ooo... You got to try this! Awesome! Well marinated and cook just perfectly. Maybe after trying it, you might start to like it. We heard that the big big boss here eats it almost daily!

Seared Frog Legs

For the mains, we shared the following:

Lamb Navarin. (or Lamb Stew if you prefer to call it in simple English). You know this chef experiments with molecular gastronomy because he cooked this dish for 36 hours at 61 degrees Celsius.  I like the lamb, it has totally soaked up the flavours of the marinates in the super long cooking process. I guess another reason I like it is because of the tomato base, which I love!

Lamb Navarin

This is Tenderloin Rossini. Grilled Tenderloin topped with Seared Foie Gras served with Celery Puree and Bordelaise sauce with Sliced Truffle. Does your jaw dropped with that description?

Maybe Foie Gras seared and eaten with grilled meat is delicious is the way that will make me like Foie Gras. haha. I definitely like the tenderloin. I happen to like celery so the celery puree is something I enjoyed! (I know many of you dislike celery. hehe)

Tenderloin Rossini

Next is Grilled Salmon. Grilled Norwegian Salmon with Pommes Sarlandaise, Apple Compote and Dill Cream Sauce.

Salmon was nice. I think I like the Apple Compote. (The apple sliced thinly, stacked together where the Salmon is 'resting')

Grilled Salmon

Pacific Dory. Pan-Fried Herbs and Chilli marinated Pacific Dory with Sautèed Vegetables and Tomato Butter Sauce. How unique to see dory rolled up!

Pacific Dory

Next thing we shared was Tagliatelle with Fresh Tiger Prawns rapidly sautèed with Garlic, Chillies and Anchovies topped with Parmigiano. Sorry, I can't remember the taste now. (you most probably know I have selective memory and I seem to remember taste of meat better!)

Tagliatelle

Duck Confit. I think it was really lovely. It's tender and cooked till you can gently removed it from the bones. One more reason I like it because of the caramelized onions! I just love the taste and smell of caramelized onions!

The Duck Confit

Now for desserts.

Chocolate Gateau. I taste a bit of nutella inside! Chocolate and Ice Cream, who can refuse it?

Chocolate Gateaux

This is one of their signature dessert. Lemongrass Panna Cotta.
Their official description: A dessert with an Asian twist; Lemongrass scented Panna Cotta with drizzles of fresh Rock Melon Puree and Raspberry Coulis served with Japanese Black Sesame Ice Cream.
My description: It's something you should try. Black Sesame Ice Cream is always delicious. The tofu textured Panna Cotta taste so 'lemongrassyly' unique!

Lemongrass Panna Cotta

Another of the signature dessert: Coffee Melt.
The little glass contains Kahlua Crème Anglaise. You have a scoop of cold delicious vanilla ice cream. There's a warm coffee cake that flows out a 'kopi si bei gao'. Eat all the 3 together and .......... (fill in the blanks yourself hehe...)

Coffee Melt

Strawberry Souffle. Light, fluffy, pink and sweet. The ladies like it, but not me. It's a ladies dessert!

Strawberry Souffle

Oh, there was the cheese platter too. We had Brilliant Savarin. The cheese person you can see are HungryCow and Camemberu. I was totally overwhelmed when I had a bite of it. Thanks but really no thanks, I am fine without it. I am unable to appreciate it. But Camemberu love it so much she is considering changing the name of her blog! LOL..

It was a very enjoyable dinner at Oosh. The ambience is nice too. Of course, it was always nice to have dinner with Momo, Camemberu and HungryCow.

A big thanks to Sharon and Indri from Oosh for graciously hosting us. You were such wonderful hosts.
