West Co'z Cafe @ West Coast Plaza

We heard that there is a very popular halal 'zhi char' at West Coast Plaza. My colleagues wanted to try it out, so the 6 of us went there a few weeks ago.

When we got there, true to the hearsay, the place was really packed! You might need to wait a while for seats. We just happened to be there at the right time, because a big group left and the 6 of us took over the table. (allocated by the service staff)

West Co'z Cafe

We did not know what was the 'must have' here. We flipped through the menu and finally decided on the set menu for 4-6 person that cost $68.80. It seemed like a good choice. It allowed us to choose a dish from 5 different categories and drinks were included.

* Claypot Golden Chicken *

Claypot Golden Chicken

From the meat category, we picked the Claypot Golden Chicken. It is a bit like 'san bei chicken'. Anything that has a crispy outer skin with slightly sweetish and salty sauce taste good.

* Curry Fish Head *

Curry Fish Head

From the fish category, we picked the Curry Fish Head. We picked this because we noticed almost every table ordered it!

The fish was very very spicy! The sauce is nice, spicy and makes you sniff when you eat it. It also had the ability to made a few of us crave it that we nearly soaked up every drop of curry!

There is something different or lacking about it. It's not that was not nice, it was quite good. We concluded that we are bias because we are more more used to the Indian Fish Head curry.

* Sambal Kangkong *

Sambal Kang Kong

From the vegetable category, we picked the sambal kangkong, which was excellent. A tad salty like most Malay dishes. We wished the portion is bigger though.

* Oats Sotong *

Oats Sotong

For the seafood category, we picked the Oats Sotong. The reason we picked sotong over prawns was probably everyone was lazy to peel prawns!

It was quite fragrant and spicy. You can see bits of the fiery cili padi in it. Few colleagues were seen nibbling the fried oats until it was almost empty!

* Oyster Omelette *

Oyster Omelette

There was a 'main category' in the menu which had 'Hotplate Beancurd', Salad You Tiao, Mango Salad and 'Oyster Omelette'. We wondered why it was called main.

We picked the oyster omelette which was something totally different from what we expected. We thought it will be something like the Chinese style oyster omellete. But it was totally different. It is more like scrambled eggs with oyster with lots of chilli!

You might just grow to like this!

* Rice oh rice *

Steamed Rice

The rice was pretty decent rice too. You might need more of it if you intend to pour the curry from the fish head over it.

The drinks that most of us had was lime juice.

One of the places that you can go with your Muslim colleagues.

Fish Mart Sakuraya @ West Coast Plaza

This was dinner about 2 weeks ago. We have not been to West Coast Plaza for the longest time so I told sis let's meet there for dinner. Walking round this 'kinda quiet' mall, I noticed Sakuraya is back!

Sakuraya used to be on the second floor near McDonalds at the old "Ginza Plaza". It is now located on the first floor of the new "West Coast Plaza" where OCBC bank used to be.

This will sound silly to you. After we placed our order, this little plate of appetizer came. We wondered if it's some complimentary stuff because we did not order it. Since it's in front of us, and we thought it was complimentary, we ate it. We ordered seaweed and was waiting for it to be served.

Suddenly we noticed the little chit on the side of the table. As our orders came, the items were ticked off. We were given the wrong order!

There was nothing we can do. We already finished it! LOL...

Appetizer Side Dish

We ordered green soba $8.50.

While eating this, guess what I was thinking about? I was thinking of the Cold Soba on Singapore Airlines! I always remember the SQ version served on the SIN-NRT leg. Am I the only person who thinks airline food is better?

Cold Green Tea Soba

We would have preferred a little bit more wasabi. We were too lazy to ask for more. There were a lot of people dining that night and the servers all looked busy, so we did not bother them.

Cold Green Tea Soba

We also had the Unagi and Avocado rolls. $12 It was OK lah.

But we realise something. Everything we order seems to be cold!
As we ate, we are feeling colder and colder! It was not a nice feeling. We should have ordered hot food!

Unagi and Avocado

We also had 3 kinds of sashimi. Salmon $10, Maguro $9 and Mekajiki $9.50.

The sashimi was picked from the refrigerated display at the 'fish market' side. The fish were all cut and packed in chunks, weighted and priced. You pick what you want to eat from the selection of seafood and pass it to the 'fish guy'. He will then slice it for you and someone will serve it to your table.

Sashimi

The food was OK, but we left feeling cold, even after having hot tea.You noticed everything we ordered were cold stuff? Total bill was around $56 for all of the above.

So if you come here, remember to order hot food!

Dian Xiao Er @ West Coast Plaza

We have one colleague who likes to ask us to go have lunch at West Coast Plaza. So after some persuasion, we were all convinced to go there for lunch.

So, here we are at Dian Xiao Er. We realised something, if you come here before 12 noon, you get some discount off too. (Any discount is good at this kind of economy. )

Dian Xiao Er

We had 7 of us, so we opted for the set meal. Depending on the number of people, the number of dishes increases. Quite interesting.

Here's our set meal:
Their legendary Herbal Roast Duck. A bit sweet but we love it.

Herbal Roast Duck

The Braised Mushroom in Chinese Wine. This is quite delicious.

Stir Fried Lotus Roots with Macadamia Nuts. This vegetable dish is quite nice.

Old Style Steam Fish Slice. I like this because of the 'sze chuan' vegetable strips on it.

For dessert, Gui Ling Gao.

Emperor Q @ West Coast Plaza

Last week, we had a visit from an ex-colleague who is now working with this famous search engine and webmail company based in Sunnyvale, California. It's good to see her again and we met up for lunch.

We went to a nearby mall to have lunch. We looked around the mall and decided it was either Emperor Q or Dian Xiao Er. We thought we should try Emperor Q as they said they have a 25% opening special. LOL...

Emperor Q @ West Coast Plaza

Some of the things we ordered to share:
Chicken Wings.

Fried Chicken Wings

Asam Chicken.
This dish looks simple but the taste's really not bad. If you like Asam based dishes, you might like it. It's sour enough :-)

Asam Chicken

These are the individual dishes that we ordered:
One colleague had the Cod Fish Porridge. The egg on top makes it looks good eh?

Eel Porridge

The cod fish noodles. The noodles comes with a halve egg that has those soft yokes (tamago) Yummm.

Cod Fish Noodles

Cod Fish Noodles

This is the Mince Pork Sauce noodles.

I had the Char Siew and Roast Chicken noodles combo.
So so lah. I think I can eat lots of tamago. LOL

Thai Express @ West Coast Plaza

From yesterday's post, you can guess that we went to West Coast Plaza for lunch. We were wondering where to go, and somehow someone said Thai Express, and all of us just nodded and walked towards the shop. LOL...

The complimentary papaya salad when you tell them you are paying by a DBS card. We asked if we could swap it for something else, the answer is no. :-P

Papaya Salad

Here's what the whole group of us ate:
"Puk" had the basil chicken. It arrived first and everyone just looked at it salivating. Looks good right?

Basil Chicken

"Almond Jelly" had the seafood Phad Thai. Looks delicious too ya?

Seafood Phad Thai

"Pirate" had the green curry with rice. He did not finish his curry, but the rest of us finished it up. hehe...

Green Curry

This is what I ate. The Honey Chicken. Quite nicely done!

Chicken

The Crispy Drumlettes with Lemon Sauce that we shared.

Drummets

"Ms Healthy" had the Omelette with rice.

Omelette Rice

"Old Cat" had the spicy tom yam fried rice. A few weeks ago, we had a meal at Thai Express too, that time, "puk" ordered this and said it was not spicy. But this order today sure was spicy, coz "Old Cat" was sweating while he was eating!

Tom Yam Fried Rice

And.. the famous Thai Express Tom Yam Soup. The soup's clear but it's one of the most fiery and potent soup you can drink.

Tom Yam Soup - Potent!

Petit Provence @ West Coast Plaza

A colleague told us that Petit Provence has just opened a new branch in West Coast Plaza and asked us all to have lunch at WCP because he wants to buy some bread here. So we all had lunch and visited the bread shop with him.

This branch is the 3 branch of this Japanese Bakery that's very popular in Holland Village. (Heard this branch's the first franchised shop)

New Petit Provence in West Coast Plaza

A few of us bought some bread.
I got some cream wassants for my sis who loves the wassants here.

Cream Wassant

A tad expensive at 60 cents each, but you only eat them once in a while. :-)
They are so soft and delicious.

MOF Japanese Sweets & Coffee @ West Coast Plaza

After our Japanese lunch (posted yesterday), we wanted to have some desserts. We went over to MOF Japanese Sweets & Coffee Café.

Here are some of the desserts we had. Doesn't this look gorgeous?
Ice cream and Japanese rice cakes.

This is the Macha Imo. I think 3 persons had this. (Why? because I told them it's nice. LOL)

They come with little piece of paper explaining what it is. I think my colleagues loved it. :-)

Another colleagues and I had this. It's some really really sticky baked rice cakes with crispy outer skin and soft filling inside. It also has really nice and cold red bean paste beside it, and soy powder sprinkled.

Closer view, so you know what I mean. I think it's not too bad.
But it really gives you a good jaw exercise!

I think this little slip that came is wrong? I don't see any gelato above. LOL
Maybe teething problems? They are not familiar with their desserts yet.
I think the dish above should be Abekawa.

Sushi Tei @ West Coast Plaza

Three colleagues have gone to recce (or reconnaissance) the newly refurbished and renamed "West Coast Plaza". They saw a few restaurants opened for business and told us, we found a new place to eat. We will go next week.

So the next week arrived. (ie few days ago) I got an early morning SMS to remind me to bring my Sushi Tei card. A colleague had $40 worth of vouchers and with the Sushi Tei card we can get another 10% off.

Ah. West Coast Plaza looks different. But there's still hint of the old Ginza Plaza all around. If your memory's good, you can remember which shops were in which lots too. :-)

The manager at Sushi Tei looks familiar. I think he is from the Holland Village branch. I recognise him. (because he gives excellent service before at HV)

I think he must be having a tough time trying to teach all the new hands in this branch though. Service is having some teething problems, but I guess it will go away after a while.

Now to continue, here's what we ate:

One colleague had the salmon sashimi rice.

Then our order of the fried salmon skin came. We had to return this because it was cold. Really cold. Too long on the counter? Anyway, we told them, they took it back and did something to it and it came back much better.

I had the char siu ramen. Spicy Miso version. So so lah...

Ms Preggy's who is no longer Preggy is now eating all her raw food. LOL
She had the this! Count the number of raw stuff in it. :-)

Old Cat and Dpuk had the crab fried rice, with no crabs in sight. LOL
But the orangy egg brightened it up a bit.

Pirate and almondjelly had the crab fried rice too, but theirs is with real crab. :-)

We had a plate of salmon belly to share and that was about it.
We still think Holland Village and Ngee Ann City branches have better chefs. The food from HV's / NAC's kitchen somehow tastes better. :-)

We will go back again in maybe 3 month's time and see how they fare. It's opened less than a month, so we expect teething problems.

(For those working in Science Park and NUS, there's a free shuttle service to West Coast Plaza)
