Li Xiang Curry @ Dover Food Centre

Colleagues and I went to Dover Food Centre to have lunch because a colleague said that the fruits and juice stall uncle is closing his stall and it's the last day of operation. It seems he has been 'forced' to go  by rivals in the food centre. So many things have happened and even the fruit stall's van has been vandalised! (This is according to our sources!)

It seems he has been selling his things so cheap that people are not buying from other stalls. There goes our $1 juice with no ice added. The juice is cold because he stores the fruits in the fridge first. Now we have to go back to crappy stalls that sells you only 1/3 cup juice and lots of ice. (and these crappy places charge you more if you say you don't want ice!) Sigh....

Before we have our fruits. We went to have our food first. There were empty tables in front of the curry stall, so we decided to eat curry! Lots of different kinds of curry! The 4 of us decided to order 4 different kinds of curry and share.

The Vegetable Curry.  This has the lightest taste of all the curry. For the healthy and those who need fibre. ;-)

Veggie Curry

The Fish Curry. The fish is not bad, was fresh, but the portion is small. ;-(
The tow pok was also yummy! Love curry soaked tow pok that squirks out curry when you bite it!

Fish Curry

The Mutton Curry. The mutton is nice and it seems that it is our favourite curry.
It's thick and best poured over the rice.

Mutton Curry

The Pork Curry. We thought they got a pig that's on diet? LOL
The curry is nice, but it's too bony!

Pork Curry

Have you ever wondered how many grains of rice is there in a bowl of rice?
I think this plate of rice has  probably 3469 grains of rice!

How did I derive the number?
Usually a cup of uncook rice gives you around 2 bowls of cooked rice right?
A grain of rice is usually around 25 mg and a cup of rice is around 200 grams.  So that will give you around 8000 grains of rice. I am guessing this plate has 3469 grains, do you think I am correct? LOL...

3469 grains of rice

So after lunch, our dear colleague who has become the fruit uncle's best customer ordered a mix fruit platter. This huge plate costs only $5. Not much selection left because he has not been ordering fruits.

But there was loads of agar-agar, jackfruit, pineapples, water melon and rock melon (hidden below).

The $5 plate of fruits

Li Xiang Curry @ Dover Food Centre

This could be one of the most unpretentious stall around at Dover Food Centre. We know this place will soon be gone. The SERS thingy is almost done, so we know very soon, they will all move to a new place.  That might be the reason why no stalls here looks pretty at all.

But somehow old school people like my colleagues and I like their curry. We like their variety of curries. Each curry taste different and it sure is tasty! We don't have stomachs of steel, and we know our stomach can't take it, yet the brains dictate what we went to eat, not the stomach.

This is our lunch today.

Li Xiang Curry @ Dover Food Centre

Two other colleagues shared with me curries from this stall. This is the curry vegetables. We had one colleague who does not eat vegetables and he did not touch this at all. Why do some people hate vegetables so much?

Curry vegetable is the 'healthiest' of all the curries we are having. It's lighter and the gravy is not so thick. I like cabbage!

Vegetable Curry

As you can see from the first photo, the curries here are not expensive, so for $3 you don't expect a full bowl of meat. So to show you the meat, I have to use my spoon to help me today. This is the chicken curry.

If you notice at their stall, their chicken is cooked with curry and then taken out from the curry so stop it from cooking further before it turns mushy. It's only when you order it they put the chicken back in the curry.

Chicken Curry

The pork curry. I am a very porky person, so I like this curry. I dont remember the pork curry having huge bones like this. It used to be cubes. But Mr or Ms Piggy's flesh comes out from the bones easily, so it was easy to eat it anyway. You can imagine it right from looking at the photo.

Pork Curry

The 4th curry we had. The mutton curry. The mutton curry has the thickest or creamiest curry. It's my favourite curry today. The mutton was tender and had no hints of gamey smell at all. I know some people like the smell of it, but not me. (my brother is one who likes the smell! haha)

Mutton Curry

The plate of rice that goes with the 4 curries above. Every grain of rice was drenched in curry. Not a single grain was wasted. Ah... I mixed all 4 curries in. What an explosion of taste!

Rice oh Rice...

Think it's $13.50 for the 4 curries above with 3 plates of rice. Quite ok right?
After lunch, our tummies were really really warm! Such a nice feeling. ;-)

Li Xiang Curry @ Dover Food Centre

Colleagues and I had lunch at Dover Market and Food Centre today. It has been a long long time since I ate food from this stall.

We realised that they have moved. They were previously at the 'main section' of the food centre. (the section further away from the market), they have moved to the food section that is right next to the market section.

Out of curiosity, we asked why they moved. The lady boss said, the person whom they leased the stall previously wanted the stall back. But the stall they are now occupying was vacant and they could get it directly from NEA.

No, the lady is not scolding me. haha.. She is asking if it's only one bowl of rice I wanted.

Another colleague is sharing, that's why we could order 3 different kinds of curry.
This is the vegetable curry.

Vegetable Curry

The pork rib curry.

This photo has the pork that is submerged under the curry 'lifted and stacked up'. So it might look it is a lot, but it is not.

Pork Curry

The fish curry. For the fish curry, you got to wait a while for them to prepare, the rest were almost instant.

Fish Curry

The curries all have their own distinct flavour and it's always enjoyable to have their curry. They are one of the more popular stalls at the food centre. If we had another person sharing, we could have ordred the chicken curry as well!

Comparing the curry sauces, we like the sauce from the fish the most, then vegetable, then pork.
Everything above with 2 plates of rice, $9.50

148 Curry Rice @ Bukit Timah Food Centre

Someone left a comment on this blog, sugggesting that I should try the Curry Rice at this food centre. I finally did, last Sunday.

There sure was a long queue. The queue was fast moving, so that's good.

I had 2 vegetables, 1 mushroom and one curry chicken wing. I think it was $3.
As it was 'Curry Rice', a generous amount of curry was poured over it.
The vegetables were nicely cooked, chicken curry was almost 'melt in your mouth' because it was so soft. It was tasty, but a bit messy. LOL...

Do you realize that there are people around you that will never order 'mix rice'? It is not that they do not like to eat them, but it clashes with their personality! I know of a few people who is like this.

They take a look at it, think that it is so messy, and just could not stand it. The only way they can have mix rice is to request that they have the food separated into individual plates. It will then look neat and proper.

Just wondering.. How many of you are like that too?

I am one who likes this mess, I can scoop up a spoonful of rice and taste all kinds of flavours in it. Doesn't it gives you satisfaction? haha...

Curry Favor Japanese Kitchen @ Stamford House

This was last Friday's dinner that Momo and I had with 2 other friends.

No, we were not asking meeting each other because we wanted to ask favor from each other, or even get into their each other's good books, just because we ate at Curry Favor.

The place is a bit 'romantic' with dim lights, so the following photos are grainy ;-)

We all ended up eating the Curry Rice. They all came with a choice of either salad or soup.

One of our friend, "whose name has a song" ordered this. He has the Beef Fry Curry. $17.90 Does it look like the Dubai palms?

Inside one of the 'islands' of the palm.

Momo had the Stuffed Mushroom Fry Curry $18.90
Yes, it also looks like the Dubai Palms.

Careful when you bite into it, it squirts out lots of juice.

For me, I had the Rosu Katsy Curry. $13.90
No more palm shape Dubai islands though.

But it still has an arabian theme. Aladdin's lamp! The curry comes in a container that looks like Aladdin's lamp. We could choose either spicy or less spicy curry. I had the spicy version.

The other friend, 'The Gorilla', a nickname we just came up that night, had the Hire (Pork Filet) Katsu Curry. $19.90

The curry sauce also comes in an Aladdin's Lamp container. Pour your curry over the katsu.

We were told Rosu Katsu has more fats in the meat, while Hire Katsu is the leaner one.
Hmmm We think otherwise. We think Hire is tastier. haha...

Yes, we tried everyone's dish. Nice place to try your curries, a tad pricy, but the place's nice and cosy and reasonable good service.

Curry Gardenn @ Turf City

On Tuesday this week, we realized so many of our colleagues were on leave. 'Wire' our colleague noticed something else, all the anti-Indian food colleagues are all on leave! That leaves us, all the Indian food lovers a chance to hunt for some delicious Indian food.

So, he suggested that we should all go try this Indian food place at Turf City. It was only 4 of us, so we hailed a cab to Turf City.

We ate at Curry Gardenn (yes, double n). This place is actually opened by an IT guy! Yes, the boss Mr Udaya Kumar is a .Net programmer! But he leave the running of the business to his brother Ravi.

While we sat down and waited for our food, papa dams were served. If you are wondering, it's free flow. ;-)

The masala chicken that we had. It's also their signature dish. Delicious.

The spinach. Take your veg guys.

And the chick peas. This is quite yummy!

With our beautiful super long grain rice! The portion of rice is a bit small, so you might need seconds.

The main reason we are here. For the fish head! Curry Gardenn's signature dish.

The fish head is cooked without coconut milk, so it might taste a bit different from the usual fish head. No MSG added too. The fish head is only cooked when you order it, so you got to wait. Our wait was around 20 mins wait. By the time it came, we already finished whatever is shown above. LOL

The fish head comes bubbling hot in the claypot. See the steam! If you notice, you can see the curry bubbling too. :-)

It's a whole fish head. The curry is on the sweetish side. Today's fish had some slight fishy smell though. Wire said it is usually better on other days.

But is sure was tasty though. We finish every single bit of it. Even the gravy was not spared. LOL...

While we were eating our food, the next table had 4 angmoh kids eating Roti Tisu. It was so huge and tempting that when we finished our food, we ordered one to try too. We enjoyed it as much as the kids did too.

That's Ravi at the cash register. ;-)

Another satisfying Indian lunch. All of the above, rice at 6 portions, plus 4 drinks cost $46.
Think the fish head is $16.

Curry Favor Japanese Kitchen

Curry Favor is doing something nice for certain in return for favors right?

2 of our dearest friends who are getting married, invited a few of us over for lunch last Sunday. It is for the discussion of their wedding preparation, assignment of duties, brainstorming etc. Guess what? They invited us to this place that is so well named for it! haha....

Curry Favor is at Stamford House. (walking distance from City Hall MRT)
Their website: http://www.curry-favor.com/

Yup, that is actually the table place mats.

We all ordered the set, where you have either a salad or miso soup. Most of us took the salad. It's very plain, but healthy right?

You can guess from the name of the place, what it serves best. We all ordered all the different type of Japanese curry. This is what I ate. Pork belly curry.

This is the veg curry. (I think its with chicken right? looks like it)

This looks like beef? I am not sure at all. haha...

This is the mushroom curry.

After eating the curry, its time to work. It was actually discussion throughout the whole lunch.

Sorry the pictures are all quite blur for today's posting. Place a bit dark.

The next time you want help from people, you know where to bring them.

For those who always ask about the price, errr.. not sure, it's paid for. LOL...
Now we can't wait for the wedding. It's going to be at Raffles Hotel and at the lawn. How nice yah, a garden wedding... Better save our angpow money now.
