Wild Rocket @ Mount Emily

This dinner was to celebrate Dad's birthday earlier in the month. KopiKosongGirl and I have been tempted by photos of food there and thought we shall make a trip "up to the mountain" to try it.

Talk about mountains and hills in Singapore, it's probably the only county in the world that has quite a few "mountains" and yet each "mount" is lower than the famous Bukit Timah Hill!

The food at Wild Rocket is like a fusion or rojak of all things we locals like to eat 'campur' the European, Japanese, Thai, Filipino etc style of food. Chef calls it 'Modern Singaporean'.

All these mixing and campuring taste rather good! Wondered how long his team experimented with the tastes.

Wild Rocket

It's always nice to start with some warm bread.

Our parents decided to order from the ala carte menu, while the two of us decided to order the set menu. We were tempted by the different things that we could try from the set menu.

From the ala-carte menu:

Wild Rocket
Blue Swimmer Crab Congee Soup with Egg Emulsion. ($16.50)

Dad ordered this I think he saw the word crab. It's a congee, the watery type that most of us grew up eating. The porridge has settled below. The stock was very rich though with a hint of porridge. The blue swimmer crab and prawns in it were nice. We wished for more crab though. ;-)

Mum ordered a mesclun salad but did not arrive but we did not ask about it because we were busy tasting each other's starter. We only realised it half way through the meal.

Wild Rocket
Iberico Pork Char Siew with Shanghai Kao Cai and Quinoa ($38)

From a list of dishes from the Mains, mum chose this. She would usually choose fish, but we were surprised she ordered this instead.

The dish came covered with a piece of soften rice paper. So unexpected and so 'fun'! You get to unwrap your dish!

Wild Rocket
The chef has used Iberico Pork to make delicious Char Siew. They certainly made good use of the fine ingredients and this was very good. It was very fragrant. Does not really taste like the char siu we would expect from the regular 'shao la' stall, but there's something in it that was quite addictive.

How interesting to serve it with quinoa too!

Wild Rocket
300 day grain-fed Black Angus Ribeye with pioppino mushrooms and truffle sabayon. ($45.80)

We were not surprised that Dad will order this. He always order beef and we know he can't 'tahan' not eating it. Dad loved it and he thinks it's worth it too.

Wild Rocket

It's interesting how they serve the steak. Totally hidden below was I think the mash potato.

From the Set Menu:

The set menu has 2 choices each for the Starters, Pasta, Main and Sweets. Since there were two of us ordering the set menu, we got to try everything! Woo hoo! We tried Chef Willin's 4 Course Menu that was $65.80 each.

Starters:

Wild Rocket
Adobo duck with onsen-style quail egg, truffle mash and baby spinach.

Very interesting starter isn't it? A hint of Filipino cuisine in starter. The adobo has been cooked till all the vinegar that was used have evaporated till there was no hint of vinegar. KopiKosongGirl liked it.

Soft centred quail eggs and truffle mash. Quite a delicious appetizer it was!

Wild Rocket
Bombil 'tofu' fish tempura with japanese curry and pickle.

Bombil is also known as Bombay Duck which is not a duck! It's a small lizardfish. Don't ask me what is that, I just know I have never tasted it and this was fried till crispy and I can eat the whole thing!

The plating is interesting with lil dots everywhere.

Wild Rocket

We were quite intrigued by the little flower plant on top! So delicately done!
The curry sauce is very familiar, just thicker and the yellow cubes are the familiar yellow pickles.

Taste wise, think of McNuggets with Curry Sauce, but push it up 10 levels!

Pasta:

Wild Rocket
Nori tsukudani spaghettini with arabian white prawns

KopiKosongGirl remembered the aroma that filled the air when the dish came out. The prawns was so fragrant. A clever use of nori that has been simmered in mirin, sake, shoyu and sugar. It's not that salty and it goes so well with the skinny spaghetti.

A bit like furikake over rice. We would want to replicate some of this at home so that when we are hungry we can just boil some pasta and mix it all in. Yummy!

Wild Rocket
Chicken and pumpkin thai curry ravioli

It's like eating flat wanton with pumpkin thai curry over it. Not very spectacular, probably because the spaghetti was way much nicer.

Main:

Wild Rocket
roast red snapper with otak otak sauce and baby brussels sprouts

The fish was nicely done and the sauce below tasted just like otak otak! KopiKosongGirl did not waste a bit of the sauce and polished it off.

Wild Rocket
They seem to like to hide things below their protein ya? LOL

Wild Rocket
quail with 'tom kha' style coconut cream and black rice.

It's probably the smallest poultry drum stick ever. It's like that in other restaurants too. Quails are so small! I am quite surprise that the was meat to bite in this quail. Usually they are dry and almost meatless.

The quail was resting over a pool of galangal infused coconut cream. On the side was a jelly cube that if I remembered correctly green tea.

Wild Rocket

See! More hiding! The black rice below the breast portion of the quail. It's or chok bee!
Interesting taste and texture. Or chok bee was a little 'liab liab'. Hehe.

Sweets:

Wild Rocket
Sugee cake with burnt gula melaka and coconut ice cream.

I don't remember eating any sugee cake since a little kid. I would say I can't appreciate it. Maybe because I am not Eurasian. I think Eurasians love their sugee cakes!

Interesting how our tastebuds have travelled all over! Look at the list of ingredients and the various styles of cooking!

Wild Rocket
White chocolate lychee martini tart with brandied cherry

The wife's kind of dessert. She loves alcohol laced food! The brandied cherry looks quite cool eh?
I think this is worth a try if you come here.

More desserts:

We also ordered other desserts. We saw on the menu dark lava chocolate gateau. It comes with either banana flambe or milk ice cream. We had the banana flambe.

Wild Rocket
Dark lava chocoalte gateau with banana flambe. ($13.50)

If you are wondering why the cake and banana is at the corner of the plate, see the full picture below.

Wild Rocket
Plating lah.

We suddenly remembered what cooking teachers always tell us. Put a cake on plate, a big fancy one, then dust come chocolate or sugar over it, you can charge more for it and no one will complain. LOL!

Wild Rocket

The lava flows... yummy.....

Wild Rocket
Wild rocket chendol ($13.80)

OK, the most expensive chendol we have ever tasted. It's quite yummy and addictive though. Served in a tall big glass, the 4 of us had our long spoons digging and digging the different layers.

Wild Rocket

When KopiKosongGirl booked the table for 4 over the Internet, she asked if she could order any special dessert. There was no reply, but we asked via Instagram to the chef if they can make black forest cake.

It was just for fun and guess what? Chef Willin is super. He asked his pastry chef to make these special black forest cakes!

Wild Rocket

This was really delicious black forest cake. Cherries that was soaked in brandy that Dad and the wife says so so shiok. All the ingredients of a true black forest cake but just a different 'assembly'.

We think they should permanently place this in their menu! Don't you feel like having some now?

Most of us have been to to the various top restaurants in Singapore. If you are a resident of Singapore or visiting Singapore, you should try this 'modern Singaporean' food at least once. The service here is also quite good, very personalised.

Zero.Zero @ The Central

[This was a HungryGoWhere food tasting / review session with the HungryGoWhere folks.]

Zero.Zero, the moment you walk in has a warm cosy feel to it. If you are a woody/brown person the deco here would please you from the start. I like the deco that makes you very comfortable. Probably because I like the earthy tones.

Zero.Zero @ The Central

Zero.Zero is by the same people behind Tao's Restaurant. They serve fusion food that's quite reasonably priced and of quite good quality too.

Zero.Zero @ The Central

There are a few sections in the restaurant. There are a few private rooms, an open place where you can hold private corporate events and also the above, two long parallel tables where I was told, people hold intimate wedding banquet for close family and friends.

Zero.Zero @ The Central

This was the Zero Signature Set that we tried that night.  It's a picked 1 dish from each section style of ordering.

When you are ordering food, there's a guy who comes with a iPad to take your orders. Take a peep into his iPad like we did. It's quite a cool app that you can view photos of the dishes that you want to order!

Here's the amuse bouche and the 5 courses that I had.

Amuse Bouche

Zero.Zero @ The Central
We started with a shot glass of icy plum juice. It was served on a wooden container that's filled with ice. The slightly sourish taste activates your saliva glands and you can't wait to have your meal!

Zero.Zero @ The Central
We had 3 little creations for the Amuse Bouche. What was served to us that night was a potato croquet, mini or shall I say micro toast with foie gras on it and seared scallop on watermelon. The potato was nice, but I could not appreciate the foie gras.

Zero.Zero @ The Central
While I did not really like the toast and foie gras because of a personal bias, I really like the seared scallops on watermelon. It has a refreshing feel to it.

Cold Dish

Zero.Zero @ The Central
There were 5 choice for the cold dish and I chose the Smoked Duck Breast with Apple Slices. The slightly salty smoked duck goes well with the apple slices that was crunchy and sweet.

I like how the crunchy and sweet apple slices went with the salty tender yet a little chewy duck meat. If you like you could also pour the shot glass of apple puree over it. The slightly acidic puree will cut through the sweetness and saltiness of the dish, but I prefer it just the apple slices and duck.

Zero.Zero @ The Central

I borrowed my neighbour's dish to take a photo too. If you don't like duck, try the Maguro Tataki Carpaccio. Looks quite good doesn't it?

Side Dish

Zero.Zero @ The Central
For my side dish, I chose the Stewed Beef Tendon. Most of us ordered this because we all heard it's once of the best dishes around.

It is really very good. The tendon had been braised till they just dissolves in your mouth. The braise is very nice too and the 2 bread sticks can be used to soak up the sauce. I would love to have 2 portions of this!

Zero.Zero @ The Central
This was also a 'neighbour's dish' that I borrow to photograph.
It's the Grilled Escargot with Cheese.

Zero.Zero @ The Central
Someone thought of trying Sake and was introduced this Sakura Sake.

Oooo. This very different indeed. It's fragrant and very sweet!
You might forget this is sake and down the whole bottle!

Soup

Zero.Zero @ The Central
For the soup, I had the Japanese Clear Fish Soup. I chose this because I saw on the menu that the rest of the soup were cream based and did not feel like having a heavy soup. The soup was all right. Light and tasty, but a little forgettable. ;-)

Zero.Zero @ The Central
The neighbour's Cream of Mushroom Soup with Truffle Oil. He seemed to enjoy it, so I guess it was good.

Main Course

Zero.Zero @ The Central
Everyone heard that this was the best, and almost everyone who liked beef ordered it. It's 'Beef Loin on Houba Leaf'.  The beef was placed on the houba leaf and it's on top of a very heated stone. Very hot stone!

Houba or some spell it as Hoba Leaf is a species of Magnolia that's grown in the higher altitude forest in Japan.

Zero.Zero @ The Central
The beef is only lightly sprinkled with salt and pepper. One of the reasons why the place is called Zero.zero is that they want you to try dishes as it is, with minimal flavouring.

The beef loin was good! The leaf was slightly crackling all the time, and it also gave a slight burnt aroma while you cook it.  The leaf acted like a 'non stick' layer that prevented the beef from sticking on the stone. Cook the beef according to the done-ness you like.

I would highly recommend you to try this!

Zero.Zero @ The Central
If beef is not your thing, maybe you can try what another neighbour tried, this was the Pan Roasted Duck Confit with Mustard Cream.

Dessert

Zero.Zero @ The Central
I heard everyone said the Zeromisu was excellent, but I wanted to try their Vanilla Mille Feuille, Zero Style. It was I guess all right.

ZeroZero1Zero.Zero @ The Central5
OK, I confess. I ordered this because it comes with a scoop of ice cream!

It was a good meal and also to meet up with some HungryGoWhere reviewers. The neighbour that I was talking about, he looked so familiar, but both of us can't figure out where and when we met!

I think a 5 course meal for $89.80++ was a good deal. The food's of a certain quality too. It's a nice place to bring your date for a meal with a view (depending on where you are seated). I read of a review by a lone diner (on HungryGoWhere) too that says it's a nice place to eat alone.

Hint: There are a few credit cards that either give you a 1-for-1 or 50% off this set meal. Read other reviews on the HungryGoWhere site for the offer updates. ;-)

Island Cafe @ Tangs Plaza

I had some points that were expiring from my Tangs card, but i didnt have anything to buy at CK Tang. So the next way to use up the points was to eat at Island cafe :-)

I usually wouldnt come here, unless i had spare points to use or needed shelter from rain. And today it was for both reasons that i came in here for lunch with Dino.

Dino was not very hungry, so she had Grilled Taupok -$7. Very crispy taupok with the tau kwa.

I had Indonesian Fried Rice-$13. There was 2 sticks of chicken satay as well, but sorry it got hidden. Chicken curry that came with this was really soft and melt in the mouth kind.

And i was still greedy and wanted to try the Asian Pork Salad-$11. The sio bak turns out to be really good! Crispy with lots of fat to chew on (i was chewing really slowly, as i just had my braces tighten the day before). The cumcumber that came with with it was really refreshing with the thai salad sauce.

Have a good week ahead!

Friends @ Jelita

On Wednesday, our Care Group have our outing day (during the night haha...). We have an outing day after a few weeks of lessons. Our CG leader said let's try Friends, so he picked us up from our work place and drove us there.

We only had 4 tonight. 2 other members are in Japan honey-mooning.
3 of us arrived first. We placed our orders and out came the bread.

Sis smiled and said, pinch, butter, eat, pinch, butter, eat. We saw someone who was trying very hard to saw the bread with his knife 2 tables away. :-O

AQ ordered a Caesar Salad for starter.

Sis and I took the 1-1 set meal deals. It looks liked a very good deal. :-)
So, sis had the "Yarra Valley tomato bisque" I tried a bit of hers, quite tasty.

I had the "Tasmanian apple wood smoked salmon." Salmon was nice with the leaves :-)

I

For our mains, AQ had fish. I can't remember what it is called, but the receipt says Coral Trout. :-)

Sis has this thing about clear food nowdays. She had the "Queensland braised Halibut".
(with spring vegetables and young peas, white wine broth and smoked bacon)

Me? I had the "Pan-Seared “Sakura” chicken breast stuffed with macadamia"
(with seasonal vegetables & ginger orange sauce). Nice and I like the veg.

While we were half way through our mains, YL arrived. He said he had dinner because his mum cooked and he has to eat. LOL

So he joined us for dessert. We all shared the following:

Fuji Apple & Rhubarb Crumble served with Vanilla Ice Cream

Bitter chocolate mousse with raspberry compote.
Chocolate's bitter as in the name. I like bitter chocolate!

Pavlova with passion fruit and fresh berries.
(Nice, but only if you are a super sweet tooth person.)

It was an enjoyable evening with our CG mates. Usually, we will be quickly having dinner so that we can start our CG on time and also end on time.
