Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura

We always pop by Tim Ho Wan when we visit Hong Kong. It's the cheapest Michelin-Starred Restaurant in the world as they proudly proclaim. That is true if you are in Hong Kong, definitely not the case for the Singapore branches.

When the branch in Singapore opened, we were wondering, to go or not to go.  We decided 'No' because when it first opened, we just came back and the queue was just too long. We have no energy to queue up waiting so long for a meal.

Just the other day, the folks in office says, let's go try it! The queue should have died down, it should  be a nice place to celebrate a birthday our style. (ie, we can order a variety of food to try).

So we headed off to the Plaza Singapura branch. We realised that if you are going in pairs, it's rather easy to get a place. They sit 2 people rather quickly because there are always pockets of tables for 2 persons. We were a group of 9, and wait for around 45 minutes before we got our table. We were placed in a 'room' at the end where they can fit all of us in, probably after a big group left.

We ordered so many things because after waiting for so long, all of us were famished!
Our tables had the most number of steamers being stacked.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
The Baked Bun with BBQ Pork ($4.50 for 3 pieces).

One of the 'Big 4 Heavenly Kings' on the menu. Almost every table has it. One of their signature dishes that it's worth trying here.

I was recently in Hong Kong again and popped by Tim Ho Wan there, yes the ones in Hong Kong are nicer and a little different, but the ones here are tasty too, probably the better ones amongst all the different places that have the similar buns in Singapore.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore

A nice brown bottom, nicely browned. I like the top which has a nice crumbly texture to it. It has such a nice mouth-feel as you bite into it.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore

The sweetish char siu filling inside. In a big group like ours, there's a range of taste buds. It's a sweetish filling, so those who have no sweet tooth says it's way too sweet for their liking. For some with sweet tooth, they liked it.

Since we like to compare, the prices in HK and Singapore:
HKD 17 (about SGD 2.70) in Hong Kong, SGD 4.50 in Singapore.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Rice with Chicken, Sausage and Mushroom ($6).

This was so so, everyone of us took a mouth of it and pass it along....

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Beancurd Spring Roll with  Shrimp (3 pcs) ($5.50)

This was nice. It was crispy and the filling had a nice consistency and tasted good too.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Glutinous Rice Dumpling ($5)

This was all right. We ate it but it did not wow us. Something that will fill you up only.
This particular one in Hong Kong was much better.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Pan Fried Carrot Cake (3 pcs) ($4.50)

Another of the 'Big 4 Heavenly Kings' on the menu, so we thought we should try it. It's text book correct. No fault about it, no wow to it too.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Spring Roll with Egg White (3 pcs) ($4.50)

There so many things that we tried, I forgot how this tasted. LOL

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Garlic, Mushroom and Spinach Dumpling (3 pcs) ($3.80)

This was interesting to me. Something different from the other meat based dumplings that we had. The skin consistency was good too. You can see it from the photo above.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Dumpling Teochew Style (3 pcs) ($4)

We put 2 or 3 for every single 'Steamed' item on the menu, so the items came non stop. They had really fast service, so food kept coming and we kept eating.

As the food kept coming to our table, this stood out because it tasted rather different. It had peanuts inside. You get a crunchy bite as you bite into it. It's something like the Pink Triangular shape kueh we eat locally, but these were wrapped delicately in thin dumpling skin.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Prawn Dumpling (4 pcs) ($5.50)

It's ok...

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Steamed Egg Cake ($3.80)

The 'Ma Lai Ko' listed as the 'Big 4 Heavenly King' really was very good. Served steaming hot, you pick it up and it's so light and fluffy. You eat it and it gives you a nice aroma that makes you want to have more.

We only ordered 2 of this, and though we should order a few more!

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce ($4)

Our lunch group is a 'siao kway kar' (chicken feet fanatic) group of people. Someone suggested we do the usual 8-10 steamers of it, but the gatekeeper said, no! 4 is max because we have ordered too much things here.

We were a bit disappointed with it though. It's lacking in flavour, the feet was not marinated enough. We rate it as barely pass. Hard to describe, it's the kind of 'connection' that only chicken feet lovers will know. All of us had a mouth and 'shake head'. LOL

However, as chicken feet enthusiast, we finished it all. We left no small bones unsucked!

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Beancurd Skin Roll with Pork and Shrimp (3 pcs) ($4)

This was again OK. Nice to eat, but leaves no feeling of having wanting more of it.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Pork Dumpling with Shrimp (4 pcs) ($5)

It's all right.
If you can't 'dimsum' without ordering this, go ahead.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Beef Ball with Beancurd Skin (3 pcs) (4.20)

This just tasted so weird. It's mushy and just mushy period.

This is totally unlike the Hong Kong version which had nice hints of orange peel and the beef ball bouncy there.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Pork Rib with Black Bean Sauce ($4.20)

I like pork ribs, so the following statement might be a bit bias. It was nicely done, light and yet has flavour to it. The meat I remembered was tender.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Tonic Medlar and Osmanthus Cake (3 pcs) ($3.50)

There are two desserts and we ordered both. This Osmanthus Cake was really nice. It's something sweet tooth folks will like. It's nicely chilled and it's not as sweet as the ones in Hong Kong. Something that we all liked.

The Yam Puree with Sago was ordered because there's a colleague who is a die hard Yam Puree fan. It's the warm dessert and of course he liked it because it was Yam.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Vermicelli Roll with Pig's Liver ($5.50)

When we placed our orders when we arrived, we were told there's no vermicelli rolls today because the rice vermicelli steamer had broken down. So we thought what a pity because there's this colleague who loves Pig's Liver.

Just as we were about to ask for the bill, we noticed there was a sudden stream of vermicelli roll being served to other customers. We asked if the machine is back in order. The service staff said yes. And so, another round of ordering begun......

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Vermicelli Roll with Prawns ($5.50)

Knowing that we are big eaters, the lady asked if we also wanted the Shrimp with Chives version too. We were already way too full to remember how it tasted. I faintly recall this was something we can order.

There are certain things that we nice here, others not so. If you are heading to Hong Kong for a holiday, eat the ones there. It's cheap in Hong Kong as their promotional material says, but be reminded that only applies to Hong Kong. :-)

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar @ Plaza Singapura

If you are a tea-drinker in Singapore, here's something that might just interest you. Lipton has created a world-first pop up High Tea Bar here in Singapore at Plaza Singapura.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

I was there earlier tonight (at their kind invitation) and thought it was rather interesting. Why?

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

It was interesting because we were pairing tea with food. Different types of teas and different types of food. We all know taste is a very subjective matter, so why try it out and see if it works for you.

The poster above says keep an open mind, and really you need to do it. Dennis (Superadrianme) and Derrick (SgFoodOnFoot) and I were really playing with our taste buds and other sensory like smell and sight. We had all the different kinds of tea and food and it was like a lab experiment.

Close your eyes, smell the tea, the food, eat something then drink, drink something then eat, a big mouth of tea, a sip of tea, leave the tea bags longer, take it out for a mild brew, etc.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

Yup, that's how one side of the pop-up High Tea Bar looks like. There are also bar stools and a 'garden' area!

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

That's a nice cuppa don't you think? Who here grew up drinking the good old Yellow Label Lipton?
Lipton has partnered with Canele and got their Executive Pastry Chef Christophe Grilo to come up with six tea sets paired with Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie's sweet and savoury items. Lipton had their Unilever Food Technologist, Miss Wong May Chee to work with Chef.

(We had a short conversation with Miss Wong, and she knows a lot about tea!)

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

The familiar aromatic Lipton Yellow Label Tea has been paired with Lemon Macarons specially made for the Lipton High Tea Bar.

Play time!

Try it by having some tea, then take a bite of the macaron. Try it again with both macaron and tea in your mouth. See if your taste buds tells your brains different things. Do you feel that the tea becomes smoother? The sweetness of the macarons and unsweetened tea fuses and releases a different taste?

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

Of course Information Technology - IT (yup, that's what I do in my day job) does makes this whole experience more fun. Without software engineers building programs, can't imagine us living in the modern world right?

The mechanics of the High Tea Set Redemption: Members of public can enjoy a complimentary Lipton High Tea set with mimimum spend of S$25 at Plaza Singapura or S$15 worth of Lipton products at the Lipton High Tea Bar.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

The fun starts when you choose one of the 6 High Tea sets. There's a huge touch screen where you order.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

If no one's behind you, play around with the software, I mean place your orders.
You confirm your orders all on the touch screen.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

Over at the order taking side, when you confirm your order, they know what you order and give you a 'number'. Bring that to your seat and they will deliver your High Tea Set very soon.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

Derrick, Dennis and I were later joined by Adrian and William. Since we were a big group, we sat at the 'garden' area. (yes, with faux grass some more and a rabbit!) Err, yes, we were imagining we were at a picnic, because we sat under a big brolly!

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

There are 6 Lipton High Tea sets to choose from. 3 sets are only available at the Lipton High Tea Bar. The other 3 sets, you can order them if you visit Canele.

This was the Lipton Forest Fruit Tea with Chicken Mini Burger. The tea is a blend of strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant, blackberry and cherry. Pair that with poached chicken served with tomatoes, fresh lettuce, mayo and brioche.

Now, if you are like 'Da Chang Jin', you should be able to imagine the taste in your mind. Can you?

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

Lemon Macarons!! Only at the High Tea Bar.  I did walk to Canele to 'steal a look' and I don't see this there.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea BarLipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

Left: Traditional Salmon and Cucumber Sandwich.
Right: Le Chocolat Croustillant.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea BarLipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

Left: Classic Cheesecake
Right: Chestnut Cassis Sponge Cake.

Note: They are not all very big servings, let's just say it won't make you put on too much weight. The main thing is to tea and food pairing. Taste it.

Lipton Pop-up High Tea Bar

Some of the tea boxes that you can purchase at the pop up store. That's the Forest Fruit that's paired with the Chicken Mini Burger. The good old Yellow Label goes well with the lemon macarons.

The Russian Earl Grey is a special collection. What do you think it should be paired with? The traditional Salmon and cucumber sandwich, Chestnut Cassis Sponge Cake, Classic Cheesecake or Le Chocolat Croustillant?

Why not try it yourself if you can't decide which tea goes with what food?

Lipton High Tea Bar
Plaza Singapura, Main Atrium
68 Orchard Road
Singapore 238839

It's only popping up from 16 to 21 April 2013.
Hours: 11 am to 9 pm daily. (Last orders at 8.30 pm)

Spend a minimum of $25 at Plaza Singapura or $15 worth of Lipton products in a single receipt is entitled to 1 Lipton High Tea Set.  Redemption is only valid on day of purchase. Each customer is entitled to one redemption a day.

I say, go shopping or lunch with your friend or friends and make sure everyone has a $25 receipt or just go buy $15 worth of tea. Then each of you have a different set and play with your food, I mean taste buds! Enjoy Tea and Food Pairing!

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant @ Plaza Singapura

[This was an invited tasting session courtesy of Nanxiang's PR folks - Food News]

How many have been to Shanghai and have gone to Nanxiang, one of the mandatory list of place to eat in Shanghai? I heard it's an institution that's over a century old and it's located at the old Chinese section of the city. Yup, even Anthony Bourdain was sipping the enormous big soup bun on one episode of his TV show.

If you have not been there, don't worry. Nanxiang has been in Singapore for some time, but half a year or so, they decided to expand by opening more outlets and also added new menu to satisfy the curious appetite of locals. Their Executive Chef, Chef Yee Cheong Wah though having 30 over years of experience in Chinese Cuisine, went to Nan Xiang in Shanghai China to understudy the master there, bringing back and expanding their menu here. The good news is that it's priced to be very reasonable too!

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Their new flaship Plaza Singapura outlet is a 100-seater. So if you are in Orchard Road, you know where to grab some food after a busy day shopping!

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Icy water cress honey $2.50

This drink was a winner. On hot sticky days, the icy drink cools you down instantly! With the warm weather these few days, you can easily gulp down 2 or 3 glasses of it!

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

You should order the Jelly Fish with Spicy Vinegar ($6.80) if you like Jelly Fish with a difference. It's extra crunchy! Why? It's because they use the head portion of the Jelly Fish which is the prized part of Jelly Fish.  The spicy vinegar concocted goes very well with it.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Guess what is that? It's Duck Tongue! If you are adventurous, try it! If you are like me, who love chicken feet, you would like this too!

I know many people will not touch it, but they are really quite delicious! Almost similar to crunchy version of chicken feet, only nicer!

The photo above and below is the "Yuan Yang" version of the Duck Tongue ($8).
That half was tongue marinated and cooked with Wine Sauce.
Momo preferred this version as it has the chinese wine taste.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

I prefer the Braised Sauce half of the platter. I like most things braised and I think it is they did a terrific job based on what was served to us that night. It's wonderful and absolutely rare to have this in their menu.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

"Hua Niang" Steamed Cod Fish  $13
When you order this, and when it's served, devour it immediately! Even if your dining partner don't snatch it from you, you got to eat it when it's hot to enjoy the soft, boneless slices of cod.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Stir Fried Green Bean Noodle with Crab Roe $12.80
I am not a fan of this, but Momo who is a fan of crab roe went into temporary insanity. The whole dish was so bright orange!

The green bean noodles (or what we usually call Tong Fen) is the fatter, thicker version. When you see other eat it like it's so nice, you are also tempted to try it. Not bad. It's quite slurpalicious! (ok, no such word, but it was slurpily nice!)

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

The Nanxiang icon! The King Sized Nanxiang Crab Roe Steamed Bun Soup $6.80
That's a mini steamer with one whole xiao long bao steamed in it.

Not wanting to make a full out of ourselves, we asked how are we to eat it. We were told, just drink the soup from the straw! It's hot so be really careful! You can omit eating the slightly thicker skin if you don't want to.

Out of curiosity, I ate some of the skin, and found it rather nice. There was bits of crab, crab roe etc inside the bun. I scrapped them out to eat after sucking the soup out of the straw.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Fresh Pork Filling Steamed Bun $6.00 for 6 pieces.

If you are a traditionist and think big ones are gimmicky, then order these smaller sized delicious morsels of delight. This was the fresh pork filling version. (They have many versions, I was told they have the most varieties of Xiao Long Baos in Singapore!)

Thin skinned, but thick enough so that when you grabbed it with your chopsticks, it does not break. The filling and soup was good too.

If you are a lone diner, I would suggest you order 1 steamer of this. A nice portion, 6 dumplings at only $1 each! Then order 1 appetizer if you are a small eater or a meat or fish if you want more protein.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Braised Pork Belly Ribs $12

Oooo.. Another 'bright' dish! This dish is yummy! Try and let your tongue guess the sauce! It's fruity and you and your dining companion(s) can keep guessing what fruits they have added in!

The tender, dissolve in your mouth meat goes very well with either fried or steamed mantous!

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

I like the steamed version, Momo the fried.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

This was something really light and homey!

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Steamed Egg with Clams $6

Smooth and soft. It's like how mummy will make it at home, that's if you have an excellent mum who can whip up dishes like this. If not, come down to Nanxiang and let the chefs do it for you.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Nanxiang Drunken Chicken $6.80

This whole plate went to Momo. She is more of the 'jiu kui', who loves things cooked with wine! I think there's too much wine in it, she disagreed with me and says it's just nice. She enjoyed the cold 'winey' chicken so much that HungryCow our host wanted to order a second portion for her!

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Golden Pumpkin Cake $3.60 (for 2 pieces)

I think they look like dinosaur eggs, don't you think so? (imagine the jurassic park music in your head)

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

But when we broke it, hey, there's no bird inside, but a layer of cripsy dough to bite.
Roti tisu in a round form, but made from sweet pumpkin!

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Yam Pastry with Sesame $5.20 (4 pieces)

For Yam lovers, this is your dish. I and yam are not the best of friends.
I had it because Sesame and I are good pals!

I like it that the desserts part comes in 2s or 4s, so that you can share it easily. ;-)
It's also one of the few restaurants that put their full menu online, and not only online, but with prices as well! Visit their website at: http://www.nanxiang.com.sg/
