Han Fung Korean BBQ Restaurant @ Cheong Chin Nam Road

We were at Cheong Chin Nam Road the other day to hunt for some food. We noticed the place seems to have changed behind the high boarded up area. A few restaurants have closed down and new ones opened! We ended up having the Korean BBQ Restaurant because it has been there for some time and we have not tried it before!

(p/s a full restaurant list along Cheong Chin Nam Road is available at bukittimah.net)

^^^ banchan ^^^

The selection was OK. The 3 of us thought the kimchi was quite nice. A little more fermented that most places, but not too fermented. You know what I mean right? The seaweed /sea grass like thingy was not bad too.

Banchan

^^^ Bul Go Gi ^^^

The aroma of the Bul Go Gi from the next table tempted us to order it. It was quite all right. It's a bit on the sweetish side, but very appetizing. The sweetish sauce that you see over white rice was nice. I was addicted to the sauce. LOL

Bul Go Gi

We did not have to grill the meat ourselves. The service staff did it for us at another table and when it's almost done, brought the hot plate with the portable gas stove over. How convenient!

Bul Go Gi

For the first few bites, we wrap the beef with garlic strips with the veggies. But after wrapping a few pieces we got lazy. We ate directly from the hot plate. :-)

^^^ So Go Ki ^^^

For the second dish, we thought we would try something healthier like soup. We ordered the Beef Hot Pot. In the receipt it says So Go Ki. I can't remember the name on the menu.

If you like beefy smelling and tasting soup, you might want to try this. There were lots of leeks, zucchinis, mushrooms and toufu in addition to the strips of beef inside. Below it all were lots of Korean glass noodles.

So Go Ki

It was quite a big pot and it took a while for the soup to boil. The soup finally boiled 'violently' when we were finishing our bulgogi.

It was worth the wait I guess. A very hot hearty soup awaits. The glass noodles made it quite filling dish.

So Go Ki

We had 3 persons and the 2 dishes above with 3 rice was enough to feed us. Price was around $50.

We might be back to try other stuff. We remembered this place being very quiet previously, but there seems to be quite popular nowadays. I think I still prefer the 'one' at Lorong Kilat :-)

OldTown White Coffee @ Bukit Timah

This was our dinner at OldTown White Coffee at Yuk Tong Avenue, near Cheong Chin Nam Road at Bukit Timah.

It was a humid night and of all things, we wanted to have Nasi Lemak. We could go to food centres and get some Nasi Lemak, but our minds kept telling us, "no you will regret going to the food centre with no air-con".

So, we thought of OldTown White Coffee!

Their Nasi Lemak is not too bad lah. Not the best around, but on a hungry night this was what we could think of and it's not too far from home.

We like it because it has everything. Peanuts, crispy fried ikan bilis, fried chicken wings, falf-boiled egg, cucumbers and generous of sambal.

Nasi Lemak from OldTown White Coffee

I had my nasi lemak with OldTown's cold chocolate drink.
Sis had it with a hot lemon tea.

Five Star Kampong Chicken Rice @ Cheong Chin Nam Road

This was dinner with a group of Year 12 / Pre-U friends just the other week. We used to meet every month, but everyone got busy with so many things, we did not have time to meet up. So we decided to meet up again.

While thinking of where to go, there was this repeated food programme on TV that help me decide. It was one where Fiona Xie and Gurmit Singh was on. Gurmit was introducing his favourite Chicken Rice from Five Star. OK lah! Since Gurmit likes it, we like it to! haha..

There were 11 adults and 3 kids this time. Some could not make it last minute, a family was on home quarantine, one just delivered a newborn baby, etc... But there's this big tables available at Five Star. So big and round that the table can fit all of us!

Those who were early did the ordering. We just flipped through the menu and decided on what to eat by what gets our eye's attention. So here's what we ate:

We had "half half". Half a Roast Kampung Chicken.

Five Star "Roast" Kampung Chicken

And half a 'White' Kampong Chicken.
We realise that the white chicken is more popular! When the white chicken's gone, there's still half the 'roast' ones.

Five Star "White" Kampung Chicken

The Salad You Tiao. Medium Portion.
Fried You Tiao always seem to a hit eh?

Salad You Tiao

When we ordered the Thai Style Crystal Chicken Feet, some were skeptical that anyone will eat it. So we ordered a small portion of it. Well, the skeptics did like it and were converted! If you never tried chicken feet before, try it!

Ngo Hiang Prawn Rolls. The kids can eat it too.

Sweet Potato Leaves with Garlic. Another dish that when you order, always suits most people's tastes.

We thought we would order some seafood, so we had the cereal prawns. We took cereal prawns so that the kids can eat it too.

Cereal Prawn

The Hainanese Mei Cai with Braised Pork. OK lah...

The Fried Sotong. Sorry for the blurish looking photo.
It's not too bad. The sotong was not that chewy. But I think a few minutes more it will. Some pieces were on the 'border line' cases. haha..

Fried Sotong

It was great to meet up with everyone again. It seems the next meeting date has been confirmed too! See you all at the next outing!

Al-Ameen Eating House @ Bukit Timah

On the stretch of Cheong Chin Nam Road, Al-Ameen must be one of the busiest shops around. After the peranakan food the other day, one of our dear friend who is perpetually hungry wanted to eat some more. So from Beauty World Centre we crossed the road to Al-Ameen.

We ordered 3 ice kachang, but 'tak boleh' lah, the ice kacang here. Too much colouring. Also the red bean taste funny. 3 of us ate one bean each only. LOL...

But the Naan here is not too bad. This is the Cheese Naan. Looks tempting?

Cheese Naan

When our friend ordered, he was asked, you want any sauce? He said yes, Dahl please. LOL
So they served a huge portion, a thick meal portion of it. We were wondering, wow, this is different from the watery version elsewhere. It was only when he went to pay that he realised, it's the meal portion and it's $3. LOL....

Dahl Sauce

We were already quite full, but he ordered this huge plate of Indian Rojak to share.

Indian Rojak

I could not eat anymore. I only had 2 or 3 pieces of stuff only.

Indian Rojak

The sauce is quite ok.

Indian Rojak Sauce

This place served so many kinds of food. Got to come back to try other stuff.
(and also avoid some stuff too)

OldTown White Coffee @ Bukit Timah

Got a friend that has been going to this outlet to eat / study the last few weeks. Everytime he's here, he'll sms us to join him for the dinner part. Usually, I will be too lazy to get out and meet him for coffee.

Yesterday, I thought I should meet up. So, Momo, Sis and I met up with 'Gorilla'. LOL

OldTown White Coffee

It was not only coffee today, it was for dinner. I had the Nasi Lemak Special. $5.50. Sis got the same thing. I get tempted by sambal. :-p

Nasi Lemak Special

They are quite generous with their kacang and ikan bilis and they have nice cold cucumbers.

Nasi Lemak Special

Momo and Gorilla had the Nasi Rendang Set. $7.90 Just replace the fried chicken, hard boiled egg, kacang and ikan bilis with a big chicken rendang that you get this.

Nasi Rendang Chicken

This photo does not show you the size of the chicken, but it is a huge drumstick.

Nasi Rendang Chicken

Gorilla must be hungry. After his Nasi Rendang, he ordered a Curry Chicken Toast. $6.50
The more we look at him eat, the more tempting his chicken curry drumstick becomes. But we were too full to eat it anyway. So gorilla enjoyed himself eating it while telling us stories.

Curry Chicken

The toast is the brown bread toast. 3 pieces of it.

Brown Toast for Curry Chicken

Oh, the usual drinks are ordered. White Coffee and Black Coffee. $2 each.

Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Upper Bukit Timah Road

We had relatives visiting Singapore and we met them for dinner. Aunt asked what they would like to eat, and they said: "the chicken rice that we had the last time we were here".

Looks like chicken rice in Singapore leaves a deep impression to visitors!

So, the whole 'clan' went to the chicken rice place that our aunt brought them the last time they were here, the Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice shop.

Here's what we had:

The boneless 'white' chicken. We like their chicken here because it has less fat, yet the meat's still tender and juicy. (I think the chicken's kampung chicken if I remembered correctly)

The delicious Chicken

Our 'clan' this time had 12 adults and 1 teenager. To feed the this clan, 4 plates of chicken was ordered. LOL

The 4 plates of Chicken

Enough to feed the clan? Of course not. We had doubles of the following dishes.
The chicken feet salad.

(We learn a new term for it. Our relos call it the 'white tyres'. LOL..)

Chicken Feet

The sweet and sour pork.

Sweet and Sour Pork

The spicy version of the Fan Su Ye.

Spicy Fan Su Ye

For the spicy-challenged, the no-sambal version of Fan Su Ye.

Fan Su Ye

For the fried food lovers, the Stuffed Fried You Tiao.

Stuffed You Tiao

Finally, the stuff that I did not touch, the chicken gizzard.

Chicken Gizzard

Someone from the 'clan' is a future-in-law. He followed his girlfriend down to Singapore for a holiday. He's from Ipoh and we asked him how's the chicken rice here?

He said, "Well, almost there lah..." LOL...

Prince Taiwan Porridge @ Upper Bukit Timah

I think I posted this porridge place not too long ago. I went back there again all because a few of us wanted to eat porridge. This is the dinner that we had before we went for supper at OldTown in yesterday's post.

Creature of habits maybe? We order almost the same thing.
The taman fish that's fried till very crispy with dark sauce. Ugly but delicious food. LOL

Taman Fish

The chicken in wine sauce, that's almost becoming standard.

Chicken in Wine sauce

My favourite vegetable to go with porridge. Heard some people said Sze Chuan Cai is not good for health, but we still ate it anyway.

Sze Chuan Cai with pork strips

The Mei Cai Kou Rou. Today's version seems nicer. Maybe the cook's in a really good mood today eh?

Mei Cai Kou Rou

Cai Poh Eggs, another favourite with many people.

Chai Poh Egg

Aubergine with mince pork. Comfort food too.
