Wild Rocket @ Mount Emily

This dinner was to celebrate Dad's birthday earlier in the month. KopiKosongGirl and I have been tempted by photos of food there and thought we shall make a trip "up to the mountain" to try it.

Talk about mountains and hills in Singapore, it's probably the only county in the world that has quite a few "mountains" and yet each "mount" is lower than the famous Bukit Timah Hill!

The food at Wild Rocket is like a fusion or rojak of all things we locals like to eat 'campur' the European, Japanese, Thai, Filipino etc style of food. Chef calls it 'Modern Singaporean'.

All these mixing and campuring taste rather good! Wondered how long his team experimented with the tastes.

Wild Rocket

It's always nice to start with some warm bread.

Our parents decided to order from the ala carte menu, while the two of us decided to order the set menu. We were tempted by the different things that we could try from the set menu.

From the ala-carte menu:

Wild Rocket
Blue Swimmer Crab Congee Soup with Egg Emulsion. ($16.50)

Dad ordered this I think he saw the word crab. It's a congee, the watery type that most of us grew up eating. The porridge has settled below. The stock was very rich though with a hint of porridge. The blue swimmer crab and prawns in it were nice. We wished for more crab though. ;-)

Mum ordered a mesclun salad but did not arrive but we did not ask about it because we were busy tasting each other's starter. We only realised it half way through the meal.

Wild Rocket
Iberico Pork Char Siew with Shanghai Kao Cai and Quinoa ($38)

From a list of dishes from the Mains, mum chose this. She would usually choose fish, but we were surprised she ordered this instead.

The dish came covered with a piece of soften rice paper. So unexpected and so 'fun'! You get to unwrap your dish!

Wild Rocket
The chef has used Iberico Pork to make delicious Char Siew. They certainly made good use of the fine ingredients and this was very good. It was very fragrant. Does not really taste like the char siu we would expect from the regular 'shao la' stall, but there's something in it that was quite addictive.

How interesting to serve it with quinoa too!

Wild Rocket
300 day grain-fed Black Angus Ribeye with pioppino mushrooms and truffle sabayon. ($45.80)

We were not surprised that Dad will order this. He always order beef and we know he can't 'tahan' not eating it. Dad loved it and he thinks it's worth it too.

Wild Rocket

It's interesting how they serve the steak. Totally hidden below was I think the mash potato.

From the Set Menu:

The set menu has 2 choices each for the Starters, Pasta, Main and Sweets. Since there were two of us ordering the set menu, we got to try everything! Woo hoo! We tried Chef Willin's 4 Course Menu that was $65.80 each.

Starters:

Wild Rocket
Adobo duck with onsen-style quail egg, truffle mash and baby spinach.

Very interesting starter isn't it? A hint of Filipino cuisine in starter. The adobo has been cooked till all the vinegar that was used have evaporated till there was no hint of vinegar. KopiKosongGirl liked it.

Soft centred quail eggs and truffle mash. Quite a delicious appetizer it was!

Wild Rocket
Bombil 'tofu' fish tempura with japanese curry and pickle.

Bombil is also known as Bombay Duck which is not a duck! It's a small lizardfish. Don't ask me what is that, I just know I have never tasted it and this was fried till crispy and I can eat the whole thing!

The plating is interesting with lil dots everywhere.

Wild Rocket

We were quite intrigued by the little flower plant on top! So delicately done!
The curry sauce is very familiar, just thicker and the yellow cubes are the familiar yellow pickles.

Taste wise, think of McNuggets with Curry Sauce, but push it up 10 levels!

Pasta:

Wild Rocket
Nori tsukudani spaghettini with arabian white prawns

KopiKosongGirl remembered the aroma that filled the air when the dish came out. The prawns was so fragrant. A clever use of nori that has been simmered in mirin, sake, shoyu and sugar. It's not that salty and it goes so well with the skinny spaghetti.

A bit like furikake over rice. We would want to replicate some of this at home so that when we are hungry we can just boil some pasta and mix it all in. Yummy!

Wild Rocket
Chicken and pumpkin thai curry ravioli

It's like eating flat wanton with pumpkin thai curry over it. Not very spectacular, probably because the spaghetti was way much nicer.

Main:

Wild Rocket
roast red snapper with otak otak sauce and baby brussels sprouts

The fish was nicely done and the sauce below tasted just like otak otak! KopiKosongGirl did not waste a bit of the sauce and polished it off.

Wild Rocket
They seem to like to hide things below their protein ya? LOL

Wild Rocket
quail with 'tom kha' style coconut cream and black rice.

It's probably the smallest poultry drum stick ever. It's like that in other restaurants too. Quails are so small! I am quite surprise that the was meat to bite in this quail. Usually they are dry and almost meatless.

The quail was resting over a pool of galangal infused coconut cream. On the side was a jelly cube that if I remembered correctly green tea.

Wild Rocket

See! More hiding! The black rice below the breast portion of the quail. It's or chok bee!
Interesting taste and texture. Or chok bee was a little 'liab liab'. Hehe.

Sweets:

Wild Rocket
Sugee cake with burnt gula melaka and coconut ice cream.

I don't remember eating any sugee cake since a little kid. I would say I can't appreciate it. Maybe because I am not Eurasian. I think Eurasians love their sugee cakes!

Interesting how our tastebuds have travelled all over! Look at the list of ingredients and the various styles of cooking!

Wild Rocket
White chocolate lychee martini tart with brandied cherry

The wife's kind of dessert. She loves alcohol laced food! The brandied cherry looks quite cool eh?
I think this is worth a try if you come here.

More desserts:

We also ordered other desserts. We saw on the menu dark lava chocolate gateau. It comes with either banana flambe or milk ice cream. We had the banana flambe.

Wild Rocket
Dark lava chocoalte gateau with banana flambe. ($13.50)

If you are wondering why the cake and banana is at the corner of the plate, see the full picture below.

Wild Rocket
Plating lah.

We suddenly remembered what cooking teachers always tell us. Put a cake on plate, a big fancy one, then dust come chocolate or sugar over it, you can charge more for it and no one will complain. LOL!

Wild Rocket

The lava flows... yummy.....

Wild Rocket
Wild rocket chendol ($13.80)

OK, the most expensive chendol we have ever tasted. It's quite yummy and addictive though. Served in a tall big glass, the 4 of us had our long spoons digging and digging the different layers.

Wild Rocket

When KopiKosongGirl booked the table for 4 over the Internet, she asked if she could order any special dessert. There was no reply, but we asked via Instagram to the chef if they can make black forest cake.

It was just for fun and guess what? Chef Willin is super. He asked his pastry chef to make these special black forest cakes!

Wild Rocket

This was really delicious black forest cake. Cherries that was soaked in brandy that Dad and the wife says so so shiok. All the ingredients of a true black forest cake but just a different 'assembly'.

We think they should permanently place this in their menu! Don't you feel like having some now?

Most of us have been to to the various top restaurants in Singapore. If you are a resident of Singapore or visiting Singapore, you should try this 'modern Singaporean' food at least once. The service here is also quite good, very personalised.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

If work has really gotten into you during the weekdays, you just want to spend your weekends resting, taking walks and perhaps a brunch to go along as well. If you are looking for a brunch where you can enjoy some natural breeze, try the weekend brunch at Halia located at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

If you don't already know, Halia means 'ginger' in Malay. Make a guess where Halia is located at the Botanic Gardens? At the Ginger Garden of course. Take a walk before or after having your brunch would certain aid in digestion.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

For some folks who believe in always having hot drinks even in hot Singapore weather, order the Hot Ginger Tea. It comes with a 'shot' of honey too if you prefer to sweeten it a little.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

For those like me who always prefer iced drinks. This iced ginger tea is my preferred drink on warm afternoons in Singapore. It's cold, yet it has the kick of the spicy ginger and sweetness of the added honey. Refreshing indeed!

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

If you choose to sit at the non air con section of the restaurant, you are right next to nature. This was just right beside me at the table I was sitting where I was dining at Halia recently.

For those who can't live without air-conditioning, there's always the air-condition part of the restaurant.

My brunch at Halia, was a hosted lunch by the PR firm FoodNews, who is engaged by Halia.
The following items are the 'recommended items' for you to try when you decide to pay them a visit.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Oysters with Bloody Mary. ($6 each)

If you are into oysters and you like the South Australian ones, they serve Coffin Bays oysters here with a shot of 'bloody mary'.  They are available at $6 each.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Many people eat it differently. Some like the taste of raw fresh oyster in their mouth, so they just pop the oyster in their mouth to savour the salty oyster taste first then down it with a shot of their chef's version of Bloody Mary.

Chef's recommended way of eating we were told is to drop the oyster into the shot glass and drink it all down together! Which is your favourite way of eating oysters?

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Cocktail of king prawns, spicy tomato sauce, avocado, wasabi and coriander ($22)

If you like prawns and the you also like avocado, this is a nice combination, a delicious creation by the chef here. The succulent prawns are also from South Australia, Spencer Gulf King Prawns if my memory does not fail me.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

I really like this prawn cocktail. Here's an 'underview' for you to admire. Avocado all at the bottom and the little mix of wasabi and their own mix of spicy tomato sauce does makes it quite appetising. It's light, and refreshing. There's 7 prawns in there if you are curious. The perfect number of prawns!

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Wood smoked salmon toastie, capers, crème cheese & dill, sunny side up fried egg ($24)

If your idea of brunch must include toast and eggs, this wood smoked salmon toastie is created for those who love smoked salmon. If you are interested to know like us where the salmon comes from and how it's smoked, it's oak wood smoked salmon from Scotland.

Smoked Salmon with creme cheese and dill combination by itself is already very tasty even without the fried egg. The photo I am showing has a portion of it eaten so that you can admire how it looks inside. I love the frisee that was around the toastie. I like it with the soft egg yolk!

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Cinnamon French toast, fresh seasonal berries, white chocolate and Iranian pistachio ($18)

Doesn't that just look so gorgeous. Berries are good for you, they are rich in anti-oxidants. I guess if you don't like the slight tartness of berries, the chef has drizzled melted white chocolate all over it! Sounds good? More delicious than having condensed milk over toast right?

If you see how nice the colours of the pistachio are, it's Iranian pistachios and they cost 4 times more than the usual pistachios we normally buy. The difference, there's no floury taste that lingers like in normal pistachios.

Oh yes, the toast is egg custard brioche if you are wondering.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Poached eggs on brioche, dill hollandaise, Swiss brown mushroom, spinach and tomato. ($22), (add $4 for shave honey baked ham)
I know many ladies will just order this just because the word poached egg is there. Nicely poached eggs that guarantees a flowing egg yolk for you to instagram!

I took a photo of it top down and realise it's not so appropriate to be posted. Yes, the poached eggs comes in a pair.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Halia chilli crab spaghettini Singapore-style spicy, sweet and tangy crabmeat sauce tossed in pasta ($24)

This is the signature dish that's available at both Halia at SBG and also at Raffles Hotel. I would say this is not really chilli crab kind of chilli crab. It's their version of it. It's quite tasty, a version that goes well with spaghettini.

Don't expect chunks of Sri Lankan mud crabs. This is a refine version that has been made for easy eating with fork twirling around your pasta. ;-)

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Mayura Station full blood Wagyu rump, bacon, sunny side-up hen's egg, vine cherry tomato and barbecue sauce. ($48)

Meat eaters out there, if you like beef at 11 am, order this. The chef has made special arrangements and brings in Mayura Station full blood Wagyu into his restaurants. I seem to notice they are having all things South Australia here!

If you are there for brunch, they have weekly brunch specials and the above was the special on the week I was there. (ie, not on the regular brunch a la carte menu) If you are on a non-carbo diet, this is made for you!

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

It looks so delicious and beautiful, I have to show you how it looks the other side as well. If you are wondering how heavy is this wagyu beef that costs $48,  the week I had it, it was a 150 gm piece of wagyu rump.

Oh how I adore vine riped tomatoes and the bacon too!
A bite into this beef, and it was very good. Just serve me the wagyu and tomatoes, I will be satisfied.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Sticky Valrhona chocolate brownie, salted caramel sauce & vanilla ice-cream ($12)

For the sweet tooth, let you bask in the sweetness of the sticky chocolate brownie.
Enough said, the photo above is enough to tempt and salivate chocolate lovers ya?

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Young ginger nougat frozen parfait, roasted fresh pineapple & spiced pineapple sauce ($12)

A very 'halia' dessert. Made from ginger and pineapple. It has a nice ginger 'hotness' to it. I now my wife won't take this because it has ginger. I will order this because I love ginger, yes even raw ginger that is thinly sliced.

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

The young ginger nougat frozen parfait. Either you love it or you detest it. ;-)

Weekend Brunch @ Halia, Singapore Botanic Gardens

If you are wondering who's the new Executive Chef behind this new menu, it's Australian Chef Peter Rollinson. Previously from The Prime Society, that's why his meat dishes are so good. I guess he knows the Australian produce rather well, that's why he is using South Australian produce.

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel

This was an HungryGoWhere.com invite to taste the food at The Sleeping Rhino at Klapsons the Boutique Hotel.

What an unique name! The Sleeping Rhino? We were hosted by Belda from Klapsons and she said the name and the initial TSR sounds cool. The hotel itself is really cool too! When you enter the building you will see a big sphere as the reception area. Try walking into it and ask the service staff something. Why? Try it and you will find out!

Out of curiosity, I did an online search to find out how long does a Rhino sleep each day. A rhino sleeps about 8 hours a day!

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel
The tasting menu for the night. Eaten last week.

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel
If you are a bread person, the bread roll here might just make you really happy.
It's warm to the slightly hot side. It was also really soft inside. The roll had sun dried tomatoes and I ate it without butter. It was very good by itself.

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel
One of the signature dishes is the Avocado, Mango and Prawn Salad.

This was the tasting portion. Normal serving size is huge and could be a dish itself, great for lunches for those working around this area. ($16.50 for full portion)

The mango was sweet and it goes well with the leaves, avaocado and prawns. Great idea mixing some sweet soft fruits into salads. I usually don't have dressing for my salads. The slight drizzle of the balsamic dressing does gives it a slight sweetish and slighty tart flavour to it.

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel
Roasted Mushroom Soup. Normal serving ($9.50)
Roasting the mushroom makes it more fragrant. You can tell from the colour that it's not the pale cream coloured mushroom soup. What a rich luscious colour!

The first mouth will give you a 'I want more of this' thought in your head. It's not the thick kind of soup. The viscosity of the soup is what I describe like melted ice cream. The truffle oil of course gives it an extra aroma. So if you soup the type of consistency I described, this is your kind of soup.

If you did keep some of your rolls, it goes well with the soup!

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel
Macademia Crusted Salmon Fillet. (Normal portion $22.50)

This was KopiKosongGirl's main course. She liked the macademia crust on top which she said gives it a nice bite and touch to the usual salmon.

Did not really taste it, so I can't give you more description about it.

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel
Double-cooked Pork Ribs
(Normal portion $26.50, which I was told is much more than what is already quite a huge chunk of meat that was served.)

This photo was taken without the chef's secret BBQ sauce over it yet. I have a soft spot for ribs. First the smell of pork ribs was one that makes you salivate immediately. I ate the first two ribs without the sauce first to taste how it is, and it was pretty good. The meat was tender, a gentle nudge with the fork and knife gets the meat off the bones.

I then tried it with the BBQ sauce. It was a slightly sweetish, slightly smokey and tangy sauce which was rather appetizing. The sauce is not thick kind, but is runny consistency of soft boiled egg yolks. I kept pouring it over the ribs when I was enjoying my ribs that Belda asked if I wanted to have another 'jug' of sauce! (There's more than enough sauce haha..)

With the soup and this sauce, I kinda of guess the chef does not like to thicken things up too much. So if you have similar kind of liking like me, you might like the chef's food. I know some of you folks prefer the thick gooey sticky kind of sauce over your ribs.

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel
Berry Mousse Cheese Cake (Normal portion $9.50)
With the salad, soup and mains, most of us were quite stuffed. So we could not enjoy the dessert as much as we would like to.

I remember it as not being too cheesy and rich, which was good because we were quite stuffed. I remember the texture as very soft and creamy.

The Sleeping Rhino @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel
For drinks, I had this apple flavoured tea. A glass of tea with apple flavoured syrup in a cute little beaker.

My personal take, I did not really like the syrup. Not my cup of tea literally. I did not like the smell of the syrup, reminded me of ahem.., shall not mention it here. The tea itself without the syrup was nice though. I did notice something, the ice balls in the tea were made of the same tea! As you drink your tea, the tea does not get diluted!

If you work around this area, TSR have partnered with HGW to have quite good deals.
Visit the http://www.klapsons.com or http://www.hungrygowhere.com/ to look at their deals.

I walked around and saw that they have a Cold Buffet during lunch time. All-you-can-eat spread of appetisers, soup, salads and desserts for $26++ per pax.  There is also an option of adding a main course and coffee/tea at $38++ per pax.

211 Roof Terrace Cafe @ Holland Village

It is continuation of makans for Sis's birthday. This time is with our CG. Last minute SMS here and there, we ended up at Holland V. Where did we to ended up? Ended up at 211 Roof Terrace Cafe.

We were waiting for the late comers to arrive while Alex and I roamed around Cold Storage, we decided we shall decide for everyone! So, we took the escalators to the 4th floor. haha..

We shared this. It's the Chef Special, which consists of several types of Bread and dips.
It was quite tasty. (If you like Indian taste food)

Our friend Alex had this. Baby Back Ribs. It looks delicious right? Alex seems to have enjoyed it very much, so it must be good. :-)

Darwin and sis, both ordered the Spaghetti Vongole. I think if you are here, you should order this, never fails to give you a satisfaction with the huge amount of vongole they put in.

For me, I had the Spaghetti Marinara. Quite generous with the amount of seafood buried under too! Actually, I wanted vongole, but 3 person ordering same thing, one less photo to take. haha.. The things that I do. (you going to say pengz right?)

Grace had this. Beef Lasagna. With an empty plate, I guess it must be good too!

After that, we kia kia to have cake somewhere else.
