Sushi Tei - Spring and Kagoshima Menu

If you have not tried it yet, there's a Spring Menu that is going to end soon on 15 June. I have tried it with our family a few times but the food from this post was an invited session by Sushi Tei through their PR folks.

Here's some interesting and delicious Spring Specialties available at Sushi Tei:

Sushi Tei
Sayori Sashimi [ $12 (S) / $15 (M) ]

This fish looks sleek and bright doesn't it? Sayori is a Spring delicacy. No, it's not the fish (apparently Swordfish) that invaded Singapore according to folk lore. Sayori is a tasty and delicate fish also sometimes known as Japanese halfbeak or needledish.

It's quite a fresh tasting fish, not a fishy kind of fish. The flesh is quite delicate. If you are super averse to even the slightest fishy smell, (you probably should not eat fish at all) or have it with a little ginger and a little dip of shoyu.

Sushi Tei
Pitan Tofu ($4.80)

An appetizer that century egg lovers will love. Tried it a few times and always loving it. The tofu is so soft and cold. Even without anything on it, it's delicious. They use organic tofu for this dish. If you like the texture of springy egg white that has turned transparent dark golden and salty bit of fish roe, with the sauce made from the century egg yolk, this is for you.

It's slightly salty and sweetish at the same time.

Sushi Tei
Sashimi Moriawase "Ayame" ($22 from the Spring Menu)

I know my cousin will always order this when we go to Sushi Tei.

Also, available in the regular menu, the ones from the Spring Menu has Aji, Salmon and Hamachi. The Aji (Horse Mackerel) will then be deep fried and serve back to you really crispy.

Sushi Tei
Kani Gyoza ($6)

If you are like the ladies in my home that always like to order Gyoza when they see it in the menu, this was crab meat gyoza.

Sushi Tei

It's really addictive. Light, sweet and tasty, you might need a second order.
Just look at the photo above. Yummy?

Sushi Tei
Amaebi Karaage ($6)

Sweet Shrimps! Deep fried shrimps. Just sounds so delicious doesn't it? You can finish a whole bowl per person. I ate it whole, even the head.

We had a few other food too like beef, but I would like to highlight the Kagoshima Pork dishes. The dishes presented will be in my order of preference.

Sushi Tei
Kagoshima Miso Yaki Pork ($11.50)

This might look plain and simple, but this was my favourite Kagoshima pork dish for the night. Kagoshima pork with miso grilled quite to perfection. It was juicy and doesn't have the 'siap siap' taste and the pork with miso on it gave it a nice sweetish, savoury taste in your mouth.

Sushi Tei
Kagoshima Pork Nabe / Sukiyaki ($15)

If you like Nabe, the variation this time is with Kagoshima Pork strips in it. This was the spicy soup base. Always a favourite even on warm nights in Singapore.

Sushi Tei

This is what the wife and I will order with 1 or 2 side dishes for 2 persons when we have 'date nights'. We always like the hot pots, it's not only eating it, but I think ladies love to be served food by the love ones too right?

Sushi Tei
Kagoshima Tonkatsu ($12)

I think I seldom have tonkatsu in Sushi Tei. I don't know why. We usually go to other places more famous for the tonkatsu. Surprisingly, it's good here.

Sushi Tei

Probably it's because it's Kagoshima Pork. ;-)

Sushi Tei
Kagoshima Pork Hamburger ($8)

I know there are many people around who are quite fascinated by the Japanese version of a hamburger steak. This is a dense 130g of ground Kagoshima Pork Loin. The patty also has finely chopped onions and carrots. The sauce is a traditional Okonomiyaki sauce with a hint of sake.

Sushi Tei

Another dish that I seldom order, but it's not really that dry. Probably because of the "K Pork". The sauce is the sweetish sauce. I can imagine the wife whose tongue is more tuned to savoury food saying this is too sweet. I have a more acceptable of sweet stuff think it's ok.

Sushi Tei
Sunrise Meat Ball ($8.50)

The only reason I put it the last of the K Pork dishes is because it's the most unhealthy of all. Yes, unhealthy food is also the tastiest. Minced Pork balls with salted egg yolk centre!

Everyone on Instagram has been saying that my wife eats super healthy stuff and I the other end. So I will try to be healthier and eat less of this.

Sushi Tei
Tako and Shirasu Yaki Udon ($13.50)

Before the desserts, for those who need to have a plate of carbo. This is also from the Spring Menu. A mixed of sliced cabbage, capsicum, bean sprouts, onions, baby sardines, pieces of octopus all stir fried with a splash of Yakisoba sauce for sweetness.

Quite delicious, but a filling dish. If you prefer ramen, you can ask for it as a substitute. The pieces of octopus will be a reason to order this! Lucky for us, the octopus was done just nice!

Sushi Tei
Something that I did not really know was that most of the desserts served at Sushi Tei are all from Japan!

If you are a green tea person, try the Matcha Nama Ice Cream.
Let these small cylinder shape dessert melt in your mouth slowly. The flavour of the green tea is rather intense. It reminds me of Starbucks Green Tea Frappucino!

Sushi Tei
For those who love prefer chocolates. Very nice dark chocolate too.

Sushi Tei
Salt and Red Bean Ice Cream ($3.40)

If you have always had the Shio (Salt) ice cream from the regular menu, you might want to try this version from the Spring Menu. Red Bean has been added to the ice cream and it's quite a nice combination of taste.

Available now till 15 June at Sushi Tei island wide.
(Oops, I went there for lunch today and realised they have moved to the Summer Menu)

We had the tasting at:

Sushi Tei - Ngee Ann City

Since June this year, Sushi Tei has moved to Level 5 of the Podium Block of Ngee Ann City. No longer beside the taxi stand at the back of Takashimaya/Ngee Ann City. The new location is bigger and more spacious with private rooms as well.

And... it's still as popular as ever. It's one of the few branches of Sushi Tei that our family love to go. We have the Sushi Tei card, so we tend to come here for Japanese food now and then. This was a recent trip where we went with my in-laws.

Sushi Tei - Takashimaya
One of the things that we have been trying since being introduced during a tasting few months ago was this Ika Okura / Squid and Lady's Finger.  ($5.20)

It's gooey with crunchy squid and lady's finger. The mother-in-law was hesitant to try it but when she tried it, she loved it. ;-)

We also had Inari / Sweet Beancurd $2.20 that was placed in the same plate.

Sushi Tei - Takashimaya
This was the Tako Wasabi / Octopus with Wasabi. $5.20.
The colour looks a bit 'dull', but if you like octopus and wasabi, it's yummy. It gives you a rush in the head! Probably a cure if you have a stressful day.

Sushi Tei - Takashimaya
This was the sashimi platter from the Seasonal Menu. It's called Sashimi Moriawase "Kushida" (Kanpachi, Ootoro, Salmon, Nama Hotate). $36.

Look at how marbled the tuna was! Such a delight having them. We laughed because KopiKosongGirl's mum does not take sashimi. It comes with 3 pieces each, and we told Mum, luckily you don't eat, so we can have a slice each!

Sushi Tei - Takashimaya
We usually order the Sashimi Salad, but since we already have sashimi, we thought we would try the Yakiniku Salad. $10.

It's quite nice to have warm beef on salad. It's quite addictive too.

Sushi Tei - Takashimaya
The MIL felt like having Unagi, so we ordered the Phoenix Roll. $18.
We like having king prawns and unagi in our mouth together. It looks pretty too!

Sushi Tei - Takashimaya
DIL like yakitori, so this was the Jumbo Yakitori ($6.80).
This is what we say, it's yakitori 'lor...'.

Sushi Tei - Takashimaya
This was another thing that looked so pretty on the menu and sounded so nice, so KopiKosongGirl wanted to try it. Lobster Salad Roll. ($8.80). It did taste very good.

We also ordered the Asari Sakamushi (Asari Clams steamed with Japanese Sake). Not sure why I can't find the photos, maybe it's because we find that it used to taste better, but nowadays KopiKosongGirl says the amount of sake in it seems to be getting less potent.

We liked this new branch and so did the in-laws. It seems it is already quite popular with the crowds. If you go a bit earlier, you get to go in quite quickly without much wait. Send someone over to queue if you are going between 7-8pm :-)  The good thing is that since moving up to Level 5, we don't need to queue with the taxi fumes anymore!

Sushi Tei Yu Sheng @ Holland Village

The wife, also known as KopiKosongGirl says that she has her own tradition. She will do this without fail with her best friend she said. Visit Sushi Tei for Sushi Tei's Yu Sheng. She likes it because of the fresh and thick slices of sashimi on top of it.

I have been inducted into the ritual this year. I joined her with her friend.

Sushi Tei Yu Sheng

We had the Create Your Own, which had the "base" at $24.80, plus the sashimi you want at different prices. You can see the options at their facebook page. We had the combination of Salmon, Mekajiki and Hamachi which is an addition of $20.

We find it quite enjoyable and great tasting. The usual seaweed and various toppings that you see on their colourful plates on the conveyer belt is on this plate just without the rice. The dressing that's on their sashimi salad is also poured over this dish instead of oil. We find their combi of dressing and the sweet sauce suits our taste.

Sushi Tei Yu Sheng

Oh, the 'gold' is the salty tidbits we used to eat when we were younger!
It was only 3 of us, and we realise we need more manpower to mix the things up!

We also had a hot pot (that's seems to be getting smaller everytime we go) after our Yu Sheng. We were eating the Yu Sheng slowly while chatting and the service staff was walking serving others and also noticing us. It was only when we finished our Yu Sheng did they bring out the hot pot.

This was something I did that some of you might want to try. Add some wasabi into your Yu Sheng, it gives you a fiery twist! I like!

Oh yes, it's the last day today (6 Feb) for this Yu Sheng to be served, if you missed it, wait till next year.

Korean Food @ Sushi Tei, Holland Vilage

I met sis and momo for dinner at Sushi Tei. Instead of Japanese cuisine, we had Korean cuisines here instead!

I was late a few minutes for dinner because of the nasty jam. Sis and Momo was too hungry so they have ordered and started eating. They had finished the cold noodles, ala Korean. It's similar to the usual cold noodles - Hiyashi Chuka, but the Korean version had kimchi instead ($12). Quite tasty!

*** Kimchi and Tako Okonomiyaki. ***

Sushi Tei

The Korean pancakes! A slightly different style from the usual pancakes you get in Korean joints, sis the Korean pancake lover and also an okonomiyaki lover, adored it!

It's the Kimchi and Tako Okonomiyaki. $10. I enjoyed picking on the kimchi. Their kimchi here looks like what most of us like, not the overly fermented version.

*** Crunchy Tuna ***

Sushi Tei

This was a nice nibbling snack. It's called Crunchy Tuna. $9.

Tuna wrapped with seaweed dipped in some batter and deep fried. Looks like a simple recipe that you can replicate at home for the coming festivities.

*** Salmon and Pork Kimchi Nabe ***

Sushi Tei

This was our final order. The Salmon and Pork Kimchi Nabe. $22. It's similar to the usual various nabe we usually have here, but this had been 'korean-ised'.

We noticed they used a smaller pot which was a bit difficult to cook. The soup boils over and make a little mess. The pot they used for the normal nabe would have been better.

Salmon and Pork Kimchi Nabe

I took this with my camera phone. Sometimes camera phone takes clearer photos depending on the lighting. The kimchi was my favourite ingredient in the dish above. They had two soup bases to choose from and we opted for the spicy option. We finished every bit of it! There's a photo of the empty in the instagram I posted. :-)

Sushi Tei @ Paragon, Orchard Road

Most of my food posts are those eaten with friends / family. With more people you can order more varieties and taste all of them. But I know there are many people who are lone diners. This is one of the lone diner meals that is quite enjoyable and not that expensive too.

Another reason I came here was it was the last few days of September and if you are a sushi tei card member like me, you get 20% off. I just have to use it at least once for the discount since I paid for the card! LOL.

I tried the Tan Tan Don with Onsen Tamago. ($8)

Tan Tan Don with Onsen Tamago

It's spicy minced szechuan style over rice. (Something like 'dan dan mian')
It has a soft boiled egg on top. I like it because it is quick and tasty.

For those who have a bigger appetite, you can get a hand roll of something.
This is the soft shell crab handroll.

Soft Shell Crab Hand Roll

Just a suggestion idea for lone diners out there. I used to be a lone diner always thinking where to eat. Eating in food centres is warm sometimes. Food courts, you need to 'chope' seats, but being a lone diner, you worry about your stuff. So I walked into restaurants.

But most of the time, you don't want to spend too much, many Japanese places serves 'free' tea like this one. :-)

Sushi Tei @ Holland Village

We were about to go to our usual place for lunch when a more senior colleague whose nickname is 'Old Cat' said, 'not again'. Everyone looked at him and said, if you gonna treat, we will go wherever you want us to go. He looked at us and smiled and said 'Sure!'.

We picked Sushi Tei, because:
1) We had a discount card for that place.
2) Weather is too hot and there's air-con there.
3) It's convenient, just a short bus ride away.
4) We know that 'old cat' loves Japanese food, so he won't say no.
5) They don't charge for Japanese tea. (while other places charge even for tap water!!)

We started with the usual plates from the kaiten / conveyor belt. We were hungry and grab so many plates!
Then we each had our own meal.

"Jiao Shou Fu Ren" had the Chirashi Don. I think that's her usual meal here.

Chirashi Don

'Old Cat' had the Negitoro Don. (Minced Tuna with quail egg rice). I think this is also his usual order.

Negitoro Don (Minced Tuna with raw quail egg on rice)

'Old Cat' is one that loves Natto. The sticky "cobweb stringy" fermented beans. These are rich in Vitamin K-2 and B-12. Yes, the cat loves tuna!

Maguro Natto (Tuna Natto)

Almond jelly loves her ramen. She orders ramen almost all the time.

Miso Ramen

Owet had the Kaisen Tan Tan Ramen.

I had the Yakiniku Don this time. (instead of the usual cold noodles - hiyashi soba)

Yakiniku Don

We enjoyed our meal as usual. I guess it was because of the company. We would be eating, chatting and laughing away.

Sushi Tei @ Holland Village

It has been a long time since we ate at Sushi Tei at Holland Village. They have moved to the 'windmill building' for sometime and I have not gone into this new location.

What made us eat here? I had a $10 sushi tei voucher that was expiring on 28 Feb, so that very last day, we had dinner there. The queue was so so long!

Some photos of the food we ate:
The days and nights are so warm, so I am eating the cold ramen - Hiyashi Chuka.  I love the fresh crab inside. (Oops, hidden behind in this photo)

Sushi Tei

My cousin loves the chirashi.

Sushi Tei

Shall not bore you all with the same food photos. (We tend to always order the same old things!)
Here's something different to post.

Their current promotion is the Oyster Hot Pot. We saw the photos on the menu and we were tempted.  Quite a lot of oysters too!  I think it was around 10 of it or more at $20.

Sushi Tei

It's the Miso Soup Base, which means it's very salty but very satisfying too. ;-)

Sushi Tei

These oysters have the kind of taste as dried oysters though. So if you like that kind of taste, you would probably like this. (the kind that you have in Chinese Oyster Rice)

Sushi Tei

Could not resist not posting another photo. Assortment of sashimi sushi.
These were delicious!

Sushi Tei @ Paragon

Sometimes I wonder if I reveal too much as I jot down our eating adventures on this online diary. But it seems everyone loves to read other people's diary? Anyway, I don't reveal our faces and names, so there's still some anonymity. But everyone knows sis and bro-in-law is back. LOL..

Anyway...
Since our sis and BIL are only here for 3 days, sis is busy meeting up with friends, doing manicures and pedicures, having her hair cut etc. (She says it is the same price, different currency.)

Momo and I met up with them for dinner after their tea and shopping with friends. Sis and BIL said they want Japanese food when we texted them what they would like for dinner. The city in UK where they live only has 1 'urrgh so so' Japanese restaurant. We thought of Sushi Tei because it's my birthday month and I get 20% off with the Sushi Tei card. (haha.. why not right? and No, this is not a free meal from Sushi Tei. We paid for it.)

This is what they picked that they missed. Jellyfish! They missed their jellyfish.

Jelly Fish

Scallops! There was so many kinds on the menu, they asked which is nice? We told them this is nice, and we ordered one for each person. I just love the salty mayo like thingy on it.

Scallops

Soft shell crabs. Crabs again! Sometimes you don't know what your siblings like to eat until you start documenting them. I realise both my sisters loves crabs. I never knew it. Guess what? I recently realise I can 'bribe' them with crabs.

Me: Xiao mei, can you help me run this errand? Please...
Sis: Don't want lah. So far away..
Me: I will treat you to a crab meal lah. Can?
Sis: Hmm... You say one ah. Crab meal. Ok lah!
Don't laugh! It works!

Soft Shell Crabs

Sashimi Salad, we had it with the Sesame dressing. Sometimes veggies can taste so good. ;-)

Sashimi Salad

The Miso hot pot! We like this so we thought they will like it too.
Yup, they liked it. With all the seafood inside, of course it is tasty. We found out what seafood that our BIL can't eat. Noted.

Spicy Seafood Hot Pot

Oh, the Sushi Tei in Paragon has moved to a new location. It is now much bigger and nicer too! It's at the new wing of Paragon now. As we were seated at a darker, an area with soft lighting, the food photo is 'dark'-ish. :-)
