Standing Sushi Bar @ OUB Centre, Raffles Place

Note: Today's post has been brought to you courtesy of Standard Chartered Bank.

This was a meal last night at "Standing Sushi Bar". What an unique name isn't it? When I first heard of this place a few months ago, I was thinking: "Hmm, do you have to stand and eat?" A few people that I follow on Twitter has been raving about this place! So when I was presented the opportunity to come for a free meal, I said yes!

Hey, is that face familiar? That's Howard from "Eye for a Guy 2". Yes, that show's ancient, it's like 3 years ago. Guess what? Howard's now the boss of Standing Sushi Bar. The two fish beside Howard is Barry and Fin. If you watch TV, you would have seen the two fish from the Standard Chartered Bank commercial.

Howard with Barry and Fin

Why Standing Sushi Bar? I was told there's no chairs during lunch time. It's a new concept of quickly grabbing something to eat and to mingle around. For dinner hours, the chairs will mysteriously appear though.

We got here and were kinda overwhelmed by what to order, so we asked Howard to order for us. He would know what's good right? He told us that their fish is flown in fresh daily from Japan and some other countries.

So what did Howard order for us? This is the Chef's Special, our sashimi platter. $25. Oh, we were impressed. Even for our untrained tongue, we can know the difference. There's just freshness that you can taste. I especially love the scallops!

Chefs Platter

Next, we each had a platter of 5 different Nigiri Sushi.
(Maguro $2, Sake Toro $2, Hamachi $4, Aburi Hotate $4, Shime Saba $3.)

What you see below is the end where the Shime Saba is. We are to eat from the other side to this side. The reason? So you will appreciate it more by gradually eating from the lighter taste to the stronger taste fish. I like the Aburi Hotate (Scallops) and Saba (Mackerel) the most.

Howard's Special - Maguro, Sake Toro, Hamachi, Aburi Hotate, Shime Saba

Oh, does the next photo look so so wrong? You know why Barry and Fin were so scared in the commercial? They feared they will be next on the plate! Oh, the look at their faces while holding our Nigiri sushi. Is that a relief face that they are still alive?

Barry and Fin with Howard's Special

Next was the best Nigiri we had. The eel we usually eat is fresh water eel (unagi). But this is salt water eel (Anago). You know how usually salt water fish taste better than fresh water fish? The same for eels! You should order this and try! It's $6 a pop, but you should try it once right?

We had trouble trying to remember all 6 names of the Nigiri, so we told Howard, can we call this the "Howard Set"? So when customers who visit after reading our blogs asks for the "Howard Set", you know exactly what they want? ;-P

Anago

Next is something new and maybe never to be replicated again at Standing Sushi Bar.
It's a vegetarian sushi that I think was not in the menu. It was created because of Barry and Fin who keep telling the rest of us "fish are friends, not food".

Sushi - Vegetarian

The next dish is for mushrooms lovers. Mix Kinoko Foil Yaki, $10.
3 kinds of mushroom and some special sauce. I like the Shitake more than the Enoki and Shimeji. The chef simply refuse to let us know what sauce! Trade secret he insists!

Mix Kinoko Foil Yaki

This is Salmon Yuzu Yama-mayo yaki, $15
This was a shared item, but the rest did not seem to touch it, so I ate almost all of it! The salmon's not overdone and the sauce tangerine vinaigrette makes it so appetizing.

Salmon Yuzu Yama-mayo yaki

Agedashi Tofu, $5
If you have followed my food diary, you know I am not a fan of almost all kinds of tofu. Everyone else says its nice though. ;-)

Agedashi Tofu

This is Tamago Nigiri, $6.
A formation like this reminds me of Marina Bay Sands' 3 Towers!

Tamago Nigiri

Fin's went hiding again, because he saw Shishamo Age, $8 being served.
Fin, you got to live with it. Don't be a scary cat. (fish i mean). You are the 'star' of the commercial, so you won't get to die yet. haha...

Shishamo age

This is Yoshinogawa Gensen Karakuchi, $8
Not mine, but Claudia from 24seven had this. A soft acidity and light taste sake from Niigata with 15.5% alcohol!

Yoshinogawa Gensen Karakuchi

We ate more things but I think it's photo overload if I post all of them here.

So, after dinner, Barry and Fin paid for our meal with a Standard Chartered Credit Card.
You can see that they are still in shock, so many of cousins died for the sake of hungry food bloggers!

Fei Siong Seafood @ Lorong Kilat

This was a quick lunch with aunt. Think we were either tempted or coerced into ordering more.We had wanted to just order a hor fun and a mee goreng that's all.

But we were tempted by the Hor Fun Special. Sea Cucumber, Prawns, Scallops, Mushrooms with Hor Fun. Think we tried this a month ago.

Hor Fun Special

The Mee Goreng this time was not so spicy. But it is still quite delicious.
Full of ingredients and also vegetables.

Mee Goreng

Other than sharing the two "noodley" dishes, we had a meat dish. Prawn Paste Chicken.
We thought it will be a small portion, but it came with a 8 piece chicken wings.

Prawn Paste Chicken

We definitely overate. A 3 person portion eaten by 2 person. ;-O
Think it was $28 in total.

Lao Beijing @ Tiong Bahru Plaza

We were suppose to have a Care Group meeting, but at the last minute, (1.5 hours before our usual meeting time,) we realise so many people could not make it. Since only 4 could make it, and we end up meeting for dinner instead. We treated it as a belated birthday treat for sis.

We found ourselves walking into Lao Beijing at Tiong Bahru. Somehow we ended up here, we have not been to Tiong Bahru Plaza for the longest time.

We were promptly seated and this little plate of pickled cucumber was served. Pickled cucumber always taste nice isn't it? The water content extracted by salt and it becomes crunchy and appetizing.

Cucumber Pickles

Yes, we know LBJ's  famous dishes includes many deep fried stuff and also Peking Duck, we did not have those. We tried to pick the healthier options. You think it's possible? Probably. ;-p

Sliced Pork with garlic sauce.
We all liked this appetizer dish. Their garlic sauce is nice and this is mostly lean pork, so it's healthier right?

Sliced Pork with Garlic Sauce

We had a soup too. Healthy Soup too.
Some of you might have seen the Sakura Chicken with Cordyceps being sold in some fairprice outlets. We decided to try the prepared version here instead.

Oooo. The soup's nice. Double boiled soup is usually nice right? You should try it if you visit them. There was also some jellied stuff inside the soup. Might be fish maw. We did not ask ;-)

Double Boiled Sakura Chicken Soup

Sis wanted the Xiao Long Bao, so had one steamer of it.
The XLB here is ok lah. It was nice but there was not much 'liquid' inside, so there's no 'fun' of breaking it and seeing the liquid flow out. :-)

Xiao Long Bao

We were tempted by the server asking us if we wanted their signature Peking Duck (no, it's eating skin), their Beijing Style Sweet and Sour Fish (no, it's deep fried), etc... (we had self control eh?)

So we settled for a chicken dish instead. We tried the spiciest of all the chicken dishes. Can't remember the name, but this dish has lots of red and green chillies with diced chicken. Chilli is suppose to help you loose weight right? It was fiery but nice though.

Spicy Chicken

We had also their home made signature braised bean curd dish.
Not too bad too. I think also everyone's tofu dishes taste almost similar, and can't get any more special. (Do you think so too?)

Specialty Braised Beancurd

This is something funny. We know this is a Beijing style restaurant and when we tried to order a veg dish, we asked for something totally un-Beijing. We asked if they had Fan Su Ye. They must have been trained well. They politely replied that Fan Su Ye's more of a local vegetable dish and it's not on the menu and quickly offered to ask us to try some of the Beijing style vegetable dishes without making you feel 'silly'.

So we had the black fungus with lily bulbs with seasonal veg dish.
Black Fungus lowers cholesterol, lily bulbs supposedly good for the lungs, esp if you are coughing.

Sautéed Black Fungus with Lily Bulbs and Seasonal Greens

That's our healthier selection of food. Was it healthy? Comparably healthier than if we ordered other dishes.

But we were surprised when we paid the bill though. We paid with the Standard Chartered card and got 15% off for spending a certain amount. We also got vouchers that's equivalent to our spending amount! Many places are doing this right? Enticing you to come back again.

(Haha if this sounds as if it's paid advertorial, no, it's not, we paid for the meal ourselves. The bill was around $120, but ended up paying around $100 and we got $100 vouchers!)

We paid using a Standard Chartered Card, so at the end of the month, we are expecting to get a 15% rebate in our bill! You must seen the Big Fish and Small Fish advert on TV right? So we thought it was a rather nice discount. 15% + 15% off, plus equivalent dining vouchers. The first meal will be 'technically' free if we come back and use the vouchers.
