Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upper Bukit Timah Road

This is one of the many places our family will go for dinner on weekends.
It happens to be the first the 'new wife' would be eating here with us after we got married.

It's just the usual weekend zhi-char food outdoors sitting under a tent that's below a big huge tree! Super kampung!

As usual, the food here is nice, cheap but totally un-presentable! This place is about cheap good food and not presentation. :-)

Stir Fried Veggies

The veggie dish. It's a little oily, but taste wise it's good.
Slight crunch to the veg, but ugly looking dish!

Tofu Dish

Their tofu dish was nice. Try the tofu if you are here. They deep fried the tofu which has a nice charred smell and taste, but the inside of the tofu was still very soft.

The sauce looks clear, but it's very flavourful. Great with the plain rice.

Egg Omelette with Oysters

This is the fried egg with little oysters dish. Partially covered with sweetish chilli sauce that's very addictive!

If you like your fried eggs and you like sauce, this is for you.
If you are on a diet, flee! It's sinful!

Herbal Chicken

The herbal chicken that's only available on weekends and only a few are prepared.
We managed to get it because we were there early.

Their herbal chicken was yummy. The viscosity of the soup is about right. Not too light or thick.
Lots of the herbs that gives it a messy look below, but the taste was good!

Side note:
I used to like to order herbal chicken in many places, but whenever I think of plastic at high temperature and I give it a second thought and don't order it. Since I have not had it for a long time, it is someone else who ordered it, and I missed it, just makan lah!

Salted Baked Crabs

This crab dish was the highlight of the night! We all think it's super nice! It's their Salt Baked Crabs!
If you are getting tired of black pepper or chilli crabs, try their salt baked crabs!

The shell is salty (but of course!), but the flesh of the crabs are not that salty. It had the baked fragrance to it. You  know the smell of the crab shell that has been heated at high temperature. It smells quite good!

Who can resist fresh crabs?

Salted Baked Crabs

For lovers of crab roe, (ie the wife and the many ladies at home), it's heaven!
See the bright orange colour of the roe!

Salted Baked Crabs

The shell is what the wife goes for usually! This one made her smile with the roe there.
Good thing I am not one who likes it a lot! There's no fighting for crab roe!

The crabs are about $100 for two of it. (sold by weight and market prices)
They are quite huge and we were really satisfied!

Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upper Bukit Timah Road

Every now and then, you think of the places you have not visited in a while.
Ga-Hock was suddenly in our aunt's mind, so we paid Ga-Hock a visit.

A note to all, if you are visiting this place say on a Sunday night, plan to have an early dinner! If you arrive around 6 pm, you will probably only get to eat around 6:45 pm! It's a good time to catch up with family members over what has happened during the week. Or if you prefer play games on your phone or bring a book! :-)

***

We did not feel like crabbing, so we had the Curry Fish Head. $19.

Curry Fish Head

Just in case you are wondering where is the fish?
It's hidden below the crispy fried beancurd skin.

Let me warn you, the curry has lots of fine chilli seeds. The fish was fresh and the curry was good on rice.
It is great for a "detox" session if you need one. LOL...

We wanted Venison, but it was not available, so it was substituted with beef.
The beef with spring onions. $10 Nothing really spectacular.

***

The white bait omelette. $6
A very simple tasty and homely dish.

We did have a laugh when we saw the translation on the menu.
The Chinese words are 'yun yu dan'. They literally translate it! They called it silverfish omelette.
Hey, would you want to eat silverfish? Those pest/bugs that infest your old books?!

Eggs with Silver Bait

This was the mince meat brinjal. $7.
Another homely kind of dish that I like. It would be better if they were less generous with their oil! :-p

Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upper Bukit Timah Road

We are back at Ga-Hock after a long long time. It's a place that needs great patience. Come early around 6 plus if you want to get your food fast. After the crowds builds up, you might need to wait around 45 mins for your food to come. Everyone that comes here is well prepared for waiting!

That is why the Satay stall here is doing brisk business. Hungry people will be having satay first. We did, but only 2 sticks each, so that we wont be feeling full even before dinner.

The first dish to arrive was the tofu and seafood dish. Looking at the receipt, the name of this dish is 4 Treasure Tofu. $14.

Mixed Vegetables

Then we had the roast chicken! $20

So that photos are not so boring, my cousin is posing her fingers today. Ouch, the chicken bit me!
The chicken is nice by the way.

Roast Chicken

We also had chilli crabs. It was quite a huge crab. Who can resist chilli crabs?  It was $42 for this huge crab. Dip the sauce with fried mantous.

Chilli Crabs

Our cousin is daddy's girl. The claw all peel for her. She just needs to put it in her mouth. :-)

Crab Claws peeled by her daddy

Oh, this is one super spicy la la!
Curry leaves and sambal is a potent mix. It's so good though. It's very fragrant with the curry leaves and sambal makes you break out sweat. $15.

Spicy Sambal Clams

If you are willing to wait, here's one place that you can get value for money food. ;-)
Oh yes, sit far far away from the Satay stall too! If not, you will be breathing in lots of smoke!

Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upper Bukit Timah Road

Aunt was telling us the other day that it has been a very long time since we went to Ga-Hock for dinner and suggest we visit that place again. So we went there last week.

We thought we would beat the crowd by going early. We went around 630pm and (wah!) we found that place is almost full! Is everything thinking the same? (ie, thinking that going early, we will get a place to sit.)

Just like many tables here, we had the Curry Fish Head. Yes, the one that has all the fried bean curd skin covering it.

Curry Fish Head

It's a huge fish head! We like it. The curry was very satisfying!
(hey, our bro in UK, we thought of you while we ate this! Your favourite curry! We were waiting for you to slurp it dry!)

Curry Fish Head

We asked the lady server to recommend what's popular for the day and she recommended Mongolian Ribs. It turned out quite tasty! The ribs are crispy and yet it's soft inside. The mayo sauce is also nice but a bit fattening. ;-)

Mongolian Spare Ribs

She also recommended the Sambal Oyster Omelette. Can you imagine the 'pedas' taste? Nice!

Sambal Oyster Omelette

The Spicy Hua La.
We love this too. Big and succulent clams.

Sambal Hua La

The veg dish. Fried Nai Bai.

Stir Fried Nai Bai

We always enjoy the food here. It's one of those delicious places where the prices are on the cheaper side yet the food's nice and portions generous.

Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upper Bukit Timah Road

It has been some time since our family came to Ga-Hock Seafood. It's one of the Zhi Char places that is quite 'economical', especially if you have a whole clan to feed. LOL..

This was Sunday night's dinner. If you are coming here, it's recommended that you call them and book first. The queue might be very long if you don't. It's famous for its crabs, but we were not interested in crabs that night. :-)

Here's our dinner:
A big claypot of Curry Fish Head. It's my bro and my favourite. The sauce just keeps us going. :-) That's deep fried "tau kee" (soy bean) skin above.

Curry Fish Head

The shrimp paste chicken. It's a bit overdone tonight though.

Shrimp Paste Chicken wings

The "Pai Ku Wang" / Pork Ribs King. I like this.

Pork Ribs King

Veg dish. I realise aunt's sis did not ask for lard this time. Hmm. Aunt's sis loves lard pieces and yet is so so so super skinny. (some people are born with special genes i guess)

Veggies...

One big huge omelette.
We have 4 kids around, so the above few are the not so spicy dishes for them.

Omelette

The adults enjoy their spicy veg. The sambal "Fan Su Ye". (Sweet potato leaves)

Sambal Han Zi Hio

Another dish for the adults, sambal sotong. Nicely done, not rubbery at all. :-)

Sambal Sotong

I mentioned economical. The above dishes, all quite decent sized dishes, fed 7 adults and 4 kids and it costs $87.70.

Very satisfying dinner.

Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upp Bukit Timah Road

We last came here in June, and we are back again. It was our Sunday night family dinner. With 9 of us, this is a very economical place to eat and the food's good too.

This time Aunt and her sis ordered the following to feed us. :-)
Roast chicken. Juicy and tender. With kids around, they always love it. We notice that kids love to squeeze the lime over food. If you let them do it, you can see a big smile after they are done with it. It's like a great accomplishment for the little ones!

This is braised pork ribs. It was delicious. The meat was so soft and the sauce is delicious and addictive. You add some sauce to your rice and you can wallop half a bowl of rice kind. haha.. It's a tad oily though. Eating it once in a while is nice.

One of the favourites that people order here. Long beans with crispy 'hae bee'. (dried shrimps). You will love to nibble on the hae bee. It's addictive.

Aunt's sis, a super skinny lady had the urge to eat pork crispees! So she asked them to add them in. Look at the big piece they gave her. We save it all for her and her alone. LOL

This is a vegetarian dish. They have a fanciful chinese name for it, when translated sounds like multiple mushroom with vegetables.

It was good. All the veg have been braised till its super soft, including the carrots you see. There are various types of mushroom as well.

This is the cereal prawns. So so lah.

This is wonderful. The sambal kangkong. It smell so so good the moment it was served, a hint of the wok char, spicy enough and taste wonderful to the tongue.

All of the above, you pass the 2 $50 notes, you still get a $5 change. ;-)

If you have lots of time, eat their crabs. It's one of their popular dishes there. We did not have the mood to eat crabs when we went there, but as everyone ordered, we saw the crabs being prepared, we also wanted some. Aunt said next week she will prepare it for us at her home! (yey....)

Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upp Bukit Timah Road

Last weekend, uncle and aunt brought us all to eat at this place that many people are flocking too. It's far off, but not too far from where they live.

During peak hours, you got to wait for some time, but if you go earlier or later, it might not be that bad. So, what's the attraction? The food's reasonably good and it is reasonably cheap. You know eating out nowadays can be so unsatisfying (small portions) and yet so expensive.

Tuck along this coffee shop called Hup Choon Eating House along Upper Bukit Timah Road, there's a zhi-char stall.

It's called Ga-Hock Seafood. You need to go to the back of the Eating House. You will be amazed by how many people are there! (Where we sat was open air, so the food photos are a bit blur, due to insufficient lighting)

We had 9 of us (three children), and this is what we ate:
Sweet and Sour Pork, nicely done, and portions big too. $14

This is the prawn paste chicken. $12.
It's kinda like well fried outside, but inside it is still juicy.

Almost all the table here as the Curry Fish Head. $19.
Served on a big claypot, the sauce is so captivating, if you like curry, you will definitely ask for more rice, so you can wallop the curry! haha.. It is topped with yummy fried bean curd skin.

This is the seafood mix with veg and tofu. $18.
The tofu's not too bad.

This is the long beans with dried shrimps. $10.
We can taste 'salted fish' bits in it too. With 'hae bee' (dried shrimps) and salted fish, you can imagine how fragrant it is!

The sambal kangkong ($7) is also delicious. Yes, with the 'woke hei'.
Hey, even the kids found it yummy, thought it is a bit spicy for them.

Yup, a new discovery for the rest of us, thanks to aunt's recommendation. (Or aunt's gang of friends)

Oh yes, it only accepts cash. So if you are coming remember to bring cash.
