Kim's Family Korean Restaurant @ West Coast CC

Colleagues and I just discovered that Kim's Family Korean Restaurant has a 3rd branch.

We used to visit the Lorong Kilat / Bukit Timah branch. Recently, we heard they have opened a branch at Sunset Way but we have not tried it yet. Few days ago, we saw this new branch when we went to West Coast Plaza to have lunch.

Our lunch plan changed when we saw the new branch. Images of banchans filled our disillusioned minds. We walked over from West Coast Plaza to the Community Centre!

This branch looks really nice from the outside! There's an outdoor area that should be nice in the evenings. Look, evergreen fake grass too!

Banchans

The reason we suddenly decided to eat there. Their selection and varieties of banchans!
We liked most of it. They were tasty and nice, but I think we keep thinking about it that we expect more (that we were served)!

Ramen

Two colleagues had the Ramen at $10 each.
Comment from the two colleagues that ate it was there are lots of seafood inside, but the "lalas" are quite small.

JajangMyun

Another colleague had the Jajangmyun $15.
She seemed to like it. She loves all things Korean. (All our colleagues know that hehe)

Jajang Bap

I also had almost the same thing. I had Jajang Bap. $15.
I felt like eating rice so I had the rice option. It was served with a fried egg.

I have always wondered why the Korean actors and actresses always slurp it like it's the world's best food. It's black and gooey and does not look appetising at all. LOL

But I ate it all because it becomes more tasty as you eat it! There was bits of meat (the 3 layered fatty pork version), potatoes cubes, lots of onions (which I like) and all cooked in bean sauce.

Oysters Soup

Old cat, our colleague ordered the Oysters Soup. $17.
Pricey for a soup (and a bowl of rice) but there was lots of small pieces of oysters in it. Yes, small ones, but there was quite a lot of it. Soup was tasty too.
(We all could not help not dipping our spoons in his soup!)

Bill

A little pricey we know.
The place seems to be very quite too. There was only 2 tables eating.
I also just found out they have been around here for a few weeks.

Kim's Family Food Restaurant @ Lorong Kilat

It has been some time since we went to Kim's Family. We have been wanting to go since we knew they had expanded. Sis and I decided to pay them a visit about a week ago.

Nude Kimbap

Kim's Family Restaurant

When we got there, we saw on the board outside, a Today's Special advert. That night's special was called Nude Kimbap ($15) and there were only 15 sets available. Out of curiosity, we ordered it. (Ya, we thought it's a bit expensive)

Kim (dried seaweed) bap (rice) when they have a nude word in front of it means it's inside out. You can see from the photo that it's quite messy but somehow, it tasted rather good. It was warm to start with, and with lots of mayo on it, it was moist and tasty. Inside it were hidden crunchy bits of dried seafood. It was rather unusual, but those bits that sis and crispy fried shrimps tasted rather nice.

If you are bored sitting in front of the PC/Mac now, you can view this you-tube of how these 2 Korean girls made kimbap. Although it's in Korean and I don't understand that language, I think it's hilarious! The link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UckzXKVxqTk

The Banchan

Kim's Family Restaurant

The 'secret' reason why sis and I visited this place. The huge variety of banchan that they serve!
We got served 13 this time. Oh these mini bowls of joy!

Some are nice, some requires you to have acquired taste, but we did not waste any but finished them all! (or rather, I finished the ones that sis did not want)

Samgyetang

Kim's Family Restaurant

I love Korean Ginseng Chicken Soup, so I ordered this to share. I have always enjoyed their soup here. You will find that it taste bland. The salt has been left out in the cooking process. The salt's served on the side.

I had a Korean reader emailed me once and told me that the salt's not suppose to be added into the soup. That's how her family have it since she was growing up. The salt on the side is for dipping the chicken meat when you eat it.

So out of curiosity, I have been having Korean chicken soup in many places since I got that email some weeks ago. I will always pretend I don't know anything and ask how should I eat it.

The answer I got, if you like the soup salty, just add the salt into the soup! If not, then drink it without salt. The chicken is bland, so when you eat it and prefer more tasty meat, you can dip it to the little saucer of salt. So I concluded that it all depends on how a particular Korean family eats it at home. ;-) Have it your way!

I had the soup without salt, but dipped the chicken with a tiny bit of salt while eating as suggested by the reader. It does taste different.

Ddukppoki

Kim's Family Restaurant

My sis has always loved Korean rice cakes. It has become a 'must order' when I dine with her at Korean restaurants.

I always find their version having more other ingredients than rice cakes. For rice cakes lovers, you might only find a few pieces of rice cakes, they have lots of flat fish cakes inside.

It worked because I like the fish cakes more than rice cakes, and sis like rice cakes instead of the fish cakes.

Persimmon tea

Kim's Family Restaurant

Cold cinnamon tea at the end of the meal to give you a 'jolt'. I am not a fan of this tea, because when I drink it, it literally gives me a jolt. It's cold and the taste of persimmon and my glossopharyngeal nerves aren't the best of friends. It nerves tells my brain something and I will get this chilling 'urrgh' sensation. It is not really my cup of tea. LOL

I know there are many of you who loves it. I think Dad would like it, he loves persimmons.

Oranges

Kim's Family Restaurant

Some ascorbic acid to end the meal. It was quite sweet and we literally ended the meal with a sweet note.

Kim's Family Restaurant @ Lorong Kilat

This was our lunch on the day that Bukit Timah flooded!

One colleague wanted to have Korean Food for lunch. Why? Our boss came back from his vacation from Korea and brought us lots of goodies like the Jeju Island Chocolates, Seaweeds and Ginseng Sweets, etc. Ya, with that we were tempted to have Korean for lunch!

Our first thought was Sarang at Science Park, but we thought that we might not be in the mood for high end high price dining today. So we thought it's cheaper to take a cab and head to Lorong Kilat and eat delicious home style Korean food instead. :-)

One of the reasons for coming here... The selection of side dishes!

Galore of Side dishes

We discovered they have new sides as well! We like them all, all 12 of them!

Galore of Side dishes

One of our favourites is the Pork Bulgogi. Even Korean food has 'wok hei'! The fragrant and spicy Pork Strips is so yummy!

Spicy Pork Bulgogi

The same colleague who like the instant noodles from the Hong Kong shop the other day likes Korean style Instant Noodles too. OK, we all got convinced instant noodles cooked by restaurants does taste a bit different.

Instant Noodles Soup

Spicy Rice Cakes. Something we always order. Today the chef decided not to make it as spicy which is good for us.

Spicy Rice Cakes

For our hard work in the office that's draining us of all our energy, we decided we should nourish ourselves with Ginseng Chicken Soup!

Ginseng Chicken Soup

Our beef soup lover colleague says he needs this. OK, we ordered it for his sake.
Spicy Beef Soup. Lots of ingredients too!

Spicy Beef Soup

This is one place that we always enjoy coming to 'pig out'. We did pig out by having ice cream two or three doors away! We were stuffed and there's always a spare space in the stomach for ice cream. :-)

Kim's Family Restaurant @ Lorong Kilat

Remember last week when I had Kim's Family Food twice. On the 7th day after the 1st time there, I was back there, but this time for lunch. Colleagues who was captivated by the side dishes that I mentioned to them says we should go. LOL...

Wire drove to work that day so that we can drive all the way here to eat. They were not disappointed when the side dishes arrived. 9 different types came. We realize this place must be side dishes haven. A few dishes here was different from the 2 times I was here. They even have luncheon meat with eggs! Old Cat is a luncheon meat lover, so he grabbed it the moment I took a photo of it. (I was given like 5 seconds to take haha)

Galore of side dishes

Then they surprised us by bringing in more. The fish that I like! ;-)

Fish Side Dish

As usual, I am not the person who orders the food. Everyone just picks a dish. Without fail, everytime I am here, there's someone I am eating with who like Korean Rice Cakes!

Korean Rice Cake

It's a soupy day today. We had 3 types of soup. I only took picture of two of it. We were too busy eating. This is the Dried Pollack Soup.

Pollack Soup

The Spicy Tofu Soup. It's bubbling non stop!
Like all soups here, they are not salted, so they provide table salt for you to add it yourself.

I think all the soup's too spicy for me. My first mouth and I was nearly choked. Maybe I was too greedy, drinking it too fast?

Tofu Soup

Our favourite for the day was the Spicy Pork Bulgogi.
It just makes you want to have more of it!

Pork Bulgogi

Kimchi pan cakes again.

Kimchi Pan Cake

Not sure if it's only a lunch thing. After we were done, they gave us this cold persimmon. Lovely. We had watermelons too.

Persimmon Tea

Think colleagues were really happy to eat here.
We read from the newspaper last week that the Korean place few shops away has nice fried chicken. Maybe that might be our next destination. ;-)

Kim's Family Restaurant (again!) @ Lorong Kilat

Guess what? The next day I went back to the same place for dinner! This time with Momo and my sis. Told them that they served us so many side dishes and they were so tasty. To prove it, had to bring them there. hehe...

This time we know not to order so much. But we still over ordered because we were tempted by the things on the menu.

See, there were like 9 items as side dishes. They are mostly different from the ones I had the night before. I like this place because of this little plates of tasty stuff! Sis and Momo particularly like the sweet potato. I like the kimchi salad and seaweed.

9 sides dishes...

We shared the dishes this time. We thought we would order 3 things. But no, we ended up ordering 4. Because the girls wanted to try so many things.

We ordered the Ginseng Chicken Soup. The soup's not salted, but they give you the salt for you to add. We did not add the salt. We preferred the taste of it as it is. It was nice. The chicken's stuffed with glutinous rice. It has lots of ingredients too, which made it taste rather good. It's one whole small chicken inside!

Ginseng Chicken Soup

The girl's favourite. Korean Rice Cakes. Spicy & Sweetish and Chewy!
Told them not to have the ones with ramen (refer to yesterday's post) or it will be too much food! This size is just nice.

Korean Rice Cakes

I realise many many ladies like to eat pancakes eh?
This is the kimchi pancakes. The ladies like it, my tongue's not tuned for pancakes. LOL.. But I still ate a few pieces of it because I like the kimchi. :-p

Kimchi Pan Cakes

Korean drama addicts (like us) will always see Jajangmyeon being the actor and actresses favourite food. We thought we will order it to try.

Of all the many we have tried, we think this is one of the nicer ones.
But it's very very very black! The potatoes, onions, etc are all black!

Jajangmyeon

For those who asked yesterday how much it is, the above, Pancakes $10, Rice Cakes $6, Black Beanpaste Noodles $10, Chicken Soup $17.

If you ask me what I like, it's the sides. I think it's because I like to pick and nibble bits of food. I have yet to try the BBQ meats.

Note: If you are going elsewhere after the meal, you might want to consider elsewhere to eat. Many people will be ordering the BBQ meats and the whole place smells of delicious BBQ. You will smell really really oily.

Kim's Family Restaurant @ Lorong Kilat

Last Friday, our care group from church thought we will eat something different. So we decided we will try out the shops at Lorong Kilat. A friend has told us that this place has a wide selection of side dishes, you will be so amazed!

The place is managed by Koreans. Husband and wife and their two kids. You see lots of Koreans living nearby coming in here and it gets very packed. A little wait is usually worth it!

Kim's Family Food @ Lorong Kilat

See the array of side dishes? We were given 9 different kinds and they are really really delicious! There's even a fish. The fish is very tasty too.

Array of side dishes

There was only 4 of us that could make it for dinner. We thought we would make it easier by ordering individual dishes for ourselves.

Here's what I had. Beef Slices Stew. I like the stew. Piping hot in the hot stone. There's quite a lot of beef and lots of ingredients as well! Below the beef and vegetables are thick 'tang hoon' noodles. I had it with rice and it was really satisfying!

Beef Slices Soup

Mrs DG had the seafood ramen soup. What a huge bowl she exclaimed.

Seafood Ramen Soup

Mr DG had the Korean Rice Cakes and Ramen combo. It's nice and also the portion's too big!
The rice cakes with the side dishes would have made you full. He left most of the ramen behind.

Rice Cake and Ramen Combo

Mr AQ had the Ox Tail Stew. He seems to have enjoyed his stew very much!
(I am not an oxtail person. hehe..)

Ox Tail Stew

It was a good dinner. Mr and Mrs DG just came back from a trip to Seoul and they said the places they ate did not gave so many side dishes. The portions here are as big as the ones in Seoul though.

Korean food in Singapore is not usually very cheap, but the prices here are quite ok. With the portions that they give, and the amount of ingredients that you can see they put in, it's quite worth it.
