Joe's Kitchen @ Alexandra Village.

Last Friday, a colleague suggested that we pop by Joe's Kitchen. Some of us have been there, while the rest have not. So, we hopped into a cab to get there.

Here's what we had. The crispy chicken wings. One for each of us.

The prawn cakes. I kinda like this. Think it just taste good, especially with the sweet thai chilli sauce.

We had 5 of us, and we shared the food by ordering ala-carte dishes. Here's the Phad Thai. We liked it.

This is another dish that we liked very much. The kangkong. Really yummy and fragrant.

We wanted some Tomyam Soup and we were recommended the Seafood Tomyam. It was fiery! One colleague particularly like it so much. haha...

We also had a green beef curry. The photo is totally spoilt. Oops. Anyway, we had the above dishes with a pineapple rice.

For the 7 dishes plus drinks, we split to the bill to around $12 each. Think we ate too much because we were trying to hard to stay awake to work later. ;-)

Free Ice Cream by OCBC @ Orchard Road

No, this post is NOT sponsored by OCBC. (But I am just happy with them for giving us free ice cream today and there was no strings attached! ;-) )

Momo, Sis and I, we were walking along Orchard Road this afternoon when this lady with a few guys said free ice cream if you are an OCBC card member. Show them any OCBC card and you get a little slip like this in exchange for free ice cream.

You know the 'potong' ice cream carts along Orchard Road, the OCBC people are just beside it, you show any OCBC card, they give you the complimentary ice cream slip, fill in your name and you exchange it for an ice cream. We had chocolate, read bean and chocolate mint.

Why are we happy? Because it is a genuine thank you for being their card member treat. (ya ya, I was so easily bought over by ice cream? haha.. it was such a hot day!)

Compared this to few weeks ago, when I was with my aunt, and there was this UOB promotion that asked you to spin the wheel, they were shouting out loud through the speakers: "UOB card members, show your card and you get to spin the wheel, guarantee free gift."

Guess what? They do give you free gifts (plastic pencil boxes, etc..), but you got to go into the bank, sit down and listen to them sell you some products before they give it to you. When we were told to sit down, we told them, "No Thanks" and walked out, we don't want your gift.

Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upp Bukit Timah Road

Last weekend, uncle and aunt brought us all to eat at this place that many people are flocking too. It's far off, but not too far from where they live.

During peak hours, you got to wait for some time, but if you go earlier or later, it might not be that bad. So, what's the attraction? The food's reasonably good and it is reasonably cheap. You know eating out nowadays can be so unsatisfying (small portions) and yet so expensive.

Tuck along this coffee shop called Hup Choon Eating House along Upper Bukit Timah Road, there's a zhi-char stall.

It's called Ga-Hock Seafood. You need to go to the back of the Eating House. You will be amazed by how many people are there! (Where we sat was open air, so the food photos are a bit blur, due to insufficient lighting)

We had 9 of us (three children), and this is what we ate:
Sweet and Sour Pork, nicely done, and portions big too. $14

This is the prawn paste chicken. $12.
It's kinda like well fried outside, but inside it is still juicy.

Almost all the table here as the Curry Fish Head. $19.
Served on a big claypot, the sauce is so captivating, if you like curry, you will definitely ask for more rice, so you can wallop the curry! haha.. It is topped with yummy fried bean curd skin.

This is the seafood mix with veg and tofu. $18.
The tofu's not too bad.

This is the long beans with dried shrimps. $10.
We can taste 'salted fish' bits in it too. With 'hae bee' (dried shrimps) and salted fish, you can imagine how fragrant it is!

The sambal kangkong ($7) is also delicious. Yes, with the 'woke hei'.
Hey, even the kids found it yummy, thought it is a bit spicy for them.

Yup, a new discovery for the rest of us, thanks to aunt's recommendation. (Or aunt's gang of friends)

Oh yes, it only accepts cash. So if you are coming remember to bring cash.

Benkei Japanese / Korean Cuisine @ NUS Science Canteen

It's a quick revisit to this new stall at the NUS Science Canteen. This time, two other colleagues who did not try it with us the other day decided to give it a try.

Ms Preggy has the fish set. $4. It seems quite tempting isn't it? She gave us some of her fish to try. Not too bad. The set seems to be more worth it, compared to the rice dishes that we had.

'Pirate' had the curry set. $4. It looks quite good too. Definitely not the best in town, but at this price, can pass.

The set comes with rice, soup and some cute little pieces of jelly.

COVA Pasticceria-Confetteria @ Paragon

Last Saturday, met up with Momo, Sue and Dino for lunch at a new 'chi-chi' cafe in town. COVA Pasticceria-Confetteria. Doesn't it sound where you can find all the tai-tai's will be at?

Cova occupies an outside area where lunch and dinner is served, and the 'main' shop where food's prepared and all the delicious sinful looking cakes are displayed and it's also where you can have a nice afternoon tea.

We sat outside, and this is the view after everyone has left. It was packed when we arrived.

We were suppose to meet another friend, but she suddenly went 'MIA' the last few days. Calls go unanswered etc. (haha.. it reminds us of another friend.) So only 3 of us met.

After placing our orders we were asked if we wanted any bread. Yes we did. This little thing served to us is quite yummy. It's salty! We read that everything here's baked at 5 am, and ready to be served for breakfast at 8 am.

Well, Momo had the Vegetarian Quiche. She said it was delicious.

Sue had the Salami Panini.

I had the Ham and Cheese Panini. Since both Sue and I were having panini, we decided to swap half of ours. Momo ate from our plates too.

The Salami was nice and so was the traditional ham and cheese which was recommended to us. They are generous with the fillings.

How does Dino come into the picture? Remember we had a MIA friend? We had an extra seat and found out that Dino was nearby. So, we asked her to join us. When she came, it was when the Tea menu starts. (3 pm).

We ordered the biggest tea set, so that we can pinch her food. 8 items in the set plus a pot of tea.

The two ladies decided they need a coffee fix. Italian Coffee!
So each of them ordered a cappuccino.

Looking at Dino's tea set, the ladies decided to be tempted by going into the shop and they ordered these!

They sure are delicious. Good things comes in small sizes.
Here's a peep into what's inside.

Benkei Japanese / Korean Cuisine @ NUS Science Canteen

Colleagues and I made a trip to the NUS Science Canteen yesterday. We realise that the old Japanese stall that was closed has now reopened and it's 'under new management'. We thought we should give it a try.

It's a two in one stall. The main signboard says Benkei Japanese Cuisine, but the secondary board says Benkei Korean Cuisine.

DPuk tried the Oyako Don $3.50.

I had the Ten Tama Don $3.50

To us, the food's ok, taste good too, Definitely a 100% improvement compared to the previous Japanese food stall in the same location. But we concluded that the portion's a bit small.

(Small is a bias comparison :-) by many people who eats here.
Explanation: Things in the canteens are NUS have an average of $2 for most meals. But when someone charges $3.50, your expectations in the 'NUS Canteen Economy' must raise a high percentage right? haha... Yes, that's the bias. )

Ministry of Food の My Izakaya @ Bugis Junction (Desserts)

What we liked about this place is the desserts :-)

You can order 1 scoop of the gelato like this Green Tea Gelato. $3.50
Made from Hokkaido Milk. Yum...

Or order these darlings that it is famous for.
The Macha mixed Imo $6.50

You would like the deep fried sweet potato and yam. It goes well with the ice cream.

Any red bean person would love this. The Macha Zen $4.00
Red Bean Green Tea Ice Cream and dango staying afloat red bean paste.

The Macha Kakigori $3.00
The Japanese style 'ang tao peng'. :-)

The desserts here are as good as the conversation we had with out new friends :-)

Ministry of Food の My Izakaya @ Bugis Junction

Last Saturday night, Momo and I got to meet up with Teckiee and XLB, food blogger friends from KL. We were suppose to meet at Ma Maison as recommended by Uncle Nic. (but he was not here, he had to go back to KL)

But... due to super long queue and non booking, we had to change venue instead. The 5 other new friends who was there earlier, found MOF. The kind people at MOF arranged for a table of 7 amidst the peak hour traffic.

It was interesting to finally meet people whose blog we read. We were listening to stories of KL good bloggers. Wow, they do have a good life there. They have almost weekly food outings!

Anyway, here's what we ate. We ordered some sort of mains for each person, and share other stuff, so we can try more things. :-)

This is one of the maki that we shared. We had one salmon cutlet maki and one karaage maki. $8.80 each.

This is the wasabi seafood salad for 3pax. $7.80
When the wasabi sauce is poured over, it is quite delicious. If the wasabi is more hair raising it would have been even better. :-p

This is the seafood toji set. $18.80.
I am confused, I can't remember who ate what. We were all busy chatting!

But I do remember what I had. This is the Tonkotsu Ramen $8.80 that I had.
(I think I prefer the black pork version at TomTon :-p )

The Tan-Tan Ramen. $8.80
Momo had this.

This is the Seafood Cold Ramen $9.80 that Teckiee and another friend had.
(There was a few other of teckiee's friends. They have been eating all day it seems)

The conversation was better than the food. LOL.
The desserts here are much better. Look out for it tomorrow.

$1 Juice Stall @ Dover Market and Food Centre

This fruit juice / fruits stall has no name. (as you can see in the photo)
Colleagues and I call it the Dover $1 Drinks Stall.

We visit this stall because the drinks cost $1 dollar for most drinks. Or so far, we have only tried the $1 ones and we are happy with it.

Two cups of the juices we had.
Left is the Avocado and right is the watermelon.

It's one of the places where the juices are more than the ice. Don't you find that many fruit juice stalls fill up 3/4 of the cup with ice? This one still has not. ;-)

The $1 avocado shake is comparable with the more expensive versions elsewhere.

Don't be frightened off by the Sashimi's pricing in this restaurant. You pay for the quality.

Why we came here is to try the set meals that are very affordable. They are delicious too. The set meals comes with a soup, pickles and bowl of mushroom and jelly fish.

When we saw the menu, everyone seems to want to order the unagi. LOL We all decided to order different sets when we asked each other what they were thinking of having.

Una-Jyu $18

Oyako Don $15

Tori Teriyaki Don $15

Ten-Don $20
Deep fried Shrimp Bowl. This is what I had and I totally enjoyed it. Light and crispy and so flavoursome.

I did not record the name of this set. $20
We saw that the egg even had a stamp on it. Wow!

After the meal, fruits were served.

With the fruit tray was a cup of new tea that was brownish (Brown Rice Tea maybe?). The earlier green tea was taken away.

It was a great meal.

We were all anticipating a lunch here. Colleague who arranged this outing said that most of the reputable Japanese Chef has its roots from the master chef here.

Just beside the Le Meridien Singapore Hotel Lobby is Nogawa.

We started by ordering sashimi for 7 persons. It was fabulous.
It came in two big platters. This is one of them.

This sashimi platter came with a fabulous price too. $135 per platter.
(We had a jaw dropping reaction when we asked for the bill. LOL...)

The rest of the sashimi goes with the soy from the table.
But for the saba, there was a different sauce that they served us in a different saucer with chives.

We also shared a Cod Fish Yakimono $20

Spine Meat Soup @ Kopitiam Clementi

On days that I feel like having soup with meat or salted vegetables that's not really salty, I go to the Bak Kut Teh stall at Clementi. (Not that it is superb, but it is nearby) It's one of the stalls at the Kopitiam branded food outlet. (Beside the previous Macdonald's that has been knocked down).

For years, I only order the Bak Kut Teh, but few months ago, I decided to try the Spine Meat Soup. I kinda like the salty soup with lean meat. Sis does not like it, preferring to eat the usual Bak Kut Teh.

(Side tracking, are you one who eats the same things from the same shop on the same days for years? I saw this one a friend's status on Facebook. "xx has eaten the same type of sandwiches every Thursday for the past 3 years. " I can totally connect with that!)

I like it because I like 'kiam chai' / salted vegetables. The taste of kiam chai (or sze chuan veg) always make me happy. Yes, I am peculiar. ;-p

I usually eat it with rice, plus a bowl of stewed kiam chai too. This kiam chai side dish is totally not salty haha.. But I like it. Especially the soft cloves of garlic that usually comes with it. I love to put the whole thing in my mouth and pull out the skin. Anyone does that too?

Talking about rice, the news on TV earlier said rice prices in supermarkets will go down next week. Do you think those hawkers who raised prices because their excuse was prices of rice has gone up, will lower them? I doubt so.

Satay @ Bukit Timah Food Centre

Sis and I were visiting uncle and aunt's place for dinner to pass them some stuff we got them from our holidays. We did not tell them earlier we are coming, but they said come over for dinner nonetheless.

A bit 'paiseh' for being last minute, so we 'tapow' some satay from the Bukit Timah Food Centre.

We got it from the stall facing the HDB. It's from the Western Stall + Satay Stall. The western food part has not open for months though. 40 cents. But it seems the satay stick has shrunk. Yes, everywhere you go, you can feel the shrinking of food portions.

Uncle told us, this used to be the nicer stall, but now the other stall at the other side seems to be better now. Yes, musical chairs. LOL.

Fong Seng Nasi Lemak @ Clementi Rd

Think you have seen this before, but this happens to be my dinner tonight. While we were away last week, we were thinking of food we get back home! One of the food we saw was Nasi Lemak, but it was selling for like AUD6-8, (in a open air market some more) a bit hard to swallow.

It also happened that our stomachs still has not adjusted back to local time. I was totally famished at 6 PM, despite snacking on Meiji Plain Crackers at 5. SMS-ed sis if she wanted dinner, she said yes, and she was also so hungry.

So on the way home, we had takeaways. 2 packs of Nasi Lemak.

For both packs, we had the chicken wings. The chicken wings always taste good. Especially if they are freshly fried. If not, wait for it. hehe..

I think most people order differently when they go to Fong Seng, most people seem to top it with different kinds of the fried stuff. We always have 1 fried chicken wing and 2 vegs.

The pack above had chilli lady fingers and long beans (hidden).
The pack below also had lady fingers, but with achar.

Satisfied our cravings. ;-p

Seafood Paradise @ Defu Lane 10

I'm back! Came back last nite and was so tired and the humidity here really hits you.

It's straight to having a delicious lunch on the first day back at work. It was a birthday celebration for 3 other colleagues whose birthday all fall on this month! Three of them are also in the same team maintaining our state of the art Unix servers.

Today's lunch is at Seafood Paradise that is situated in an industrial area at Defu Lane 10. It seems they have opened a branch at the Singapore Flyer too.

The first dish that came was the Seafood Supreme Fried Rice. Nicely done. The rice's coated with a golden hue, light and fluffy with pieces of crab meat and it has ebiko on top of it too.

We also had the broccoli that was topped with egg whites and scallops. The scallops hidden below it. We find this a bit bland.

The Homemade tofu. It's a big piece of tofu that's covered with meat floss. Below the meat floss you can find 'small bite size' sea cucumber, prawns and also vegetable. Not too bad.

The reason we came here is to have crabs!
This is the Crab in Superior Stock with vermicelli. Very starchy but nice. The 'tang hoon' taste quite good in the stock, which we think taste very chicken.

Posterior view. hehe..

The second crab we had it cooked with Butter.
Personally, I like the butter version. It's sweetish, but colleague said more butter would be better. We wanted mantou to go with this, but their supply of it has not arrived! arrghh..

But a little experiment, we added some butter sauce to the vermicelli, it tasted even better! LOL

Think this picture is a bit blurry. After eating crabs, your fingers get wobbly?
The Honey Pepper Ribs. Lovely.

Indian Food @ NUS Engineering Canteen

Last day in Darwin now. Wondering what we have eaten and visited in Darwin? Cannot post in this blog lah. We are eating outside Singapore, so does not fit into the Singapura Daily Makan blog.

If you are wondering, we got here by Jetstar. Bought our tickets long long ago when we saw their promo prices. We will be back to regular daily postings tomorrow!

Thanks for bearing with our auto scheduled posting since 7th of June.

-------------

Many people who visits this blog has commented that I eat expensive food everyday. Actually, no. This is more like what we eat daily.

Colleagues and I are fortunate to be accessible to cheaper $2 - $3 meals that is being sold in the canteens of NUS and the surrounding.

We like the food from the Indian stall at Engineering Canteen. I love brinjals ;-)

Chinese Food @ NUS Science Canteen

Second last day in Darwin. Tomorrow will be our last day here. It's been 8 days since we are here. Everyone's saying what can you do in Darwin? Well, it seems we have survived so many days here.

Back to my prepared posts....

-----

Wondering what typical students and staff in NUS around the Science Faculty eat? They eat the Chinese Food at the Chinese Cooked Food stall. It has a perpetual long queue and no, it does not have very nice tasting food. So so and mostly very sweetish.

But it still has a long queue because it is cheap! LOL

Typical food that I have. 2 Veg and 1 Meat. I love bittergourd.

What you see costs $1.90.

Thunder Tea Rice @ Food Republic, VivoCity

I have never heard about Thunder Tea Rice until I read about it at Camemberu's blog.

So the other day when I was at Food Republic Vivo City, I saw the Thunder Tea Rice, I thought I should try it. Hey, I actually like it! All the veg and stuff on it reminds sis and I of korean bibimbab. I had the brown rice version. $4.50

After stirring it, it becomes a tasty and lovely mess.

Oh, this is the yukky part. The green stuff that you are suppose to pour into the rice. When I tried the soup, urrghh..... horrible. Then I remembered, it is suppose to be good. So I forced myself to drink it. I did not finish the soup though. I ate it by scooping a spoonful of soup and adding rice into the spoon. :-P

I finished the rest of the delicious rice without this soup.

Sis did not want to have that rice. She had Brown Rice with Basil Chicken instead. $6.00
She did not enjoy this. She said the my vege rice taste better. LOL....

OK Confess up. Did you finish your vegetable today?

Steamed Soups @ NUS Science Canteen (New stall)

Recently a new stall opened at the NUS Science Canteen. If you are familiar with the Science Canteen, Bambino is gone! A new stall selling steamed rice and steamed soups have taken over. It seems people in this canteen has been sick of eating the same thing. So when a new stall opens, everyone flocks over...

These photos were taken last week. Colleagues and I decided to give it a try. We ordered 4 different soups and 3 types of their steamed rice.

The Pork Ribs with Old Cucumber Soup. $2.20

The Chicken with Bitter Gourd Soup. $2.20

The Pork Ribs with Watercress soup. $2.20

The Pork Ribs with Szechuan Vegetable Soup. $2.20

All the soup was tasty. For me personally, I like the Szechuan Veg and the Bittergourd Soup.

For the steamed rice. They only had 3 kinds available when we were there, so we ordered all three. This is the Pork Ribs Rice. $2

This is the Chicken with Chinese Sausage Rice. $2
The other Chicken Rice $2 looks the same. Just take off the sausages and imagine it with more chicken.

The rice portions are kinda small. But filling enough for small to moderate eaters. Colleagues says that if you order a rice and soup to go with it, it will be expensive by canteen food standards. ;-)

We think it will survive for the time being...

Mcdonalds @ NUS Engineering Canteen

It has somehow become a routine. When we have lunch at the NUS Engineering canteen, we will end up at Mcdonalds having 'desserts'.

We were tempted to go in by the advertisements. They have spicy Mcnuggets and Onion Rings now. We did not really like it. These nuggets are a tad dry.

Onion rings. Hmm.. the photo show many more rings. How come we have only so few? The photos they used for their adverts we always wonder if it's true.

(But you can be sure that this blog does not clear off the table, no special lighting etc, seen as it is.. so you can trust this blog right? haha..)

The two disappointments were redeemed by the Green Tea McFlurry.
We actually liked it. LOL...

I think it's the best McFlurry so far.

Yes, all of us had one each. (One couple shared one because someone 'die die' must have coffee)

Pretty childish don't you think? The McFlurry pyramid above. LOL

Chicken Rice @ NUS Engineering Canteen

We have been eating at NUS Canteens more often. Things are cheaper there and the students are all away for the semester holidays, so there's no crowd!

A colleague was saying that the "Mala" chicken at the NUS Engineering Canteen is not bad for its price. So, 4 or 5 of us went to order the same thing.

The lady in the photo, she calls everyone 'handsome guy'/'shuai ge' and 'pretty lady'/'mei nu'. haha...

A piece of 'mala' chicken and 2 side dishes, we all chose 2 vegetables.

Around $2.50 I think. Can't really remember.
The chicken is not as spicy as we thought, but the taste is not bad.

Rong Guang BBQ Seafood @ Ulu Pandan Road

It has been some time since we came here, so our extended large family came here for dinner around half a month ago. We like this place because the food's consistently good.

This place is always crowded on weekends too.

The sambal stingray. We always love this.

For the kids and the 'one' adults who can't take spicy food, the non spicy version of it.

The sambal kangkong.

I think its the first time we have this other veg. hehe..

One of the favourites here, the prawn paste chicken wings.

Oyster Omelette. Don't know what's with my taste buds, but I seem to don't like oysters this way anymore. (Am I getting old??)

I like meat like this though. LOL
Yummmmmy...

We always have this here because it is sis and aunt's favourite. It's another dish that I don't seem to appreciate. :-p

Marche @ Vivo City

Right now, while you are viewing this post, Momo, Keropokgirl and Keropokman are holidaying. It's our third day out of Singapore. As this is a daily photoblog. We got to get the post going....

If you are wondering where we are, we should have stayed 2 days in Darwin, and now in Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia.

This post is when sis and future bro-in-law came to visit us last month. We went to Marche after dinner to sit down and have a drink.

Root Beer. This is Australian Root Beer, where we are right now.
But I don't think they are made in NT though. Think it is from Victoria where the 3 of us lived for a few years.

The hand squeezed juice.

And a banana chocolate crepe that we shared.

Crepes are something that most people enjoy. It's quite versatile too. We love both savoury and sweet crepes. :-)

Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits @ Singapore Flyer

Momo and I walked to Singapore Flyer to see what we can eat there. Walking around we saw that this is the most popular place. So we decided to give it a try.

We did not know how to order, but we thought 4 pieces of chicken would be just nice. We were in for a surprise! We had 2 pieces of spicy and 2 pieces of non spicy.

The chicken tastes different from the usual KFC. If you have tried Marrybrown in Malaysia, it's something like that. We loved it. It is really juicy and crispy.

We realise that it also comes with cajun frieds and two biscuits.

What are biscuits? They are these cup cakes that taste salty on the outside and the inside it is soft like cakes. Unique tasting. It comes with jam, so you spread sweet jam over salty dough.

This is the mashed potato. We kinda like it because it reminds us of 'bak chor'. The potato sauce had tiny minced meat in it and very yummily garlicy!

The coleslaw also tasted nice. You know the KFC coleslaw has this smell. This one does not, it is more vinegarish.

Wonder how much it cost? Here's the receipt.

We realise the next day after we ate this, the Sunday Times had an article about food places to eat at the Singapore Flyer.

Xi Yang Yang Dessert @ United Square

The episode was a bit funny to us, but sis did not think it was funny at all. Here's why:

We had lunch at Globetrotters while sis conducted her choir practice in church. Our bro (plus our potential future sis-in-law) was also on AV duty at another service in church. They were going to join us for 'tea' and meet up at United Square, after they had finished.

When they had supposedly reached, sis called us, asking where we were. Oops! found out she went to the wrong place! They had taken a cab to UE Square. She realised it was the wrong 'square'. OK. They had to catch another cab to come over, since it is far away. The next cab driver took them to Novena Square instead! Aiyo!!! Wrong place again!!! Sis sure was angry!

Luckily Novena Square and United Square is a walking distance away. So to cool down, we ordered some cold desserts. We had wanted to drink coffee and eat kaya toast at Ya Kun, but it was a packed, there were too many of us. So we ended up the shop beside.

We ordered a few desserts to try.
(Plus they allowed us to have next door's coffee here too. hehe..)

This was the mango pudding with pomelo. $4.80
We had two of these.

This is the second mango pudding we had.

I had the mango shake instead. It comes with a layer of jelly below. $3.80

Bro had the Red Bean, Grass Jelly with Ice Cream. $3.80

Bro's friend had the Herbal Jelly. (Gui Ling Gao)
A bit 'pai seh' to ask her for the dessert so that I can take a photo of it. Just in case bro's friend think his future bro-in-law is mad.

The dessert here's average. The mango pudding is nicer than my mango shake for sure.
(I am thinking of the famous mango dessert stall in KL's Chinatown now. )

Globetrotters Restaurant @ United Square

Continuation from yesterday's post.
We tried to have salads and veggies only, but you know it is impossible. :-p

Cousin had grilled chicken with crispy bacon on it. The chicken is a tiny bit charred, but it taste quite ok.

Uncle had the Pide. (pronounced P-day) It's some turkish bread thingy that taste like pizza. We actually think it is quite yummy.

Aunt and I each had the sandwich. I had the chicken and aunt had the beef I think.

We swapped half of ours with each other, so we can taste more stuff.

I guess the main draw here is not the food, but the children's playground. I think kids will love this place. One of the many rare children friendly places.

Globetrotters Restaurant @ United Square

Had lunch at United Square last Sunday. It's been a long time since we came here.
We were dropped off on one of the floors at the carpark, and when we walked in the mall, we saw this shop.

Did we just have salad?

Of course not. More photos in tomorrow's post.
(If you think I am rationing photos, you are right! I am! lol...)

Something Peranakan

It must be a surprise, but the dishes we proposed some felt it too hard to come up with it. But everyone did come with something. We were blessed with so much food. No, none went to waste, leftover was 'packed' and people brought back other people's food that they liked.

Here's what we had. AYeo made Sambal Timun. (Sambal Cucumbers).

Es-Ng made the Nyonya Curry Chicken.

I made Babi Ponteh. (I should have prepared it overnight, the taste has not gone into the meat yet, and it was my first try. Not very good. :-p)

Ab-Sim made us Otah.

Sis made Fried Mee Siam.

SatuKosong made us Chap Chye.

Sis and I experimented food again. We made Cincaluk Eggs.
We had it a few days ago and tried to re-create it, but it was too too salty. We did not even add salt. Think we need to wash the cincaluk off some of its saltiness first.

Pete and Liz brought us Yellow rice.

It's not peranakan but Indonesian ;-)
The lodeh that goes with the yellow rice.

More of the condiments. Hard work!

GYeo brought loaves of bread.

AntQ made skewered eggs and fish/meat balls.

PChin made agar agar. This is Chrysanthemum flavour.

And Sarsi flavour too.

LyChin bought us these cute chewy buns with different types of toppings.

Think there are some other food, where I forgot to snap the photos. The photos above are also dark for some. So sorry about it.

Well, it was a fun eat in day. Wonder when will we do it again. ;-)

A Peranakan Food Party at Home...

Just the other day, we saw a friend on Msn Messenger had the message tagged behind her nickname that she had prepared nyonya curry chicken. Out of gluttony or sorts, I asked if she would cook for us. She said yes, but there's no such thing as a free lunch!

Then it morphed into a 'let's prepare a menu, and send it out to a few friends who might appreciate Peranakan Food. See if they are interested to prepare a dish and join us.' kind of gathering.

We themed it 'Something Peranakan'. We came out with this too, sent out with the invitation.

*The Bibik's Fiery Kari Ayam*
A secret recipe stashed under Bibik's bed. The fussy and meticulous bibik prepares the drool some Kari Ayam.

*Ponteng School for Babi Ponteh*
Organic black pork, secretly imported from Hokkaido. Tenderly braised with Fictitiously Organic Black Bean under the charcoal flames.

*Not Bananas, but Udang Nanas*
Succulent wild prawns and freshly picked juicy sun-riped pineapple. Now you know how nyonyas capture their baba's hearts.

*Hey Mr Cabin aka Enche Kabin*
Hand Crafted with tender loving hands. Little golden nuggets made from 10 exquisite ingredients. Please leave some for others.

*Oh What a Mess - The Ultimate Rojak*
The salad with a difference. Forget extra virgin olive oil. This orient salad uses the highest grade hae-ko and the freshest ingredients.

*Dancing for Dessert - Bubur Cha Cha*
Cha Cha Cha, you gotta dance for your dessert. Questionably Organic Sweet Potato, Tender Yam, Sago and Extra Virgin Coconut Milk. Drool on....

The replies that came in was so funny! Here are some snippets of the replies:

- There is no such thing as free lunch. So those who come empty-handed, will be tasked to clean the house, or give me foot and shoulder massage ... pick one

- I am on for the Peranakan challenge. How about we come in Peranakan wear too? :)

- tough tough.. I got to increase my repertoire..

- Wow. very hard man, 90% of the ingredients don't know me and I don't know them. :)

- eh guys can we cater?? dun stress ourselves over a holiday break!! We should just watch estella make her nice nonya curry =)

- I'm lost in in deep blue sea....... Can I have more details? Also.... which is fact and which is fiction?????? I can volunteer peranakan water----- u havent heard of it???? its the oldest recipie in peranakan history...... they cant live without it.

- onz! but cooking peranakan food is not my forte (or any other kind of food).. can i just volunteer to chop something?

Well, it did happened! Want to guess what our friends came up with?

Old Mother Hen Traditional Herbal Soup @ Sims Ave

Yesterday, sis and I had lunch with our friends from our hometown, Batu Pahat. It's interesting how nowadays we keep in contact via Facebook and we can even arrange food outings too!

It was like event to look forward to. A place with a name like Old Mother Hen, (Lao Kuey Boo in Hokkien) it just sounds unique/tickled enough to look forward to right?

Southernoise has been talking about eating Fallopian Tubes! Errr. OK. Sounds a bit out of the ordinary, but the rest of us want to know what it looks like and how it taste. LOL...

This is a photo of the shop across the street. Took a snap of this while waiting for cars to clear.

First dish we had was the KL Style Hokkien Noodle. $12.
The noodles topped with loads of crispy stuff! Sis and I loved this. Black slithering noodles down your throat with bits of crunchy lard.

The next dish, Fallopian Tubes. $12.
If you were wondering like me, "which animal?, which animal?" This dish was made possible by the sacrifice of a pig.

I let everyone eat it first before I put this piece in my mouth. LOL It's the kind of food that you have reservations eating if you know what it is.

I ate one and only one piece. It's crunchy, just like eating pigs intestine actually. The sweet and spicy sauce kinda goes well with it. I ate more onions and spring onions instead. ;-p

Another dish that I liked. The Homemade Tofu. $16.
It was tasty and the meat toppings on it had loads of 'crunchies' too! (Am getting an overdose of crunchies already!)

Next was the vegetable. The boss recommended us the Kailan. $12. They prepared it in a 2 in 1 way. The vegetable stems is the way how you expect kailan to be cooked. The leafy foliage above was sliced thinly and deep fried and topped with meat floss.

I can't help laughing while I type this. I am reminded of some people who permed their hair! All fluffy and light on top. Hehe...

Next was the Fish Head we had. $28.
It sure was tasty. Fresh fish always taste good! The sauce was spicy. It was like spicy and savoury, something very sambal-ish.

We were promised that it would not be any 'loco' fish. (hard flesh). It it is, he will substitute the dish with another fish.

The next carbo dish was the Claypot Rice. $12.
I am not a huge fan of claypot rice, but this taste quite decent. The yellow ball in the middle is salted egg yoke.

The dish for its namesake. Old Mother Hen Shi Quan. (Ten Complete) $6.
It's a 'ladies soup'. It taste quite ok actually. Guys, sometimes it's just in your head that you would not be able to swallow it. Think of the dark version of Bak Kut Teh. Now you will love it. It taste quite good. It leaves a sweet and bitter aftertaste.

We had complimentary fruits. It looks like a lobster doesn't it? They sure are creative making use of the watermelon skin! The saw the owner Jimmy walked directly across the street and came back with the watermelon. If you order to a certain amount, he provides complimentary fruits.

We had 6 people, not 7 as in the receipt. If you can read chinese, you will understand. ;-P

Looking forward to the next outing with these bunch of friends.
Two friends are also food bloggers. Hop over to their website to read about what they think.
