Ghee Leong: Traditional Bakery

This is one of the few traditional bakeries in Singapore. They produced the black crusted bread. This shop is located at Whampoa Drive and produce these breads for provision shops and coffee shops.

The shop is called Ghee Leong. Look at their also archaic signboard. Nice eh?

You can see racks and racks of these "chao tar" (burnt) top bread.

Do not judge a bread by its looks! Here is a close view.

Can you imagine eating the crust? No, it's not meant to be eaten!

They are to be sliced off! It looks like these!

They are then sliced and pack into bags. Sorry, I bought the bread but forgot to take photo of it! These will then become the 'kaya toast' that you get in many shops.

In tomorrow's post, I shall post more of the breads :-)
Bread lovers, stay tuned!

Foodies got to take care of their health!

Remember I was tagged some time ago, and one of the 5 things that about me is that I take blood test yearly?

Here's the photo of the nurse taking my blood. (with another nurse who graciously agreed to take photo for me! haha..)

This picture shows the 2nd tube of the 3 tubes been sucked out of me! The 1st tube is in the nurse's palm.

The first tube being 'sucked' out of me is available at my Singapore Daily Photo blog.

Estivo Gelateria @ Greenwood Avenue

Last night, friends and I had our monthly meet up and eat and celebrate people's birthday in that month. The 20 over of us had dinner at Peperoni Pizzeria and later search for a place that can fit so many of us to have cake and tea.

The place next door (yes right next door, who was very empty) said they had tea and desserts. This kind lady said they will prepare the tables for us. 1 minute later, another more 'senior' lady said they can't arrange a place that can fit 20 over of us, want us to sit separately. We kindly declined their offer and walked away.

Hey, just a look and you can see it can be done, guess if you ask employees they just can't be bothered, unless the boss is there, all of us thought it will be a different story. They could easily have gotten $100 over from us if they did a bit of work. Enuf said of them.

Anyway, we walked along Greenwood Avenue and saw a gelato place. Estivo Gelateria. Yey! everyone was happy. Asked if they can fit 20 of us, well, this place is much better, they said OK, shifted the tables around.

All very yummy flavours!

Prices are reasonable too!

This is what I had. This is one of the many cups ordered.

This is what I had. Choc Chip Peanut Butter something, plus Butterscotch something.

We also had an ice cream cake for the birthday boy.

Ok. More ice cream / gelato place, click on the Label Ice Cream below, Blogspot will list them all out :-)

We saw from their brochures they hold parties too. They are at 26 Greenwood Avenue, S 289224. Do a search for their phone numbers :-)

NUSS Guild House: Lou Yee Sang

Today our office had our annual CNY lunch. It was held at the Guild House at NUSS. (NUS Society)

There was a lion dance performance too. And these 'fireworks'. haha..

See what a mess it made to our table! Luckily our food was served a bit later, but our drinks, sauce, chilli etc, all gone!

The first dish as usual is Yee Sang for this occasion. The top orangy part is raw salmon. The rest are shredded carrots, cucumbers etc... with keropok!!! of course!!!

Oh yes, the fun part! "lou-ing" the yee sang, meaning to toss it in the air! The higher you toss it, the better!

The Yee Sang on my plate!

While 'lou-ing', you are suppose to be saying some auspicious chinese proverbs, and here are some of them. Yes, they had a list for us at our table. :-)

Have you 'lou' your yee sang yet? This is a practice that is only common in Singapore and some parts of Malaysia.

Loong Fatt Tao Sar Piah (Balestier)

Around a week ago, colleagues and I visited another fellow colleague who had just given birth at Thomson Medical Centre. After visiting them, we walked across the street to buy the famous Tao Sar Piah there.

There are many stalls there, but most people says the one by Loong Fatt's the best.

This is their box. It says they are the original and only outlet.

And also claimed to be the best. haha.. (it's printed on the side of the box)

This is how it looks like. We bought both the savoury and sweet versions. The ones with sesame seeds are the savoury ones.

The inside of the tao sar piah. (the pictures are not so clear)

For many people, persimmons are delicious fruits. Dried persimmons like these shown here are also very popular with people.

This hip uncle with a pony tail selling persimmons. The small little red plate is where the samples are. He will be snipping them into tiny pieces for everyone to try.

Zoom in for you all to see..

Just in case you can't see it, here's an even nearer picture.

If you have been following my other blog, Singapore Daily Photo by Keropok, you would have seen some of the Chinatown photos.

Here's some more, for Christmas we saw the western style leg of ham. In Chinatown for Chinese New Year, there's this Eastern Leg of Ham.

This is the vendor cutting that huge leg into smaller chunks.

Soup that's cooked with a very tiny bit of the ham taste very very good!

There's so many types of jam tarts being sold at supermarkets, last year we found one that's so nice and we bought lots of it and everyone realised it ran out. This year we did not see it on sale.

But it's ok. We have some home made jam tarts given to us by our cousin. Her mum made it.

Hope you like this quick block, CNY season, lots of things to do at work.

5 interesting crunchy keropok bites.

I have been tagged by two bloggers:
- Daryl of Authentic Malaysian Cuisine & Local Delicacies
- Shilpa of Flog & Rosbif

I finally found some time to answer the meme. Think they tagged me more than 1 week ago!

Bite 1.
Other than keropok.com, I own a few other domain names. I love to squat on domain names, but I think I have grown so attached to ALL of them, I might never sell it any of it. When I bought it in 2003, I was hoping someone would pay me at least USD5000 for it. haha... Wishful thinking eh...

Bite 2.
I go for a full blood test every year, (except last year), the latest being last Monday. They will take 3 tubes of your blood and check everything possible. LOL. So far, it's been OK. I have a BMI of 22.1. Shall not bore you all with other details of results. I am now waiting for my latest test results. Hope they come out soon! (and favourable too)

Bite 3.
I am one of the 2 guys who is in my Wednesday afternoon lunch time Cardiofusion class of around 15. We do aerobics, boxercises. Surprised? With all the food, no choice, have to exercise! I walk around with a pedometer at times, and exercise with a heart-rate monitor. This guy is mad ah? LOL....

Bite 4.
I almost always have ice cream in my freezer. It's either boxes with individual sticks or tubs of ice cream. But I only eat 1 scoop (yes only 1) or 1 stick at a time. It's in case I have visitors and I can serve them something. My colleagues certainly knows this very well!

Bite 5.
I failed my ABSRM Grade 8 Pianoforte exams around 15 years ago. (by a few marks, sob sob sob, i still remember...)

I think there's no one else to tag. Every flogger I know seems to have been tagged!

Rong Liang: Shao La

This shop is located behind the Clementi West St 2 market. It used to be located in a coffeeshop just beside the market. It grew popular and now occupies 2 shop lots.

If you like food covered with lots of sauce, maybe this is a place for you. But it's a tad salty, you can guess from the pictures. :-p

The rice that's covered with soy gravy.

This is a fav soup. Szechuan veg soup. I like szechuan veg since young, so anything with it makes me happy :-)

This is the roast chicken wings.

The quack quack animal, duckie!

The "cha shao" and "shao rou". Roast pork and crispy skin pork.

We ordered a tofu dish as well.

OK, we are not gluttons. We had 6 people sharing the food above. You get quite full. We had another soup too, water crest soup.

Curry Favor Japanese Kitchen

Curry Favor is doing something nice for certain in return for favors right?

2 of our dearest friends who are getting married, invited a few of us over for lunch last Sunday. It is for the discussion of their wedding preparation, assignment of duties, brainstorming etc. Guess what? They invited us to this place that is so well named for it! haha....

Curry Favor is at Stamford House. (walking distance from City Hall MRT)
Their website: http://www.curry-favor.com/

Yup, that is actually the table place mats.

We all ordered the set, where you have either a salad or miso soup. Most of us took the salad. It's very plain, but healthy right?

You can guess from the name of the place, what it serves best. We all ordered all the different type of Japanese curry. This is what I ate. Pork belly curry.

This is the veg curry. (I think its with chicken right? looks like it)

This looks like beef? I am not sure at all. haha...

This is the mushroom curry.

After eating the curry, its time to work. It was actually discussion throughout the whole lunch.

Sorry the pictures are all quite blur for today's posting. Place a bit dark.

The next time you want help from people, you know where to bring them.

For those who always ask about the price, errr.. not sure, it's paid for. LOL...
Now we can't wait for the wedding. It's going to be at Raffles Hotel and at the lawn. How nice yah, a garden wedding... Better save our angpow money now.

Ricciotti - Italian Deli and Pastry

Last nite, it was Tuesday night again, a bunch of it after our BSF meeting, went to have something to eat. Not ice cream like last week, but we went to have Italian Desserts. 9 of us, and ordered 8 desserts to share. I shall not show the other food we ordered, desserts will do. LOL...

This is the tiramisu. Oh so yummy... Sorry ah, hands blur, so pic not so clear.

I have no idea what's the name of the following few desserts. Forgive me. But its delicious!

The hands behind is impatient, wanting to eat it and can't wait for this lousy photographer whose taking his own sweet time. Great looking desserts?

Break this and inside there's chocolate flowing out.

This is pretty eh? With cinnamon stick and star anise.

That creme with banana inside, wrapped with choc! See the background thumbs up?

This is my favourite! It's I think vanilla creme below and the choc cup is fab!

And Creme Brulee.

It's fun to go out in a group and order things to share. We're cheapo, we came here because it was already late, and you know, after certain hours, prices are halved! All these desserts, each of us paid SGD3 only. That's 1.5 Euro, USD2, MYR6.80, AUD2.50, £1 (Nowadays have to convert, people always ask how much in their currencies) Worth it ya...

But come here during normal hours, its worth paying full price too. hehe...

Heng Hua Food: Pu Tian Restaurant - Part 1

The last time we went to have Heng Hua, it was with family. This time, colleagues said let's go. This was taken 2-3 weeks ago. This Heng Hua Restaurant is also called Pu Tien. But this is Pu Tien Restaurant, the prev one was Pu Tien Seafood Restaurant. This one is most people call the 'original' one. haha..

This shop is also located at Kitchener Road, a few doors away from another restaurant with an almost similar name. Add: 127-129 Kitchener Rd, Singapore 208514.

Here's the shop front of the shop. It's true this shop's food taste better :-) Taken across the road.

They even have something to tell you that they have been on TV and Radio.

The kiam chai that's on the table when we sit down. I usually like salted veg, but this one not really my taste. But colleagues love it though.

This is one of the starter dishes. Make a guess. This is bitter gourd. Thinly sliced and very very cold. It is served with honey on a saucer by the side.

This is bought from ABC Market the same day we had quack quack duckie that day.

If you are in Singapore, the Channel 8 TV series that had Li Nanxing making ondeh ondeh will make you want to eat this too. haha..

Ondeh ondeh is green because the glutinous rice balls are mixed with Pandan leaves. (Screwpine leaves) It has gula melaka (palm sugar) inside that melts in your mouth! Its coated with desiccated coconut.

I had to hold it else the gula melaka will spill out.

I took another bite and had to quickly snap this with another hand. Arrghh the gula melaks is flowing out...

See you tomorrow :-)
