Hong Kong Kim Gary Restaurant @ Vivo City

Instant noodles on steroids! That was what I wanted to put for the header! haha..

Yesterday, we celebrated one colleague's birthday by going down to Vivo City for lunch. Someone suggested Kim Gary, so off we went there...

That's colleagues in front of the shop. The address is there too.

We sat down and the menu came.

It seems this might be the only branch in Singapore. There are 10 branches in Malaysia. The famous one is in Sungai Wang Plaza, KL.

Sorry ah. Blogger is not allowing me to upload the rest of the pictures, been trying for the last 15 mins. I will post the food pictures tomorrow. Going to sleep liao...

Sushi Tei @ Holland Village

Our aunts visited. One from London, the other from Malaysia. Together with Singapore aunt & family, we all went to have Japanese Food. We treated them to Jap.

We ate at Sushi Tei at Holland V. Here's what we ate.

They are having a Spring Promotion Special Menu. We ordered this from the Spring Menu.
Yummy and Delicioius. Salmon, Salmon Belly, Tuna, Scallops, Tuna. I love those mint leaves, they are so refreshing!

This is from the normal menu. Udon Curry.

Aunt from Spore loves ST's garlic rice, so we ordered it.

This looks interesting on the menu, so we ordered it. It's Wasapillar or something. It's something that looks like a caterpillar. Interesting eh!

Our fav, Jap Baby Octupus. We also had our fav seaweed behind.. (those sharp eyes pple eg Tigerfish can sure spot it one... haha)

This is another delicious thingy. It's egg roll and it wraps up unagi. Its warm too. You should try it!

Something else from the Spring Menu. Steamboat!

We ordered some Kimchi Steamboat.

It's quite big. Just nice for the 8 of us plus all the food above.
Lots of salmon, udon, kimchi, mushroom, etc...

We also had other thing that this photographer forgot to take, eg our usual Unagi Bento.
I think I should get the sushi tei card to get discounts man....

Amoy Street Food Centre : Ayam Power Cuisine

Today colleague and I had a chance to eat at the Amoy Street again, this time we tried the quite talk about Ayam Penyet available here.

This is the stall, also on the second floor.

This is the chicken, served on a wooden plate. Interesting eh!
The sauce is very good!

Then the rice with a piece of fried batter and a bowl of soup.
Hmmm I wonder why the ayam penyet is not penyet (ie flattened). Maybe it is not Ayam Penyet that we ordered. haha...

But it was delicious!

Amoy Street Food Centre : Nasi Lemak

This is the super long queue nasi lemak stall at Amoy Street Food Centre. It's located upstairs and I am sure you won't miss it. The queue is forever so long.

Here's Amoy Street Sign. I finally took it! Colleague queued for me! haha.. I 'lompang' him to order since he is eating it too. (I was attending a course at British Council that's why we are eating here today)

The stall number is 02-81, at the 2nd floor.

Here it is.. One side of the plate, with chicken wing, a slice of luncheon meat, fish cake, sambal.

The other side, the fried anchovies, fish fillet, otah and the cucumber.

Definitely very filling and quite delicious too! $3.

Masala Art - Peninsula Plaza

Those who was wondering about yesterday's quiz, it's at this place called Masala Art at Peninsula Plaza.

We had Indian Food Buffet there, we were celebrating two person's birthday from my CG.
Not showing the all the food from the buffet line, but this is interesting.

There's this guy making chapati there. Freshly made chapati just taste delicious!

The entrance to the shop, it's at Basement 1, Peninsula Plaza.

This guy making naan.

Another picture of the process.

After rolling the dough (yesterday's photo), the piece of flattened dough is put on the flat pan.

The naan is then put over the fire to make it expand!

There you go.... The above is the chapati making process.

Here, this is nann breads that is made in the kitchen. It is served to us in baskets like this.

Interesting ya?

Cooking flower drummets at home...

My cousin loves this dish. It's her maternal granny's specialty. So, other than yesterday's crabs, aunt also made this dish.

I am not very sure of the exact seasoning. When I find out and prepare it myself one of these days, I will post the recipe up.

The chicken drummets that have the meat all pushed to the top. Seasoned for a few hours in the fridge.

Then the oil.... for deep frying lah..

You dip it in a combi of floor. Rice flour and normal flour I think.
Then you put the big portion part right into the oil.

Then you add more.... and more.... and more....

After the thicker parts have been cooked, you can start to stir them so that the whole piece of chicken is cooked.

Then you drain off the oil.

That's it! Serve.....

I like the taste of it. If I am not wrong, the seasoning very simple. The main ingredients are galangal, onions and garlic.

How to cook your own chilli crabs at home... It's easy. Really!

Last weekend, went over to aunt's place. Remember the birthday cake? It was a birthday party.
The main thingy is eating crabs.

So here's the whole process of cooking crabs. You can do it at home too...

This are crabs that was just bought a few hours earlier. The secret to great tasting crabs is freshly 'murdered' crabs. haha.. No need to teach you how to kill crabs lah...

Here's the first container of the crabs.

These are the leggies part of the crabs.

That is a mix of onions and garlic and ginger.

Usually we use prima's crab mix, but the kids that was sent down to buy, bought this instead! haha..

Then after it smells really good, add in the chilli crab paste.

When it's nice and smell simply intoxicating, add in the crabs!

Stir fry them, mix them really well. I tell you, cooking chilly crabs will get rid of flabby arms! The exercise that you have to do to stir.... This is after adding water.... You can see the colour has changed...

Then after adding in the beaten eggs, it looks even yummier now...

After that, serve..

Chilli crabs must go with buns... This is the ones you get from the frozen section...

After steaming it... looks good ya...

Hope you enjoyed today's post. No, I did not cook them this time. Aunt did it. I just took photos.

Buddy Hoagies Cafe and Grill @ Bukit Timah Shopping Centre

Last Sunday after church, aunt said let's go to this new place where she had tea.
It's called Buddy Hoagies, and it is located at Basement 1, Bukit Timah Shopping Centre.

One thing about the food here, it looks very pale. But it taste ok. Scroll down and you can see what I mean.

Service was fast though. Did not have to wait long.

This is the cabonara. Very white right? We think if your garnishing a bit 'old', skip it lah.

Fish & Chips looks good though. I pinched some. It's 2 huge pieces.

I had grilled chicken. See pale pale right? haha.. But taste not bad lah..

This is the kids meal. Spaghetti and it comes with 2 oreo cookies!

This is Ham Rosti.

I think their target market is school kids. Lots and lots of offers for school kids.
If only, I am still a kid, I can get the discounts! haha...

Have you been to the new Harry Potter foodcourt at Suntec?

We thought we walked into a library or bookshop. Then we realise, it's yet another new food place by Food Republic.

It does look very Harry Potter-ish ya? This is situated where the previous Congress Kopi Tiam is, together with the buffet place which was later called Kuali.

Oops, I just called it Harry Potter foodcourt. haha..

Name of the stalls as book covers. So innovative.

Books for sale, or is it Pork Rib?

The library ends right here. You could see the clear separation. Not sure when it opened, but it must be these few days. Anyone know?

One of these days got to go back and try the food. I just took photos without eating! We just had a Indian Buffet celebrating our ex-CG leader's birthday at Peninsula Plaza.

Am sure that you have seen the advertisement on TV, Bus stops, Radio...

Have you tried it?

Sis and cousin tried it just now. They got Root Beer.
As you can see from the can, you can't figure out what you are getting!

Cheapest deal is at NTUC, where you get it for 70 cents a can, get 5 cans and get 1 free.
Cold Storage sells for 75 cents. The most expensive you can get is at Toastbox where they sell it at $1.50!

We went to the Ridgewood Close. Lots of boardgames to play, a bit like Settlers.

Gone to Ikea for Food, not Furniture

Wonder if its only in Singapore that when people says Ikea, other than Home Furnishings they think of Food!

My office mates, we went to Ikea yesterday. Someone needed to get some stuff there. The rest of us took the opportunity to eat there. Here's what we ate:

Seafood Fried Rice
There was actually quite a lot of dried oysters in the rice. A piece of fried chicken, one fishcake and one otah slice with sambal.

This is some mock meat vegetarian food. Forgot the exact name.
That's mock char siu, mock fish and mock sausages I think... with sambal of course.

And the famous Ikea Chicken Wings!

I work with a bunch of fabulous colleauges. Any occasion we can think of, we will "hey, that calls for a celebration, let's go eat".

Our dear colleague just came back from maternity leave, of course we go makan lah...
Some place not too far away, and definitely not too near. So we ended up here.

We ordered a 4 item cold dish.

Wanted something with "chai por" (pickled radish), so "lao ban niang" suggested this. Chai Por Tofu.

The happy mum wanted to eat Sweet and Sour Fish, so here it is.

Ordered also Marmite Chicken

The Duck Gang in our group wanted duck, so this is the sea cucumber and duck in claypot.

Of course must order veggies, so here it is.

Apparently, when they run of of cones, they fill up the sundae in these plastic cups, the cups that they give to you if you ask for ice water.

Evertop Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice @ Clementi Ave 2 (Previously Tanglin Halt)

This shop, Evertop Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice was very popular. It's a halal chicken rice place. It was previously at Commonwealth Drive / Tanglin Halt. It has moved for a few months to Clementi Ave 2.

It used to be a stall in a HDB coffeeshop. Now it is 2 shoplots in Clementi.

This is how it looks like now.

The veg dish.

"Lor Nerng". Braised Eggs.

This is Chicken Feet. (with the bones removed)

We ordered an extra bowl of ah char.

Curry Noodles Chicken @ Varinice Clementi

Quick post. What do I like to eat in Clementi Central? Do you know that there's absolutely no restaurants in Clementi?

The only restaurant is Pizza Hut! (and now maybe the Sumoya). All the food you get from the food market, coffee shop food courts, or fast food outlets like KFC and Mcdonalds.

This is what I ate for dinner. I don't know why, but I like the curry noodles from this stall. I always order this in the kuey teow version. It is covered with curry sauce and a steamed chicken wing.

It's always sold out during dinner, but manage to get it tonight.

Crabs @ Mellben Seafood : Toa Payoh

Last night, a group of friends went to Toa Payoh to have dinner. The sms that came a few days ago was "anyone for crabs?". Thanks to the organisers, we all got there and ate crabs.

(pssst the reason I am so 'gian' on going was that I heard that people says Mellben is good, aha! that means can take photos! haha...)

Mellben Seafood, Block 211 Lor 8 Toa Payoh.

We actually called up to book earlier, but was told it's fully booked, but if you try walking in, you might get a seat.

So, some people went there earlier, they got a seat. And very quickly too. We sms them in the car, quick order, so when we reach, we can start eating! LOL... So many people...

While waiting for food, walk around and take photos lor.
These are all the crabs in the glass container.

This sign is hilarious, just outside the "crab tank".

Then after a while, a whole new consignment of crabs came.
No, we did not order the whole crate of crabs for ourselves, the lady is just checking the weight so that she can sign off the invoice from the supplier.

Vain pot crab, posing at the camera!

After chatting.... and waiting.... the food arrived.
This is steamed crabs.

This is the Shimmering Sand Crab. Their "zhao pai" dish.

The leftover.... What a workout!
Did not post pictures of other things we ate lah....

So so lah. Pssst, a few of us were expecting hot and spicy chilli and pepper crabs. haha..
But our organisers, prefer lighter tastings one. :-p

Nasi Padang River Valley @ Zion Road : Lunch with Eastcoastlife and Shilpa

Shilpa wishes to eat local food that she can't get in France, so off we came to try Malay Food.
Here's what we ate. Since we were all bloggers, the cameras all came out! hahaha..

Some time ago, you might get confused because a 'fake' shop set up beside it. It's on Zion Road. Now that shop's gone. It's right opposite Great World City. As they have on this sign, it's the original.

The wide selection of lovely dishes.

Out of the many dishes above, we picked these few.....
As they say it in France, Bon Appetit

Brinjal (Terung in Malay)

Long Beans with Tofu & Tempeh
(Kacang panjang dengan tofu dan tempeh)

Beef Rendang. Never fail to get this whenever I come here...
(Rendang Lembu)

Korma Chicken.
(Ayam Korma)

Pickled Pineapple
(Jeruk Nenas)

It was a very interesting time with both Eastcoastlife and Shilpa. We later went over to Great World City to have tea and coffee.

TCC @ Circular Rd - with comfy bean bags too!

The other day, a group of our bsf friends went to makan makan. Wanted to go to Ricotti, but that place so packed, so we ended up at TCC at Circular Road. Very cool place, the upstairs they have low tables and bean bags. We were very busy playing the card game Phase 10.

I think this is TCC Royal Crumble. Lychee stuffed with yam, deep fried.

Oven Baked Marinated Chicken with garlic pasta.

Dunno the name of this. sorry

Also dunno who ate this, and what's the name. I only took photos. We were so busy playing Phase 10!

This is Marinated Beef Skewer, my partner for Phase 10 ate it :-)

This is Beef Mozza-Tofu. This is what I ate. Quite yummy. Beef and Silken Tofu in sukiyaki sauce at the bottom, covered with Mozzarella Cheese.

As usual, no face photos, to keep the privacy of my friends. Here's where we sat.
We had like quite a big group, and TCC was kind enough to give us this place.

Lovely bean bags and low tables. We also ordered lots of drinks. Did not take the photos. I tell you Phase 10 is so so addictive.

This is a huge plate of food, which costs only $2. It used to cost only $1.50!!!
What you see that looks like meat, no no, they are mock meat!

This is colleague's plate. I think we ordered one each. 4-5 plates of the same thing.
I like the top part, the crispy fried tofu skin. Colleage said that suppose to be mock duck! huh? How can it be duck? hahaha...

Geek Cooks: Olive Oil Mash Potatoes with Sweet Peas

Last Saturday was rare. I decided to stay home and not eat out!

So photos for today's food blog was what I prepared last Sat. It's been a long time since I use any of my 'expensive' kitchen decorations!

This is what I made. Mash Potatoes in Olive Oil with stir fried sweet peas.

Mash Potatoes with Olive Oil
- 1 bag of potatoes (approx 1 kg I think)
- 8 table spoons full of extra virgin olive oil (instead of butter, healthier mah...)
- fresh milk (about half cup)
- about 1 bunch (5-6 sprigs) of spring onions (or scallions)
- about 1 bunch (3-4 sprigs) of parsley (or cilantro)

Don't laugh at me ok? No I am not paid to name these brands. LOL...

1. Fill up a Scanpan Ceramic Titanium Wok with water filtered using a Brita Water Filter. Add in 2 teaspoons of salt in the chlorine free water.
2. Immerse the potatoes that have been cleaned and peeled, boil for around 25 mins or till its soft.
3. Pick up the potatoes with a Cuisipro Tongs and put them into a WMF pot.
4. Start mashing them using a NTUC-homebrand masher and crush the potatoes into smaller pieces.
5. Add in the extra virgin olive oil and mash. Add in milk and continue to mash till they are very smooth.
6. Add in the finely chopped up spring onions and parsley and stir.
7. Using a pepper mill, crush black pepper over, stir and that's it.

(I did not add salt in, if you wish, you can... I already boiled them in salted water)

Stir Fried Sweet Peas.
1 pack of sweet peas (use snow peas if you like)
1 medium size onion
3 cloves garlic.
1 1/2 teaspoon premium oyster sauce

1. Heat up the Scanpan Wok again, add in Extra Virgin Olive oil, and the sliced in rings onions. After they are translucent, add in the finely chopped garlic. After they are fragrant, add in the oyster sauce.
2. The sweet peas are sliced so they look like mini flattened rings. Add them in the wok. Quickly stir fry them and that's it!

I stir fry using a WMF spatula, and you can slice your onion using a Kyocera Ceramic Slicer too! LOL

OK. Enough of a geek cook who likes to buy kitchen utensils and never really use much of it. Mum always says 'waste money', my cheaper stuff can cook better food. Real skill. :-)

Waraku Japanese @ Central

Today's lunch after church was at Central. Wow, there's like 4 to 5 or more Japanese Restaurants at Central, one of the newest shopping mall in town.

We decided to walk into a familiar brand. Waraku. So here it goes....

The temaki we ordered. 3 diff kind. Unagi Temaki, Salmon Temaki and Soft shell crab temaki. (left to right)

Salmon Sushi

This is the paper pot set meal. Its beef.

It's paper on top on fire, see it does not burn. (think no longer a fad in Singapore, it's been around for years...) but still fun right?

The set includes also rice etc and these tempuras.

This is the pork soba something on hot stone.

It's steaming hot and stayed hot for a long time. Comes in a wooden box.

Sis will always order Okonomiyaki when she goes to a Jap place. So here it is... Very good..

This is chicken udon soup.

This is my food. Its Katsu Soba curry. Comes in a huge giantic bowl.

By the way, according to the lady taking our orders, all the udons and sobas are directly imported from Japan, not the local ones.

Geek Terminal : Coffee from the Heart

Are you a coffee lover, or are you a caffeine addict? Think about it.

Introducing Danny, one of the rare certified barista in Singapore. He makes coffee from the heart. Though I am not a coffee drinker, but I learned quite a bit from him just by his explanation while making a cup of espresso. He's one of the partners of Geek Terminal.

If you want to know more, go over for a cuppa. Just like the crowd of people that was there last nite, you might just taste your best coffee!

OK. Back to photo blogging.

This is "Coda di topo" or "mouse tail" in Italian. The flow out is determine by the coarseness of the grind and also the flow of water. Barista can take a look and know if other barista has done all the basics correct.

The espresso, which is approx 20 ml. (If I heard correctly.)
Correction: 30ml. (thank Danny for the correction)

Next it is to froth the milk for top up the espresso. In some places, you see a thermometer in it, but for an expert barista like him, he knows exactly when the desired shine and thickness of the frothy foam is achieved. (see his hands acting as a thermometer, and his eyes on the milk)

Doing it correctly, it should start with cold fresh milk and milk should not be heated beyond 70 C. When milk is heated or steamed, the lactose or 'milk sugar' becomes more soluble and the perceived sweetness also increases. It's one reason why if the froth is done properly, you do not need to add sugar to your espresso.

The frothed milk is mixed with the espresso.

The next few picture shows you the 'coffee art', where you get the designs on top of the coffee.

If you realise, the way he pours the milk into the cup, the design appears!
* See the chope chope section below for more pictures of it.. *

Our barista is drawing ping.sg for the group of us that was there.

Turn the cup facing us, there you go. ping.sg espresso.

ok. the chope chope section.
before i go... let me show you another set of coffee art.

Look at this expert do it! The patterns appears by the way he pours the froth milk!

Cool ya, the last swipe of the pour creates the palm like design.

Hope you enjoyed today's post.
