This is one of the few traditional bakeries in Singapore. They produced the black crusted bread. This shop is located at Whampoa Drive and produce these breads for provision shops and coffee shops.
The shop is called Ghee Leong. Look at their also archaic signboard. Nice eh?
You can see racks and racks of these "chao tar" (burnt) top bread.
Do not judge a bread by its looks! Here is a close view.
Can you imagine eating the crust? No, it's not meant to be eaten!
They are to be sliced off! It looks like these!
They are then sliced and pack into bags. Sorry, I bought the bread but forgot to take photo of it! These will then become the 'kaya toast' that you get in many shops.
In tomorrow's post, I shall post more of the breads :-)
Bread lovers, stay tuned!

Foodies got to take care of their health!
Remember I was tagged some time ago, and one of the 5 things that about me is that I take blood test yearly?
Here's the photo of the nurse taking my blood. (with another nurse who graciously agreed to take photo for me! haha..)
This picture shows the 2nd tube of the 3 tubes been sucked out of me! The 1st tube is in the nurse's palm.
The first tube being 'sucked' out of me is available at my Singapore Daily Photo blog.

Estivo Gelateria @ Greenwood Avenue
Last night, friends and I had our monthly meet up and eat and celebrate people's birthday in that month. The 20 over of us had dinner at Peperoni Pizzeria and later search for a place that can fit so many of us to have cake and tea.
The place next door (yes right next door, who was very empty) said they had tea and desserts. This kind lady said they will prepare the tables for us. 1 minute later, another more 'senior' lady said they can't arrange a place that can fit 20 over of us, want us to sit separately. We kindly declined their offer and walked away.
Hey, just a look and you can see it can be done, guess if you ask employees they just can't be bothered, unless the boss is there, all of us thought it will be a different story. They could easily have gotten $100 over from us if they did a bit of work. Enuf said of them.
Anyway, we walked along Greenwood Avenue and saw a gelato place. Estivo Gelateria. Yey! everyone was happy. Asked if they can fit 20 of us, well, this place is much better, they said OK, shifted the tables around.
All very yummy flavours!
Prices are reasonable too!
This is what I had. This is one of the many cups ordered.
This is what I had. Choc Chip Peanut Butter something, plus Butterscotch something.
We also had an ice cream cake for the birthday boy.
Ok. More ice cream / gelato place, click on the Label Ice Cream below, Blogspot will list them all out :-)
We saw from their brochures they hold parties too. They are at 26 Greenwood Avenue, S 289224. Do a search for their phone numbers :-)

NUSS Guild House: Lou Yee Sang
Today our office had our annual CNY lunch. It was held at the Guild House at NUSS. (NUS Society)
There was a lion dance performance too. And these 'fireworks'. haha..
See what a mess it made to our table! Luckily our food was served a bit later, but our drinks, sauce, chilli etc, all gone!
The first dish as usual is Yee Sang for this occasion. The top orangy part is raw salmon. The rest are shredded carrots, cucumbers etc... with keropok!!! of course!!!
Oh yes, the fun part! "lou-ing" the yee sang, meaning to toss it in the air! The higher you toss it, the better!
The Yee Sang on my plate!
While 'lou-ing', you are suppose to be saying some auspicious chinese proverbs, and here are some of them. Yes, they had a list for us at our table. :-)
Have you 'lou' your yee sang yet? This is a practice that is only common in Singapore and some parts of Malaysia.

Loong Fatt Tao Sar Piah (Balestier)
Around a week ago, colleagues and I visited another fellow colleague who had just given birth at Thomson Medical Centre. After visiting them, we walked across the street to buy the famous Tao Sar Piah there.
There are many stalls there, but most people says the one by Loong Fatt's the best.
This is their box. It says they are the original and only outlet.
And also claimed to be the best. haha.. (it's printed on the side of the box)
This is how it looks like. We bought both the savoury and sweet versions. The ones with sesame seeds are the savoury ones.

Persimmons
For many people, persimmons are delicious fruits. Dried persimmons like these shown here are also very popular with people.
This hip uncle with a pony tail selling persimmons. The small little red plate is where the samples are. He will be snipping them into tiny pieces for everyone to try.
Zoom in for you all to see..
Just in case you can't see it, here's an even nearer picture.

Leg of Ham, Eastern/Chinese Style
If you have been following my other blog, Singapore Daily Photo by Keropok, you would have seen some of the Chinatown photos.
Here's some more, for Christmas we saw the western style leg of ham. In Chinatown for Chinese New Year, there's this Eastern Leg of Ham.
This is the vendor cutting that huge leg into smaller chunks.
Soup that's cooked with a very tiny bit of the ham taste very very good!

Home Made Jam Tarts
There's so many types of jam tarts being sold at supermarkets, last year we found one that's so nice and we bought lots of it and everyone realised it ran out. This year we did not see it on sale.
But it's ok. We have some home made jam tarts given to us by our cousin. Her mum made it.
Ming the Merciless from NYC says he wants some. Hmmm how?
