Wedding Dinner @ Orchard Hotel

Last nite (Sat nite), I was at a wedding dinner. Hmmm these pictures don't look very good. The place is so dark, and I did not want to keep using flash. Food so so lah, a bit on the salty side..

Wedding dinners is a time to catch up with old friends, and taking photos with friends instead of food right? Hey, you know who you are, I shall send you all the link to download the photos :-)

Anyway, some of the food photos, after all this is Singapura food eaten. :-p

Part of the Deluxe Combi, part of the Suckling Piggy.
(Hey, there's now a group call ALL Lard Lovers in Facebook. haha..)

Wedding couple are shark lovers, so no sharks fin.
Here's Braised Fish Maw Soup with Crabmeat and Dried Scallop

Sauteed Shrimp with Cashew Nut and Honey Pea.

Braised Sliced Abalone with Whole Conpoy and Spinach.

Fierce Garoupa staring at you! haha..
Steamed Garoupa in TeoChew Style.

Deep Fried Pork Ribs in "Jing Du" Style.

There's still: (with no photos, we were busy talking and chatting and taking human photos)
Braised broccoli with chinese mushroom.
Stewed Double Happiness Ee-Fu Noodles
Double Boiled Snow Fungus with Red Dates Tea

It was quite a fun night meeting up with friends from overseas who flew in.

Sarawak Kolo Mee & Laksa @ Blk 130, Jurong East

On Friday, a colleague said let's go for more authentic style Sarawak Kolo Mee. He says must be one cooked by someone who originates from Kuching and you can order in the Kuching lingo and they understand you. (haha.. he was hitting at this famous chain, where you try to order in the Kuching lingo, and they stare at you blankly).

Colleague has eaten quite a few times and as he and store owners are fellow Sarawakians, they bond well. haha.. I kinda like the texture of the noodles. Colleague said the noodles are imported from JB where there's a factory that produces the noodles up to the Sarawakian specification. (haiyo!)

Another colleague who prefers Sarawak Laksa ordered this.

It's the way most Kolo mee taste in Kuching, and not localised to local taste buds kind. If you like it authentic style, try this. If you like it localised with Abalone, go to the localized taste stall. haha...

This was recommended by a Sarawakian.
Blk 130, Jurong East. (just beside CPF, it's a small little stall in the kopitiam).

Claypot dishes @ Science Canteen, NUS

This week's the University Break, so its the best time to eat at the NUS Canteens! No students = no crowds! haha..

2 other colleagues and 1, we ordered 1 pot each and share. We also 'jia chai' and 'jia dan' on the rice.

The Tofu Claypot.

The chicken claypot. There are two kinds, when you want the dark one like this one, must say "Ji Hei de". Dark Chicken. haha... or else you will get the white one, which we do not quite like.

Beef Claypot.

The Rice with extras. Veg and Egg.

Food OK lah, its cheap and quick, one of the reasons we eat here :-)
The whole lot is less than $10.

Bak Chor Mee @ Dover Market & Food Centre

Two days ago, my lunch was at Dover Market. A colleague said that there's a new stall there and let's go and try try.

This must be the most attractive stall, the signboard is so clean and new. This place is going to be en-bloc soon, so it's interesting to find a stall still coming in here.

So so lah. Something different from the only remaining stalls at this place.
We were looking at the bowls collected, quite popular is seems.

We noticed something, we ordered the 3 diff kinds of noodles style on the signboard, but it all turn out the same! haha... $2 is a bit small for even a lady, $3 is ok. Colleagues who are Lard Lovers noticed they use fried lard pieces. haha...

Btw, anyone of you all in Facebook, colleagues are thinking of setting up a Lard Lovers Group. Would you all join in the group? LOL....

Ice3 (Ice Cube) @ Serangoon Gardens

After the big meal the other day at Ming Kee, we think we are cows and have different stomachs! We always have space reserved for drinks and desserts.

We made our way to Serangoon Gardens. The 'di dou sher' (local head snake, ie, pple staying there) said there's this place to go called Ice3 (ice cube). Game! Let's go...

The people there were quite helpful and arranged a long huge table that can fit so so so many of us. Thanks Ice3 staff.

How it looks outside.

You know, I usually dont post faces of my makan kakis, unless it is blurred or taken from the back like this. haha... The place looks cosy ya.

We started ordering and desserts came. Ice cream with waffles.

We have a NLB librarian amongst us. She just systematically cut up all the cubes to make it easier for us all to share! (hmm i am wondering.. the prev pic did not have a cherry, where did this one come from??)

This is called "make own crepe with nuts and toppings".

This is the Hawaii-5-0

This is quite famous here. The Mud Pie! Oh so yummy... It's called "Eyes Wide Open".

The more choc and oreo ice cream! It's called "Volcanic Eruption".

We also this which is called "Ring of Fire". Cool eh? I tell you, all of us devoured this ring so quickly. See all the different flavours? Any ice cream fan will love this!

We also had other drinks and common things, so not posting them up here.

Something I realise is that you noticed the ice cream is served not melted? Some places we go to the ice cream is already partially melted which really irritates!

Ming Kee Live Seafood @ 556 MacPherson Road (Part 2)

Continuation from yesterday's.....

We also had a fish. A very beautiful fish on our table! We were all quite amused with the standing fish! Steamed Teo Chew style.

It was big and you can see the amount of flesh! We really love it. You can just lick up the soup on the plate. haha...

For veggies, we had the 3 kind of eggs cooked with Nai Bai.

Aha! Why Momo wanted to come here for was for the Crab Mee Hoon!
We had 4 gigantic crabs, 2 per table like in this photo.

Big huge claws. We have a few crab lovers with us who thoroughly loved them!

We were a happy happy lot. The total bill was $610. Divided by 19 pple, $32 a person, decent.

Ming Kee Live Seafood @ 556 MacPherson Road

Last Saturday, we gave our friend Momo a surprise party. She was to go to Ming Kee with another friend (DKoh) to eat here because of the reviews they heard about this place. But... hey, the 18 other of us wants to eat too! So a plan was hatched.

We are going to surprise her and give her a treat here. With so many of us, we can order more food to try right? Birthday girl benefits, the rest of us too! *mua ha ha* Well, the planned worked! Two weeks of hard work paid off! She did not realize anything. haha...

The things we do, hiding below tables when she is spotted at the front coming in. 3 cameras were ready to snap photos!

So, what did we eat? The recommendation by the restaurant follows:
This is a 2 in 1 kind of dish. On one side is Guinness Stout Pork Ribs, oh now yummilicious!

On the other side is chicken. Can you imagine the taste yourself? :-p

Next it is Tian Ji (Frog legs) with Chicken Essence. Very nutritious dish!

You should try it! Really!

Next, it is baby squid that is steamed and topped with loads of garlic!
Half the table loved this, and haha... the other half can't stand the garlic.

Then we had homemade tofu with broccoli and mushroom. Wonderful!

By the way, we were split into 2 tables, so everything was replicated on the other table. Or else how to feed the 19 of us!

Coming up.... what is Ming Kee famous for?

Ja Jang Myeon @ Manna Korea, Takashimaya Food Village

Today, Sunday night is the last episode of the Korean Drama Series, Couple or Trouble (환상의 커플) also known as Fantasy Couple. Sis was sobbing away tonight as we were watching it. (It is shown on Starhub Cable, Channel 55, 10.30 pm, I am sure you can find the repeats timing on their website)

One thing about this show that made us very very hungry is the Ja Jang Myeon (Za Jiang Mien in Chinese). Every time Luo Shangshi orders and eats it, it makes us want to eat it too, especially the slurping sounds and the greedy looks on her face and the mess too!

When I told my sis, I 'buay tahan' go and eat it a few ago, she 'ooiii!' me, said never bring here to eat. You want to die ah... haha...

OK, this pic does not make it absolutely must eat. I think there are better ones out there too, maybe a visit to Korea!

It comes with some kimchi cabbage & cucumber.

It's a bit steep, but sometimes, when you die die want to eat it, you die die have to pay!

By the way, I think there's another fellow Singapore blogger who is a fan of Korean Sob series like my sis (ok ok like me too)! The Baker Who Cooks solves her craving by making the dish herself! View her recipe here.

Are you:
- having food cravings due to watching korean tv series?
- a korean tv fan too?

Mooncakes from : Li Bai (Sheraton) & Ritz-Carlton

Here are the other boxes that we got from vendors.

This one from Ritz Carlton.

Looks a bit dry right? Wonder vendor gave us fresh ones. haha...

The office had a favourite. We all voted this to be the best.
Sheraton's Li Bai has the one that suit our taste.

Nice box too.

The only box that we finish most of it.

Mooncakes from : Tung Lok & Meritus Mandarin

At our workplace, we get freebies from our hardware and software vendors. Of course, when we get them, we got to declare them with management first, in case we are accuse of favouring certain companies in our future tenders. haha...

Showing here today, two boxes of mooncakes.

This is Tung Luk's mooncakes. Yes, it has all the radio DJ faces from the local radio station. Our boss insist this box taste the best. We wonder why? haha...

Here's the inside. Individually packed.

This one is from Meritus Mandarin. The rest of us, all think this one from Meritus taste the best from all the diff one we received.

By just looking at the pastry texture you can tell right?

Do you like to eat mooncakes? You like these traditional baked ones, or do you like those 'snow skin' ones?

Chilli Padi Nonya Restaurant @ Joo Chiat Place (Part 2)

Continuation from yesterday's post.....

Next was the Rendang.

After that, my favourite peranakan dish. Babi Ponteh.

Another dish that only the brave ones dare to try. Petai Ikan Bilis. Do any of you like Petai? :-p

Now to the desserts.....
Pulut Hitam. Delicious looking eh? With all the coconut milk. For those who says coconut milk is bad, read up the latest reports! haha...

This is the normal chendol. As I post this now, I feel like having one now...

This is also chendol, but Cempedak Chendol. See the orangy yellowy thingy up there?

This one... Guess....
Durian Chendol. It's apparently a favourite for people who comes here.

This is the Sago Pudding. (My dessert)

Friend said, take photo of the bowl, it's pretty. So here it is...

After I stirred it, the bottom which is full of gula melaka brings out the sweetness. Yummmm...

Hope you find this enjoyable.

Chilli Padi Nonya Restaurant @ Joo Chiat Place

Every month, we have a group of friends that meet up every month to eat and celebrate each others birthday. (I think this sounds like a broken record). Anyway, this month, we had 3 person's birthday. We were wondering where to go, at first we wanted to go to Astons Prime, but in the end, the group ended up having Peranakan Food instead.

Someone said that they had eaten at someone's baby's first month celebration that had food catered from Chilli Padi. OK lor, we try this place.

As usual, letting the photos tell you the story. Food photographed as it appears on our table. Photos in the order of the food that arrived first.

Achar, we all liked it. On the table when I arrived... I was late by a few minutes, got lost in Joo Chiat! haha...

The Curry Assam Fish Head was first to arrive. Looks so pedas and tasty right?

Next comes the Nonya Chap Chye.

This is the Ngoh Hiang.

Ayam Buah Keluak, some people just love the buah. Not for everyone though. haha

Otah Otah, gua suka makan otah!

Sambal Sotong. No, eating sotong won't make you sotong one....

Hee Pioh Soup, Fish Maw Soup that was served in individual bowls for all of us. 13 bowls..

This is babi madu. Honey Pork. This was wallop up so fast!

More to come tomorrow...

If you are confused at times, in Singapore they call it Nonya food, but in Malaysia it is called Nyonya food. Why? I also tak tahu!

Porridge @ Beauty World Centre

This could possibly be the cheapest place to have porridge. Our family visit this place when we want to have cheap and quick food. We ate here on Sunday after church, which is nearby.

This old couple cooks food that is very grandparents time. Very simple and yet it brings you the comfort food feeling. You might also think they are still selling food at the prices of their era.

Zai Ye Shu Shi is located at the food court that is on the most top floor of Beauty World Centre.

You can have rice or porridge. We usually take the porridge.

We ordered 2 duck wings. Simple and nice tasting. No garnish etc...

The "kor kuay with eggs". (Bitter Gourd with eggs)

The '3 layer lor' meat. San Chen Rou.

There was only 2 vegs left, we ordered kangkong as well.

This is the "tau kee perr". (Bean Curd Skin)

This is tao pok and tah kuah in tao you. I like tao pok!

Guess how much it cost? $8 only. It feeds 4 of us. It reminds me of food that we ate when we were young. Simple. You can see we like things that have black soy sauce. haha..

The veg does not look very sparkly and shining because it is not starched with so much corn starch which is done by so many others. We like the taste like this.

Portions are a bit small lah, but you can order the Lamb Soup next door which is quite popular too.

View the location here at Earth@SG
Note: There's a Beauty World Centre and also a Beauty World Plaza. These are 2 different buildings :-)

The Blood Orange Sorbet. I did not get to eat it actually. It ran out! I had another sorbet.

Wait... There's more....

This is the main. Oxtail Parcel.

Next, the Passion Fruit symphony. 3 kinds on 1 plate.

The Souffle right in the passion fruit.

Yi Bao @ Holland Village (Previously Yee Cheong Yuen)

On Thursday arvo, colleague smsed, want to come HV for lunch? We said OK, since it's quite near and we can have our food cum meeting. (I can hear you say, yeah right..)

Anyway, we went to this shop that we have not had for a long time, realize that the name has changed too. What used to be Yee Cheong Yuen is now call Yi Bao. (I think same owners etc, coz the receipt still has the old name)

If you been there before, we had to queue and order at the counter top. Now, it's Crystal Jade style, with the piece of menu that acts as a table mat.

We were wondering to order individual portions or share the dishes, we being the gluttons, wanted to try everything, so order the dishes to share.

The Kailan we ordered. $5

The bean sprouts. $5

Beef Brisket (and we realize it has kailan as well) $5

We like this. Cold cold white skin chicken. The coldness makes it taste so good!
Half a chicken - $12

And each of us had a plate of hor fun. (yes with more kailan! haha..) $1.80

We also had a shui jiao tang, photo did not come out great, so not posting it. $4

Mooncakes and Pig baskets

What are these? These are pigs in basket. (猪笼) The cantonese calls it "jyu zai peng"

One colleague brought this to the office, so we had a 10 min break in the afternoon again when every's energy level is at the lowest. With the calorie boost, we were up again! haha..

These piglets stuff are usually available together with mooncakes. (If you have noticed in this blog, yes, the mooncake season is here again....) It is said that these piglets biscuits were created in the early days because of the leftover dough from making the mooncakes.

I guess many people are happy because of this innovative creation. Two of my colleagues love these more than mooncakes. I think I prefer mooncakes.

They are just dough, no fillings in them. Some make them dry, some more moist. It is up to your preference. While we were eating them, everyone commented on their favourites and how these stuff used to be free when you bought mooncakes. That bunch above, it cost $8.80 nowadays.

Oink oink!

Wow Wow West @ Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre

Colleagues and I, after reading about this place decided that we should come and try it. So, here we are at Bukit Merah View Food Centre. We realise that they are two parts of the Food Centre. But we found it.

A very friendly lady asked us what we wanted, she assured us that everything is nice.

Yesterday we had some western food too, but we were deceived by the pictures. They had nice pictures but when the food was served, it was nothing like it, it was a total disappointment.

This stall also had deceiving pictures. Looking at the pictures on the board, it does not look very nice right? But WAIT! The real thing is better! I shall let the following pictures tell. We were not disappointed today.

I had the Chicken Cutlet. It's huge. Comes with baked beans, coleslaw and thick fries. 2 of us ordered this, $4.50

Another 2 colleagues ordered the chicken chop. $4
Equally appetizing right?

One thing is the coleslaw comes in a huge portion and its cold too! Some places, the coleslaw has become room temperature if you know what I mean.

Another 2 colleagues ordered the Fish and Chips. $5

The prices are reasonable for its huge portions right? We were satisfied. The lady halfway through, also asked if we liked it. Interesting eh?

Dark Chocolate - how many percent? 75%, 76%

This is actually a present from my colleague. Few days ago when I walked into the office, I saw a bag on my table. I looked in, yey! Dark Chocolates. (Thanks!)

Scrutinizing it, we realise that there's Belgian Chocs, Holland Chocs and Swiss Chocs!

The last few days we have been eating bit by bit of it. We because a few of us in the office also are dark choc fans. Some find the 75% too bitter, some says it is still sweet. You can just imagine our argument lah.

The other day, I saw in Fairprice Finest that there's one pack that has 98% cocoa. I should have bought it and have another 'discussion' in office! haha...

Do you like dark chocolates?

Rong Guang BBQ Seafood @ Corner Ulu Pandan Rd / Clementi Rd

Sat night, sis had this urge to have supper, and said want to go to 'Big Drain' to eat. Big Drain is the referring to the Ulu Pandan River. haha... (This same place, I know some Pine Grove residents call it Big Tree instead, you tend to give nicknames to shop based on something there right?)

Anyway, this is what was ordered. This place used to serve Keropok, aiya, they have since changed it to Achar since some time ago.

People that come here always order the Crayfish. You got to try it!

The mantou that's fried. I personally prefer steamed mantou.

Also, the Mee Goreng here is a hot favourite too!

We also ordered a veg, but it did not turn out ok on the camera and I only took 1 shot. :-(

You can't miss this place, it's at the junction of Ulu Pandan Road and Clementi Road. Lots of parking.

Inagiku @ Raffles The Plaza Hotel

It's a makan weekend really. Guess this might be the most expensive Jap food I have eaten. A friend and I, we went to Inagiku coz we read it from Only Slightly Pretentious Food that its good.

Also, Chocolate Reindeer's husband whom we met at a Flogger meet, whom we also met says we got to try it. Leslie of IeatIshootIpost, whom we also met said that it was good too, but it was on someone's expense account. haha...

We arrived got seated and Err, not sure what to order, we just took the Set Dinner, it has everything to try right? We took the Edomae Tempura Set. Hmmm come to think about it, we were sitting at the Sushi bar, we should be ordering stuff from there right? But too late, next time maybe. How would we know? We were given the menu and so we ordered lah.

The appetizer arrived. Don't ask me the names of these, I was too distracted by the chef preparing such artful pieces for a couple a few seats away. It was just so entertaining just watching the chef prepare food.

This appetizer was some cold fish and its top with seaweed and onions etc that was very good!

Then came the sashimi set. I like the prawns best! Hard to describe, but it was just delicious, all of it! Hey it even comes with a small chrysanthemum! We had this question, why was this not served to us from the sushi bar counter where we were sitting, but it was carried in by the waitress. Hmm..... because we ordered the set so it is prepared in another kitchen? haha...

Then the tempura set is next. Prawns were good!

Now, this is interesting right? A teapot. Is tea the next dish? No.
It's actually soup! The top part of the teapot is a cup overturned.

The soup had prawns and mushroom. Here's a peek for you.

2nd dish of tempura was next. I think I can never fry tempura this well.
Those are fish behind. Good..

Next a bowl was placed in front of us. What is it?

It comes with this little bowl of very fine pickled seaweed.

Take the top off the bowl. More tempura stuff. Prawns and etc again. I like this!

The last dish was dessert and it is Musk melon. It was really very sweet.

I was playing around with this magnifying glass function of my camera, now you want to try this melon? Juicy eh?

OK. That was it. Nice meal.

If, we were to go there again, we will know what to order. haha.. We saw what others ordered while sitting at the sushi bar, and not set meals like us. Theirs was absolutely delicious looking! They all seem to know the chef and they could just order off their heads. Hmm...

The set was $160. If you used the Feed at Raffles card like we did, you can get 50% off for food. So, we had $160 off, and it was $193 after tea and the various taxes.

Tempted? Go try lah.

Sushi Tei @ Holland Village

By now you know, my colleagues and I, will find any occasion to go makan and celebrate anything. Of course with someone's birthday, sure got reason to eat.

We went 'yet' again to Sushi Tei. Not going to show those little plates from the conveyor belt thingy, too many already in this blog. Here are the extra ones we ordered.

Colleagues taste for food has kind of blended. We all seem to like same food nowadays. Here's the Unagi Kabayaki.

We also had meat gyoza. Very crisp on the outer side right?

We had assortment of sashimi.

One had soft shell crab handroll.

We had this Sukiyaki too. It's very salty and we love it! haha...

No, not wagyu, but we put these into the pot of boiling soup.

Quite a lot of stuff inside ya.

Hey, this Ika Sugatayaki is very delicious. Yum...

We also shared a Salmon Cha Soba.

OK. Enough photos of it.

On yes, one way to get discount here is to apply for the Sushi Tei JCB card. It comes with coupons and birthday discounts, our initial bill is suppose to be $155, but after disc etc, we only ended up paying $88! Good deal eh?

Birthday cake from TiramiSutra

A bunch of good mates gave me a surprise today or rather tonight! How very thoughtful and touching. They brought this funny looking thing out, err what's that? Haha! It's keropok with whip cream on top and raisins toppings. 1 candle was stuck on it!

And.... Many hands were trying to prevent the wind from blowing it off!
And.... I was as usual busy taking photos!

A greater surprise was for another friend, online nick is 'everyone's talking'. Her birthday is a few days before. She was suppose to join in to surprise me, but I guess she was even more surprised when a cup cake was taken out for her!

They sang us the First round of Happy Birthday songs.

Hmmm what are they going to do next? hopefully no sabo or anything. Then the real cake came out.
It's a very delicious cake from TiramiSutra. (check out www.tiramisutra.com)

This is our joint birthday cake. Would you like to try some too?

Mooncake Party with Oolong Tea in the office

This afternoon, a colleague organised a tea break called "Mooncake and Oolong Tea Party" in office. No moon in the office, we only have million dollar 'Sun' servers. haha...

Anyway, despite the business, all of us took a bit of time off to enjoy some food.
The mooncake being cut. Not sure how many pieces you all usually cut, we tried to be 'si wen' a bit today, so we requested to have it cut into 8 pieces.

The inside of Marriott Hotel's White Lotus Seed Paste with Macadamia Nuts.
Some pictures of the mooncakes here too.

It was absolutely yummy. It's not sweet until you will 'jelak' kind.

Most of us were not very environmental. We used styrofoam, but some came with own mugs.

Oh yes, we used tea bags. We had tea leaves from 'Wing Wah Hong Kong', but too lazy to brew them in a pot. :-)

You all have tiny tea parties for 30 mins or so in your office?

I don't know why, but tonite I ended up at Vivocity to have dinner. haha.. Sis said go somewhere not so ex lah. We were heading to the food court, but before got there, we just stopped in front of Jia Xiang. (which is just before the food court, we saw empty seats and our tired legs just stopped!)

Sis said she did not try it before, I said not exactly the same as we ate in Kuching you know. She said "Never mind lah, I want to eat."

We took the $6 bowl. Here it is.

It comes with a bowl of soup with 2 prawns and a few wontons.

Talk about Sarawak Kolo Mee, which one in Kuching do you think is the best? Let's hear from some Kuching pple if you visit here. hehe..

Ban Tong Seafood @ Ghim Moh Blk 11

For Sunday family makan nites, we sometimes comes here. It's the Coffee Shop at the end of Block 11. The coffeeshop used to be call Elijah, but now it's changed to name we don't know. So we still call this place Elijah.

Never took note of the name of the shop until I thought, why not post the photos up. It's called Ban Tong Seafood.

People usually call this when they are here. Cereal Crayfish or usually we call it Mai Pian Hay Poh. It's really yummy you know, eating crayfish without needing to peel the shells off!

Tonight's Sweet Potato leaves (fan su ye) look a bit different, but it still taste as good.

We always order familiar food right? So, this dish usually appears on our table too. Tofu on Hot plate.

This is the fish that we usually order too. Spicy spicy Nyonya style curry fish.

Happy Weekend!

Nasi Goreng @ Red Ginger, IMM

Saturday's lunch is a chop chop / snap snap lunch at IMM before I run some errants.

We like to grab some Fried Rice or Nasi Goreng at this place called Red Ginger on the ground floor of IMM. We usually have either Nasi Goreng Istimewa or Nasi Goreng Pattaya. Pattaya version has the rice wrapped up in a pouch made of eggs.

This is our lunch. Fried Rice with one chicken wing. Hmm it seems after the recent renovation the prices have gone up.
