CNY's Dinner @ Aunt's Kitchen

Aunt loves entertaining and we love being entertained. She cooked for another 'set' of relatives, and we were invited as well. It was another feast for she cooked what the guest wanted to eat. (ya, orders were placed. haha..)

Here's her version of Sweet and Sour pork. It's topped with pomegranates.

Sweet and Sour pork with pomegranates

Her rendang. Spicy and so tender.
Just tell the butcher you want it for cooking rendang and they will tell you which cuts of meat is good and they will cut it for you too.

The 'ngo hiong' that my cousin helped aunt rolled.
You can see the ingredients right, big chunks and full of prawns and pork.

Home made deep fried meat wraps

The Nai Bai stir fried.

The home made Sio Bak. The skin on top is extra crispy. :-)

This is the Duck Feet Web, Sea Cucumber, etc Mixed Dish.
Delicious.

Siam Kitchen @ Parkway Parade

This is a continuation after yesterday's Yee Sang.

The food we ordered was served after they cleared the big Yee Sang platter. We were already full after all the vegetables! Luckily we had foresight and ordered the following to be shared. It's might be difficult if you are out with friends or colleagues, but with your own family, it is easy. ;-)

The kind waitress gave us a plate each and we just scoop a bit each from this individual portion dishes. The Olive Rice, that was quite lovely, though a tiny bit oily.

Olive Rice

The Phad Thai's not bad too.

Seafood Phad Thai

The Thai Fried Chicken's not too shabby, but as you can see a bit oily.

Thai Chicken Wings

The salted fish bean sprout's salty. LOL. We ordered two bowls of white rice to eat with this.

Bean Sprouts with Dried Salted Fish

The Beef Soup Noodle's salty but quite flavourful. It has lots of bean sprouts which I like. :-)

Beef Noodles

The green curry's quite thick and nice too.

Green Curry

We had two bowls of individual Seafood Tom Yam soup to share.

Seafood Tom Yam Soup

Err, I am not a fan of this kind of pancake, so I shall not comment. ;-p
Maybe more prawns would be better?

Prawn Pancake

But I like the coconut ice cream. It was our cousin's order, but we all had a tiny scoop or two from her bowl.

Coconut Ice Cream

Eating tiny amounts of food from different plate can be quite filling!

Yee Sang @ Siam Kitchen

Was accompanying dad and mum and our uncle and aunty and cousin to visit our grandma's cousin at Marine Parade. This grandaunt can really really talk! Anyway, it was interesting listening to her stories. LOL...

After the annual visit, we thought we will have lunch nearby. We popped by Parkway Parade, and wondering around settled on Siam Kitchen.

We saw the Yee Sang and thought why not? So, here it is, it might be the first Yee Sang I had in a halal establishment. The waitress was a Malay and she read out the 'auspicious phrases' as she poured the ingredients over. She must have practiced her chinese! (We can invite our Malay friends here for Yee Sang!)

The colourful ingredients....

The Start...

The Salmon being added - "Nian nian you yu" (Abundance of leftover every year)

The Salmon added

The "oil" was poured - "Soon Soon Li Li" (Smooth sailing in the things that you do)
The "plum sauce" was poured - "Tian Tian Mi Mi" (Sweet as Honey)

The "oil" and "sauce" poured

The crunchy crackers poured - "Huang Jin Man Tang" (Gold Nuggets all over)
The pepper and spices. (I forgot what they said) haha...

The "golden nuggets" added

We then 'tossed' the salad. It might be the cleanest we ever had. No spillage and also the first time we finished everything. It's either we are really hungry or this mix was delicious. We never seem to have finished our Yee Sang before!

Served on a small platter

Chinese New Year Breakfast

I was not around in Singapore for the Lunar New Year. All the children and grandchildren traveled across the causeway to have reunion dinner back with parents and grandparents.

It's quite funny that we only get to see our other cousins back in Malaysia at grandma's place, though many of us live here in Singapore. We seldom visit each other face to face, but only exchange messages on Facebook (sigh...)

These yummy food photos in Malaysia wont be appearing here. haha.. Not eaten in Singapura. LOL...

Anyway, back in Singapore and we had this for breakfast. Bee Hoon with pig innards, duck web and abalone peppery soup.

Bee Hoon Soup

This is the traditional dish on my mum's / aunt's side. The "Pek Ker" (Rice Cakes) that the Heng Hua people have.

Tang Dian Wang @ Bukit Panjang Plaza

This was one of our family lunches we had one Sunday afternoon. We were at Bukit Panjang Plaza and was wondering what to eat and we saw this new place called Tang Dian Wang. (I think there was a restaurant with a different name the last time we were here) We decided to try it out.

Tang Dian Wang @ Bukit Panjang Plaza

The Shanghai Siew Mai. Shanghai Siew Mai's stuffed with glutinous rice.

Shanghai Siew Mai

We had two kinds of lotus leaf rice to feed the few of us.
This is the one with Lap Cheong (Chinese sausages). Half of us seem to like this.

Glutinous Rice with Chinese Sausage Wrapped in Lotus Leaf

The other half like this one instead. Also glutinous rice, but it has a fragrance of orange peel and it's pork pieces instead of sausages.

Glutinous Rice with Pork Wrapped in Lotus Leaf

Our cousin like the steamed chicken. She had a bowl of white rice to go with her favourite chicken. It's warm too.

Steamed Chicken

For the namesake of this place, we ordered their soup. The soup comes in this nice pots and they will serve us. This was the soup of the day. Old Cucumber Soup. Yummy.

Soup of the Day

We also had some dumplings. They are quite nice.

Dumplings

And Hae Zhor. (Prawn nuggets) They were quite good too. The inside's not dry at all, but very moist.

Hae Zhor

We also tried an orange chicken. Very fruity!

The 360 Restaurant and Bar @ East Coast Park

This was a birthday dinner we had few weeks ago. One friend wanted to try out The 360 Restaurant at East Coast Park, so we booked a place for 5.

The view is good here, but the food's so so only lah. You get to see skiers skiing in the lagoon. (Cable Skiing). We realise that most people were just enjoying their drinks here.

For the food, here's what we had:

Calamari Rings.

Chicken Wings

Fried Chicken Wings

Momo had the Cajun chicken. She did not really like it though.

Cajun Chicken

Dino the birthday girl had Fish and Chips.

Fish and Chips

Our two other friends had the Burger each. It looks good and huge.
But it's a tad too salty though.

The Burger

I had curry chicken. The curry's quite nice.

Old Hong Kong Kitchen @ Square 2 Novena

Ms Internal Security wanted to have dinner with Dino as Dino couldnt make it to dinner the last time we met. [Actually, i think its another opportunity to try out another place :P] But we all gladly agreed as we all wanted to try out new places too!

She suggested Old Hong Kong Kitchen as she said there is 10% disc when she flashed her work card, so off we go.

We were deciding what to eat. They have dishes, as well as congee, rice - if you wanted carbo. We picked 2 congees to try. This was nearer to me, so here it is. "Lai Wan" Style Congee. It has lots of ingredients and its very sweet. I like this one.

And its served with deep fried fish skin. Very popular in Hong Kong. This is very crispy and can be salty too. But this one is just right.

We saw Sweet and sour pork with Lychee and thought, hmm...how is that going to taste? So we ordered to try. Cant quite taste the lychee but its quite a twist to it.

Our friend said the carrot cake here is good, and must order. So we ordered carrot cake and it came fried with bean sprouts and eggs.

Lastly, our healthy thoughts told us we must order some vegetables. So we decided on kai lan with chinese herbs. Turns out to be a soup like thing with herbs on top. Very nice and different.

I was still hungry after all that! So i ordered a bo lo bun with pork. This is very crumbly at the top. Its so so.

Overall, it was a good meal.

Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe @ Orchard Cineleisure

Last week, went to watch Red Cliff 2 with a bunch of friends. The movie was at 7, so we could not have dinner first because everyone was rushing from work.

So after the movie, it was after nine, and we were all quite famish. (we still had appetite after all the bloodshed in the movie. haha..) We did not want to walk around, and the nearest food place that can seat the 10 of us was Xin Wang.

Just the serviette ;-)
There are the 10 of us, but not everything we ordered was err nice. Everyone had lots of complaints and funny looks when the food came. But anyway, here's some of the food photos.

This curry is nice, thick and fragrant. Yes, only the curry. LOL...
The chicken, they are kind of tasteless. We passed the chicken around to a few person, and those who tried it said this chicken's most probably boiled separately and added in later. Sigh..

Err, curry chicken.

Well, the curry is not too bad, so you can still eat the curry (without the chicken) with rice.

Rice with Curry Chicken

Or if you like their soft bread. This bread is soft and nice and it sucks the curry like a piece of sponge. :-)

Bread for the Curry Chicken

This peanut butter toast looks nicer. The person who ate it did not complain, so should be good.

Peanut Butter Toast

This is what the 4 of us at one corner shared. The "ice kacang". (Forgot the name on the menu).
It's really huge! The people around us were looking at it.

The "Ice Kacang"

Not sure about you all, but we are one of those who like to play with out food.
We pretend our spoons are excavators and we dig holes all around. This is the tunnel part.

The "Ice Kacang"

This is the other side of the ice kacang. Our other friend digs from the top down. :-)

The "Ice Kacang"

Then suddenly, the structure gave way, and our ice kacang collapsed! Aiyah!

The "Ice Kacang"

Think this place is ok for desserts and toast. For food in this branch, only if you are really hungry. There's a lot of people here because it closes late. (24 hours on weekends)

We observed something though. When we went in, I think the average age of the people dining must have gone up by 5 years. haha...

Snacking in Office for CNY...

Few days ago, one of our colleagues decided that we shall have our own little snack time in office. Not sure about you, but the vendors that usually buy us Bak Kwa etc did not give anything this year! (Everyone knows why...)

But we have a tiny session, half and hour to chit chat a bit. The Bak Kwa. Yum Yum..
This colleague is a Bee Cheng Hiang fan. She loves everything from BCH. We being gluttons don't mind.

It's a bit oily, but Bak Kwa during the CNY season all 'drop standard'. They have too much to BBQ in such a short time. Also, depending on the branch you buy it from, the quality varies. It all depends on the person BBQ-ing it.

Bak Kwa - BBQ Pork Slices

Then some cookies too. This is the raisin cookies.

Raisin Cookies

Looks like a mess, but once you start, you can't seem to stop. We just ate and chat. It was almost all gone in a few mins!

Raisin Cookies

This was nice too..

Meat floss wrapped with Seaweed

It's seaweed with meat floss inside. Crispy outside, soft meat floss inside. Addictive too!

Thai Express @ West Coast Plaza

From yesterday's post, you can guess that we went to West Coast Plaza for lunch. We were wondering where to go, and somehow someone said Thai Express, and all of us just nodded and walked towards the shop. LOL...

The complimentary papaya salad when you tell them you are paying by a DBS card. We asked if we could swap it for something else, the answer is no. :-P

Papaya Salad

Here's what the whole group of us ate:
"Puk" had the basil chicken. It arrived first and everyone just looked at it salivating. Looks good right?

Basil Chicken

"Almond Jelly" had the seafood Phad Thai. Looks delicious too ya?

Seafood Phad Thai

"Pirate" had the green curry with rice. He did not finish his curry, but the rest of us finished it up. hehe...

Green Curry

This is what I ate. The Honey Chicken. Quite nicely done!

Chicken

The Crispy Drumlettes with Lemon Sauce that we shared.

Drummets

"Ms Healthy" had the Omelette with rice.

Omelette Rice

"Old Cat" had the spicy tom yam fried rice. A few weeks ago, we had a meal at Thai Express too, that time, "puk" ordered this and said it was not spicy. But this order today sure was spicy, coz "Old Cat" was sweating while he was eating!

And.. the famous Thai Express Tom Yam Soup. The soup's clear but it's one of the most fiery and potent soup you can drink.

Valrhona Warm Chocolate Cake @ Bakerzin

Last Saturday, we celebrated "Dino's" birthday. It was a sunset dinner by the lake in the east. Interesting eh? Anyway, after dinner, we thought we would like to go somewhere else for more dessert.

Dino suggested Bakerzin because she had the Valrhona Warm Chocolate Cake just the day before. It was also on 'specials' at only $4.90 instead of the usual $9.80 for the month of January. We were tempted.

Wondering where is the nearest outlet to where we were, we 'googled' for their website via our mobile phones and got quite frustrated with Bakerzin's website. It's not mobile phone browser friendly at all. Anyway, we decided to go to Millenia Walk as it was the nearest and there's parking there.

The people at this outlet seems to enthusiastic and friendly. They all had the "I'm New" batch and they were trying their very best to make us really welcome. We were. :-)

We sat down and ordered 5 Warm Chocolate Cake. 5? Yes, 5. We asked if we are allowed to order the 5 cheap deals things only? Yes of course they said. Tell others too.

You got to be patient because you need to wait 10 mins for them to 'warm' it. But it's worth the wait. After a while, you can smell the chocolate from their ovens and you know your cake's coming!

Warm Chocolate Cake

Here's photo of 2 out of the 5 sets. The above is how it looks with the deco on the sides.
The below is the eye level for you to imagine the smell and taste of it by looking straight into it. ;-)

Warm Chocolate Cake

Remember, I said the people at this branch's really nice? We told them when they served our first plate that it's Dino's birthday. They said, the next plate will be special. They had a candle and also wrote Happy Birthday with chocolate on the side of the next plate. It was so beautiful.

Sorry, the photo of beautiful plate had Dino's face on it. Photo with faces can't clear censorship. :-)

This is my cake / dessert.

Warm Chocolate Cake

Ice cream melts very quickly on warm cake. Look at the flowing valrhona chocolate centre!
Delicious.

Continuation of yesterday's post.

The Salad.

Salad

We also ordered the soups. This is the vegetable miso soup. I like this.

Vegetable Miso Soup

If you like salmon fish head, you might like the Salmon Fish Head Soup. It's almost similar to the vegetable soup, except it's more fishy. LOL

Salmon Head Soup

For our carbo, we had the garlic fried rice. Very pungent smell of garlic. Yummy.

Garlic Fried Rice

This is Cawanmushi.

Chawan Mushi

We were already quite full, but since we originally wanted to have Teppanyaki, so we ordered it.
The beef teppanyaki. Medium Rare and delicious.

Beef Teppanyaki

We also had the sotong, prawns and scallops. The smell makes you hungry again. :-)

Seafood Teppanyaki

Aunt said she wants to eat at least one Shishamo, so we ordered one of it. LOL

Fried Shishamo

We ended our meal with the Green Tea ice cream.

Green Tea Ice Cream

So stuffed with food after the meal. This place's not bad actually.

We had the lunch ala carte buffet. Contact them for the pricing, uncle paid for lunch and I could not remember the price.

Last Sunday, our cousin wanted to have Teppanyaki. We were at IMM and our cousin knew where she wanted to eat.

While looking at the Teppanyaki menu, we realise it is more worth it to have the Ala Carte Buffet. The Ala Carte buffet includes Teppanyaki dishes too. ;-)

Here's Part I of what we ate:
The Sashimi Platter. Had a few platters of these. We ordered two person's serving to try if it's nice first. It came out quite fresh, so we ordered the two other person's share.

Sashimi Platter

The Stir Fried Buta (Pork). It was very fragrant and delicious.

Stir Fried Buta

We had the beef version of it too.

Stir Fried Beef

We also shared the Saba too. It was not that fishy. (for the day we ate it).
Nice to eat it while it's hot.

Grilled Saba

Like many buffet places nowdays, there are many items that is 'one order' only. This teriyaki cod's one of them. Oh the Mix Sashimi platter is 'one order' too. But you can order as much Salmon and Tuna though.

Teriyaki Cod

This is the very salty chicken wings. It's chicken wings deep fried and sprinkled with salt. Salt lovers will like it.

The fried tofu.

The soft shell crab.

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao @ Holland Village

Everyone was tired after a hectic day. I texted my sis if she's having dinner, hoping she's at home and there's dinner at home. She replied that she's having dinner with her colleague at one of the 'markets' around. I can join them, but I got to treat them dinner. I said OK and asked which 'market'. They decided on the Holland V market.

But when I was reaching, got a text message that said that the destination's changed. "CJLMXLB, go upstairs, immediately turn left." They decided to eat something nicer and not in the warm food centre. The tired ladies must have been too tired to walk.

What did we have for dinner?
We had 1 steamer of 5 Xiao Long Bao. $4.50

Also, one veg to share, the Long Beans with Minced Pork. $9.20
The slightly charred beans smells and taste so good. (Or are we extremely hungry?).
Minced Pork, bits of chilli, chives and I think olive leaves too. It was delightful.

Long Beans with Micn Pork

We each ordered a noodle dish for ourselves.

Sis had the Fried Noodle with Beef and Mushroom. $11.00
She always like dishes like this so she said it was good.

Fried Noodle with Beef and Mushroom

I had the ultra spicy dish. It's called Spicy Shredded Chicken with Dragon Beard La Mian. $7.80
This is a cold dish. Both the noodles and chicken's cold and it taste wonderful. It's the Ma La chicken, so it's not for the faint hearted. Look at the chilli oil and the chilli seeds!

It's called Shredded Chicken, but it's actually not shredded as you can see. :-)
Dragon Beard La Mian's the very fine hand pulled noodles. Almost "mee-suah" like. Yummy.

Spicy Shredded Chicken with Dragon Beard La Mian

Ms Dubai-HV had the Spicy and Sour La Mian. $7.80
She chose this because she did not want any meat.

Spicy and Sour Soup La Mian

Changed of venue was good. Sis was happy. She had to go home and work through the night to finish up her report. Poor girl...

Fortune Feast @ KFC

Yes, I do eat KFC and no, this is not a sponsored post. :-)

The TV advertisement got into me, and I wanted to eat Fried Chicken. So, yesterday, Momo, Sis and I had the Fortune Feast. $28.80.

The advertisement had a bucket overflowing with chicken. But it sure did not fill this bucket that I had. :-)

The fortune feast bucket.

It still had 8 pieces. We had a mix of original and crispy. Lots of drumsticks inside because we did not want to wait for the next batch to be ready.

8 pieces of chicken. (Original and Spicy)

The feast comes with this Golden Delights Snack Platter.

Golden Delights Snack Platter

There's pop corn chicken (which is the nicest of the lot here), Golden Shrimp Coins (too little shrimp but more batter taste), and Crispy Strips.

Popcorn Chicken, Golden Shrimp Coins, Crispy Strips

The coleslaw. Medium. I think they should upgrade it to a large.

Coleslaw

A medium potato. Anyone of you think that the sauce is different nowadays? I thought they use to taste nicer.

Mash Potato

They initially forgot these Hong Baos. After eating halfway, I remembered, one of the reason I wanted to eat KFC was because I was 'tempted' by their advert that says I could win $888. (ya right... LOL)

Lucky Hong Bao

What did I get? $1 off a 2 pcs meal.
In fact, all 4 Hong Baos were the $1 off kind. (I guess they did not shuffle the cards? haha)

Wow, I won something..

The advert has 2 grandparents, dad, mum and daughter having the meal. This will only feed 3 persons. Drinks not included.

Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant @ Quality Hotel, Balestier for LoveSharks.sg event.

Have you heard of LoveSharks? It's a local shark protectionist group that aims to educate and bring awareness that sharks are friends and not food.

If you have eaten sharksfin recently, you would have played a part in killing of the thousands of sharks that are killed for their fins.

Want to know how you can save the sharks? Hop over to LoveSharks' blog site that brings you news about Sharks at http://lovesharks.sg/

The folks at LoveSharks hosted the media and a few food bloggers to a meal to remind us that you and I can start loving sharks by not eating them! They are alternatives to sharks fin. "Mock Fins" are available if you want to have the texture of sharks fin in your soup or dishes.

The dinner's a vegetarian dinner at Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant at Balestier Road. This meal's available as a set meal available at this restaurant for the coming Chinese New Year festivities.

We started the meal with a vegetarian Prosperity Yu Sheng. Salmon's replaced with mock meat that tasted like a firmer version of fish cakes.

Prosperity Vegetarian Yu Sheng

Next's the Vegetarian Sharks Fin Soup. The replacement mock fins not as crunchy as sharks fin, but we know one less shark is killed because we ate mock fins. The soup's not as tasty though. You need the vinegar and maybe pickled green chilli (that's what I did) to make it taste better.

Vegetarian Shark's Fin soup

Next dish served was Caltrops with Hairy Mushroom. This dish has the mock fins as well on top.

Caltrops with Hairy Mushroom

What are caltrops? It's also known as Water Chestnuts. They look a miniature version of black bull horns. I used to think they were horns when I was a kid! haha...

Caltrops with Hairy Mushroom

The Spicy Pan-fried Vegetarian Fish was served next. I would have prefered it without the spicy capsicum and chilli mix on top. They are tofu that suppose to replace cod fish.

Spicy Pan-fried Vegetarian Fish

The next dish, came served in ice cream cones. Fresh Mushrooms with Asparagus in Ice Cream Cones. The mushroom and asparagus quite all right, but ice cream cones should only go with ice cream. :-)

Fresh Mushrooms with Asparagus in Ice Cream Cones

Oh the next dish quite unique. It's Fruity Almond Rolls and Vegetarian Otah.

Otah's not the thing that's unique, but the Rolls are. It has Nangka (Jackfruit), Banana and Mock Crab sticks in it. Maybe they should use higher heat to quickly deep fry it. It's a bit drenched with oil.

Fruity Almond Rolls and Vegetarian Otah

Everyone's favourite it seems. The next dish was Stewed Golden Fungus with Vegetarian Tenderloin. I love this dish very much. If I were to come back here, I would order this again. Daikon, chestnuts, mushrooms, carrot and the vegetarian equivalent of sea cucumber and tendons.

Stewed Golden Fungus with Vegetarian Tenderloin

Little rice balls was served next. I wonder how they replicate the real chicken rice balls into these mock chicken rice balls. It was very fragrant but a tad oily.

Mock Chicken Rice Ball

The rice ball's good, but not the mock chicken. Forget the chicken, the rice balls goes well with the sauce from the previous dish.

Mock Chicken with Mock Chicken Rice ball

Dinner ended with a very pleasant dessert. This is Osmanthus Pudding with Xue Lian.
I am not sure how to describe it, but I just like it!

Osmanthus pudding with xue lian

Thanks to the folks at lovesharks for this meal. This set dinner's for 10 costs S$358++ and it's available at Lotus.

My photos are mostly close up photos. To see the dishes in all their splendour or from a different view/angle, visit my fellow food blogger's site who joined us for dinner. They brought their high end huge cameras. :-)

Al-Ameen Eating House @ Bukit Timah

On the stretch of Cheong Chin Nam Road, Al-Ameen must be one of the busiest shops around. After the peranakan food the other day, one of our dear friend who is perpetually hungry wanted to eat some more. So from Beauty World Centre we crossed the road to Al-Ameen.

We ordered 3 ice kachang, but 'tak boleh' lah, the ice kacang here. Too much colouring. Also the red bean taste funny. 3 of us ate one bean each only. LOL...

But the Naan here is not too bad. This is the Cheese Naan. Looks tempting?

Cheese Naan

When our friend ordered, he was asked, you want any sauce? He said yes, Dahl please. LOL
So they served a huge portion, a thick meal portion of it. We were wondering, wow, this is different from the watery version elsewhere. It was only when he went to pay that he realised, it's the meal portion and it's $3. LOL....

Dahl Sauce

We were already quite full, but he ordered this huge plate of Indian Rojak to share.

Indian Rojak

I could not eat anymore. I only had 2 or 3 pieces of stuff only.

Indian Rojak

The sauce is quite ok.

Indian Rojak Sauce

This place served so many kinds of food. Got to come back to try other stuff.
(and also avoid some stuff too)

Dulukala Peranakan Restaurant @ Beauty World Centre

Yesterday's dinner was Peranakan food with two other friends. One of them alighted from his 'transport service' at Rifle Range Road. The other friend has been obsessed with the recently ended drama, The Little Nyonya, so, we thought we shall try Dulukala at Beauty World.

It seems that after the drama, Peranakan restaurants all over has been quite popular. When we arrive the place was empty, but after a while, people started flowing in that those who came in a bit later had to be turned away because there's no tables left.

It has been a long long time since I came here.

Dulukala Peranakan Restaurant

Here's what we had:
The belachan chilli.

Belachan Chilli

The ladies fingers fried with ikan bilis. $6.

When I cook this at home, it's always slimy, but the version here is not. (I wonder how they do it.) It is cooked with high heat, so there's this 'wok hei' taste and it smells and taste very good!

Fried Ladies Finger

We wanted Itik Tim, but they came back to us saying they do not have it. (run out or not available? never mind..)
So we had the Bakwan Kepiting instead. $7

Bakwan Kepiting

The Babi Ponteh $6.50. I like Babi Ponteh from anywhere. I think I like stuff that has 'tao chio'.

Babi Ponteh

The Chinchalok Egg. $5. One of my favourites.
Chinchalok is made from Fermented Shrimp so it's an acquired taste. :-)

Chinchalok Egg

The portions are a bit small, so you got to order more dishes if you are a big eater. It's a very family business, so they take some time to prepare the dishes, so you got to be really patient.

Noodles @ Science Canteen, NUS

We have been having 'cheap eats' lunch at the NUS Canteen this whole week. The students are not coming in till next week, so there's still seating places.

It seems people are willing to queue for is value for money. The noodle stall's queue seems to be longer than the 'chinese mixed rice' queue!

Colleague's lunch: The chicken wings noodles with 'jia cai, jia dan' (extra vegetables and egg). Around $3.

Chicken Wing Noodles with extra veg and egg

This is what I had. "Pai Gu Kuo Tiao, gan, bu yao la, yao fan qie" (I hope that's correct).
Pork Rib Rice Noodles, Dry version, No Sambal, Yes to tomato sauce. $2.
I love add in pickled green chilli and minced garlic. Give it a good mix and it taste yummy!

Colleagues and I eaten so often here, that we have eaten all kinds of permutations of available!

OldTown White Coffee @ Bukit Timah

Got a friend that has been going to this outlet to eat / study the last few weeks. Everytime he's here, he'll sms us to join him for the dinner part. Usually, I will be too lazy to get out and meet him for coffee.

Yesterday, I thought I should meet up. So, Momo, Sis and I met up with 'Gorilla'. LOL

OldTown White Coffee

It was not only coffee today, it was for dinner. I had the Nasi Lemak Special. $5.50. Sis got the same thing. I get tempted by sambal. :-p

Nasi Lemak Special

They are quite generous with their kacang and ikan bilis and they have nice cold cucumbers.

Nasi Lemak Special

Momo and Gorilla had the Nasi Rendang Set. $7.90 Just replace the fried chicken, hard boiled egg, kacang and ikan bilis with a big chicken rendang that you get this.

Nasi Rendang Chicken

This photo does not show you the size of the chicken, but it is a huge drumstick.

Nasi Rendang Chicken

Gorilla must be hungry. After his Nasi Rendang, he ordered a Curry Chicken Toast. $6.50
The more we look at him eat, the more tempting his chicken curry drumstick becomes. But we were too full to eat it anyway. So gorilla enjoyed himself eating it while telling us stories.

Curry Chicken

The toast is the brown bread toast. 3 pieces of it.

Brown Toast for Curry Chicken

Oh, the usual drinks are ordered. White Coffee and Black Coffee. $2 each.

Kampong Fried Chicken @ 34 Dover Road

This was part of lunch few days ago. Someone told someone that told someone that the Fried Chicken at the coffee shop beside Dover Market is quite nice.

So we decided we shall try it though it was like 3rd or 4th hand information. LOL.
Hmmm, after a walk in the extremely hot weather these few days, we thought that it was not wise to eat fried chicken. *heaty!*

So, we ordered our porridge, mixed rice, noodles etc. But since we are here, we shall try it. So 'wire' ordered the spring chicken to share. $6.50.

The Stall and Price

It's a whole bird that was deep fried. Taste wise it is not too shabby. It's crispy, and I think it was a little salty that's why it taste nice. :-)

We thought it look quite large for a spring chicken. Then when we rip it apart to eat, we realise it's a spring chicken after all. The bird has been sliced to flatten it out so that it cooks more evenly.

The Spring Chicken

If you noticed, all of us had "Jia Jia Liang Cha" to cool down. LOL...

I personally prefer the Filipino fried chicken at Lau Pa Sat. But this one ok lah. If you like crispy chicken.

Top Seafood @ Toh Yi Estate

This is a recent discovery. It is a place that we have been having many dinner when no one wants to cook. We find the food here quite nice and the price is very reasonable too.

Our cousins came over few days ago and we came to place to have dinner. The black KL Hokkien Mee. For those who loves the lardy taste, they sure are generous with it. Nice.

KL Hokkien Mee

The soup of the day, water cress soup.

Water Cress Soup

It's carbo day for all the carbo lovers. Fried Rice...

Fried Rice

We tried a few of the pork stuff, but still the pork rib King is the best. (We don't like their sweet and sour pork, haha..)

Pork Rib King

The sambal kangkong. It's very spicy and the wok hei's there.

Sambal Kangkong

The Fried Chicken Thai Style is also quite nice.

Fried Chicken with Thai Chilli

Top it all off, the last carbo of the night. A big plate of Hor Fun. (think we should have ordered the small instead. too much!)

Hor Fun

Everytime we pass by this place, there's always a long queue with people ta-powing their Hor Fun and other noodles. Most of the above are medium size, except Hor Fun large and two big bowls of soup. It was $67. It fed 6 adults 2 teens and 1 kid and we can't really finish. So order less carbo. :-)

All Time Favourites Kopitiam @ IMM

One of the quick lunches that we had over the weekend. We were at IMM for some window shopping. When asked what to eat, the answer was "without much waiting time place" as we were all kinda hungry.

We thought of having Nasi Goreng at the corner ground floor shop but decided not to waste our money and time there because the food's horrible and they refuse to acknowledge though we told him what the problem was. Oh well, we walked past and realise many people agree with us. There's noticebly less people there now. (only suckers still go there lol)

We decided to have Chicken Rice instead. It's near the QB Haircut outlet. You can see the word Kopitiam. The full name's All Time Favourites Kopitiam.

The chicken's here not too bad. We can see many people ordering the chicken rice too. This is the half a soy sauce chicken.

Half a chicken.

We added a piece of tofu.

Lor Tofu

Plus a sidedish of BBQ Meat. This is so so only lah.

The Char Siu.

They also serve herbal soup that has chicken feet. The soup's quite nice if you like the herbal taste. Chicken feet boiled in the soup makes it really nice.

The chicken feet and herbal soup

We had 5 bowls of rice.

The chicken rice

I think it was around $28 for the above.

Choupinette @ Bukit Timah Road

Remember the wedding lunch the other day? After such a filling lunch a few people thought that we should go for coffee. There's always room for some drinks no matter how full you are. So during coffee, Eggs Benedict was suddenly brought up.

Someone said we should go meet for breakfast and let's have Eggs Benedict at Choupinette. The guy who has become our unofficial outing organizer was tasked to send out email to see who will be interested. As usual, he passes the task to his sub committee to do it. (faints!) Anyway, the sub-committee was efficient and within 24 hours, an email was sent out.

We met for breakfast this morning. It's beside Coronation Plaza along Bukit Timah Road.

Choupinette

So the following is what the 7 of us had for breakfast.
All of us had the sets, so they come with a glass of juice and also a hot drink.

Person 1 had scramble eggs with sausage. $18

Scramble Eggs, tomato, sausage and bread

Person 2 had Eggs Florentine. $20

Eggs Florentine sauce

Person 3 had the Eggs Benedict. $20

Eggs Benedict

Person 4 had the Eggs Royale. $21

Eggs Royale

Person 5 had the poached eggs with chilli pork sausage. $18

Poach Eggs with sausage, tomato and bread

Person 6 and 7 both had Eggs Benedict too. $20

Eggs Benedict

Persons 1 to 7 shared a baguette. $2.80

Baguette

That was very delicious when you spread it with loads of butter and jam. ahh....

Jam and Butter

So what's Eggs Benedict?
Eggs Benedict is a dish that consists of a half of a muffin, topped with ham or bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce.

There are variations of it and you can see above. Replace ham with spinach and you have Eggs Florentine. Replace ham with smoked salmon and you have Eggs Royale. If you want to read more, hop over to Wikipedia.

This is not just an Eggs Benedict place. We came here just to satisfy cravings for Eggs Benedict. They have pastries and desserts that are famous too. Hop over to fellow food blogger LadyIronChef to see what he and his group of friends had recently.

Oh ya, some reviews of this place says the poach eggs are all nicely done with the yokes all soft and flowing. For the 6 sets above that had poach eggs, only 3 sets fit the criteria. Also, to get eggs shaped so nicely, the secret is to have vinegar in the boiling water when you poach the eggs, they were probably a bit generous with the vinegar today. The eggs tasted a little too vinegarish.

Vegetarian Food @ Holland Drive Food Centre

We wanted to go to Holland Village to collect my 'just renewed' Sushi Tei card, but there was no parking. So Momo and I decided to just forget about eating there. We went to Holland Drive Food Centre instead.

To have the ultra cheap $2 meal.
Sorry, the first photo is blurry, it focused on the man at the side instead! I took only 1 photo. haha..

The Stall at #02-26 Holland Drive Food Centre

These are the two plates we ordered. It is one of the most filling meal you can have for $2.
Don't think it is healthy though. But the crispy 'roast goose' (tofu / beancurd skin) sure is delicious.

If you are wondering, this is mock vegetarian food, the crispy tofu skin is suppose to represent "sao er" (roast goose). Does it look like it at all? LOL...

Plate 1

I don't fancy mock 'cha shao' (bbq meat). I prefer the real thing. Anyone knows what the brown pieces is suppose to represent? :-)

Plate 2

The thing I like are actually the cabbage, pickled green chilli and crispy tofu skin. They give a lot of bee hoon, so it is super filling.

Noticed that they have gone back to using washable plates instead of disposable Styrofoam plates. Looks like they are turning greenie too.

Botejyu @ Liang Court

A very Happy and Blessed 2009 to all of you.

The first meal for the people in our family is also known as the "Last Supper". At around 12 midnight, we had the Holy Communion in Church, part of the Watch Night service. It's a piece of wafer with a little glass of wine.

This is dinner on the first day of 2009. We had Omus and Okos at Botejyu at Liang Court.

Botejyu at Liang Court

Sis seems to love pumpkin nowadays. When she saw this on the menu, she ordered it. Pumpkin Tempura. $3.80

Pumpkin Tempura

Sis, Momo and I ordered an item each. When the food came, we ended up sharing instead.

I chose the Pork Omu. We think this is the nicest of the 3 things we ordered.

Pork Omu-Soba

This is the Moonlight Oko that Momo ordered. When the person served us he said, you guys must be very lucky. (huh?) He said it's the first time he served this dish with an egg that has double yoke. Oh... :-)

Moonlight Okos

There's 3 tiny slices of pork, some prawns and other seafood in it.

Moonlight Okos

Sis ordered the Pork Oko. The pattern on it looks beautiful ya?

Pork Okos

You see the pork slices when you cut it. It was OK. For people who like beautiful food. :-)
