Ben & Jerry's @ VivoCity

One of our favourite ice cream. We are having less of this nowadays to save on calories, but every now and then we do indulge in it. ;-)

(ya, 'ice' told me before it has some ingredients that are not so pronounceable, but... favourites are hard to change. lol)

Dian Xiao Er @ West Coast Plaza

We have one colleague who likes to ask us to go have lunch at West Coast Plaza. So after some persuasion, we were all convinced to go there for lunch.

So, here we are at Dian Xiao Er. We realised something, if you come here before 12 noon, you get some discount off too. (Any discount is good at this kind of economy. )

Dian Xiao Er

We had 7 of us, so we opted for the set meal. Depending on the number of people, the number of dishes increases. Quite interesting.

Here's our set meal:
Their legendary Herbal Roast Duck. A bit sweet but we love it.

Herbal Roast Duck

The Braised Mushroom in Chinese Wine. This is quite delicious.

Braised Mushroom in Chinese Wine

Fish Maw Thick Soup with Seafood.

Fish Maw Thick Soup with Seafood

Stir Fried Lotus Roots with Macadamia Nuts. This vegetable dish is quite nice.

Stir Fried Lotus Roots with Macadamia Nuts

The 2 eggs with vegetables dish.

2 Eggs with Vegetables

Old Style Steam Fish Slice. I like this because of the 'sze chuan' vegetable strips on it.

Old Style Steam Fish Sauce

For dessert, Gui Ling Gao.

Penang Place @ International Business Park

More goodbye dinner for our brother. (It's as if he's going to starve overseas).
Uncle and aunty arranged for us to have Penang food at Penang Place at International Business Park. (near IMM).

Penang Place

We always enjoy eating here because the food's nice and it suits our taste. But we usually come here at night, so the photos are dark, blur and grainy. Never mind the photos, the food's to our liking, so that is what matters.

This time, most of us started with the soup. The soup's Herbal Duck soup. It's quite delicious. (Need to have self control and not drink too much, else there's no room for other food!)

Herbal Duck Soup

Next I had the Nasi Lemak. Had a little bit of everything. Yes, a tiny bit only.
Lor Bak, Ikan Bilis, Sambal, Ladies Finger, Hae Bee Hiam, Acar, Spring Roll, etc....
Everything was nice, except maybe today, the springroll has something missing? Hmm

Nasi Lemak

This place is quite famous for its Fried Kuay Teow. This is plate 1 of the 5 ot 6 servings we all shared. During peak hour, ie 6.30pm they serve it on the buffet table. We went there around 7.30, so this time, you can place your order and they fry a fresh plate just for you.

Penang Fried Kway Teow

The satay, fried chicken, beef rendang, otak and mix vegetable. Satay's really nice. We all seem to like the vege a lot. (Think because it's with lots of garlic...)

Satay, Fried Chicken, Rendang, Otak, Mix Veg

The Hae Mee (Prawn noodle) soup. The soup's rich and if you add the sambal in, yummy!

Penang Hae Mee

The Penang Laksa. They will boil the noodles in front of you and add in the laksa soup. You will then top it with the different condiments you like. I hadd all the condiments, a bit of everything and less than usual amount of prawn paste (hae kor). It's nice nice nice. (Spicy spicy spicy too).

Our cousin had like 3 bowls of it. Recently she's begining to take more and more spicy stuff!

Penang Laksa

Their curry chicken here is very thick and rich. The chicken's tender too.
It's nice to dip slices of bread with this curry.

Curry Chicken

There are other stuff like Sambal Seafood (prawns, mussels) and other stuff. But I was too full to eat it.

There's also lots of desserts, fruits etc. But here's one that I always like. Cendol. :-)

Cendol

A few of the dishes here is what our youngest sis likes. Bro will be staying in her place in UK and we are wondering if we can legally bring in stuff to recreate what we ate for her. We wonder if 'hae kor' can be brought in.

Venezia Gelateria @ Guthrie House, Bukit Timah

Where's a good place to de-stress? Try a gelato place and have some gelato.
I think it's very therapeutic. I hope you get relax looking this photos too. Looking at photos without eating and just imagining the taste = zero calorie ;-)

Coconut Gelato. It's like eating coconut flesh / drinking coconut juice. Refreshing!

Coconut Gelato

What is this? Mascarpone Cheese flavour.
This is so so good too....

Mascapone Cheese Gelato

Double Chocolate gelato with freshly made waffle. Delightful!

Double Chocolate Gelato on Waffle

Want something more adult? Rum and Raisin that's quite potent with warm waffles. Aaahh....

Rum and Raison Gelato on Waffle

Their tiramisu's not bad too.

Tiramisu

It's midweek, and everyone seems to be overwhelmed with work. Get some ice cream / gelato!

Samy's Curry Restaurant @ Dempsey

Here's another 'farewell' dinner for our brother. We met up with more cousins and relatives to eat, chat and say good bye.

Hmm I just realised that in UK, there's lots and lots of Indian food, and it might be better too! LOL...

Anyway, we went to Samy's because we have not been here for years. The last time we were here, we had to buy coupons as entrance fee or something. That was before the Dempsey area became a hip place for dining.

Samy's Curry Restaurant

This is our table. That's the youngest on our table. Our niece and she was so excited to eat from a banana leave placed on the table. :-)

Ate from Banana Leaves

They were serving a choice of Nasi Biryani or plain white rice.
I had the Biryani . Eating it plain is already so nice. You can see the spices in the rice!

Nasi Beriyani

We also had naan. We had all the 5 different kinds that they served. Garlic Naan, Butter Naan, Cheese Naan, Plain Naan and Kashmiri Naan. I like Kashmiri because it's sweet and fruity.

5 diff types of Naan

This is the Mysore Mutton. They said it's one of the specialties. It sure is spicy!
The mutton lovers amongst us liked it, not for me. I don't like mutton. (because of the strong smell) :-p

Spicy Lamb

The Curry Squid.

Curry Sotong

This is the Masala Chicken. Think it's quite all right.

Butter Chicken

Who can resist tiny bites of fried chicken? This is the Chicken Tikka.

Chicken Tikala

The Curry Fish Head. We were quite shocked was so big. When aunt ordered it, she was told 1 fish head feeds 2-3 persons. So she ordered 2 of it because there was 10 of us. When it came, it was 2 big heads! LOL... Well, we finished it.

Curry Fish Head

It was quite hearty meal. We might have over ordered. A few of the above came in double servings, so we had to 'pack it away' for some dishes. Nearly $200 for the above plus drinks.

The place is quite packed too. Natural ventilation in the old colonial style building / barracks. So its quite a nice atmosphere.

Nasi Padang River Valley @ Zion Road

In about 2 week's time, our youngest brother will be leaving Singapore and going back to work in UK. Suddenly we all feel so sad. Our home will have one less person. It will definitely be quieter. (not that he's very noisy. lol)

Anyway, we are bringing him around to eat the local stuff before he goes back. So we start with Nasi Padang.

Nasi Padang River Valley

We had 6 of us. The following dishes fed us till we want no more. So stuffed with food!

The Sayur Lodeh.

Sayur Lodeh

The Sambal Goreng. Some people call it Tempeh Goreng.

Sambal Goreng

The Kari Ayam.

Curry Chicken

The Sotong Sambal.

Sambal Sotong

The Spicy Terung (Brinjal)

Spicy Brinjal

The Beef Rendang.

Beef Rendang

Begedil

Begedil

The sambal belacan for that kick.

Sambal Belacan

And they always provide some sauce for your rice. This is the Asam Pedas sauce.

Asam Pedas Sauce

The food's generally quite nice. But we thought it tasted better the last time. We wonder if it's only our taste buds or maybe it was our perception. We set our expectations a bit too high. LOL..

Today's beef is not as tender, maybe it's the cut that we got. We had 5 pieces, only two pieces were soft and tender, the rest was tough. We were all quite satisfied with the vegetable dishes. Well, our brother enjoyed it. He finished every single drop of the difference sauces!!

Around $50 for the above, with 6 plates of rice. We added 3 extra plates of rice later. :-)

When his food came, it smell so good.
It looks very delicious too right? This one one side of what he ordered. Curry Chicken and Sambal Terung (Brinjal)

Weekend dinner at Aunt

We had the opportunity to have dinner last weekend at Aunt's again. Here's what we had:

Xiao Bai Cai stir fried with garlic.

Xiao Bai Cai

Deep fried meat rolls. Great with Thai Chilli sauce.

Meat Roll

This is the 'bomber chicken drumlets'. Kids and kids at heart like us enjoy eating this.

You got to tediously scrape the meat to one corner marinate it and deep fry it. Took this photo while it was being drained of the remaining oil in the kitchen.

Bomber Chicken Drumlets

Stir fried asparagus with seafood. Yummy.

Asparagus with seafood

Streaky pork belly (san chen rou) that's been coated with flour and deep fried. Can you guess what dish is this going to end up as?

Swwet and Sour Pork before the sauce

Sweet and Sour Pork with pomegranate.
Streaky pork makes this dish taste nicer. Lean meat makes it less tasty.
Of course you can't eat this all the time ;-)

Sweet and Sour Pork

For soup, we had Bak Kut Teh.
Pork Ribs with quail eggs.

Bak Kut Teh

The kids have juices, the adults had ice wine.

Have a good weekend to all!

Big D's Grill @ Holland Drive

One colleague (pirate) had been asking us to go try Big D's Grill after he read from 'the baker's blog that it's moving to Holland Drive.

Pirate and another few colleagues went there earlier this month, but found that it's not ready for business yet, so this time he's sure it's opened.

It's in the same kopitiam that the famous Holland V XO Bee Hoon. It's also just beside the new Buona Vista Community Club.

Big D's Grill

So, what did we eat?

DP ordered the Beer Battered Snapper (Fish&Chips) $8.90
The chips are nice, fish's not bad too.

Beer Battered Snapper

Pirate had the Beef Goulash.
I had a piece and it's very soft and tender but a tad salty. Pirate said that it would be nice on rice. I think so too.

Goulash

I had the Bang Bang Chicken $7.90
I think this is so so lah.. It's spicy, you get a burning sensation on your lips and tongue. LOL
I prefer pirate's beef.

Bang Bang Chicken

Ms Tea had the Lasagne $12.90
It looks good doesn't it?

Lasagna

The food's not bad, but the coffeeshop during lunch time is too too warm!
It's also very pack. So go a bit early if you can. Also if you can, get a seat that's outside the coffeeshop. It's too warm sitting inside. You might enjoy the food better if you are not burning under the heat ;-)

Sarang Modern Korean Dining @ Science Park I

This was our lunch yesterday. The day before, we saw this place being reviewed in the newspaper. We realised that it's very near our office, so colleagues and I decided to go try it out.

It's at Science Park I, if you know where's Khansama, it's just beside it.

The place is done up very nicely. Dim lights (arrghh...bad for photography), sleek and chic modern designs for the deco.

Sarang - Modern Korean Dining

So, here's the food we had:
They are all set meals (except the shared item) which came with side dishes.

This is the Jeyuk Dolsot Bibimbap $15.
We saw the spicy pork slices and we were salivating. (It was the triple layered pork!)

Jeyuk Dolsot Bibimbap

The set meal viewed from the top. 4 side dishes for each set. (This one shows the sauce for the bibimbap) They all look almost similar, so will show only once here.

Jeyuk Dolsot Bibimbap

This is Sarang Dolsot Bibimbap. $15.
No one ate this. Why? Because no one ordered it! They put it in front of me, but realised that they got my order wrong! So I had to wait all over again for my order. The consolation, I got to take a photo of this dish.

This is one of the meat-less dish. The egg yolk in the middle must of a quail's egg, as it is so small and cute!

Sarang Dolsot Bibimbap

3 colleagues ordered this. Dwaeji Bokeum. $15
This stir fried pork dish with kimchi looks very nice!

Dwaeji Bokeum

Another colleague had the Kimchi Kalguksu $15.
It's knife-shaven noodle with sauteed aged kimchi. (Korean version of dao xiao mian? ;-) )

Kimchi Kalguksu

The following 3 photos are the shared dishes we ordered.

Gunmandu $12 (7 pieces)
It's pan fried dumplings stuffed with vegetables and meat.

Gunmandu

This is how it looks after I took a bite.
Inside there's korean rice vermicelli which gives it a nice texture.

Gunmandu

The other shared dish, Bulgogi Tteokboki $15
It's korean rice cakes that's really chewy and spicy with Beef Bulgogi on top.
Lovely lovely dish if you love rice cakes.

Bulgogi Tteokboki

My order finally arrived.
It's Sarang Gimbap $15.
It's steamed rice and beef bulgogi rolled in dried seaweed. In other words, sushi roll.
It's sushi roll that has rice without vinegar. It's quite nice. (and very filling too)

Sarang Gimbap

Here's the side dishes that came with the set lunch.

The nicely arranged kimchi. (It would be nice if they gave more)

Kimchi

Soy marinated lotus root slices. Very nice!

Sliced Lotus Marinated with Soy

Egg omelette that's soft in the inside. Nice :-)

Omelette

The korean miso soup. It has cut fresh chilli rings, cucumber, etc.
It's a bit different from the normal Japanese miso soup. We all liked it as it taste rather good.

Korean Miso Soup

The set meals ended with a fruit.
A very nicely cut orange. Half an orange, with skin removed and cut into 4 pieces which makes it so easy to eat!

Dessert: Orange so nicely cut up

One thing we noticed that all the ceramic bowls and plates were heated up. The food stays warm longer and the food does not get temperate shock after being transfered to the serving dishes.

We ordered drinks too. The drinks photos came out real bad because of the dim lights. (Thus they are not posted here) One colleague had Sikhye - Home made sweet Korean rice beverage, and the rest of us had SuJeongGwa - a traditional cold persimmon beverage. The SujeongGwa really really sweet!

The total bill plus taxes etc is $189.50.
Seven of us, so each one paid $27 for quite a delightful Korean meal.

Valentine's Day BBQ

Our church Young Adults had a BBQ on Valentine's Day. Our creative friends even made a promotional video for the event. I think it's very well done, and I would like to share it with you all.

It's called the Baba Barbeque. Ya, one of our friend acted as 'Chen Xi'. LOL...
Here's some photos of the BBQ.

The BBQ ingredients.

Lots of feta cheese for feta cheese fans!

Feta

Trays of Fried Bee Hoon, Fried Rice.....

Fried Bee Hoon

Maybe the only thing Peranakan, these kueh kuehs. LOL.

Nyonya Kueh

Salad...

Salad

Hummus dip with paprika. It goes well with the pita bread we had.
( I actually dip it with satay, and I think it's not too bad)

Humus with paprika

The Satay... Chicken and Lamb.

Chicken and Lamb Satay

It was nice to have people BBQ-ing and the rest of us eating. LOL..
These beef pieces are really good. Yummy...

The BBQ...

These are the spicy devil wings. Too too spicy!

Devil's Wings

Yes, we are not suppose to BBQ with fire like this, but once a while, the fire flares up, and you see all the girls go towards it with sticks of marshmallows!

Perfect fire for marshmallows ya.

Bengawan Solo @ West Mall

You can find Bengawan Solo almost everywhere in Singapore.

So, what's so special about this branch of Bengawan Solo?
It has a sitting area where you can try the kueh-kueh muih-muih that's on sale.

I found out a few days ago from my aunt, that many people come here to have their Cendol.

Bengawan Solo @ West Mall

So I came here with my Uncle and Aunty to have cendol after doing some grocery shopping. (Bengawan Solo in West Mall is just in front of Shop N Save)

Dessert photos are difficult to take. Things are all hidden under the ice shavings.

What you can see here is that the shaved ice's topped with gula melaka that looks so rich and sweet. To add a hint of old times, they are using those olden style metal spoons too!

The Cendol's $2.50.

Cendol

Depending on your style of eating. Some people like to mix the whole bowl up immediately. Others like to slowly 'discover' the treasure inside. They nibble bits of ice shavings slowly.

We like slowly digging the ice and revealing the cendol slowly. Here you see some cendol appearing....

Cendol

There's also a new dessert that's on promotion. Ice Avocado. $2.80 (on promo price)
The ice shaving's covered with chocolate sauce and bandung.

Ice Avocado

The hidden treasures below the ice shavings are:
- chunks of avocado
- pieces of nangka
- plus other stuff that I forgot. LOL..

Ice Avocado

Not sure if other Bengawan Solo stalls have Cendol.
But this branch at West Mall has. Anyone knows other branches that have it?

V Day Breakfast and Supper

V Day. While everyone sleeps in, we don't have the luxury. Momo and I (and 30 over other friends), we have a weekly early morning Bible Study training on Saturday mornings.

So, we can only have a short 20 min breakfast. This is what we had:

Nishiki Rice topped with Salmon Mix and Furikake.
Topped with some spring onions and Japanese cucumber.

Jap Rice with Salmon Mix sprinkled with Furikake and spring onions.

This is cold tofu also sprinkled with Furikake.
Haha. you can see that we love Furikake. It's so tasty and addictive. (yes, MSG. LOL..)

Cold Tofu with Furikake

There was to be other things to be cooked, but can't do so many things and we are running late, so the rest of the stuff we ate it for tea. LOL..

This is prime ribs and seaweed soup that's boiled for 7 hours.

Mum cooked this for us all the time when we were young. It was only when Korean dramas became a rage that we realise that Koreans drink this too. Same same, only difference is that we drink it all the time, but Koreans (on TV dramas) seem to only have it for birthdays.

Boiled overnight you asked? Sort of. It was cooking in its own heat for 7 hours in a thermal pot. ;-)

Prime Rib and Seaweed Soup

After the evening activites with friends (BBQ) were over, we continued to have our supper/dessert at home.

I made breakfast, so Momo brought supper. A dark chocolate cake from Bakerzin.

Heart Shape Cake from Bakerzin

We can't possibly eat the whole cake right? Sis and Bro will be sharing calories with us.
Now.... how to cut it equally in 4 pieces and yet preserve the heart shape?

Slice it sideways! This way, every slice of cake still has the heart shape.

How to not break the heart. LOL

One thing about slicing the cake this way, the top piece is super chocolatey and sweet.

The top layer is super sweet!

Happy V Day to all...

Sing Ho Hainan Chicken Rice

Two colleagues and I were walking around Middle Road and was wondering what to eat. Then we saw this 3 chicken rice shops side by side and wondered if we should try it.

Then we realise there's actually only 2 shops. The two shops sandwiching the middle shop has the same name. The name of the shop is Sing Ho. There's a newer Sing Ho and an older Sing Ho. We decided to go to the older, more dilapidated looking shop. We realised many people did the same thing too.

Sing Ho Hainan Chicken Rice at Middle Road

OK, we did not know that this is a famous chicken rice shop till we went back to office and did an online search. So we sat down and ate without much expectation. We saw these newspaper cutting that seems to be from last decade maybe?

Lots of awards displayed.

The rice came and it was quite tempting.

One thing we noticed though. While we were walking around, we realise that this block of building has a Jewish name and a Star of David on it. Then when this plate of rice came, we saw on the plate, words like hyssop, olive, etc, we were like, ey... very Jewish indeed. Hyssop's what the Jewish used to paint blood on their door post during Passover in the Old Testament.

The chicken rice

We were hungry people. We decided to order half Obama and half McCain.
So that's 1 chicken for the 3 of us.
The Roast Chicken side of the plate...

Roast Chicken side of the plate

And the White Chicken side of the plate of chicken.
We realised that the meat has been smashed though. Chinese penyet we though. But it tasted really tender and good though.

White Chicken side of the plate

We ordered a bowl of chap chye soup as well. Soup's so so lah. The chicken with their chilli and ginger sauce is nicer.

Mix Veg Soup

It's quite nice. No wonder there's so many people around eating this chicken rice.
$32.10 for the above plus 3 drinks. (2 barley and 1 lime).

Sushi Tei @ China Square Central

Last Saturday, one of our friends that's been called "Goat" asked if wanted to have dinner at Sushi Tei. Since we had people living in both the East and the West, Goat organised it to be at a more central place.

There are people with really "rubber timing". So those who arrived earlier was famished and decided to order a few things to ease our hunger first.

Some had handrolls first. This is the crab and avocado handroll.

Crab and Avocado Handroll

Others had platters of sushi first. This is one of the favourites. Unagi yum yum.

Unagi Sushi

When the rest started coming in, these was what we ate while we chat.
All I remember from the chats are old SBC/TCS era dramas and actors and famous phrases from those shows. We realise that actors of those era are now back acting. Times are bad that they are back? hehe.. LOL...

(SBC - Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, TCS - Television Corporation of Singapore. SBC and TCS were former names of what is now called Mediacorp)

This is Sashimi Salad.

Sashimi Salad

This is very delicious. Asari Clams. Clams in Japanese wine.

Asari clams

Seem to always enjoy their spicy hot pots here.
So here's the Spicy Seafood Hotpot.

Spicy Seafood Hotpot

After they pour the soup, you wait for it to boil.....

While waiting, you talk about other things.
If you are in Singapore and watch Channel 8 dramas, do you find yourself confused? The same actors are acting in both the 7 pm and 9 pm dramas.

Some of us joked that they have retrenched many of their artistes that's why they have a shortage. They are using the same actors in their dramas. In the previous 'peranakan' show, they even had the same actors acting two characters in the show. LOL....

Spicy Seafood Hotpot

Anything with unagi is popular with us.
This is the Unagi wrapped in Egg.

Eel with Eggs

Those who needed more carbo ordered things like Chirashi to fill their tummies.

Chirashi

Others who did not want to much rice, ate from this platter.

Assortment of Sushi

And to those who had tempura cravings, they are this. LOL

Ebi Tempura

We are wondering what Goat will organise next.
After sushi, we went to 'nuah' at TCC (The Gallery) nearby.

Last week, we had a visit from an ex-colleague who is now working with this famous search engine and webmail company based in Sunnyvale, California. It's good to see her again and we met up for lunch.

We went to a nearby mall to have lunch. We looked around the mall and decided it was either Emperor Q or Dian Xiao Er. We thought we should try Emperor Q as they said they have a 25% opening special. LOL...

Emperor Q @ West Coast Plaza

Some of the things we ordered to share:
Chicken Wings.

Fried Chicken Wings

Asam Chicken.
This dish looks simple but the taste's really not bad. If you like Asam based dishes, you might like it. It's sour enough :-)

Asam Chicken

These are the individual dishes that we ordered:
One colleague had the Cod Fish Porridge. The egg on top makes it looks good eh?

Eel Porridge

The cod fish noodles. The noodles comes with a halve egg that has those soft yokes (tamago) Yummm.

Cod Fish Noodles

Noodles House Ken @ Orchard Plaza

Last Friday night, a few food blogger friends were suppose to have dinner, but it was canceled at the last minute because the organiser could not make it.

Anyway, we thought since we already made time for it, why not meet up anyway. So I met up with Mr Hairyberry. The rest could not make it after they made alternate plans and it was raining too.

We went to Noodle House Ken, that one food blogger friend (that could not make it) said is really nice. I could not find it, so I called my bro who's already there with hairyberry.

They have two tiny shoplots. One's the annex, and that's where we sat.

Noodle House Ken @ Orchard Plaza

If you do an online search, most people recommend the Fried Gyoza $5. So we ordered it. It's quite light and very homely flavour to it. Mr Hairyberry said this might be the night's nicest food.

Gyoza

This is the Char Siew. $5
So so lah. I like the side parts where it was more burnt :-)

Crystal Jade Kitchen @ Holland Village

Last Thursday, we celebrated one colleague's birthday by going out for a nice lunch. As the birthday boy is rather busy, we went to somewhere nearby which is Holland Village, so that we can come back quickly.

As it was still within the 15 days of CNY, regular dishes in the menu's not offered. Oh man... you should see the menu here. They actually staple up the pages of their menu! LOL So a thick menu now only has 4 or 5 pages to flip.

Times are not so rosy and so we did not really want to order "normal dishes with nicer sounding names" just for the sake of the names and pay a premium for it. So we picked dishes from the remaining pages of the menu.

We saw this item, Crispy Curry Duck. $24.
We were thinking of a bowl of curry with duck in it. What came surprised us. :-) It's Crispy Duck on a plate....

Crispy Curry Duck

And two bowls of curry sauce for you to pour over the duck yourself. The curry smells very good. The duck's not too bad too. We just had to laugh ;-)

Curry Sauce fo the Crispy Curry Duck

Someone wanted this Poach Chinese Spinach with 2 kinds of eggs. $22.20
This is the 1.5 size portion. We always like this.

Poach Chinese Spinach with 2 kinds of eggs

Since most things on the menu's stapled up, we ordered the remaining stuff. Here's the deep fried prawn with salad sauce. $18

Deep Fried Prawn salad

And also steamed Cod Fish with Cut Chilli. $19.50
Cod cooked this way is always quite delicious ya?

Steamed Cod Fish with chilli

We also ordered our regular servings of dim sum like Har Kau, Siew Mai, Chee Cheong Fun etc...

Happy Birthday Mr Z.
Congratulations too on the birth of your 2nd son today!

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao @ Holland Village

This was our church Care Group's CNY Dinner. Instead of having studies today, we ate. :-)
It has been some time since most of us went to La Mian XLB, so we thought we will give it a visit. (Hmm.. our next visit might not be so soon after this. LOL...)

Compared to yesterday's sky high Yu Sheng, this is more 'down to earth'.

Yu Sheng

One thing interesting was the phrases that they recited though. It was a bit different.

Yu Sheng

The long beans with mince pork and olives.
We seem to always enjoy this :-)

Long Beans with minced pork and olives

This is spicy chicken. We were all thinking, is chicken the main ingredient or is it chilli?
Seems to have more of the latter. Portion's very small too.

Chicken with Dried Chilli

This is stir fried beef. The portion's a little tiny, maybe if they could increase the portion too?

Stir Fried Beef

The hotpot mix soup.
This is something I think most of us enjoyed more than the rest above.

Hot Pot Soup

Spicy vinegared dumplings.

Spicy Vinegared Dumplings

Haha.. We thought the above dishes would be enough to fill out tummies, but it turned not really. So we ordered some desserts to try.

The red bean pancakes.

Fried Pancake

And the deep fried dumplings.
(Forgot what is this, will update it when I remember).

CJXLB9

Think we should stick to ordering the same things we always order here instead of trying to be adventurous. (You don't get the satisfaction. You know what we mean right? ie we din really like the things above.)

Also, there are stuff like the set menus that we wanted to try that's not available. (Why give you the menu and then say sorry you can't order from it.) You are forced to have their CNY specials that's a tad (or maybe a few more tads) pricier than the normal sets.

Tung Luk Seafood @ Upper Jurong Road

This was dinner that I had with Momo and her parents. It was at Tung Lok Seafood at Upper Jurong Road.

Tung Lok Seafood

Yet another Yu Sheng on this blog. LOL. Quite delicious and has a fanciful name too!
Bountiful Harvest Salmon Yu Sheng.

Yu Sheng

"Tan Jia" Style Fish Maw Bisque.
What is Tan Jia? I have no idea ;-)

Fish Maw Soup

But it's delicious and has lots of ingredients.

Fish Maw Soup

Steamed Sea Perch with Minced Garlic and Preserved Vegetables.
If you are a fish lover, you should try this perch. So soft and it taste so good.

Steamed Dory

This is Pan Fried Pork Ribs with Lemongrass.
It is so fragrant and the pork ribs are huge.

Pork Rib

The vegetable dish: Fried Kailan with garlic.

Kai Lan with garlic

The bisque, perch and pork ribs are individual servings, ie, each of us got a bowl/plate of it.
Yummy!

Dinner at Aunt's

This is another of the CNY dinner at Uncle's place where Aunt cooked for us again. With their daughter, it's 7 of us cousins and one grand nephew enjoying ourselves eating and chatting.

We are Hokkiens, and we were thinking, what is the youngest boy suppose to call the oldest in the house in Hokkien? The youngest that night calls the two oldest "Gor Chek Gong" and "Gor Chim Mah". Sounds so old right?

Anyway, we "lou yu sheng" again. It's one of those DIY packs from the supermarket.
Aunt can't get any sashimi grade salmon, so she used abalone instead.

Abalone for Yu Sheng

The Yu Sheng arrangement looks good? Maybe it's because Yours Truly arranged it. ;-p

It's really easy to prepare this at home like we did.
You buy a pack of the Yu Sheng package from the supermarket. Then buy the pre shredded veggies. (by the way, pre-shredded veggies cost $2, it's so much convenient to buy these than to hurt your hands shredding them. We learnt our lessons from previous tries)

We added a pack of jelly fish and also half a peeled pomelo.

Yu Sheng

This is the finish product just before tossing.
Uncle was the one saying the 'blessing' phrases and pouring the stuff over.

Yu Sheng

Other stuff that we ate:
Aunt's version of Babi Ponteh. We all love this. ;-)

Babi Ponteh

This is Satay Beef. Aunt's has a friend who passed her some satay sauce made by her factory. She marinated the beef with 'kunyit' (turmeric) and the usual spices and then fry with the satay sauce. It turns out very nice.

Satay Beef

This is the Sambal prawns and mini sotong.

Every decent kitchen should have a bottle of good home made sambal. Cooking dishes like this would be so easy. This is super 'pedas' and tasty.

Sambal Sotong

We still had the 'bak kerng' rolls that our cousin made. ;-)
This time cut into small pieces and deep fried.

Fried Bak Kerng

I was too busy eating and chatting, I think I forgot to take photos of the veggies!
(Oh, Yu Sheng's a salad, so that counts right?)

Here's wishing you all 心想事成 xin xiang shi cheng. (Desires of your heart be granted)

Quoting from Psalm 37:4
"Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

CNY Meet up with friends @ The East (Pt II)

From yesterday's post....

Here's the CNY goodies / Japanese goodies to try.
They heated up the love letters in the oven just before serving, so it was very nice and warm.

CNY Tid Bits

On the Japanese theme, they had Japanese Milk Tea. This is one very nice tea.

Kirin Milk Tea - very nice!

Due to some conviction of this group of people, we are not suppose to have alcohol. Momo and I bought this. One of the drinks with only 6% ethanol. :-)

Melon Wine, only 6% :-)

Another friend brought green tea ice cream from Venezia.

Green Tea Ice Cream - Venezia

Another friend made Konnyaku.

Jellies!

The host also served this very light and delicious Camembert Cheesecake. Very nice.
Plus other desserts which my camera did not capture nicely.

Camembert Cheese Cake

Hope you all get idea on how to organize your own party too!

CNY Meet up with friends @ The East

On Sunday, P & E invited a whole group of us to their house for a CNY meet up.
It has been a long time since we met up. We have also not met many others that was going. It was so nice to catch up with each other.

What did we eat? The host and hostess theme was Japanese for the day. So here's what we had.

The Yu Sheng. (no not Japanese, but the sashimi on top does it count? lol )
Don't you all love their table cloth??

Tossing Yu Sheng

GG, my ex-DL (Discussion leader) in BSF brought this. Sashimi Salad.

Sashimi Salad

E made this huge chawanmushi. Instead of small little cups, she used the Corning ware soup bowl to make it. Quite delicious!

Big bowl of Chawanmushi

We need our greens, and here it is. Plus some purple too. hehe...

Mixed Salad

This is Wasabi Top Shell. It taste quite good, especially with nice warm rice.

Wasabi Top Shell

This is Wasabi Squid. It gives me an idea of what to make next time when I invite people over! :-)

Wasabi Squid

This is salmon that E baked in the oven and then lightly mashed it. E wanted it more coarse / bigger chunks, but her husband took over and make it finer. Hmm it taste good, so we are not particular about the size.

Baked Salmon then lightly mashed.

The stuff to put on top of the rice. Furikake and fish eggs.

Assortment of furikake

The assembled product. I like this very much. I think I ate 3 of these! hehe...
The salty furikake topping is very addictive!

Rice with salmon and furikake

The roast beef with chopped herbs on top. That's the Japanese mint leaves (Shiso) chopped.

Roast Beef with Jap Greens

This is not it, more of it tomorrow.

Thanks P & E for inviting us. :-)

CNY Lunch @ NUS Kent Ridge Guild House

We usually have our company's annual CNY lunch on "ren ri" (Day of Man) which is the 7th day of the Lunar New Year. But this year's 7th day falls on a Sunday so we had our lunch on the 8th day instead.

Here we are, colleagues and I tossing the Yu Sheng! Oh, we just love playing with food! LOL...
For those who don't know, Yu Sheng is a dish that's invented in Singapore.

The 6th course: Braised Shell Abalone and Bailing Mushroom with Seasonal Vegetables.
We found the abalone tough. The mushroom and veg taste so much better.

The 7th course: Braised E-fu noodles with Dried Scallop.
(Hmm did not taste any scallop at all. )
