Noodles Stall @ Arts Canteen, NUS

It has been months since my colleagues and I ate at the Arts Canteen. We are usually too lazy to travel far away. (I can hear u all say, ya right.... haha)

Walking around, one colleague and I decided to have Bak Chor Mee. (I had Kuey Teow, so it should be Bak Chor Kuey Teow )

Colleague said that this might be the healthiest noodles ever. There's so little oil, no lardy crispy stuff in it too. It's filled with veggies too. If your eyes are sharp, you might see something in it. 'Tong Cai', just beside the fish ball. (the salty pickle veg is unhealthy right?)

Bak Chor Mee

One of the fun thing is to mix everything up.
$2 only and it has minced pork, mushrooms, 2 fish balls, 2 pork balls, sliced fish cakes, sliced lettuce and bean sprouts with Kuey Teow.

Bak Chor Mee

The queue's usually quite long. But it was ok when we came. phew!

Aji-Tei @ Plaza Singapura

On Saturday, we had dinner at Aji-Tei at Plaza Singapura because sis had to go for a combined choir practice at a church nearby.

We are not sure why we ended up eating here, but we did! We are rushing for time. ;-)

Aji-Tei

I had the Teriyaki Set.

Teriyaki Chicken set

Not bad lah.

Teriyaji Chicken

The tofu that comes with the set meals.

Cold Tofu

Sis had the Japanese Chicken Curry with Omurice.

Chicken Curry with Omurice

Aunt had the set meal too. The tonkatsu set.

Tonkatsu

Our cousin surprised us by ordering the paper hotpot. She never liked it. Kids are growing and their taste seem to change all the time.

Sukiyaki Set

The soup is really really sweet. A bit too sweet for me. But it's tasty.

Sukiyaki - the Paper Pot

The beef. I think she likes to 'play with food' that's why she ordered it.

Dallas Restaurant & Bar @ Boat Quay

While Momo and I were in Disneyland, we kinda miss the food back here. When I saw an email from Camemberu saying 'come lah... go to LadyIronChef's 2nd birthday party', Momo and I said yes! So I sms LadyIronChef to book two spaces. We were looking forward to eating back in Singapore.

We landed at Changi 1:40 AM, went home to take a short nap, and woke up 8:00 AM to go for Bible Study Fellowship. Right after that, we came to Dallas for LIC's party at 12 noon.

Sitting at our table was Camemberu, AromaCookery, Jaime La Nourriture and her friend Fay, Arlyna and Mike. I must thank Fay, Arlyna and Mike for being so patient with the rest of us who were taking photos. I hope we did not get on their nerves. We had great company on our table!

Dallas Restaurant & Bar @ Boat Quay

What did we eat? It was a tasting menu that's $23++.

The Salt and Pepper Calamari was first. Very mild tasting and light. But it was not overcooked. I would have liked it a tad saltier :-)
Not sure if it's because my taste buds have been tainted by food in US for 10 days. LOL...

Salt and Pepper Calamari

Next was Chicken and Cheese Quesadillas.

Chicken and Cheese Quesadillas

The Shredded Pork Tacos was next.

Shredded Pork Tacos

Haha, you could have detected that I am not a great fan of the Tacos and Quesadillas. But I like Baby Back Ribs!

The ribs were done in 3 ways: Fiery, Alabama and Smoked Hickory BBQ.
We were all guessing which is which because even the servers were confused. haha...

Baby Back Pork Ribs - Served 3 ways: Fiery, Alabama and Smoked Hickory BBQ

But they were all quite delicious. The meat comes off easily from the bones. The fiery version left us wanting more! I could do with some ribs now!

(We ate at Tony Roma's at Anaheim, CA just few days ago and we were quite disappointed with Tony's there, the one in Singapore seems better.)

Baby Back Pork Ribs - Served 3 ways: Fiery, Alabama and Smoked Hickory BBQ

You can tell that the owner Australian with his so heavy accented Australian English. (He sounds like my classmates! haha) Aussies love Barramundi!

This is Tempura Barramundi with Thai Herbs and Naan Jim. (I have no idea what Naan Jim is, anyone knows?)

This simple looking dish is very tasty! The sauce that goes with it is also nice with all the salad greens on the side.

Tempura Barramundi with Thai Herbs & Naan Jim

Next was Dallas Wings.
Got to say sorry, don't try this until they improve on it. In fact when I took a peep around, I could see a few tables with leftover of this.

Dallas Wings with Ranch Dipping Sauce

Next was Corn and Crab Fritters.

Corn and Crab Fritters with Chilli Glaze

Next was the Beef Fajitas. When it came out, this dish looks so delicious. How should I describe it? It is like Mexican rendang with japalenos! We were told this was 120 day old grain fed beef. The accompanying tortillas was nice and warm.

Beef Fajitas with Guacamole & Sour Cream

The last dish was Breaded Mushrooms. Looks like something they served earlier? Similar looking but totally different inside.

Breaded Mushrooms with Cheese and Garlic Mayo

The cheese is stuffed on the mushroom inside. It's very juicy so be careful when you bite into it! You don't want to dirty your shirt.

Breaded Mushrooms with Cheese and Garlic Mayo

All of us were so so full when the party ended. Thanks LIC and Happy 2nd birthday!

Now.... Wondering how to pronounce words like Fajitas, Tortilla etc? Hop over to Camemberu's. Her daughter will teach you, hop over if you're a Canon fan too. Aroma Cookery has also posted up her post, hope over if you're a Sony Alpha fan. LadyIronChef's a Nikon fan, and visit his site if you're a Nikon fan and also to wish him a Happy Birthday. Yoshimaru Ramen Bar @ Holland Village (Part II)

Today's post is also part of yesterday's meal. You know we can be quite gluttony at times, so we ordered some things to share.

Yoshimaru Ramen Bar

This is the Char Siu platter.
So so lah. We ate this with our noodles.

Char Siu Platter

After all the noodles, 'old cat' was seen staring at the photo of the burgers on the wall. So we thought we shall just order it and we all eat it. If not, we will have no end to the nagging. LOL

The special was the if you order all three burgers, it was cheaper. Around $8 I think.

The set of 3 burgers...

The Hakata Mini Teriyaki Burger.

Hakata Mini Teriyaki Burger
Hakata Mini Spicy Burger. I think this is actually quite nice.

Hakata Mini Spicy Burger

This is the Hakata Mini Mentaiko Mayo Burger.

The burgers are quite ok The only problem is that they are really really small!

The total price for yesterday and today's meal with drinks came up to $ 83.07 after the 25% discount.

1 April Update: It seems that the 25% offer was gone since last week. Sis went few days ago, and colleague last weekend. Sis commented that her noodles that her colleagues and her ate was a bit too soggy. Hmm.. but the one my colleague ate was still ok. End of update.

Yoshimaru Ramen Bar @ Holland Village

Colleagues and I ate this nearly two weeks ago, ie 17 March 09. No time to post it up because the next day I was off to Los Angeles.

If you are wondering which shop made way for this new ramen bar, Yi Bao who used to occupy two shoplots is now only occupying one lot now. The remaining is now Yoshimaru Ramen Bar.

Yoshimaru Ramen Bar

There was 5 of us having lunch. 2 of us had the Traditional Hakata Ramen. $11

Traditional Hakata Ramen

The other 3 colleagues can't decide what they wanted to add in decided to have the 'everything in the bowl', Moridakusan Ramen. (I think it was $14 plus)

Moridakusan Ramen (All-in)

How was it? 2 of us who like pork bone ramen soup found it quite good. The noodles were done just nice. The soup's thick but not overly thick.

1 other had no opinion, but 2 other think it's way too salty. They also said the pork's a bit strong in smell, and wonder if it's the Australian porky that smells so strong. Difficult to please right?

But we all agreed that if you like garlic, you should sprinkle this garlic sprinkle over it. It taste even better!

Condiments

They were having a trial opening special of 25% off. Not sure if the 25% is still on. The prices mentioned above are before the 25% discount.

Max Brenner @ Esplanade

After paying for dinner at Prego (from yesterday's post), they gave us 4 chocolate balls and we got tempted by what they gave us.

To satisfy the cravings, we thought we will proceed to a chocolate place. We thought of Max Brenner. Here's what we had:

Chocolate Walnut Brownie.
It was all right on one side, nice, moist and warm. The other side, it was kinda dry. Hmmm was it microwaved? Hmmm...

Chocolate Walnut Brownie

The chocolate souffle with vanilla ice cream.

Chocolate Souffle with Vanilla Ice cream

It was OK. Psst, a nicer one will be at Bakerzin. (really!)

Chocolate Souffle with the soft chocolate filling

Now, people come to Max Brenner because they want to drink this. This is the dark chocolate Suckao. This is the pouring of the warm milk into the 'suckao container'.

Next you pick up the chocolate chips and put it into the milk.

Then you 'suck' it using the steel straw provided. Feel the warm chocolate flow into your throat.

This is the HugMug. I think this was the Belgium Chocolate drink.

Prego @ Fairmont Singapore

Earlier this month, I met up with a "writer friend" from KL whose blog is called "LifeForBeginners". We have been reading each other's blog and it's the first time we met up. Kenny came with his partner CK, Momo came along too.

It was so interesting meeting with Kenny and CK. As Kenny said it was like old friends who have not met for a long time. LOL...

Dinner was at Prego at Fairmont Singapore. Here's what we had:

The soft warm roll that was served to us. (It's given to all tables)
It looks so beautiful doesn't it?

Warm Roll

You can have it with the salsa or have it with olive oil + balsamic vinegar.

Salsa

For starters, we shared a Cesare. $19 (Caesar Salad).

Cesare

I was playing around with my camera, so the photos are all in different shades of brightness. So pardon me...

This is Maiele. $34. On the description, there was something like Pork Belly, but looking at this, it must be the leanest meat I have seen. LOL....

Maiale

CK had Spaghetti Vongole. $26

Spaghetti Vongole

Kenny had the Nodino Vitella. $45 Roast Veal.

Nodino Vitella

Momo had Anatra Salsa. $36 Roast Duck Salsa.

Anatra Salsa

After paying for our meal, we got each a chocolate ball. Yummy!

Paid using the American Express card that comes with Feed with Raffles card. So with 4 persons we got 25% off.

Dinner @ SQ12 (SIN-NRT-LAX) Economy

This is Part II of the flight. The flight from NRT-LAX. There's also a choice of 2 selections. Japanese or International.

Momo had the International Selection which had the chicken.

SIN-NRT-LAX SQ12 (NRT-LAX Portion)

The Appetizer which is a seafood salad.

Appetizer

The warm bun. Momo's bun was soft, but the one I got was rock hard! I think they heated mine way too long....

Warm Roll

The chicken selection with mash potato.

Chicken & Whip Potato

For me, I had the Japanese selection again.

Japanese Selection on SIN-NRT-LAX SQ12 (NRT-LAX Portion)

The starter / appetizer was a single prawn salad. LOL.

Appetizer

I took the Japanese selection because I wanted the cold noodles again. I can't read Japanese, but I think for this leg, the sauce is from Japan.

Soba Sauce

The pickles that was kinda tasty. If only they had more...

Japanese Pickles

The cold soba. Lovely and cold. You don't get it this cold on ground. (even with ice below it in restaurants, which is why it is so nice on the plane?)

Cold Soba

The hot meal was beef for the Japanese selection. It was Japanese Meatloaf. I did not really like it though.

Meat Loaf

The crackers.

Crackers

The high light of this leg was the Fauchon ice cream they served.

Fauchon Ice cream

Fauchon Ice cream

It's so creamy and you can see they use real vanilla pods. It's so fragrant too...

Fauchon Ice cream - Vanilla!

OK. I promise the next post will not be airline food anymore. :-)

Japanese Selection @ SQ12 (SIN-NRT-LAX) Economy

I was wondering if I should post this. Not technically eaten in Singapore. (This diary/blog only post the food eaten in Singapore) But this time it's on a Singapore Airline flight. OK lah....

This is the leg between SIN and NRT on Economy class on SQ12. There's two selection, the International Selection and Japanese Selection. This is the Japanese Selection.

SIN-NRT-LAX SQ12 (SIN-NRT Portion)

Zensai.

It was kinda tasty, slightly fishy. But it's something that can be eaten cold, so it does not need to be heated up and become dry as other airplane food.

Zensai

Japanese Cold Noodles.

Another cold dish, so it's not 'treated with heat' on board the plane. In fact, the noodles are quite delicious. The only complaint was there's too little wasabi. You can ask for more wasabi on board right?

Japanese Cold Noodles

The Soba Noodle Sauce that goes with the noodle above.
The SIN-NRT leg used Australian Soba noodle sauce.

Soba Noodle Sauce

Wakadori Sansho Yaki
Grilled chicken with sansho peppers, selected vegetables and steamed rice. See heated up food changes colour and the rice is dry. The grilled chicken was not dry though. Only the rice ;-)

Wakadori Sansho Yaki

Rice Crackers.

Rice Crackers

Ice Cream
The SIN-NRT leg served Wall's. The NRT-LAX leg served Fauchon ice cream :-)

Ice Cream was Magnum

Roll and Butter.

Roll and Butter

It was quite an all right meal. Airplane food is not always so bad ya.

Toast Box @ Terminal 3 Changi Airport

Momo and I are right now in Los Angeles, California. I am attending an Academic Conference while Momo is here for an outlet shopping trip.

Times are bad, so she's not buying overpriced clothes in Singapore. Do you know that Ralph Lauren tops at Outlet Stores price range is about the same price range as the Giordano Ladies in Singapore?

Wait, you might say what about the air tickets? Mine's paid by the company because it's a conference I am attending. (it's work ok. I had to submit a list of talks related to work and it's arranged 8 to 5!) Momo previously had to travel quite a bit, so she has enough frequent flyer points to fly this trip for free. (Krisflyer's having discounted points to encourage people to fly by the way)

This was Wedneday morning at Terminal 3. Toast Box at the Departure floor.

Toast Box at Changi Airport Terminal 3 Departure

It seems that this might be the more popular kiosk around. The food's nice and the pricing is 'correct' too. The Teh Si here cost $1.50, while the coffee chain that originates from the country we are heading to, cost $3-$4.

Glass Display

Momo had a Boluo Yao ($1.40) for breakfast. She said it taste rather nice.

Boluo Yao

I had this banana cake ($1.50). It was nice too.
But I think the one my mum makes is nicer. :-)

Banana Cake

Teh Si ($1.50) that Momo had. She's kind of a tea / coffee addict. She and her colleague buy this almost every day and this tea lady in this kiosk makes really good tea. The other better one is at Suntec City she says.

Teh Si

I had my usual. Ice Milo. ($1.80).
This version is 'gao' enough and not overly sweet. I like it.

The other branch that I used to buy it but stopped is the one at Plaza Singapura. The Ice Milo there has gone way too diluted. (Anyone out there agrees with me?)

Ice Milo

Glad this kiosk in the airport does things right. By the way, (we already threw away the receipt), is GST charged for restaurants operating inside here?

I had lunch with a group of ladies at Ichiban Boshi. My lunch photos (ie what I ate) were all so blur that I was quite reluctant to post this whole set. But I just changed my mind.

Momo had this for lunch. The Chirasi Don set.

Chirasi Don

The set came with Chawanmushi....

Chawanmushi

... and a Cold tofu side dish.....

Cold Tofu

... and this nice little bowl of pickles.... (that we don't really know what it is, it's nice though, i shall call it small unknown)

Some Appetizer, contents unknown

Ms Dino had a Prawn and Squid on hot plate. It sure smell good.

Prawn

Dino's set came with Tempura Ibi too. (plus the Chawanmushi and the small unknown)

Tempura Ibi

Ms Internal Security had the Sizzling Beef. 3 diff sauces, beef and vegetables. DIY cooking on the hot plate. No side dishes, we all shared ours with her.

Sizzling Beef

Ms Dividends Crispy Fried Chicken with Creamy Sauce. Sauce name unknown too. Forgot to jot down what it was. ;-)

Fried Chicken with Creamy Sauce

Ms Fund Manager had the Unagi with Rice and Cold Soba set. (Came with the Chawanmushi and little unknown too).

Soup Restaurant @ Changi Airport Terminal 2

Our brother has been away for around two weeks now. He has gone back to London to work again after working here in Singapore for slightly over 1 year. Everyday we look at his empty bedroom and we think of him.

This was the farewell dinner we had with him. Eating the things that he might miss. I wonder if he has already miss the food. Maybe not... Most probably only his family. LOL...

The dinner was at Soup Restaurant at Terminal 2.

Soup Restaurant

We had the large Samsui Ginger Chicken. $26.80
Large because our little cousin loves this chicken and also the rest of us. :-)

Samsui Chicken

The medium "Ah Por Fan Su Leaves" $12, sweet potato leaves. Now I think bro won't be able to get this in London right?

"Fan Su Ye"

The boiled soup of the day. It was pork rib soup. $14.80 We have always liked their soup here.
I put the rib there to remind me it was pork rib soup. :-) They usually serve the soup only in the bowl.

Soup of the day

This is the large Hometown Tofu. $17 You know steam fish taste? The sauce over the tofu taste exactly like it.

Fried Tofu

The Hometown Fried Fish Belly dish that's quite nice. $19

Hometown Fries Fish Belly

This is mushroom with broccoli and beancurd skin. $17.50 Nice combi.

Mushroom with Broccoli and Beancurd Skin

The medium Black Pepper Venison. $17.50

Black Pepper Venison

Beggar's Rib. $17.50 We remember this dish to be nicer.
(I wonder if they did not marinate this dish long enough this time.)

The first time I saw this many years ago, I thought it was the Arrival / Departure board at the airport. Looking at it carefully, it's a menu.

This place was Han's. Now it's Hanis. I found out that Hanis is the halal subsidiary of Han's.

Hanis Cafe and Bakery

Sis, Momo and I ate here few weeks ago because we were at the Drama Centre to catch a show - Sleepless Town. (by the way the season's over, so if you miss it, errr.. too bad lah... it was good.)

We thought of eating elsewhere, but did not want to risk being late. So we just ate at the library itself.

Sis and Momo had the sets that came with a drink, garlic bread, fruit and soup.

Garlic Bread

The soup was not too bad.

Tomato Soup

Sis had the Linguine Alfredo with Ham. $11.80

Pasta

I had the burger - Chicken Superburger + Egg. $10.80
They ran out of the usual burger bun, so had the focaccia bun. (with a top out of 60 cents)
Sis and Momo thinks my order was the best. LOL.

The patty is quite herby and it reminds sis of one diet that she had before. LOL...

Mega Burger

Momo had the chicken chop. $10.80

Sis was a little hungry after her pasta, so she ordered a chocolate truffle cake. $3.80
The cake's nice.

Ajisen Desserts @ IMM

Though the menu for their usual meals have changed a bit, as mentioned recent post, their desserts menu is still about the same.

We like to have some desserts here after meals. A little sweet things to sweeten up the day or night. ;-)

Green Tea Sundae with some of the chewy colourful rice cakes, red bean paste and fruits. Everyone loves this. Oh, those little brown balls are not choc chips, it's sour!! Tiny sour plums.

Green Tea Sundae

This green tea (i think it's mochi / rice cakes) are quite bitterly delicious. It's green tea powder over it.

Eating Mamee in the office...

The other day, a colleague in the office said, he brought some healthy snacks to work. Guess what did pass to us?

Mamee Monster. (OK. You must be laughing now right?)

Mamee

He said it's healthy because it's approved to be sold in the schools in Australia and Singapore that is participating in the "Healthy School Canteen" program.

It is a healthy snack??

It must have been a few years since I had it!

Mamee

Do you eat it crushed or just bite the whole noodle cake? ;-)

Oh yes, it's still as tasty as ever! I ate 1.5 packet. hehe.. Shared the first packet and took a second pack to eat myself.

Swensen @ Suntec City

This whole week around 20 over colleagues from various departments at my workplace are all attending a course at 'Oracle University' at Suntec City. If you have attended courses by them, you know that part of the course is a buffet lunch on the first day.

But due to the buffet place being not halal certified, the person who organised the course asked for it to be changed to somewhere halal. So, we were brought to Swensen's. (If you attended the courses few years ago, the place they bring you to is the buffet at Pan Pacific, but with austerity measures and cheaper course fees....... 'nuf said..)

We were told, order anything as long as it's around $20. You can imagine, everyone was flipping the menu trying to maximise their quota of $20. We were like, what to order to get the most out of it? Then someone even asked, must we include GST and service charge? haha.... We know they are just joking. No matter what we order, they will foot the bill.

We were seated on a long table. Most people don't know I document my daily meals, so I only took a few photo of lunch eaten by me and people sitting beside me.

The Mega Burger.

Mega Burger

I had the Half BBQ Chicken. There's mash potato behind it. It tasted quite ok. Can't really go wrong with chicken.

BBQ Half Chicken

Another colleague had the Spaghetti Aglio Olio.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio

What most of us did was to order something around $15 and order two scoops of ice cream to make it $20. LOL..

So here's some of the ice cream shots. I had Sticky Chewy Chocolate (behind) and Peanut Butter something. Nice...

Swensens Ice Cream

I have no idea what these other flavours are, but they all tasted very nice. We were sharing the ice cream around ;-)

NUS Open House @ Kent Ridge

Today's post is food for the brains, dedicating this post to the NUS Open House. I did my postgraduate education here at NUS.

If you have visited this food diary for some time, you would have realised that my colleagues, family, friends and I have lots of our meals around NUS / NUH / Science Parks area. Wanted to visit the places that we eat at? Why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone?

Make a trip down to NUS this weekend. (14 - 15 March 2009) They are having an Open House and it should be really really exciting I heard. If you are a parent / uncle / auntie / brother / sister who has someone who is going to university next year, you should bring them down.

(It's one of the best university in Asia. You can do an online search!)

After visiting NUS, you can visit the food stalls around NUS. Heard that the Student Union has some Food Bazaar going on. But if you want some places that is air-conditioned, try:
1) Megabites at the Science Canteen.
2) Sun Asian Bistro at the NUS Staff Club. (next to the Open House!)

(If you have someone who is a staff or member of the NUS Society,)
3) The Scholar at the Kent Ridge Guild House.
4) Cafe on the Ridge also at the Kent Ridge Guild House.

(There are many canteens, but they are usually closed during the weekend, not sure if they will open this weekend though)

Venturing further, you can also take a short bus ride to:
- Clementi, Sunset Way, Ulu Pandan area (Buses 96, 151 from NUS)
- Buona Vista, Dover, Ghim Moh, Holland Village area (Bus 95 from NUS)
- West Coast, Ayer Rajah area (Bus 189 from NUS, Buses 30, 51, 143 along Pasir Panjang Road)

Some nice restaurants are appearing in Biopolis, Fusionoplis and Science Park 1. My colleague seem to like these two new discoveries. Sarang a modern Korean cuisine at Science Park 1 is a tad expensive but it quite nice. Koryo at Fusionopolis is also quite nice. It's cheaper than Sarang though.

Khansama Tandoori Village @ Science Park I

Every now and then, the few of us in the office will crave for some nice Indian food. If you work in the west side of Singapore, you most probably have been given a flyer by this restaurant called Khansama. They will have someone at the train station giving out flyers, they slip their flyers on the car windscreens. They have people standing at traffic lights giving out flyers. In short, you can't miss them. LOL..

Maybe their boss believes it's an effective method. Maybe it is after all. When we want to have some decent Indian cuisine, we think of them. So, the few of us took the free Science Park shuttle bus to Science Park I.

So this was what we ate to satisfy our cravings. Their tandoori chicken. Unlike other places where their tandoori chicken's always dry, theirs is always moist. One of the better ones that we like.

The delicious Tandoori

Dpuk and 'Old Cat' both had their Chicken Tikka sets. 'Old Cat' was too tempted by what's written on the menu, all the different ways of preparing chicken all on a plate. It looks good right? Enough food to stuff them silly.

Chicken Tikka Set

A bit of close up ya. They look really tempting right?

Chicken Tikka Set

All of all different ways of preparation, both of them said this 'dark green' style is the nicest of them all.

Chicken Tikka Set

I had the Chicken Briyani instead. It comes in a steeel bowl and two bowls of sauces.

Nasi Briyani Set

Nice and crispy. Dip it with the youghurt sauce and it's delicious.

Papadam - a kind of keropok

There's around 4 chunks of chicken hidden inside this bowl of fragrant rice.

The Chicken hidden inside the Briyani

Another colleague 'pirate' had I think the butter chicken set meal.
His came with the super sweet dessert 'ping pong' ball. haha...

Satisfied our cravings for a while. :-)

Ajisen @ IMM

It's been a long time since we had anything in Ajisen, it seems the menu has changed quite a bit. The set deals seems to be less tempting now. The things that we wanted is no longer there. ;-(

But here's what we had. Since we are already here, we ordered the following to try.

Beef Ramen.

Beef Ramen

Tom Yam Seafood Ramen.

Seafood Tomyam Ramen

I decided to try something really different. I never had their rice dishes all these years. I picked something really healthy too!

Pork slices with vegetable shreds. It's blanched with water and served with a bowl of sauce to dip.

Boiled Pork Slices with shredded Veg

Comes with rice and miso soup.

Rice that comes with the set

Miso Soup that comes with the set

It was rather healthy tasting though. If you want to try something healthy, you can try this.

But I miss the range of sides dishes that you used to get from their old menu though.

Ju Bao @ Friends Home

Last week, Momo and I was invited to a friend's home for dinner. But we all know she does not cook. Hmmm....

For dinner, she even asked her neighbour to call the popular eatery that's not too far from her place called Ju Bao Hong Kong Cuisine. On our way to her house, we are to pick up the take-away she (or rather her neighbour who spoke cantonese) ordered through the phone. She prepared a very well done pot of rice though. Good thing she's good in cooking rice. LOL

Food that was ordered are those that will still taste good after being picked up. So here's what we had:

Pork Rib King. It's not too bad.

King Pork Ribs

Stir Fried Beef.

Stir Fried Beef

Roast Chicken.
It was too difficult to pour out the chicken from the containers, so it's a bit messy here ;-)

Roast Chicken

The 3 Egg and Vegetable Soup.

3 Egg and Vegetable Sosup

With nice warm rice and great fellowship, it was an enjoyable dinner.

I was the only guy with the few ladies there. Oh man.. The gossips that the ladies were yakking away, it was so interesting, the things the ladies talk about.... (I was bring transparent, I was sitting in a corner with my notebook and good thing I have mobile broadband. )

After dinner it was the Chocolate Fondue session. I heard that the ladies originally wanted to have a fondue session. The dinner was only added in later.

I was invited because I had a nice complete fondue set at home, and they needed it. LOL....

Hint: If you are making your own chocolate fondue at home, get good dark chocolate and a Mars Bar to add in!

Cookbook that raised $2.68 million for charity

My sis brought home a book yesterday that she bought for charity. It's a cookbook that I just found out managed to raised $2.68 million for the residents of Boon Lay.

Most of the recipes are from the residents of Boon Lay. There's also a recipe from Puan Noor Aishah, widow of Singapore's first president Encik Yusof Ishak. Also in it a recipe of 'Bangladeshi mutton curry', a Bangladeshi shipyard worker who lives in this area.

Boon Lay... Blending with Food

When I was flipping the pages, I thought the history of Boon Lay's rather interesting. I did not know that Boon Lay was named after Mr Chew Boon Lay.

Boon Lay is named after Chew Boon Lay

Someone mentioned Kueh Dadar in the comments section of yesterday's post. So here's part of the recipe.

Kueh Dadar, one of the many recipes inside this cookbook

To get the full recipe, get a copy of this cookbook from Boon Lay Community Centre.
Soft cover version at $25 and Hard cover version at $50.

Sis got it from her student's mother who is helping to sell the books.
My aunt say the book and said that's the book that appeared in the newspaper.

Read about it at the StraitsTimes.com or SoShiok.com

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Maxwell Road Food Centre

Last Saturday I was at the Maxwell Road Food Centre, and I was wondering what to eat. I asked what other friends are eating and they said, the famous chicken rice lah.

Oh ya, you can see the long long queue and since someone is already queueing up, we 'lompang' her to order for us as well.

Ya, if you notice on the photo, right at the top corner, that's Anthony Bourdain's face.

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

Rice was fragrant, nice and fluffy. Chicken was nice and smooth. Chilli's nice too. We expect it to be of some quality since it has a long queue.

There are many equally nice chicken rice around. If you are not in a hurry, you can queue up and try. ;-)

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

Had a vegetable to share as well.

Two Chefs Eating Place @ Commonwealth Crescent

Last Friday night, I met up with a few old classmates / people from my batch for dinner. One I had not met since 1992!

Found out that 2 of them actually live so near this place where we are eating. So they know exactly what to order. This place has got into the Sunday Times before and has become more popular ever since. ieat has also blogged about the Butter Pork Ribs that is very nice.

The lady who took our orders was so nice to us. She has this very motherly or maybe grandmotherly part of her that some how makes us very comfortable. Hey, this is a zhi char place and you don't get aunties who come to you and say eat slowly. haha... (ok, there was only one of them that's nice, the rest have fierce or i am busy look.)

Here's what we ate:

Cold Dish of Cockles (Hum) that's topped with lots of garlic, chilli and spring onions. We are cockle lovers and we ordered two of it. The sauce is soy sauce mix with something, that we can't really tell, but it's nice, very nice.

Cold Cockles

The Butter Pork Ribs that's so so tender. You wonder how they make it so tender. Hammer till soft or they use tenderiser. We will gladly be back for more of this!

Butter Pork Ribs

The ladies that was with us ordered this before and loved it, so now we are having it too. Honey Chicken that's once you have one piece, you gotta have a few pieces more.

Honey Chicken

This 3 eggs with Kau Kee vegetables soup seems to be available everywhere and everyone loves it. Their version is very well done. You can see the egg flower that's covering the soup right?

3 eggs with Kao Kee vegetable soup

This is Yam Strips. It's quite tasty and also something that you want to keep nibbling.

Yam Strips

The Cereal Prawns.
I don't know why, but I don't seem to like cereal prawns anymore. It's nice to others, but I got 'no feeling' for this dish everywhere I go. I wonder if it's because I don't like prawns anymore.

Cereal Prawn

We ordered a crab too. We asked what style of crab is their specialty. The auntie said: "Chilli Crab lor". Sweetish side but not too bad, in fact I think if my bro who is a gravy lover is here, he will wallop all the sauce up! LOL...

Chilli Crabs

It's a very busy place, but if you are a bit patient, the ladies/ aunties here will get you a table really soon. There was 6 of us, we split the bill and each of us paid $20.

The above is too much for 6 people. It could easily feed 8 adults. We were overly enthusiastic and ordered too much. We had 5 rice and 6 fried mun tows. Too much.

(hmmm is that why auntie so nice to us. LOL..)
