Curry Gardenn @ Turf City

On Tuesday this week, we realized so many of our colleagues were on leave. 'Wire' our colleague noticed something else, all the anti-Indian food colleagues are all on leave! That leaves us, all the Indian food lovers a chance to hunt for some delicious Indian food.

So, he suggested that we should all go try this Indian food place at Turf City. It was only 4 of us, so we hailed a cab to Turf City.

We ate at Curry Gardenn (yes, double n). This place is actually opened by an IT guy! Yes, the boss Mr Udaya Kumar is a .Net programmer! But he leave the running of the business to his brother Ravi.

While we sat down and waited for our food, papa dams were served. If you are wondering, it's free flow. ;-)

The masala chicken that we had. It's also their signature dish. Delicious.

The spinach. Take your veg guys.

And the chick peas. This is quite yummy!

With our beautiful super long grain rice! The portion of rice is a bit small, so you might need seconds.

The main reason we are here. For the fish head! Curry Gardenn's signature dish.

The fish head is cooked without coconut milk, so it might taste a bit different from the usual fish head. No MSG added too. The fish head is only cooked when you order it, so you got to wait. Our wait was around 20 mins wait. By the time it came, we already finished whatever is shown above. LOL

The fish head comes bubbling hot in the claypot. See the steam! If you notice, you can see the curry bubbling too. :-)

It's a whole fish head. The curry is on the sweetish side. Today's fish had some slight fishy smell though. Wire said it is usually better on other days.

But is sure was tasty though. We finish every single bit of it. Even the gravy was not spared. LOL...

While we were eating our food, the next table had 4 angmoh kids eating Roti Tisu. It was so huge and tempting that when we finished our food, we ordered one to try too. We enjoyed it as much as the kids did too.

That's Ravi at the cash register. ;-)

Another satisfying Indian lunch. All of the above, rice at 6 portions, plus 4 drinks cost $46.
Think the fish head is $16.

Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon @ Bukit Timah Food Centre

This Satay Bee Hoon stall at Bukit Timah Food Centre almost always have a snaking queue. Why? People just love it. Me included. Maybe it's the Satay sauce that covers it?

Decided to ruffle it a bit, so that you can see the bee hoon below. I think the texture of the bee hoon's nice, that's why I like it.

Well if you wanna try it, watch the opening hours. They don't open on Mondays and Tuesdays.
On Wednesdays to Friday, they only open in the evening.

The best time is to go during the weekends, like what I did.

Bi Feng Tang @ Food Republic, Wisma Atria

Last Friday evening, Momo and I roamed around Food Republic at Wisma Atria hoping to grab some quick dinner but there's no seat around.

We then walked past the stalls in the middle of the food court that has reserved seats. Oh yes, we are definitely going in instead of walking more rounds.

Only when I sat down, did I realise it is Bi Feng Tang, hey, it's the one that I ate before at Bukit Panjang.

We were promptly served pickles. They sure whet your appetite ;-)

We ordered a quick simple meal. (so that we can meet up with sis later at Tangs for shopping. haha) I had the char siu rice. $4.20

This is what Momo has been eating for the last few weeks - Porridge diet!
Sliced Fish Porridge $5.80 She thinks porridge elsewhere taste better. ;-p

Ordered two other sides dishes to complement it. The Shredded Duck and Jelly Fish $5.00
The duck's hidden below the Jelly Fish if you are wondering. Spicy and not too bad.

Had a Crispy Fried Quail too. $4.50
Quails are tiny, so the chopsticks there for you to compare the size. :-)
Crispy yet the tiny amount of meat inside still moist. (ok ok, heard you... these tiny birds have not much meat, it's practically eating yummy skin.)

Ramen Santouka @ The Central

Last Saturday, Momo and I had lunch with AromaCookery. Camemberu could not make it at the last minute due to some emergency at home. Southernoise went to Batu Pahat to have durians! Nic is enjoying Indian food where it originated from.

We had lunch at Ramen Santouka, The Central.

We shared this oh so good, melt in your mouth Pork Cheeks. It's one thing that you got to eat if you like melt in your mouth pork. Tokusen Toroniku, $8

So, good, I am showing it here again. They only serve a limited amount each day.

Momo had the Shio Ramen. $12.
Salt based broth Ramen. This was it before she requested them to cut the noodles. (Momo has joined the 'vain' gang around Singapore wearing braces. LOL)

Aromacookery had the Shoyu Ramen ($12).
The soy sauce broth is a bit saltier than the salt based broth. I though it was nice though.

Me, I had the set. Unlike the other two, I did not have breakfast. I woke up and was too busy watching the Korean drama "Lobbyist". LOL

I had the Char Siu Rice & Shio Ramen Set. $16. It comes with a komi-tamago (egg) too.
It's actually a better deal! The ladies ordered their eggs separately for $1 each.

If you are paying with a DBS/POSB card, and you order the set meal, you get a free drink too. I had the oolong tea. So that means, we pay the same, I get more stuff! hehe..

Yummy yummy is the word. But for it to be yummy, you must have a high tolerance for salty food. It's one of the saltiest soup around. :-)

The ramen comes with 3 slices of meat too. 2 are the normal cuts. The 3rd piece is the melt in your mouth Tokusen Toroniku.

The char siu rice taste quite good too. Delicious char siu.

Though it was really salty, I still finished my soup and everything else too!

Be prepared to feel thirsty after. But no worries, they give each table a big jug of ice cold water. :-)

Cool Rhino Cooling Water vs Three Legs Cooling Water

Sis and I, we were walking around at Fairprice and saw this new drink being promoted. Cool Rhino Cooling Water. It sure caught our eye and we thought why not try it? Sis has been feeling heaty because of the weather and was having a sore throat.

We saw that it should be drunk 4 times daily. Oh well, we got 2 bottles of it since it was on promotion.

But that's only 2 times, we need more. We decided it was just to try it out so we did not bother to take more. As we walked along the aisle, we saw ey, this is also something similar, and it's like much much cheaper. We remembered our older cousin who says this drink is good when one is feeling heaty, so we thought maybe this 'old people' drink might work.

The next morning when we woke up, we took a close look. Hey! Both are manufactured by the same company! Same ingredients too!

We concluded that the old design was for the old timers who are used to it, maybe a name like Three Legs appeal to them.

The new design is to catch youngsters attention! Cool Rhino sounds cool right? We laughed our heads off!

If you are wondering how it taste? Both taste the same. It taste like plain water except that you get a cooling sensation on your mouth.

Chicken Feet @ Kopitiam NUH

2 days ago (Thursday), we visited a colleague who has just given birth at NUH. After the visit, we though that we would visit the NUH Kopitam at Kent Ridge wing.

Ooo.. the chicken feet that had stopped selling sometime ago is back! (It might be back earlier, but we have not been visiting the hospital. who does? haha..)

Oh man, you should see the 'glee' on 2 of my colleague's faces. They only had 3 plates to sell us. So, we took it all. Today's feet is so big!

Fat & juicy too. :-p

The first 3 plates we got.

Oh, 'wire' was on overdrive. He wanted more and was willing to wait for 20 mins for the next batch to be ready. We waited, (while we had other stuff). Here's the 2nd batch. 3 more plates of chicken feet.

Are the chicken on steroids or what? They seem to be big!

What is left behind... LOL.
Some of you might be totally put off right?

Well, we think it might be the cheapest chicken feet you can find. $2 usually. But with the "yellow hospital kopitiam card", you get 20% off, and each plate costs only $1.60.

Paradise on Earth @ Tanjong Katong

This might sound silly, but we do silly things don't we? It was one of our colleague's birthday. But when we told him we wanted to celebrate by treating him lunch, he declined. (This guy is known to take leave on his birthday the last few years, but this year he came to work, but still did not want to join us for lunch hmm..)

So guess what? We all still decided that we shall have a nice meal outside, celebrating his birthday on his behalf without him. (We gluttons just want to find a reason to go out and eat)

'Old Cat' has been wanting to go to have Steamboat at this place in Tanjong Katong for a long time. After the first time they were there, they have been wanting to go back. I got to join them this time (Tuesday this week).

What an interesting name ya? Paradise on Earth.

While we were thinking what to eat, we were served achar. It's quite delicious you know. Yes, it was gone in less than 1 minute!

There was 5 kinds of soup base to choose from, we chose the 'dried scallop' and the 'mala' soup. (The others are tom yam, satay and I can't remember the fifth.
This place use induction cookers. No gas fumes. yey!

We took the lunch buffet and we got to pick from the "B" and "C" menu. This is our first round. We had like 3 and a half rounds.

From the menu, if you order the fried rice, it comes fried. (No you do not need to fry it yourself haha) It is quite delicious too!

I think this is one of the quality steamboats you can find that is still priced reasonably.
You really get a satisfied meal. Just as with any steamboat meals, you enjoy the cooking process and the chatting time while you wait for the food to cook.

To avoid crowds, come in the afternoon. We were the only table there, so service was excellent. The food's fresh too.

Spizza @ Balmoral Plaza

Last Saturday, it was our catch up / makan session / birthday celebration with our classmates / course mates / uni mates from Melbourne night again. It's incredible that we make it a point to meet up and we have been doing this over 2 years now!

From facebook, we found other Melbourne friends that we lost contact, and invited them in as well. This time we initially had around 20 over adults who could actually make it, but due to last minute emergencies (eg, 1 family had to quarantine themselves because their child had HFMD, one had to 'nurse' her husband who was sick, etc...)

But we still had 12 adults and 6 children showing up. We had a list of venues that we wanted to go, but we end up at Spizza at Balmoral Plaza because of majority vote? haha...

The only photo I took of the menu. I thought it was so interesting that they have the pizza covered from A to Z!

We ordered a few starters to share, this is one of them. The calamari rings.

The kids had pasta etc, but most of us ordered the pizza to share.
We are quite the gluttony type, so must have ordered around 6 or so pizza to share around.

As the table was quite long, here are some photos that is within the reach of my hands. LOL. I can't remember the names of them. But they were all quite delicious.

They are all the thin crust pizza.

And quite generous with the toppings.

They were quite juicy as well.

They are also baked in a big 'wood' oven. This was taken as we were leaving.

The night was good. Meeting up and chatting and catching up with a family that we had not met for the longest time.

Prices are on the higher side. Someone was saying, if only it was 'la prochetta' in Melbourne's pricing. LOL. Our total bill was $313. But there's a 10% if you use a HSBC card.

Desserting @ Ajisen, IMM

Oh, the temporary insanity we had about snacking after lunch did not stop with what you saw yesterday. The menu tempted us with the following:

Macha Sundae $4. With corn flakes below too.

The Zenzai (Red Bean Dessert). $6.20
Ice cream, dango and red bean paste.

Oh, this pickle goes with the above. Savoury & the sweet stuff above. Quite good!

The Macha Sundae Anmitsu $6.80
Red bean paste + little cubes of jelly + a cup of black honey to go with it.

The was eaten on Sunday, and on the next day, I hopefully have burnt off the calories in the Body Combat class. Any one here also attends Body Combat classes? As I am typing this, I am still have aches all over from Monday's class.

Snacking @ Ajisen, IMM

After the pasta (that we had yesterday), we were feeling a bit gluttony and decide to snack a bit. Aunt and I thought we would like to have KFC! (blame it on that silly KFC ad on tv with the $5.95 cab fare that has to be paid with the KFC meal.)

Walking around, we realised that there's no more KFC at IMM! There used to be a 3-in-1 KFC/Pizza Hut/Taco Bell right? It's no longer there!

So, we thought of the fried chicken wings at Ajisen!

We snacked on Tako Yaki $4.50

Ah, the chicken wings $3.80

Black Pepper Ton Toro $4.80

Sis wanted okonomiyaki, but they ran out of it, so she ordered something that looked similar. haha. A Tonpei Yaki. $3.80

Our cousin had her dose of Salmon Sashimi. We had desserts too. ;-)

We were happy after snacking and went home to sleep for the afternoon!

Seafood Pasta @ Bagus Food Court, IMM

Things that kids nowadays like to eat. This is what my P6 cousin recommend I eat. She ordered this for her lunch today and said I should try it too, and so I did.

For $5, this is not too bad lah for food court pasta. The sauce is decent, a bit sweetish side though, the seafood consists of 2 prawns, few sotong rings and imitation crab meat. Hey, the pasta is al dente too. LOL..

Last night, a few colleagues and I all went for a free movie courtesy of one of our vendors, BT Frontline. As the movie was at 6:15pm, we only had dinner after the movie.

Wondering where to go, we ended up at Chicago's Steakhouse. We did not know what to eat so we took a long time to choose. We ended up having the following:

"Old Cat" had the Seafood Spaghetti.

Dpuk had their signature dish, the flaming fireball steak. Look at the fire!

He wanted Medium Rare, and it came out quite correct ya?

Mrs Dpuk had the Beer Batter Fish & Chips.

I had the BBQ Spring Chicken. I think this place is good for their fish & chips and steak. Not their poultry. :-)

It comes with soup too btw.

Ms Preggy had something else. There's a promotion for the western sets where you get a scoop of ice cream for only 50 cents.

Birthday Supper @ Lau Pa Sat

On Tuesday night, after our Bible Study Fellowship lessons, 16 of us went out for supper. It was to celebrate our dear friend Matthew's birthday. (Btw, we are also studying the book of Matthew. :-) )

It seems that Lau Pa Sat has become our new makan haunt. It has been 'siao/gila' satay mood for the last few months. We have been coming here since we realize some time ago that our other supper place, does not offer 50% off desserts for dining in anymore.

Here's some of the things we had. The sticky red chicken wings.

Our dear Matthew got this plate complimentary from the Satay man. Do not ask how he did it, but he did! LOL. The prawns can eat lah if you have peculiar taste buds. LOL

But it's the Satay that we like. After trying so many stalls, it seems we only like 1 stall. We like Satay Power. Everyone's tastebuds are different, but we found that we all seem to agree on the same thing. Very united huh. LOL

We ordered 4 kinds. Duck, Beef, Mutton and Chicken. 15 each, so we have 60 sticks to share around.

We also had kueh pai ti.

And the same Sisters Rojak again.

Plus desserts that we pretend to be the birthday cake. LOL

We had other things too, but they have been posted here before, so enough of it lah.
Oh yes, to save money, ask people who have the kopitiam card to pay first. You get 10% off. Then split the bill accordingly. That's what we do.

Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Cheong Chin Nam Road

Last Sunday, we had relatives visiting from the northern states of Malaysia, all the way from Kelantan. They told aunt that they miss the chicken rice that they ate here at this shop.

So, we met and ate at 5 Star Chicken Rice. We had 7 of us. The whole chicken came in two plates of halves. Yes, we like the chicken, and so did our guests. I love their minced ginger and chilli that goes with it. yummmy.

We also had 2 veg dishes. The Sambal Kangkong.

And the 'fan su ye'.

We also had the minced meat on tofu. It's not bad, but I think something's wrong with me. I used to like tofu a lot, but have since the last few months, avoid eating it unless it's in front of me. I won't purposely order it. I wonder why....

The hainanese pork chop. This was ordered because half of our guests are hainanese. LOL.

We asked them how this compares to the original way that the hainanese prepares it. The answer was, it depends on individual families and they have their own variations of it. (were they just being polite? haha but they did say the hainanese chicken was nice though.)

We had a wonderful meal and a wonderful time catching up too. I havae been wanting to visit Kelantan for the longest time. One day.. one day....

He seems to like it. He finished every single drop of the curry!

A nice warm bowl of rice and curry. Excellent combi right?

Sis had the kaya toast. Hmm she was not too happy with it though.

She said something's not so correct. Yup, she has a sensitive taste buds.

What I had was a cup of 'fishing' / 'tiao her' (hokkien), while others had the Teh-C, Kopi-C, Teh-C-Peng etc... the combi was so complex.

Rong Liang @ Clementi West St 2

Saturdays have been so so busy the last few weeks. So many things to do, so little time. Sis was setting exam papers, I was preparing slides for next day's church service because I am scheduled to be on duty. We did not realise it was already past 7.30 pm. Momo came over earlier and was patient enough not to 'disturb' even though I think she's already hungry. haha..

Hunger gives people headache, and we had headache at around 7.30 pm. Sis said let's have a quick dinner and she wants some soup and roast meat. So Momo drove us to Clementi West St 2 for dinner.

We had two soups, one old cucumber soup and one sze chuan vegetable soup.

Then we said, a mix of roast meats for 3 persons.

We found the duck very nice tonight. At least they have not skimp on the seasoning and stuff.

Just the other day, colleagues and I went to ABC Market and the famous 'shao la' stall that's near the POSB ATM. Oh, 6 mouths the other confirmed that it did not taste good.

The famous Tiong Bahru Roasted Pig seems to have fallen out of favour too. The queue's gone and last month or so, we gave it the 3rd chance, and confirmed it has fallen out of favour. Wonder what's happening to all of them??

At least this stall's still ok. Let's hope rising cost wont ruin all the nice makan places around.

Suppose to post other food photos that our friend Mag had with us, but the photos all turned outl blur because we were sitting in the open air and there's not enough lighting.

But, we did take a photo of the Rojak that we ordered at the stall before walking back to where we were sitting. ;-)

Few week's ago, we got to the know about this Rojak stall in Lao Pa Sat that is apparently quite famous. It's called Sister's Rojak. (Btw, there's a Brother's Rojak in Clementi!, wonder if anyone wants to open Parent's Rojak or Cousin's Rojak. haha)

We found it nice, and we had guests with us, we went to buy it.

Since there's so many of us, we had the $6 version. We were told the $6 version will include the sotong.

Not bad. The sauce is enough to cover everything nicely. The consistency of the sauce is also ok. I am surprise I ate 'nangka' / jackfruit in it too!

Ming Yen BBQ Seafood @ Lau Pa Sat Festival Market

Last night, our friends flew in from Sydney on transit back to UK. Mag, our Aussie friend said that she wanted to eat at Lao Pa Sat. Hmmm I wonder if it's because the Tourism Board has been advertising it in Sydney!

She wanted to eat local food and after that go over to snaps photos of the Merlion. There were 8 of us. When we sat down, the different laminated menus all appeared in front of us! We also happened to sit in front of Ming Yen, so we guess we would try it out.

So what did we order? We had fried HK noodle, which I forgot to take photos of!
Then we had sambal LaLa. Sis and I think that it taste quite good. We call it LaLa, but our Aussie friends call it pipis.

We had sambal kangkong too. Missing the 'wok hei' though.

We had baby squid too. Oh. these are really crispy and tasty. Our guests loved it, so did we. ;-)

We also had ikan bakar / sambal stingray. We all loved it, except for Mag's other half. LOL. We could see that he wanted to spit the fish out after he had taken a bite. We told him he did not have to eat it, just leave it on the side.

We also had prawn balls/rolls. Mag's other half said he wants to eat prawns but prawns without shells. So we ordered this. I normally do not like this, but we found this quite tasty.

Sis and I agreed that the food from this stall is not bad at all, but it's a bit touristy priced. ;-p
Since we had 8 of us, we had other stuff too, CKT (again!), Chai Tow Kueh, Rojak, etc... I will post those photos tomorrow. ;-)

Friends @ Jelita

On Wednesday, our Care Group have our outing day (during the night haha...). We have an outing day after a few weeks of lessons. Our CG leader said let's try Friends, so he picked us up from our work place and drove us there.

We only had 4 tonight. 2 other members are in Japan honey-mooning.
3 of us arrived first. We placed our orders and out came the bread.

Sis smiled and said, pinch, butter, eat, pinch, butter, eat. We saw someone who was trying very hard to saw the bread with his knife 2 tables away. :-O

AQ ordered a Caesar Salad for starter.

Sis and I took the 1-1 set meal deals. It looks liked a very good deal. :-)
So, sis had the "Yarra Valley tomato bisque" I tried a bit of hers, quite tasty.

I had the "Tasmanian apple wood smoked salmon." Salmon was nice with the leaves :-)

I

For our mains, AQ had fish. I can't remember what it is called, but the receipt says Coral Trout. :-)

Sis has this thing about clear food nowdays. She had the "Queensland braised Halibut".
(with spring vegetables and young peas, white wine broth and smoked bacon)

Me? I had the "Pan-Seared “Sakura” chicken breast stuffed with macadamia"
(with seasonal vegetables & ginger orange sauce). Nice and I like the veg.

While we were half way through our mains, YL arrived. He said he had dinner because his mum cooked and he has to eat. LOL

So he joined us for dessert. We all shared the following:

Fuji Apple & Rhubarb Crumble served with Vanilla Ice Cream

Bitter chocolate mousse with raspberry compote.
Chocolate's bitter as in the name. I like bitter chocolate!

Pavlova with passion fruit and fresh berries.
(Nice, but only if you are a super sweet tooth person.)

It was an enjoyable evening with our CG mates. Usually, we will be quickly having dinner so that we can start our CG on time and also end on time.

Lunch @ NUS Engineering Canteen

Oh.. we realise that food prices have gone up in all the canteens in NUS! Prices have gone up between 20-50 cents depending on the food and stalls.

But I guess it's still one of the affordable places to eat for people working in NUS/NUH/Science Parks I & II.

Haha.. I went to the Indian Stall again today, in fact 2 other colleagues did too. This is my lunch for $2. I was full, but colleagues still felt like eating. LOL.

So we went to have our regular calcium break behind the canteen. Oh no! The sundae machine's not working today. Then when our colleague asked for Lemon Lime, it's out of stock too! Aiyo, what happened?

So we ended up having fries and orange juice / coke instead.
A colleague who pumped the tomato sauce and we all thought it looked like a lump of xxxx. LOL

Yes, lunch time is also creativity juice time for my colleagues.

Two larges fries all poured into the serving tray. It seems that is the way we eat it. Do you all do the same? ;-)

Dinner @ Aunt's Kitchen

Aunt's Kitchen is really our Aunt's Kitchen. Hmm it's a nice name ya?

This was dinner a few days ago at Uncle and Aunt's house. Aunt and her sis was in the kitchen busy preparing the following food for us. There's more, but my photos did not turn out well.

The mussels that is delicious. Doesn't look spicy?

Don't be deceived, it is! We could hear them choking in the kitchen when the sambal paste was cooking. The rest of us were enjoying the aroma. ;-)

Aunt said there's some new sausages being sold, so trying it out. Not too bad. Forgot to ask where it's from.

Won't be sotong eating sotong one lah.
Eat on....

This simple looking thing is everyone's favourite! 3 layer meat stir fried with black sauce.
You can go on and on and on... popping them into your mouth with your chopsticks :-)

We also had chicken and salmon head soup with mushrooms.
Home cook food always taste so much better ya?

Benkei Japanese / Korean Cuisine @ NUS Science Canteen

Today, I met an insurance agent or rather they are now called Financial Consultants friend and also a former uni housemate, Kevin, for lunch.

When he arrived at my office, I was famished, so we went to the NUS Science Canteen for a quick bite. We went to the Japanese Stall to try out the sets.

Kev had the Salmon Set ($4.20). He said it's not bad. Doesn't really have the 'fishy' smell that cooked salmon has.

I had the Saba Teriyaki ($4). I have been wanting to try this since another colleague had it and said it is not bad. I like fish, so I like it. :-)

Both were sets meals, so they came with rice and a soup.
The soup, you know why the photo is not posted up here. LOL. Everything else is good.

After lunch, we discussed how I should be more adequately protected. ;-)
You should too you know....

Sun Asian Bistro @ NUS Staff Club

Last week, colleagues and I decided that let's pay Sun Asian bistro a visit. The last time we were there, it was still in 'test' mode. We wonder how it is now...

So what did we have? We shared 2 starters. This time we had the Smoked Duck Breast Salad. We also had the sausages.

Two colleagues had the pasta.

Another had the Beef Hor Fun. Looks nice eh...

This is the Fish and Chips that Ms Preggy had.

I had the Seoul Bulgogi Miso Rice. Quite good.

Another two colleagues had the Matahari Istimewa. Looks small? No, it's not. It's very filling according to the two of them.

This place is getting popular. We realise that many people are coming here for lunch.

Lunch @ Bukit Timah Food Centre

Some shots of the lunch we had at Bukit Timah Food Centre today.
Walked around and did not know what to eat. End up eating CKT. From Stall 02-181. The stall somewhere in the middle, beside the Chai Tow Kueh stall. Heard that this old man has been frying CKT for a very very very long time here. Yummy...

The urge for rice flour produced food did not end with CKT. I had 2 pieces of Chwee Kueh too. ;-)

Sis had the pasta from "Mien" instead.

Looks plain? But it's tasty and very fast. You get it done in 2-3 minutes.

What's this? Ham Chim Peng. Forgot the stall number, but this was what was left. It sells out very fast. Many like the 'you tiao' here.

Hope you had a great week.

The Stamford @ Kent Ridge Guild House

Earlier this week, I attended a course called "Achieving A Leading Image" that's organized by the training department of where I work. It was conducted by Miss Singapore-Universe in 1987, Ms Marion Nicole Teo. I did not know who the trainer is until the class members started asking her about the experience of being Miss Singapore-Universe. ;-)

Since this is a food blog, I shall not bored you about the need of guys needing to moisturize, etc. But there's a lunch segment where we are taught the proper way of eating a western meal. It was fun.

This was the menu. We went to the Kent Ridge Guild House of the National University of Singapore Society to have lunch. (well, because it is nearby ;-) )

We were role playing. Half of the group was the guest of a formal business lunch. The other half will play host. Oh, the rules and protocols, it's so funny at times.

This warm foccacia roll is yummy. If you have already knew it, the butter knife is only for spreading butter, not to cut the roll. It's a pinch, butter, eat... pinch, butter, eat. [Yes, pinch, must be civilised a bit. LOL]

Always paced your eating to your guests. If they eat slowly, eat slowly too. Never finish the meal faster than them.

Then comes the soup. Drink quietly, hold the spoon correctly, scoop the soup the correct direction, (away from you) and into the tip of your lips.

The soup's so so lah... Oh yes, always ask your guest if they want salt and pepper before taking it for yourself.

The mains was salmon steak. It was quite delicious. Yes, we always like our salmon as sashimi, but they managed to cook it that it did not smell so 'fishy'.

We were reminded, that uses of fork and knife. Did you know that your fork has directions that it can face? If you need the spokes of your fork facing up when you are using your left hand, put down your knife that you are holding with your right hand and switch the fork over. (hope you get what I mean)

It was a tedious lunch. But it was also a nice time getting to know colleagues from other departments that we have never ever met!

Oh yes, the potatoes taste good.

Yes, budget constraints, so our company's budget for the training was only to have a 3 course meal. So, the last course was the dessert.

By now, we have finished using the different utensils that is on the left and right of us. Think you guys should know the uses of the different kinds of forks and knives and spoons.

Dessert is the part where it's free from any rules. Just eat!
The chocolate truffle cake was delicious! Ooo.. I can have more of that anytime. But not everyone on the table likes chocolate though.

That was a serious lunch that was so entertaining and fun for us.
After lunch it was the colour coordination time. Getting to know if you are a cool or warm person and what colours you are to wear.

We did not eat at the main restaurant. I think the food's from The Stamford.
We ate in a private room, so that we would not disturb other guest at the restaurant.
It also allow Marion to talk and show us all the way with a formal lunch set up and walking in, where to seat your guests, etc.. all the protocols.

Singapore Food Festival Official Launch @ Lao Pa Sat

Was at the Official Launch of the Singapore Food Festival earlier this evening. Met up with Nic of KHKL and AromaCookery today.

For the journalistic post, read AromaCookery's (she has done a good job), read tomorrow's newspaper or watch the news. :-)

There was an official launch by Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr Lee Yi Shyan. He cooked a plate of char kuey teow. Then there was performances etc...

Today, I am eating. Posting up the photos of the real food that I get to eat. We had a stored value card that was loaded with some money to let the guest buy food. It seems that the best Char Kway Teow is from this stall in Lao Pa Sat. The queue was long, and I mean really long. It's Stall 77 if you are looking for it.

The wait was worth it. It was delicious. (yes, it's oily, that's why it is delicious!)

The 'black' version of the Chai Tow Kway (Carrot Cake) is also quite decent. I ate quite a lot of it.

I wonder from which stall Nic bought this from. The rojak was quite good too.

This is from the food sample platter that was served to us.
(wonder when it was prepared, it was a bit too cold to eat)

Wishing all of you a great weekend.

Pop by Lao Pa Sat if you all have the time. It has been newly refurbished. The old 'Mcdonald's style' tables are gone. It has been replaced with modern 'olden style' tables and stools.

City Gas Singapore Chef Awards 2008 Competition Finalists (Part II)

More of the yummy photos. Which one will win the competition?
I kinda like the 2nd dish on today's post. Since we don't get to taste it, we have to imagine it.

So I imagined the pork ribs, braised under slow charcoal fire, with the fragrance of herby bak kut teh, it would have been fabulous. Then I thought of the yam cakes that mum makes. She puts in it, her children's favourite ingredients. Mushroom, 'hae bee' (dried shrimps), 3 layer marbled pork, with the aroma of 5 spice powder. Half of the above inside the yam cake, the other half as fragrant toppings. Haha. I was thinking of mummy's food instead.

Back to the photos. You all can also imagine like me. It reminds me of the Korean Show 'Da Chang Jin', where the character in the show can imagine and mix flavours in her head.

Enjoy...

If you are a budding cook, hope the above gives you inspiration to cook!

Singapore Food Festival 2008

Today, I went with Nic of Black Tie, White Lie to the Singapore Food Festival 2008 Press Conference. (Since when did we become the press?)

We got an invite about last week to attend the SFF press conference. We were wondering should we go? We thought, why not? So we took a day off our normal working life and experience being 'the press' for a day.

It was held at the Fort Canning Centre. We were greeted by this banner. Somehow it just makes you happy doesn't it?

Hey, this man is the poster boy of Singapore's Teh Tarik! After taking his photo, (later in the afternoon), I was flipping through the SFF Official Guide, I realize it's the same person!

The Singapore Food Festival aims to bring back nostalgia of the olden times. Look at these tin cans. If you are free this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the opening celebrations will be on at Lau Pa Sat. Boon Tat Street will even have movie screenings. Like the old old time.

The 'media' was treat to some food too. We had Satay, Chicken Rice (that's Sakura Chicken - Chicken Rice), plus other things.

Well, we did attend their press conference, so am obliged to show you, the people that make the Singapore Food Festival 2008 possible. Everyone had a teh tarik, coffee, coke and a tiger beside them. Aha, from the photo, you can see what they like!
