Sushi Tei @ Raffles City Shopping Centre

It's the Robinsons Cardmembers preview sale yesterday and today. After work, met up with sis and her colleague so we can see if there's any bargains. Robinsons at Raffles City SC is so so packed! Just too many people and its sale, people in Singapore gets selfish and blocks lanes etc..

Give up shopping. We are going for dinner instead. Half an hour of wait, we got in to Sushi Tei. Sis colleague is a vegetarian by choice.

She ordered a Yasai Miso Soup. $6 It's a very big bowl of soup!

And ate it with assortment of sushi. $6

Sis and I, other than stealing her colleague's sushi, we had the Chanko Nabe. $22. We had the spicy miso base. It's on a big metal container that's over the portable gas cooker.

It has mushroom, cabbages, tao pok, leek, tofu, carrots, potatoes, melon and udon.

It also comes with minced chicken on bamboo. We just scrap and shape them into balls and it goes into the so called 'steamboat'.

Very soupy soupy night. After that we left this place and headed for desserts.
$36.65 after a 10% sushi tei members discount.

Spice Peranakan @ Bukit Timah Shopping Centre

Last Sunday after church, our lunch was not too far away from church. We wanted to have lunch and go home and sleep. We went to Bukit Timah Shopping Centre. Aunt said that she saw this place, but have not tried it yet. So we decided to go and 'try try' lah..

It's at one end of the shopping centre, quite hidden if you don't walk to the end.
Basement 1, B1-18 if you are looking for it.

They have a menu board that has boxes in front of the name of dishes. When it's ticked, that means they have it that day. How interesting. They cook less things on Sundays it seems as there's less people around. It's a mum and pop shop.

So what did we have? We had the Chap Chye.

We also tried the stuff sotong. The sotong is stuffed with fish meat we were told. But I can't tell what it is. The sauce is quite ok.

This is the Asam Fish. It was quite all right too. The fish was a mackerel cut into 2 parts, and it is quite decent size.

One thing though. After our meal, we thought we ordered Asam Prawns, where are the prawns?? Then we realise we were served fish instead!haha...

Next was the fish that we actually ordered. It's called Ikan Tempra. The selar fish was fried till very crispy. "very garing" as they say it in Malay. I like this because I like to eat this kind of 'cheap' fish (that's no longer cheap) and it is covered with onions with black sauce, which is my fav too. (yes, very bias i know)

We also had Ayam Penyet. The penyet is not really penyet right? Look how high it still is. Maybe they forgot to hammer it! haha.. But it was fried very nicely. Plus the Tempra style again which had my favourite 'dao you' onions.

The food's overall's quite ok. We had 3 persons, we paid $26 for the dishes above.

But..... they got to learn how to cook rice! Yes, rice! Rice is the most important thing for this kind of dishes right? Rice that was served was half cooked. The middle part of the rice was still hard. Definitely not enough water. Alamak right?

Give chance a bit lah, next time hopefully they get to cook their rice properly. Maybe it is a new hired hand in the kitchen that cooked the rice. If rice is still not ok the next time, just tapow the dishes home, then eat it with freshly cooked rice.

Talking about rice, I miss the Bario rice from Sarawak. Must ask someone visiting Sarawak to bring back some!

ieat Makan Session at Joe's Kitchen @ Bukit Merah (Part II)

We had to much to eat that posting all the photos will be too much even to view on one day. LOL. We were really filled to the brim.

Next to be served was a plate of fried fish. Hmmm how do we eat it? (I think many of us were thinking, how ah? How to eat? What goes with what? People also dare ask too much, wait malu how? But our tables we were not malu, we just asked each other. haha...)

The fish pieces above are for this super fiery tom-yam soup. Innocent looking tomato-ish soup eh? Wait till you have it. 5 mins later, you get the satisfaction of a really warm stomach. (The weak ones will have to run for cover.. LOL)

You put the fish in the soup when you want to eat it so it stays crispy.

Next to come out was the beef green curry. The beef is the tenderized kind of beef. I personally do not like the kind of texture, some people like it. Those beef that taste like it has been 'expanded' kind of feeling. (not sure if you get what I mean)

I think my favourite for the night is this fish! Deep fried till it is crispy, and the super reddish sauce over it. I love it! The red sauce is not as spicy as you think. (yes you can see all the chilly seeds and all, but...) It is more tomato-ish in taste. I can just eat this and I am satisfied.

After the fish was out, we were told. Pace yourself! More food to come! WHAT?! More?

Yes, next came the Duck Red Curry. What you find inside are lots of fruits! Whole green grapes, pineapple, etc..

Next is basil leaves with minced pork. Very homely dish and very comforting. "Drazarael", the person sitting beside us was especially delighted with this. You can see it on his face.

What Drazarael was waiting for the whole night finally arrived! The crab vermicelli. He is a die hard fan of ieat and he was describing all the postings by ieat.

The tang hoon has soaked up all the gravy from the crab.

When the dish came, we dugged right to the bottom of the claypot to search for the "fatty roast pork" that's suppose to be under it. Drazarael said that it was described in ieat's blog that this is the secret to the aroma of the dish.

The fatty pieces of roast pork at the bottom is suppose to melt and aroma of it permeates to the whole dish. We found 2 pieces of it. LOL. So we dug. Showing you here the proof of the roast pork. haha...

Then came the last dish. A very nicely done Kangkong with the 'wok hei' smell.

But wait! There's more! 2 more actually. 2 desserts to come. While waiting for desserts, at our table, we were speculating what is coming up. We were thinking that is might be 'mango with sticky rice' and 'red ruby'.

Well, our guess of the mango with sticky rice was correct! The mango is nice and sweet. The rice is savoury. We were just too full to eat the rice.

Then the last and finale. Thai Tapioca. I am not a tapioca person but I tasted it and hey, not that bad.

It was a wonderful night of eating. Especially if you do not know 90% of the people there. You sign up for the makan, arrive, pick a seat, sitting beside people you do not know, and chat and eat. We are quite crazy right? LOL...

So, if you want to try it out, you can head down to:
Joe's Kitchen
Blk 125, Bukit Merah Lane 1
#01-182
(Opp Alexandra Hospital)
11am to 3pm 5pm to 10pm
Tel : 62708484

Since Ikea's kitchen that is nearby is closed for renovation and Anchorpoint is forever packed (because Ikea's closed), you can head down one block down to this place to try it out. :-)

ieat Makan Session at Joe's Kitchen @ Bukit Merah

Last nite, some 45 gluttons met in a HDB shoplot restaurant called Joe's Kitchen. It was a makan session organised by ieatishootipost.sg It was like a dégustation menu or sorts. Usually dégustation menus are not filling, where you slowly and carefully taste and appreciate various food.

This one was truly for makan kakis. Food was flowing out of an overworked kitchen. (that even caused a momentary power failure.) The chef's Joe from a Esarn and married Jamie from Singapore. Joe's previously from Parkway Thai.

The feasting started with this spicy peanut paste. My taste buds are not that good to pick out exact ingredients in it.

You eat it with rice crackers with this 'ayam brand tuna paste' look-alike and taste-alike thingy. It was yummy by the way.

Next was this golden nuggets of prawns.

If you are wondering how it looks inside. Here you go...

Next this pretty little container was brought out.

In it was glutinous rice, extra sticky!

The rice is to go with this Thai Papaya salad.

The rice is to go with this Thai BBQ Chicken.

Wait, the rice's to go with this Pork Neck. Thai Char Siu. ;-)

What else did we eat? Stay tuned tomorrow.
If you can't wait, you can visit EastCoastLife's blog to see her review. I have not seen her for about a year I think! You get to see the Chef's photo too on her blog.

Beef Stew Noodles, Vietnamese Stall @ NUS Business Canteen

A quick lunch over at the NUS Business Canteen. It was a Tuesday and this was the special that is available on Tuesdays only.

It was very tasty and the beef was tender and was generous too. Looks clear, but it is spicy! Yum! $2.50

With Singapore's inflation hitting 6.7% last month, we got to thank food vendors like this who still maintained their prices and continue to give us delicious food.

Realized a few stalls that I frequently visit has raised their prices. Sigh...

Birthday Celebration @ Peaberry and Pretzel, Sunset Way.

Happy Birthday to our dear cousin! It's our cousin's birthday today. But we all celebrated it last Sunday so that other cousins can make it too.

Today's also her last paper for the week before other papers starts again after a one week break.

We went to Sunset Way for diner and yes, we tried Yum Yum Thai again. But we sat in the open air and it is too dark to take any photos. We repeated what we did the previous week and came over to Peaberry and Pretzel to have our cake and dessert.

This is her birthday cake. You can see from the candles how old she is. PSLE exams at the end of the year, so you know lah... I think her mum is more stress about the PSLE than the daughter!

All the photos are grainy because of the poor lighting condition. Or you can blame it on me. :-)
This is the Carrot Cheese Cake that was on the counter display. It's freshly baked less than 2 hours ago when we ordered it.

It's a medium size cake and I think it's just the nice size. Everyone took a slice like this and it is just nice. What we like about it is it is moist inside and it does not have those usual icing on it. The top is cheese. It is just so so yummy!

The person taking our order said that they have the best souffle around. So we ordered one. We had the souffle with rum. $12

When you order it, it takes around 15 mins to prepare. Yes, you can see the chef separate the eggs, beat it up, etc... the whole process if you want. It's made fresh and right in front of you.

Does it tempt you?

The ice cream and white choc goes well with it!

We also had the Hot Apple and Rhubarb Crumble. $10
It is also very interesting. If you like the sour Rhubarb you will like this.

It's the weekend! Have yourself a well rested and enjoyable weekend!

Sis and I think in future, we shall get birthday cakes from here. The size is small enough. It seems people nowadays only take a tiny slice anyway. Also the price of it, at $16 is quite ok, comparable to other cakes outside.

You can visit their website for more interesting menu. We have yet to try the 'food' part. We have only been dessert-ing here. LOL

Streets Cafe @ Bukit Panjang Plaza

Last Sunday, I was back at Bukit Panjang. Yes, for the 3rd straight week! Anyway, this week's lunch is at this 'yellowish' looking place, a HK Style Cafe called Streets Cafe.

The last time I was at a HK Cafe, I ordered curry. Hmm I ordered curry again at this HK Cafe! Looks like only curry with nothing in it?

It looks empty because it was a deep bowl and there was lots of yummy curry. LOL. I had to use the fork and spoon to dig up the contents. This plain looking curry is the yummiest of all the food we ordered. My sis says it has the 'malay curry' style.

Yes, another dish that allows you to wallop up all your rice.

Uncle had the beef noodle. The beef is very tender and he enjoyed it.

Bro had Sze Chuan Rice. It looks like 'dao you kuay' to me right?
It's something I have not had for a long long time. Must ask mum to cook it for us!

Sis had the Portuguese Stone Rice.
Guess what? The big bowl of curry found itself into this rice too. LOL

Aunt had the wanton noodles that had big wantons!
Sounds a bit unorthodox, but putting the yummy curry over this was tasty! hehe..

When we were paying, we realise Citibank had a 10% for the food items. Yey....

Food for thought:
In your daily speech, do people believe what you say? Is your 'yes' and 'yes' and your 'no' a 'no'?

Do you use phrases like 'seriously...', 'believe me...', 'really...' , 'you must trust me on this' way too often? It might sound that you are trying very hard to convince others that you are speaking the truth. Hmmm... Does that means that other times you are lying?

Today's food for thought brought to you by Matt 5:37

Desserts - Coffee Club @ Holland Village

Hmmm... Are both Momo and Crunchasarus Rex frequent diners at Coffee Club? They guess it correctly what desserts we had.

This is the Fruity Tiramisu. Something sweet and sourish as well.

This Chocolate Delice is very absolutely yummy! It's so chocolatey!
It is even yummier if you mix 1 scoop of it with the Muddy Mud Pie.

Guess what? We were all doing silly billy things. Posing with the food and I don't have photo of it without our silly poses.

Ya, that is my colleague's mouth. Chop off the top, so that he wont be identified. :-)

Do you all do silly photo poses like we do? We do that quite often. No, you don't get to see it here. :-)

Birthday Lunch : Coffee Club @ Holland Village

A very Happy Birthday to our colleague, Ms Preggie. (that's an alias she gives herself in English, the chinese version is 'da du por')

To celebrate it, 8 of us who was in office went to Holland Village to have lunch. It was a pity for those who could not make it. I guess they can give her a separate treat :-)

Ms Preggie has suggested we go to Coffee Club. As it was not 1 pm, the upstairs that is bright and sunny is not opened, so we sat downstairs. It has been some time since we were here, and we realised that the menu has changed. (sad to say, also the pricing).

The 8 of us shared two starters. The Calamari Rings.
It sure is better than the ring rings on our office phones the whole day, which we think is a suffering. :-)

We also had the Spice Chicken Wings.

DP has something called "really huge chicken sandwich". It sure is big. High in calories, but he doesn't care. He is one who gets the best rating for his medical report among us.

SI had 'Gobble & Oink' sandwich. Ya you can guess what it is. Turkey and Crisp Bacon.

Was it sandwich / burger day? WY and I, both ordered the "Coffee Club Burger" each. I had the one with an egg. The beef patty is big. This thing really fills you up. The wedges fills you up more!

Ms Preggie had Beef Daube. She says it is nice, but a tad generous on the salt.
Sorry for the a bit blur photo. I realise when my food comes, the next photo that follows always get blur. LOL...

The 2 network guys in our team had the same thing. Hmmm is it an occupation hazard I wonder. They ordered pasta, doesn't it look like network cables? hahah...

Looks good ya?

ET our colleague from another building joined us too. He had the Chicken and Zucchini Baked Rice. His dish came last but he finished his food first. Is it really so good? :-)

Clever readers like you should know. What do we usually eat at Coffee Club? It's something we always have without fail. Too many photos today, shall post it tomorrow.

Tiramisu @ Kev & Pris

After the dinner yesterday, we went to Kev & Pris for dessert. Sounds like a dessert place ya? Maybe Kev & Pris can really open up a tiramisu place. :-)

The container of home made tiramisu, truly made from the heart.

The layers of it... Pris is the dessert queen, so you can't expect anything less than yummy.

A half slice of it. Kev & Pris added cognac to it.

This is the recipe that they used. It is delicious. Their Kenwood Mixer broke down and Kev had to hand whisk it! Maybe that's why it tasted better.

Tiramisu Recipe

1) 500g Mascarpone Cheese
2) 5 egg whites
3) 100g sugar
4) A pinch of salt
5) Sponge biscuits

Cafe Cartel @ IMM

Yesterday, we had our Melb friends monthly meet up again. Only 5 adults turned up this month compared to sometimes 18 over in certain months. Some had to do RT, some went for holidays, others had to rest more because the baby is coming out anytime! With fewer people, we had a very cosy dinner.

We met in the West this time because we were going to someone's house in the 'westest west of Singapore' (sorry for the silly English, but I am sure you can know what I mean) for their homemade tiramisu for supper! (yum yum!)

Everyone knows Cafe Cartel serves bread. Kids are all the same! 3 kids that was with us only ate the middle part of the bread! The crust was all passed to their mummies, but the mummies dont want to eat them, so the daddies had to eat them. (If you are a parent, are you the bread crust person too? haha...)

We were in a mood for their St Louis Pork Ribs, and guess what?
We ordered 5 sets of it!

The 2nd plate of it. I think I shall not show you the next 3 plates. :-)

We also had a starter salad.

OK, this is a rare picture. We get messy when we eat!

The ribs are delicious, but you get 'jelak' eating too much of it. We should have ordered maybe 3 sets of it instead and ordered other things ;-)

Hope you weekend had been great!

McCafe @ Great World City

After the Nasi Padang lunch yesterday, we j-walked Zion Road (haha...) to cross over to Great World City. We wanted to look for a place for some drinks.

We wanted to go to TCC, but found that it to be under renovation. Next choice was Coffee Bean. It was full and it was mostly 1 person tables. We had 4 people, so we can't share tables anyway. Spinelli was also crowded, so we settled for McCafe.

We made the right choice!

A colleague had a hot chocolate. Yes, it comes with marshmallows too :-)

We also had two slices of cake to share. This chocolate cake is quite nice. Chocolatey, moist and warm. (it was heated for us :-) )

There was also Oreo Cheesecake (with a cute mini oreo above).

The other 3 of us, we had 3 cold drinks. Don't the drinks look so colourful and tempting?
Mango, Vanilla and Chocolate. Hey, if you do a blind test, you might think it's from the "more expensive brands" mentioned earlier.

I mentioned it was a right choice right? You know why? McCafe has such good service!

Halfway through our drinks and cakes, (shall I call her a McCafe Barista,) walked over to us with 4 cups of water. She said, you have ordered some cakes, and your drinks are sweet too. These few cups of water might be what you need.

Wow!!! We were so so impressed! Well done McDonalds!

Not sure if other tables got served, we were served and they just got themselves 4 more repeat customers! Makes us wonder if the other branches of McCafe has staff that is so passionate about their work and customers.

Nasi Padang River Valley @ Zion Road

Earlier today, colleagues and I, we were thinking about what to have for lunch. It's only 4 person today, so it's just a nice number to hop into a cab and go somewhere further. We had a few choices, but ended up at Zion Road.

As a colleague said, it has been TOO LONG since we drop by this place.

We were already thinking about this rendang while on the cab! We always order this. We a bit kiasu, we ordered 4 pieces today. LOL. While other people had a small plate, we had this bigger plate of rendang.

Beef Rendang = Rendang Daging Lembu.

We also had the brinjals.

Brinjals = Terung

We also like this Ladies Fingers. The sauce is those that makes you wanna lick your plate! Just like the brinjals above. haha..

Ladies Fingers = Kacang Bendi

We also had the 'red chicken' this time. We realised that this dish is nicer than what we remembered. I think the recipe for the sauce has been tweaked a bit :-)

Red Chicken = Ayam Masak Merah

Added the malay terms of the food above, so when you order, you can order it in Malay if you want. :-)

Colleagues always ask for this. Spice up your life with sambal belachan!

The kind folks always provide us with sauces. Today it is this curry sauce that has a hint of sourness that really makes you wallop all your rice and ask for more!

We were very happy people today. Yummy lunch.
While many places have cut corners etc, we always feel satisfied with the food when we eat here.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Villa Bali @ Lock Road, Gillman Village

Yesterday, my care group friends and I, we went for dinner at somewhere different. Someone suggest Villa Bali, so off we went.

Never been there before, and the place looks very 'bali' indeed. There are 'huts' where you can dine. You can choose between the more usual table and chairs, or you can choose 'to sit and cross your legs kind' with a low table.

We chose the normal table and chairs kind.

What did we eat? Since it was nearly 745 pm, and we were so hungry, the 4 of us decided we shall eat first. So, we ordered the "Balinese Dinner Platter" $60.

It came on a bit platter like what you see here. There's chicken sambal, sate lilit, fish pepes, lawar kacang, bergedel, sambal eggplant, chicken curry, beef rendang, chicken sate and bali rice.

The place is too dim so I had to use flash. LOL. It has been some time since I used the flash on my camera! The food's quite tasty.

Then at nearly 9 pm, another person finished work and is joining us. Another can't make it. So with one more coming, and we were still hungry, we ordered another set.

This is the Thai Set, the smaller set at $40.
There's fried rice, soft shell crab, mango salad, fish pieces, mince beef, prawns and roast chicken. We actually find this nicer.

We were quite happy about this place except for something. When we asked for a refill of cold water, guess what they said? "We only have 1 serving of cold water". WHAT??!!

I guess this place is a place where people come here for drinks. Maybe that's why they have such a silly billy rule. Of course, you pay $4.50 for the 300ml of imported water, which someone in our group did. (thirsty what... what to do? LOL)

An interesting thought to put to you if you are one of those who likes to drink 'imported' water.

Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe @ Anchorpoint

On Sunday night, we needed to get something from Ikea, so we thought we would have dinner at Ikea as well. When we got there, we realize that Ikea at Alexandra is under renovation. The restaurant's closed!

So, we crossed the overhead bridge to get to Anchorpoint. Bad timing, everywhere's so packed! The food court's so packed, even KFC has no seats. Not really interested in other food, so we walked into Xin Wang just beside KFC. We got ushered to an empty table.

Bro has noodles. Very instant noodles right? That's my impression of HK Cafe noodles, and this reinforces it. LOL

Sis had chicken chop with rice instead. An egg is hidden below the chicken.

For me? I had Pork Curry. The curry looks sinful ya? It is! LOL. But it was nice. Sis had this curry over her rice too.

The rice came with achar. Hmmm, looks very fusion eh?

Missing the Ikea chicken wings etc, and no way I am traveling all the way to the Tampines branch to eat it. I shall wait....

Bi Feng Tang @ Bukit Panjang Plaza

Last Sunday, (or two days ago), I was back at Bukit Panjang Plaza. Guess what? We went back to the same place to eat!

Here's what we ate, this is Pear soup with Ginseng frills. The soup's nice except soups like these, you can't eat the meat ;-)

We also shared the the water cress soup.

What we ate this week's a bit different from last week. This fish is quite nice. It's stir fried fish with ginger. I love the ginger slices.

This is also yummy. Pineapple pork ribs. I had a few extra pieces of it. :-p
The pineapple used are canned ones though.

OK, this is the same as last week's. It's cousin's favourite. She can eat more than half of the chicken.

This is the soup / veg dish. It's the veg with 3 eggs thingy. Yes, they have it here as well. The egg white covers it like melting snow? haha...

Another satisfied lunch. Hope you have had enough food to struggle through a hectic week.

Update (10 Sept 09) :
I was just notified that they no longer operate the Bukit Panjang Plaza branch. They are still at Wisma Atria and Century Square.

Peaberry & Pretzel @ Sunset Way

Call us gluttons. (I am sure you are one too!). After the Thai Food we had, we went for desserts elsewhere. This shop looks inviting enough, and the 5 of us decided to go in.

Momo, did some mental calculation and decided there's enough time for the caffeine to wear off, so she ordered the Affogato. ($7) 2 shots leh! I wonder if she could sleep after that. hehe..

The ice cream melting in espresso looks good eh... Smelt good too!

Our friend had the Peaberry & Pretzel Sundae. ($10) Looks yummy?

Yes, it is definitely yummy! It's either 2 or 3 scoop of ice cream there! With the topping and fruits.

For me, I had the Choc Overload. ($10).
The top part right under the raspberry is a dollop of moose that is soaked in rum. Below that is 2 big scoops of ice cream and right below the cup, it's some kind of choc chip crispies thingy.

Chocolate lovers will love it! I am sure you sweet tooth people will like this as well.

Bro had the Warm Chocolate Pudding ($12).

It has a hard crust and very wobbly too. You see the cup of white chocolate beside it?

You poured it inside the warm chocolate pudding. Bro sure enjoyed it.
The family beside us saw what we ordered, and ordered one too! haha... (refer to the first photo, when we left, they were still eating it. think their kids loved it!)

It also came with a scoop of yummy ice cream. The tiny piece of biscuit below it, I 'curi' a bit to eat. Delicious with the ice cream!

Sis and Momo, ya, they 'curi' here and there, all our desserts. haha...

Nice place to have desserts. We saw quite a few other things that we want to try.
We will be back!

Yum Yum Thai @ Sunset Way

Last night (Sat night), we were suppose to meet a group of friends for dinner, but I guess we have to abandon them when our brother arrived into Singapore later than expected. His estimated arrival time is the same time as dinner time all the way in the east. No way we will be on time. So told them earlier in the day can't make it.

We changed plans to join sis who was meeting another friend from Melbourne for dinner instead. He's been working here for a year, and we only met him like less than 5 times. We had planned to go to Central for Japanese food.

Guess what, we changed plans again. (3 change of plans in a day!) We headed to Yum Yum Thai at Sunset Way instead, where sis had dinner few days earlier and thought that we should try it too.

So, what did we have? There was a 'this week's special' board and we decided to order all the 4 main dishes listed on it! We asked for recommendation and was told those listed on the board is what people come specially to eat. On! We took all of it. (We had 5 people today, so with more people, we can try more stuff hehe..)

The fried stuff chicken wings. The stuffing was very compact and it was nice.

This is the crispy bean curd with thai sweet chilli.

This is the Steamed Seafood. (Fish Head, Prawn, Squid, Mussel). This is superbly good! The fish is very fresh, totally no 'fishy smell'. The soup is spicy tomyam that gushes through your head. It looks clear, but it is really potent. We loved this dish the most for the night.
The rest of the seafood is behind, hidden, if you are wondering ;-)

This is the 4th of the Weekly Special. Fried Seafood Tanghoon. It goes really well with the spicy (not the sweet) thai chilli they gave us.

In addition to that, we also had "fan su ye" / Sweet Potato leaves.

We also had Olive Rice. We enjoyed this very much too.

Not forgetting the pomelo salad.

It was a very satisfying meal indeed. We think we might go back for the fish again. Just the fish would makes us happy people. haha..

Total bill for the night was $92.10. Steamed Seafood dish costing $25.

Crystal Jade Kitchen @ Holland Village

Momo, sis and I decided to have dinner at Holland Village last night. Wondering what to eat, we walked around and after looking around decided that Chinese Food is still our favourite!

Surprisingly, Crystal Jade is not very pack on a Friday night, and we could easily get a seat, after waiting for like 10 seconds.

What did we order? Same old thing! Somehow we like to eat what we always eat. So what did we eat? We shared a bowl of 'xi yang cai tang' / Water Crest Pork Rib Soup.

We also had garlic pork ribs. This dish takes time to prepare according to the lady taking our orders, so she quickly went to the kitchen to place the order first, before coming back to us to order other things. Such considerate people. :-) It seems a bit pale today, but it still taste ok.

We had Claypot tofu as well.

Also, what we usually order when we are here. The 3 eggs with veg dish.

How many of you like Chinese food the best? Do you also always tend to order the same thing when you eat at the same place? :-)

Mixed Rice @ K Gourmet Cafe, PGP

Colleagues and I went to the K Gourmet Cafe at the NUS PGP Residences for lunch. It seems they now have a bain marie that serves "mixed rice".

A few of us had the 'mixed rice' while others ordered the 'zhi char' noodles.

This is my mixed rice for today. 1 Meat, 1 Tofu and 1 Egg dish. The portions are quite big! $3 for lunch today.

Those who ordered the 'zhi char' thingy, their lunch had not arrived after the 'mixed rice' people finished their lunch. LOL.

So, I had "Last Man Standing" $2. Yummy.

Have a good weekend!

Vietnamese @ NUS Business Canteen

This was lunch last week at the Business Canteen at NUS. I read from the baker who cooks that she likes the food here too!

This is the Phở that I had. It's very simple and nice dish. One thing I like about Vietnamese dishes is the fresh herbs that they put on top.

Phở is pronounced to sound like 'fur'. Yes I had problem trying to pronounce it too previously.

The Vietnamese stall at the Business Canteen serves different specials daily! You see lots of Vietnamese students buying food here, so I guess it's one of the best around. It's cheap too. Only $2.50.

I have not visited Vietnam, so I am not sure how Phở taste there. But many of my friends and I, we miss the Phở in Melbourne! Right in Swanston Street there's a Viet place that served delicious Vietnamese food, and not forgetting the suburb of Richmond and Springvale. Anyone here love the Vietnamese food in Melbourne? :-)

Wantan Noodles @ Amoy Street Food Centre

This stall is a stall I frequently eat on Tuesdays / Thursdays for the last few years. Friends and I eat here because we all attend the same Bible study that is hosted at the church right opposite. We seems to be always rushing and this is one of the 'fast food' available.

This is what I usually have. (No, it's not on the menu on the board.) It's Wanton Hor Fun. Yes, I like anything kuey teow or hor fun. (or even phở haha).

The uncle is quite generous with the meat, mushroom and veg. I always put on lots of chilli on it. Yum Yum... Very satisfying as it leaves a spicy taste and feeling on your lips. LOL.

It comes with 5 wantons in the soup. Depends on the uncle's mood, sometimes the wanton's over the noodles and the soup has nothing in it.

Don't you think 'fast food' like these taste better than the 'col sanders' or 'golden arches' fast food? hehe..

It's at Stall 01-31, Amoy Street Food Centre.

Nasi Padang @ NUH Staff Canteen

For lunch today, colleagues and I ate at the NUH Staff Canteen, we heard that the Malay Stall has changed operators. So with great kepo-sity, we went there to try it out.

The previous stall operators were generous but their portions, but their food tends to be a bit sweetish side.

This new stall operator is still generous. Food is not as sweet, so it is better. We also like their selection of 'lauk'. It looks like there is 50% more variety than the previous operator. The signs are still the same, except that they 'tampal' a new menu and price list over the old one. haha..

Three of us ate at this stall, but only took 2 photos because we were already busy eating after that. LOL

Ms Preggie had this. Guess how much? 3 veg, 1 meat for $3.

I had this. Looks a bit messy but that's Nasi Padang. I had bitter gourd, a slice of asam fish and sambal goreng. Also $3. Think fish is more expensive. But still quite a good price.

The kuah for the asam fish is very very pedas! Truly sedap dan enak. The sambal goreng has generous servings of tempeh too and not so oily.

We also tapow some pisang goreng from this stall. 4 pieces for $1. It was quite nice too. Not a lot of flour but just covering the pisang that is about ripe.

Boleh tahan lah. We will come back for more in the future.

-----

Since it is Malay food and there's banana fritters, let me correct some of you. I remember my Malay language teacher in primary school corrected us and I still remember it. Banana Fritters are called "Pisang Goreng". You eat 'pisang goreng' and not 'goreng pisang'. Goreng Pisang is the act of frying the banana.

Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie @ Paragon

Momo and Dino has been going for desserts. This is what they had recently. Hmm. All these desserts photo that is sent to my mailbox is making me drool. LOL.. I want some too! They had dinner in Paragon and pop by Canele in the same place to have some sweet stuff.

This beautiful looking creation is Tarte Citron ($5.50)
It has a very lemony taste and is very refreshing.

Baked Fruit Tarts ($5.50) A big delicious slice of it too. This place has unique teas too.

Have a good start to the week!
Are you a sweet tooth person as well?

Bi Feng Tang @ Bukit Panjang Plaza

Today, it's my first venture into Bukit Panjang Plaza! Aunt brought us to eat at this place that she kinda like. She has been here because our cousin's tuition is at a teacher's house in this area. Yes, parents will go all the way to any part of this island as long as there's a good teacher ;-)

A few weeks ago, aunt bought this and invited us over for dinner. It was quite delicious and had a promo of a soy chicken for only $9 for a whole bird. It seems that during CNY, you would have people queue for it from 3pm though they only start at 6 pm! (siao ah!)

One of the reasons we pop by here is because our cousin likes this chicken. Aunt said that you should come with a few more persons and order half a chicken. Individual portions are a bit too small. ;-)

We also had deep fried beans with mince. The mince is a mix of mince pork and salted fish. We picked that out after nibbling on the bits after all the greens were gone. ;-)

The 'ngao lam' dish. We wanted more tendons but I think they prefer to serve people more meat. lol. Dish so so lah...

We also had this Sambal Seafood Tofu. This is a fiery dish! Very very pedas!

It's at #02-31/32, Bukit Panjang Plaza if you are wondering where it is. Think they also have a 3 other branches around Singapore.

Hope you all have had a good weekend. It's another new week tomorrow and may you have a good start for the week!

Update (10 Sept 09) :
I was just notified that they no longer operate the Bukit Panjang Plaza branch. They are still at Wisma Atria and Century Square.

Ya Kwang Dai Pai Dong @ 709 Geylang Road

Today, my sis and I had lunch with Camemberu and Southernoise at Ya Kwang. It was good to see Southernoise after like 12 years! and finally got to meet Camemberu & Nadine.

We had arranged this lunch a long time ago just to try the Crab Bee Hoon. But alas, the flight that brought the crabs got delayed or something like that and there was no crabs for us today.

No crabs? No worries, as there's other things to eat.

This is the 'clam noodles' (or you can call it al dente 'vongole pasta' chinese style. It's 'lala ban mian ala western style', which taste very good. We had wanted to eat the 'lala' alone, but was recommended by Jason (the owner) that you should eat it with the noodles. We ordered a double portion of clams with 1 portion of noodles to try. The gravy there is yummilicious!

We also had this veg dish with mushrooms. The mushroom goes very well with this veg with a bitter tip. It was fried with lots of garlic and it was yummy for a garlic fan like me ;-)

People who comes here will always try this. The rib-eye terriyaki.
It looks a bit different this time compared to the last time I was here, but it was still good.

We had Char Kuey Teow as well. I am a CKT fan, so I will just eat it whenever I see it, done any style. This is the Penang Style CKT.

We got to try the Salmon Head Steamed Hong Kong style. It was recommended by Jason. OK lah. It was nice but I think my sis who don't like fish with fishy smell did not really touch it. LOL. All on the table thinks Salmon should only be eaten as sashimi. (or grilled).

We also had fried chicken wings. Somehow, I did not have the picture in my camera, and I think camemberu did not have it as well. LOL. Why ah? Too busy eating and playing with Nadine lor.

We were joined by ieat and family who said he might pop by. He did. It was interesting to see ieat & Jason experimenting new dishes on the fly, next thing you know, something new appears on the table! Next time you are there, you might want to try the "Teriyaki Beef Hor Fun" that was concocted today. (Beef strips with yummy caramelized onions on hor fun.)

Want to know how much it cost? Or what's on special? Just take a look at the prices here ;-)

We still have not tried the Crab Bee Hoon, so maybe we might be back again!

Food's taste good and value for money. You can pop by 709 Geylang Road (Lor 37) between
11am to 11pm daily. If you want certain special orders, call them at 9817-0006

Photos of my previous trip here with colleagues.
You can pop over to Camemberu to check out the stories too.

Gelare Birthday Cake

Momo and her colleagues had a birthday celebration in her office. I saw these few photos in my mailbox, and I got hungry!

They look so good don't they?

I did not ask, but I guess it must be a birthday girl!. Or either that people got the cake not because of the birthday person, but they all want to eat it themselves. LOL.

This is the yummiest part of the cake! The ice cream, it's Macadamia Nut.

I want some of that! I am so tempted. haha...

Update: I asked momo how much it cost. (I know many of you will ask too.)
$38 for a 5 inch cake.

Vietnamese @ Business Canteen, NUS

Today with the same colleagues that had lunch with me yesterday, we ventured into another NUS Canteen.

We went to the less crowded canteen. We think this less crowded canteen has more yummy food! I had the rice from the Vietnamese stall. You can always see lots of Vietnamese students buying from this stall. Me too. LOL.

The way they cook the meat dishes are different from the normal 'chinese' chap chai peng. They really use lots of aromatics like ginger, lemon grass, fish sauce, etc.. in the cooking. It somehow taste really good and fragrant.

You know for most stores, you order 2 veg and 1 meat and it comes quite pathetic in portion, but this stall gives quite generous portions. People who orders from here usually only have 1 veg and 1 meat. The veg portion is big. It is $2 usually.

What I had above was 2 meat instead. I ordered the cabbage and lemon grass chicken. $2. Then i felt like having their stuff toufu. $1 extra.

Yong Tau Foo @ The Deck (Arts Canteen, NUS)

We have been eating slightly costlier food, so it's back to cheaper eats.

I had lunch with colleagues from different buildings at my workplace today. We met for lunch at The Deck, more commonly known as the NUS Arts Canteen.

Looks like since the last time I was here, this stall has won another award! Apparently, it's the best stall in this canteen.

I picked 8 items, and it seems when I eat YTF, I always pick the same things! I always have a tomato!

You have to queue twice. The first queue, you pick the ingredients and pass this bowl to the lady at the counter.

You then go to the next queue and wait and inch forward slowly. After around 5 minutes or less, tada! Today's lunch. I had the dry version. You pour the sweet sauce or/and chilli sauce over the YTF according to your taste.

Satisfying. I had a tad too much sweet sauce over it. LOL...

Tuckshop @ 21 Tanjong Pagar Road

Let's meet at the Tuckshop for lunch today. No, not at the tuckshop in school, but a Shoplot at Tanjong Pagar Road. A colleague had emailed us a few links to pick for lunch. We like what we saw, and off we went.

If the outside does not look tuckshop-py, maybe the looks inside will look more tuckshop. :-)

We had 8 of us today for lunch. 4 arrived earlier so we ordered some onion rings to munch while we waited. It came just in time when the other 4 walked in. So 'ngam ngam'. They got to eat it too! haha...

What did we have? 2 of us had the Fish & Chips. $9.50
It was a big piece of fish! It's suppose to be a higher grade of fish too according to ieatishootipost.

1 colleague had the Steak Sandwich $13.50 that had raving review by Leslie of ieatishootipost

The piece of steak below the mushroom.

Ms Preggie had the 2 mushroom Sandwich. $7.50
She liked her sandwich especially that big portobello . She had a side dish of Caesar Salad as well.

I had the Roast Chicken Sandwich $7.50 plus nutmeg mash potato as side.

You did your math correctly, what did the other 3 have? Same thing! We had 4 Roast Chicken Sandwich. haha...

I like the sandwich, you know the first bite you take, you know you will like it.
You can visit their website (www.tuckshop.com.sg) for more info, but I think it's a bit outdated. The prices for some orders have gone up and yet to be reflected.
