Last meal of the year...

This is the last bowl of food many of us had for 2008. We were at the Watch Night service in church, and this was served to us for a break at around 10:30 PM.

It's a bowl of porridge with lots of toppings. Shredded chicken, fried anchovies, century egg, salted egg and parsley.

Thanks to the two sisters, Mrs Ang and Mrs Tan (they are really sisters whose face are so alike) who faithfully prepare this for us year after year. It's delicious!

Dim Sum Lunch - The Scholar @ NUSS Kent Ridge Guild House

It's the last working day of the year for our organisation. We don't work on the 31 Dec because the President of our organisation wants to reward all the hardworking staff with a day off. (And because of this, we work very hard for the rest of the year. Really!)

So for the last lunch for the year, we thought we will just go have something quick and fast and cost like $2-3. But one colleague, 'old cat' looked at the rest of us and gave a disapproving look, a look that shouts out "how can?".

We decided to take a bus ride to the Computing/Business School side of NUS to dine at The Scholars instead. We decided to have a 'Dian Xin' lunch. How appropriate. 'Dian Xin' means 'touch the heart' in mandarin and we are closing the year with a 'touch the heart' lunch with colleagues.

We had a century egg congee, $3 which was nice. (But the photo was not, so not showing it here. :-))

Then came the Fried Carrot Cake. $4 This version looks so crispy right? Soft in the inside and crispy in the inside.

Fried Carrot Cake

Next was two steamers of Har Gow. $4 for each steamer. Each one was packed with prawns. It was like 3 prawns in each!

Har Gow

The two steamers of Siew Mai that came next was also good. $4 each steamer.
It did not have a strong meaty smell, and the combi of pork and prawns was nice. It's huge too.

Siew Mai

Next to arrive was the Char Siu Chee Cheong Fun. $4
This Chee Cheong Fun was overflowing with Char Siu! Not some stingy a few pieces ones.

Roast Meat Chee Cheong Fun

As usual, we always order the Phoenix Claws. $4.
These chicken feet's well marinated.

Phoenix Claws

To top it off, we had half a roast duck. $22. The duck's not too bad.
We were also eye-ing the next table which had Peking Duck. LOL...

Half a roast duck

It was a heart warming lunch. Thanks to "old cat" who decided to treat us too.

Wedding Lunch @ Mandarin Oriental Singapore

Yesterday, we were invited to our friend, G's wedding lunch reception at Mandarin Oriental Singapore. G looked absolutely stunning in her wedding gowns.

G must be on of the most organised person around. We got sms to remind us before the wedding two times over two weeks. We also got a thank you sms today too!

So, what was on the menu?

The lunch started off with the Mandarin Oriental Combination - Lobster and Prawn with Seafood Roll. Looks good?

The braised shark's fin with crabmeat.
Good thing that not many sharks were killed. :-)

The Cod Fish Fillets. Baked fillets of cod in superior teriyaki sauce
We all like the cod. So soft and it melts in your mouth.

When we saw on the menu: Chilli Crab Mantous, we all asked each other, is it going to be the chilli crab that we know? Haha...

Well, it is! This is the chilli crab sauce! Is there crab meat inside? Yes!

Chilli Crab Sauce - Easiest way to eat chilli crabs!

The Man tou - Fried Mini buns. Golden brown and its calling out to us to eat them.

Fried Man Tou - Crispy Mini Buns

When we were served our individual portions, we can't wait to try it!
This must be the easiest way to eat Chilli Crabs! Look, there's lots of crab meat too. We were impressed!

With the previous dish bringing our hopes so high, errr, this next dish looks ugly. haha..
Orh Nee - Sweetened Yam Paste with gingko nuts.

It was a good time catching up with friends and meeting new friends over the lunch table.
G if you are viewing these photos, it was a really well organised lunch. Congratulations to both you and CE!

Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Upper Bukit Timah Road

We had relatives visiting Singapore and we met them for dinner. Aunt asked what they would like to eat, and they said: "the chicken rice that we had the last time we were here".

Looks like chicken rice in Singapore leaves a deep impression to visitors!

So, the whole 'clan' went to the chicken rice place that our aunt brought them the last time they were here, the Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice shop.

Here's what we had:

The boneless 'white' chicken. We like their chicken here because it has less fat, yet the meat's still tender and juicy. (I think the chicken's kampung chicken if I remembered correctly)

The delicious Chicken

Our 'clan' this time had 12 adults and 1 teenager. To feed the this clan, 4 plates of chicken was ordered. LOL

The 4 plates of Chicken

Enough to feed the clan? Of course not. We had doubles of the following dishes.
The chicken feet salad.

(We learn a new term for it. Our relos call it the 'white tyres'. LOL..)

Chicken Feet

The sweet and sour pork.

Sweet and Sour Pork

The spicy version of the Fan Su Ye.

Spicy Fan Su Ye

For the spicy-challenged, the no-sambal version of Fan Su Ye.

Fan Su Ye

For the fried food lovers, the Stuffed Fried You Tiao.

Stuffed You Tiao

Finally, the stuff that I did not touch, the chicken gizzard.

Chicken Gizzard

Someone from the 'clan' is a future-in-law. He followed his girlfriend down to Singapore for a holiday. He's from Ipoh and we asked him how's the chicken rice here?

He said, "Well, almost there lah..." LOL...

Mega McSpicy, Cornetto Chocolate Mcflurry @ Mcdonalds

While everyone's out squeezing themselves in the shopping malls, the people in our household were sleeping till past 12 noon! We sleep quite a lot, our friends know about it. :-)

After waking up late, we thought we would clean up the house. But we ended up watching "Monks Marathon" on TV! (plus eating Curry Puffs we bought for tea) We were very glued to TV that we did not clean up the house. Before we knew it, it was 8 pm!

Wondering what to eat, bro said "let's go try the Mega stuff at McDonalds". He wanted to try it for some time, but never stepped into McDs. So we walked to the nearest McDonalds and had our Mega McSpicies. Bro and I had the double deck spicy chicken burger - the Mega McSpicy. Sis did not fancy it and had the Filet-O-Fish.

The McSpicy was quite big!

Mega McSpicy

We had the set meals that came with packs of fries. Bro is a Carl's Jr fries fan, so he was 'complaining'. But we still ate it. :-p

Fries

I was tempted by the big signs alluring me to try the new Cornetto Chocolate Mcflurry!
Yielded to temptation. sigh..

Cornetto Chocolate Mcflurry

Very very chocolaty. But it melts very quickly.

The Hot Sauce Store @ Suntec City

A very Blessed Christmas to all!

Buying presents is one of the toughest thing for me. I find it very difficult to find the correct presents for people. But sis and I found this for our brother. He loves chilli sauce.

We saw this Hot Sauce Store at Suntec City (in front of Carrefour) and thought this will be the perfect gift for him.

The Hot Sauce Store at Suntec City

Of all the different sauces, we bought him this because our brother's name is on it! :-)

This was what we bought for my brother for his Christmas gift.

Christmas Dinner @ Uncle and Aunt's

This is our family's Christmas Dinner that we had on Monday night. Monday nights? Yes, our dinners are scheduled around our Church activities. There's rehearsals and the actual Christmas Eve services that most of us are involved in.

Our relatives from Malaysia could not join us this year due to the clash of activities in their church as well. LOL. The little ones were a bit disappointed that there were fewer kids around to make noise.

Here's the turkey that aunt baked. For the last few years, it has always been freshly baked turkey and no more ordering from turkeys from shops that baked them the day before.

Annie's Turkey

The baked whole salmon, with teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds.

The broccoli. We look at this and called it "Ikea Style" broccoli. lol

After dinner, we had an assortment of fruits. The kids had them with a chocolate fondue.
If you are wondering, no that's really 2 plates and not mirror image. haha..

Fresh Fruits after dinner

Plus a hazelnut log cake from Bengawan Solo.

Log cake from Bengawan Solo

It was a fabulous dinner. The above food were prepared by a few people, but bulk of it by aunt.

If you realize some photos are yellowish other more whitish, that's because some were taken at the dinner table, while some in the kitchen. :-)

We were all busy getting the food ready, so the ones that we missed taking in the kitchen, we had to take it at the dining table which had the warmer lights.

Have a Blessed Christmas.

Ikoi @ Miramar Hotel

Been meeting up with many groups of friends these two weeks. Oh well, catching up with friends over meals are always very heartwarming and tummy-warming too. :-p

This was a group who liked Japanese Food. I am so shocked that skinny ladies can eat so so so much! The way they can order sashimi is just amazing! Ladies eat so gently and gracefully that you can't imagine it's them that finished most of the food below....

Ikoi @ Miramar Hotel

When we got seated, we were served this Salmon Sashimi.
It's to be eaten without adding anything else. It's delicious!

Salmon Starter

This was one of the many many many 'boats' of sashimi that the group of 7 ate.

Sashimi Boat

Tofu...

Soft Tofu

Grilled Saba.
I always like this fish. (I know many people don't like this because of its fishy smell, but I like. LOL)

Saba

I got so many of this tofu. The deep fried tofu photos turned out so ugly, so this cold tofu will represent its cousin. LOL...

Cold Tofu

Chicken wings.
I think 5 chickens were sacrificed.

Chicken Wings

Well, the chicken did not die in vain. The meat were used to served us lots of yakitori.

Yakitori

Oh, I like fish, but I don't like salmon fish head. But Mr R seems to love this so much. He ate it all plus the other plates.

The servers served us with many complimentary dishes, and this is one of them. (ie not in the menu)

Salmon Head

I think I might be the only one who was ordering and eating salad. The ladies only go for sashimi.

Tuna Salad

Assortment of vegetable tempuras.

Assortment of Tempuras

Ebi Tempura. I think I only had one. Must watch what I eat. LOL
The ladies just ate on.... and on.... and on....

Tempura Ebi

The Teapot Soup. I always like this. But we realise a few ladies hate this. Ms Ant is one of them. For every cup of soup I had, I think she had a bowl of fried rice!

Pot Tea

Shishamo. I don't like fish eggs. I did not touch them. LOL...

Shishamo (Smelt)

Another complimentary dish. Soup was nice. Ms Ant did not touch it as well. Yeah. fishy... LOL..

Salmon Soup

Miss Ant however had lots and lots of Tako.

More Tako

I saw they had Oden and I ordered one bowl. This Japanese Yong Tau Foo is quite nice :-)

Suan Thai @ Liang Court

An email was bouncing around a few friends to meet up for dinner. After a few bounces, we settled on trying Suan Thai at the newly refurbished Liang Court.

We were tempted with the 28 diff dishes at $20.99 ++ on Mon-Thu for the Standard Menu. (There's a Budget and a Standard menu with $3 difference) We also asked if there's any difference between the dishes served if they are a-la-carte. Yes we were told. If you order a-la-carte, there's more spices and herbs in the dishes, the buffet ones they omit some of it. Hmm... anyway, we just took the buffet. :-)

Suan Thai entrance at Liang Court

We tried to try most things in the menu, maybe around 75% of it only. We had I think it was 8 of us, but we ordered things for 4 persons portion for most of it. We did not want to stuff ourselves silly.

Lighting's a bit too 'romantic', so many photos came out blur. Here's some of them.

The Green Mango Salad. Quite good.

Green Mango Salad

The Pomelo Salad.

Pomelo salad

Thai Baby Kailan with salted fish.

Some of the items on the menu had an asterisk. This meant it can only be ordered once.
This Thai Style Chicken Satay is one of the order once item.

We realised that the dishes with asterisk all taste better. But too bad, they are all 'ordred once' item. sigh...

Thai Style Chicken Satay

The soft shell crab.

Deep Fried soft shell crab

The stuff chicken wings.
One of the asterisk dishes.

Boneless stuffed Chicken Wings

Fried Tofu with Thai chilli sauce.

Deep Fried beancurd with Thai chilli sauce

Chicken Wrapped in Pandan Leaves. Also an asterisk item.

Chicken Wrapped in Pandan leaves

We had a friend who is a lala lover. We had many orders of this. LOL...

Lala with Thai Chilli Paste

The Tomyam soup's quite nice too. It was fun to meet up with this bunch of friends.

Oh, we had a surprise birthday for one of our friends. We bought a few pieces of cakes from Canele and the staff at Suan Thai was kind enough to give us candles. Happy Birthday SY!

Thai Express @ Holland Village

We gave our boss a surprise a few days ago. It was his birthday and we treated him out for lunch. We all headed to Holland Village in 2 cars and we were deciding which restaurant to go to.

We ended up at Thai Express. I think it was because someone wanted Thai Food. So the feasting begins. We decided that each will order their own main meal and we will order a few things to share.

This is the mango salad. $6.90. Always an appetizer that makes you hungrier!

Mango Salad

We wanted to have 2 mango salad, but we saw this sticker on the menu that says DBS card members get a free dish. We asked what it was and was told, it was a papaya salad. So, we swapped one mango salad to the papaya salad instead. :-)

Papaya Salad

This is the Crispy Drumlets. $13.80
Looks delicious and taste delicious too!

Drumlets

Prawn Toast. $13.80
Not a fan of deep fried toast. But colleagues who love deep fried stuff sure loved it.

Prawn on Bread

Phad Thai Beef. $10.90
This was a shared item. Boss wanted to try this as well. I personally like this.

Beef Noodle

Dpuk had the Special Fried Rice. It's suppose to be really spicy. But he said it wasn't. We think there's something wrong with his taste buds. LOL

Tomyam Fried Rice

The Phad Thai Seafood. $19.80
It looks tempting doesn't it?

Pad Thai

Almondjelly had Chye Poh Kway Teow. $9.90
But she said Chye Poh's too little. haha... But I think she mentioned it was not bad.

Pad Thai

Ex Ms Preggy had the Beef Soup. $10.90
Usually you get clear broth elsewhere, but this has dark broth and Ms Preggy says it is good.

Beef Noodle

ZS had the Softshell Crab Glassnoodles. $13.90
His dish came in a pot. How different. :-)

Softshell Crab

This dish sounds really potent. It's called Fire Noodles. $9.90
Call the fire brigade! LOL

Spicy Noodles?

This is what I had. Yellow Ginger Chicken. $9.90
When I ordered this, the order taker warned that it's very very spicy. I thought how spicy can ginger be? When it came, help! It's so so so spicy, your tongue's numb! Everyone had a try and agreed it was potent. So if you want some challenge next time, order this!

It's quite delicious if you can take the heat.

Koryo (Korean) Restaurant @ Fusionopolis

Colleagues and I were wondering what to have for lunch. We wanted to have Indian food, because two lunch buddies who don't really fancy Indian food's on leave.

We thought there's a new Khansama that's opened in Fusionopolis, but we seem to have made a mistake, so we ended up having Korean food instead.

Fusionopolis is so empty! On our way there, all the employees with their A*Star cards seems to be walking out of the building. We are the only people going in! LOL

The front of the shop

Anyway, we ordered our food and the Korean side dishes came out.
Here's the peanuts in sweetish soy sauce. It's quite delicious.

Peanuts

The cabbage kimchi.

Cabbage Kimchi

The cucumber kimchi. I like the crunchiness of it.

Cucumber Kimchi

The bean sprouts. We had refills of all the above. We finished them up before our mains came!

Bean Sprouts

"Old Cat" and the former "Ms Preggy" had the Beef Soup.
They said the soup's tasty, just a tiny bit spicy, beef's ok, but the vege inside is not nice. LOL..

Beef Soup

The rice in stainless steel bowls that came with it.

Bap

Dpuk had the Spicy Chicken Bap. Quite fragrant too.

Chicken Bap

Wire and myself, we had the Beef Bap. The beef's not too bad. I like it with the kimchi side dishes.

We find the rice floating on the soupy base quite 'interesting'. ;-)

Beef Bap

Wire wanted something spicy and fiery. So we decided to share a piping hot bowl of kimchi soup. It's sour and spicy. Nice..... Really nice....

Spicy Kimchi Soup

Not only that, there's lots of the 3-layer pork like this inside too....

The meat!

When we finished everything, they gave us this sweet soup thingy. We were all wondering what it is. Dpuk mentioned that is looks like water that you get after rinsing rice. haha...

We came back and did an online search. He's almost correct. This is ShikHye, a sweet rice drink. This is the simplest version. You can do an online search and find more elaborate versions of it.

Dessert - Shikhye

A not too bad discovery. Everything above with taxes added in was $75.33. So split it amongst the 5 of us, it was $15 each.

Think they only opened this month.

Breakfast @ Home

Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But I seldom post what I eat for breakfast. It's because it's usually muesli bars. (how boring right?)

But for yesterday and today, I had something a bit different. Sis is on some healthy diet programme, where she is eating 6 little healthy meals for a day. All her food is sodium free this whole week!!!

Since she's preparing these meals, her two brothers get to eat them too. :-)

Sodium free breakfast. Baby Spinach, Strawberries, no-oil egg, turkey pattie.
Yesterday's version.

Turkey Patty, Egg, Strawberry and Baby Spinach

This morning's version.

Turkey Patty, Egg, Strawberry and Baby Spinach

There's so many kinds of spices in the pattie that makes it smell so good. But when you put it in your mouth, something's missing! No salt! LOL... But it taste quite nice when you slowly train your tongue to taste the various spices added into it.

Maybe I will update this post with the turkey pattie recipe if anyone's interested.

Ga-Hock Seafood @ Upper Bukit Timah Road

It has been some time since our family came to Ga-Hock Seafood. It's one of the Zhi Char places that is quite 'economical', especially if you have a whole clan to feed. LOL..

This was Sunday night's dinner. If you are coming here, it's recommended that you call them and book first. The queue might be very long if you don't. It's famous for its crabs, but we were not interested in crabs that night. :-)

Here's our dinner:
A big claypot of Curry Fish Head. It's my bro and my favourite. The sauce just keeps us going. :-) That's deep fried "tau kee" (soy bean) skin above.

Curry Fish Head

The shrimp paste chicken. It's a bit overdone tonight though.

Shrimp Paste Chicken wings

The "Pai Ku Wang" / Pork Ribs King. I like this.

Pork Ribs King

Veg dish. I realise aunt's sis did not ask for lard this time. Hmm. Aunt's sis loves lard pieces and yet is so so so super skinny. (some people are born with special genes i guess)

Veggies...

One big huge omelette.
We have 4 kids around, so the above few are the not so spicy dishes for them.

Omelette

The adults enjoy their spicy veg. The sambal "Fan Su Ye". (Sweet potato leaves)

Sambal Han Zi Hio

Another dish for the adults, sambal sotong. Nicely done, not rubbery at all. :-)

Sambal Sotong

I mentioned economical. The above dishes, all quite decent sized dishes, fed 7 adults and 4 kids and it costs $87.70.

Wedding Lunch @ Shangri-la Singapore

This was a wedding lunch we had last Sunday. The bride and groom is the most 'gila' (fun loving ) people we know.

They said this is not your normal boring wedding banquet. They wanted their wedding luncheon to be as entertaining and fun possible for their friends. They did away with things that things they do not like in wedding lunch/dinners. Off goes the cake cutting and the champagne pouring.

They entertain us with live band with singers performing love songs. Their best friends and family members telling us their stories from young till now. The most entertaining was the groom's best friend telling the groom's darkest secrets. LOL

Anyway, the luncheon at Shangri-la is as follows:
We were served different kinds of bread. The following are the bread from our table.

The mini baguette. (for those with real teeth only)

Mini baguette

The brown/wholemeal(?) and healthy rolls. This actually taste quite good.

Mini hard roll

And the soft rolls. (for those who are on braces lol)

shang3

Guess what? We had two starters/appetizers. The bride and groom mentioned that during the food tasting, they like both starters that they were served and decided that all their guests can try both!

So, everyone on the table can choose one, and we are to share what we have with the persons beside you. (oh so typical of the bride and groom. lol)

This is the "Deep-fried Sesame Crusted Chicken Fillet, Mixed Nuts and Apple Salad, Hazelnut Dressing". The chicken's behind. I like the nuts and apple salad.

Deep-fried Sesame Crusted Chicken Fillet, Mixed Nuts and Apple Salad, Hazelnut Dressing

This is the other appetizer: "Tandoor-marinated Red Seabass Fillet, Avocado Mixed Salad, Citrus Dressing."

The seabass is nicely done and goes well with the Avocado Salad.

Tandoor-marinated Red Seabass Fillet, Avocado Mixed Salad, Citrus Dressing

Then came the soup. "New England Corn and Clam Chowder, Creamy Leek Stew, sprinkled with Bacon Bits." Lovely soup that goes well with more bread rolls that were being served.

New England Corn and Clam Chowder, Creamy Leek Stew, sprinkled with Bacon Bits

The main was "Chicken Teriyaki with Macaire Potatoes, Braised Endive, Assorted Mushroom Rogout." The macaire potato (twice cooked potato) is delicious. The chicken's also nicely done. I don't fancy endives though. LOL.

Christmas Log Cake from Getel

This is the second cake we had on the same night last Saturday. The second cake was from Getel. Thanks to the Joethy's for this cake.

The cakes looks different, but do you realise the plastic trees, santa, reindeer looked the same as Marriott's! The exception is the little snow man that's really cute eh?

Christmas Log Cakes from Getel

Half of us preferred this cake compared to Marriott's. We think Getel's richer in taste and also more chocolaty. I ate two slices of this. *grin*

Christmas Log Cake from Marriott Hotel

Tonight, we met up with our mates from Melbourne - a group of Malaysians/Singaporeans who studied together for Year 12/Foundation Studies and went around holidaying, cooking, hunting for food together for 3-4 years and eventually all settled here in Singapore.

Sis and I could not make it to the last two monthly makan sessions we still have. So it was good that we could meet up for the December outing. We met at the Choo's this month.

After dinner we had log cakes. Yup, plural. Not one but two of them!

The first was a cake the Wongs bought from Marriott.

Marriott Hotel Singapore Log Cake box

Look! Choo Junior is telling his mummy he wants that cake!

Marriott Hotel Singapore Log Cake

The cake's quite nice. Moist and chocolaty.

Marriott Hotel Singapore Log Cake

The next photo is the piece I ate.

Looking at the cake, sis and I suddenly remembered our hostel desserts while staying in Melbourne. We suddenly thought of Choksi, the chef that prepared our weekday food at the University Residences that we stayed in. He made wonderful cakes and desserts.

Choksi was a chef at Hilton (he told us that, we did not verify it. hahaha) before he joined the Catering services company that provided our meals at the residences. His mains were mostly so so, but his cakes and desserts is 95% good! One of the cakes we particularly like was the Black Forest cake that he made. The amount of cherries or berries that he had in the cake sure was generous! (compared to the one in the photo. lol)

Megabites @ NUS Science Canteen

This was today's lunch. We saw a mini poster outside Megabites about some promo set meals. Soup, Fries, Butter Rice, Chicken pieces with a choice of 3 sauces @ $3.90

Sounds like not bad a deal, so colleagues and I went straight in.
This is my lunch for today.

My lunch

Two other colleagues ate the same thing. All three of us had the different sauces that goes with it.

Colleague's lunch

The soup.

The mushroom soup

I had the sweet and sour sauce. (Honey something).
The other two were Teriyaki and Thai Chilli.

Guess what sauce?

It's so so food, but it was filling and affordable.

Something we noticed though. "Old Cat" was telling us that while he was queue for his food, he noticed that there's this person in front of him that was being very difficult, wanted to change the vegetables, soup changed and this and that.

But he noticed that the person serving still had a happy face and was just did what the customer wanted. We shall see if they are like this the next time we visit. I think they score points here!

Sheng Yi Fa Lor Mee @ 431 Clementi Ave 3

One of our colleague had an urge for a gooey starchy lunch. To satisfy his craving, he suggested we have Lor Mee. So off we went on a short bus ride along the AYE to Clementi. Blk 431 Clementi Ave 3 is along the AYE. ;-)

Today's wait for the Lor Mee's quite long. There was 2 or 3 long tables of people all waiting to eat Lor Mee! Is it eat Lor Mee day today?

So around maybe 15 bowls later, it was our turn. We were looking at the lady carrying the bowls and wondering if it will come to our table! LOL.

I love that liquidy garlic thingy! Makes my mouth stink though after the meal.
For those who loves vinegar, pour as much as you want. I always like the fried stuff they have for this dish, not forgetting the braised pork pieces inside.

Lor Mee

As usual I have my Kuey Teow.

Lor Mee

The person who had the urge had the yellow noodle with bee hoon combi.

Prince Taiwan Porridge @ Upper Bukit Timah

I think I posted this porridge place not too long ago. I went back there again all because a few of us wanted to eat porridge. This is the dinner that we had before we went for supper at OldTown in yesterday's post.

Creature of habits maybe? We order almost the same thing.
The taman fish that's fried till very crispy with dark sauce. Ugly but delicious food. LOL

Taman Fish

The chicken in wine sauce, that's almost becoming standard.

Chicken in Wine sauce

My favourite vegetable to go with porridge. Heard some people said Sze Chuan Cai is not good for health, but we still ate it anyway.

Sze Chuan Cai with pork strips

The Mei Cai Kou Rou. Today's version seems nicer. Maybe the cook's in a really good mood today eh?

Mei Cai Kou Rou

Cai Poh Eggs, another favourite with many people.

Chai Poh Egg

Aubergine with mince pork. Comfort food too.

Old Town White Coffee @ Chun Tin Court

Was with a few friends having 'supper' at OldTown at Upper Bukit Timah area. We had dinner earlier and at 8:45 pm, quickly drove back to my place so that the TV addicts in the group can catch the Little Nyonya on Channel 8. (We watch this show because of the food, really! LOL)

Then at 10pm when the show ended, we went to OldTown to have coffee and chit chat.
Pardon the dark pixelated photos. We were seated at a 'cosy' corner. hehe...

The ice 'Xi Mut' / 'stockings' tea.

The Nanyang Memorably coffee. (yeah, funny name right?)

The kaya and butter toast that we had.

We saw ice cream toast and could not resist.
It's a nice combi.

We were about to leave when we got a call from Doc Cheng. (He asks where were we and he is coming.) So, we thought we better order more things or else we would be occupying an empty table. So we ordered two "Ice Fire Polo Bun".

It's the name that aroused our curiosity. We wonder huh? "Si Mi Lai" eh?
This is it! Hot warm bun with...

Cold butter melting inside..

I find it ok, but momo says not nice.
So, when Doc Cheng arrived, he asked what's there to eat, we told him, try the polo bun. He ordered the tea with another toast..

We noticed that the Doc (who comes from HK), flattens the polo bun with the fork. When asked, why, he says, that's how it's eaten in HK. Ohh......

He says good polo bun have the top layer that comes out easily, so you got to press and flatten the bun so that it stays. When we ask him how this one taste, he says, quite ok. But the closer version is the one from Crystal Jade.

Wakashachiya @ The Central

Not sure if anyone also watch the Japanese documentary / comedy on Okto last night. Sis happened to channel surf and stop at this show called "Udon". It was a really funny show. Bro, Sis and I were laughing our heads off. We were also so tempted to have udon!

So for tonight's dinner, Momo, Bro and Sis went to The Central to have Udon!

The shop that caught our eye was Wakashachiya with the big words "Japanese Curry Udon" on their signboard. We wanted to have the Udon prepared like how it was shown on TV last night, with only udon, soy sauce and finely chopped spring onions. Guess we can't find that here.

So, we ordered 4 different curry udons so satisfy our Udon craving.
Momo had the Salmon Curry Udon.

Sis had the Fried Chicken Cutlet Udon.

Bro had the pork katsu curry udon.

I had the Karaage Curry Udon.

I must show a photo of Udon right? The ones above are all covered with curry. :-)

The curry's nice. The 4 of us found that the curry is not too thick, it was just nice for us to slurp it loudly. (We were doing what we watched on TV last night. LOL) It's not too sweet a curry too and all 4 of us had to keep blowing our noses while eating because it was spicy enough.

The 'namecard' at the payment counter states that they have been serving curry udon for over 20 years and they have 63 branches in Japan too. Maybe gotta some in Japan next time.

Cafe on the Ridge @ NUSS Kent Ridge Guild House

This was dinner two nights ago at Cafe on the Ridge. Sis was around NUS and I was there too, so we decided to have dinner at Cafe on the Ridge.

Sis had the Laksa with a big "you tiao" in it. It has a very thick gravy and sis seems to enjoy it. I had a sip of the gravy, it's quite ok. ;-)

I had the Nasi Goreng Kampung which I posted just last month. Just click on the link to see the photos taken then.

I did not take photo that night because I was sitting at the 'darker side' of the table. They use fancy spot lights and only part of the table is bright. LOL

MOF Japanese Sweets & Coffee @ West Coast Plaza

After our Japanese lunch (posted yesterday), we wanted to have some desserts. We went over to MOF Japanese Sweets & Coffee Café.

Here are some of the desserts we had. Doesn't this look gorgeous?
Ice cream and Japanese rice cakes.

This is the Macha Imo. I think 3 persons had this. (Why? because I told them it's nice. LOL)

They come with little piece of paper explaining what it is. I think my colleagues loved it. :-)

Another colleagues and I had this. It's some really really sticky baked rice cakes with crispy outer skin and soft filling inside. It also has really nice and cold red bean paste beside it, and soy powder sprinkled.

Closer view, so you know what I mean. I think it's not too bad.
But it really gives you a good jaw exercise!

I think this little slip that came is wrong? I don't see any gelato above. LOL
Maybe teething problems? They are not familiar with their desserts yet.
I think the dish above should be Abekawa.

Sushi Tei @ West Coast Plaza

Three colleagues have gone to recce (or reconnaissance) the newly refurbished and renamed "West Coast Plaza". They saw a few restaurants opened for business and told us, we found a new place to eat. We will go next week.

So the next week arrived. (ie few days ago) I got an early morning SMS to remind me to bring my Sushi Tei card. A colleague had $40 worth of vouchers and with the Sushi Tei card we can get another 10% off.

Ah. West Coast Plaza looks different. But there's still hint of the old Ginza Plaza all around. If your memory's good, you can remember which shops were in which lots too. :-)

The manager at Sushi Tei looks familiar. I think he is from the Holland Village branch. I recognise him. (because he gives excellent service before at HV)

I think he must be having a tough time trying to teach all the new hands in this branch though. Service is having some teething problems, but I guess it will go away after a while.

Now to continue, here's what we ate:

One colleague had the salmon sashimi rice.

Then our order of the fried salmon skin came. We had to return this because it was cold. Really cold. Too long on the counter? Anyway, we told them, they took it back and did something to it and it came back much better.

I had the char siu ramen. Spicy Miso version. So so lah...

Ms Preggy's who is no longer Preggy is now eating all her raw food. LOL
She had the this! Count the number of raw stuff in it. :-)

Old Cat and Dpuk had the crab fried rice, with no crabs in sight. LOL
But the orangy egg brightened it up a bit.

Pirate and almondjelly had the crab fried rice too, but theirs is with real crab. :-)

We had a plate of salmon belly to share and that was about it.
We still think Holland Village and Ngee Ann City branches have better chefs. The food from HV's / NAC's kitchen somehow tastes better. :-)

We will go back again in maybe 3 month's time and see how they fare. It's opened less than a month, so we expect teething problems.

(For those working in Science Park and NUS, there's a free shuttle service to West Coast Plaza)

Dinner @ Aunt's Kitchen

Every other weekend or so, the whole extended family will meet at Aunt's place for dinner. Aunt and her sis will whip up some dishes for the rest of us to enjoy. I have not taken food photos at her kitchen for some time, and this is last weekend's dinner. :-)

The pork leg and sea cucumber dish. It was served in two bowls. One bowl with all the lean meat.

The other bowl with the 'fattier meat'. LOL.
Everyone in the family got own preference.

With a bottle of her homemade sambal sauce ready, cooking the sotong dish is easy. Just have to control the fire and dish it up before everything turns rubbery. Yummm...

This soup is very tasty. Aunt boiled it for a few hours and we all loved the soup. Chicken feet, corn, carrots, ginger and some pork. 80% of the people eating dinner loves chicken feet. :-) Especially the ones that melts in your mouth when you put them in.

You can try this at home. Chicken feet at the market sells for around $4 a kilo only at the wet market.

The steamed fish.

The veg photos are missing again. I must have forgotten to take it again. LOL..
Enjoy your week.

Ikea Dining @ Ikea Alexandra

It's furniture shopping days these few weeks. Our family moved to a new place recently and we have been very busing packing and unpacking.

Two days ago, we ordered some furniture from the Scanteak warehouse sale in the morning. In the afternoon, we continued our furniture shopping at Ikea. At Ikea we were surprised that the "Kitchen showroom" came alive. Ikea ladies were baking! The whole place had a wonderful aroma because they were making/baking Swedish Gingersnap, Swedish Cinnamon Buns and Swedish Soffron Bun. We tried some and they were delicious too.

After spending a few hours looking at measurement, deciding on colour, we decided to break for dinner at the Ikea Restaurant. What did we have?

Brother and I had the Christmas Hot Plate Set that was on special at $10. (Usually $15 plus). The hot plate consists of 3 slices of Ham, a carving of Turkey, some carrots and potatoes and a bun. The turkey's looks a bit dry outside, but it was juicy inside though.

The set also comes with soup and (another) bun.

It also comes with a little Christmas log cake and tea/coffee. The cake's very moussey and chocolatey. (If there's such a word. haha)

Momo and sis had the Ikea Local meals instead. Local meal set was Nasi Briyani for Saturday.
(Oh, the chicken wing you see is additional)
